110º Heat Wave 🥵 in Bend, Oregon - When Full-time Travel Gets Impossible

  • We left the rain behind on the Washington coast. Chasing better weather, we landed in Bend, OR on a cool 70º day. We caught a few days of beautiful weather, but then a record-breaking heat wave descended upon us, forcing us to make new plans.
Living off-grid in our Airstream, we are at the mercy of the weather. Unfortunately, the heat wave meant that we couldn’t spend several weeks in Bend like we hoped. BUT, we still managed to pack in a ton of adventure. There is so much to do in Bend!
We took our stand up paddle boards down the Deschutes River, floating our way through the Old Mill River District. We also managed to paddle Sparks Lake on the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. (Thanks to one of our subscribers for the recommendation!)
Camped in the middle of some of the best mountain bike trails in the west, we also got out for several rides before the heat made riding unbearable. We rode a number of popular trails, including Phil’s Trail, COD, Ticket to Ride, and many more! Bend is a must-visit for any mountain biker.
We also made it to Newberry National Volcanic Monument, and hiked down into a MASSIVE lava tube. Aside from providing relief from the heat, this hike was one of the most unique things we’ve ever done.
Our most important family member, Lola, has been dealing with a heart condition, so we weren’t able to do much hiking. That just meant that we spent more time hanging out at Bend’s many river parks, enjoying our books and some local beer.
Because Lola needed to be in Bend for a follow-up vet appointment, we were forced to ride out the 100º+ heat wave. The only way to do this was with a hook up site at an RV park. However, our stay at the Bend/Sisters RV Garden Resort turned out to be more fun than expected!

Some things that we love as full-time travelers:
💧 Berkey Water Filter. Our water tastes great, and we know that it’s SAFE. Our Berkey filters out any hazardous chemicals from questionable water sources, and means our drinking water isn’t sitting in our Airstream’s 6 year old plastic holding tank! bit.ly/3hRXNoe

Camped last month in that same spot! Bend is amazing and to cool off go up to Mt Bachelor. Another awesome town is Bellingham, WA and no smoke! Enjoy!!

Nice! One of our all-time favorite dispersed sites. We were hoping to make it up to Bellingham earlier this summer, but the rain wasn’t cooperating!

Ah, I’m glad to see your video. Yup, upper elevations are the best for cooler climates. Give the best days for your poochie, he’ll love that, being with his family. 💕✨

Hey Guys, I’m from Bend, OR and was randomly surfing UTube tonight, July 29 and saw one of your videos. Looks like you were already in Bend and I missed you. I too, work from my RV, and have lived in the Pacific NW 40 + years. Hit me up if ya need tips. ( looks like you are from FL?)

Hey Stacey, glad you found us! We did indeed miss you in Bend (we’re in Colorado now) but we’ll be back for sure! And we’ll definitely take you up on some local knowledge next time we’re out that way. We found that dispersed camping in the PNW is a little less widespread than what we’re used to in the Four Corners. Some planning (we’re bad at that) and local knowledge is key!

Love you videos...we have the same airstream...love all your mods. Where did you get the funnel that you use to pour water into the water tank outside???

Thanks for watching, Robert! The funnel was an Amazon score. The only funnel I could find with the right angle. I used a pipe saw to make a cut just before the second bend amzn.to/3cpLttk

How do you keep your dog safe from the heat when you go places she isn’t allowed? Thanks!

When we're traveling with Lola, we either do things early in the morning or just don't do anything that she can't. To add to the challenge, she has separation anxiety if she is left in the trailer, so even if temperatures would be fine with the fans running, we have to bring her with us. Not all dogs are this needy though :)
