    Hey! the battery message, means that you can use the old battery in the Hero 8, but some features won't accept it, like the 240 fps + hypersmooth, and 4k 60 fps hypersmooth...the rest is fine :) that's because the hero 8 battery has the same size, same power but different technology that gives more power with the same mAh. As someone evaluating GoPro Hero 8 it has been interesting viewing the various video/stories about these issues
    1) 'legs' - some H8's have no movement whilst others do - sounds like a production issue. Some reviewers love the legs as it removes use of cage
    2) battery message - GP could have explained it clearer, in fact, it is still not clear exactly what it means. Rumour is Boost is impacted but no one has proved this yet. Some reviewers say they have noticed no impact even incl Boost.
    3) non-replaceable lens is a weakness most agree especially if doing real action stuff
    There also seems to be microSD card issues (linked incorrectly to battery % low?) and firmware updates that kills the H8 instead of fixing it (hassle to update from scratch)
    Comparison tests of GPH7 v GPH8 v OsmoAction doing same tasks with similar best settings end up using the similar (+/-2%) battery power over the test

    I just can't believe how some people don't understand basic things like maybe your foldable mount has a defect and even if it does it won't be a problem because the hero 8 is known for its hyper smooth 2.0 stabilization?!(I don't know anyone who actually likes the frame you had to put on the hero 7 for it to mount this is a huge upgrade) When he shows that a notification pops up when he puts the older battery saying the go pro isn't able to perform at peak performance it's very simple to understand:Older Battery=not peak performance,Updated Battery=peak performance, and if he really doesn't like how the notification pops up he can just select for it not to show up again. Even though it is true that the lens aren't removable they're 2x stronger so that shouldn't be a problem for most situations. I have a hero 8 and I guarantee that it won't let you down, in my opinion it's the best action camera that has come out so far:)

    As I understood, the hero8 has no changable lenscover for two reasons:
    1. GoPro 8 is waterproof until 5m so a changeable lens could be a point where water could enter the camera
    2. they compensated it by using thicker and more solid glass in the 8 - so it is not as fragile as the glass from the previous models.

    For Problem Number One: You haven’t tightened the thumb screw properly. Mine has no give.
    For problem number Two: Tye new battery has a slightly different wattage or voltage so hyper smooth 2.0 works better.
    Problem Three: Its there to secure dust and water out of the GoPro better. Otherwise you get dust on the lens and that ruins it. Just use a screen protecter or case to prevent damage.
    Don’t know what there is to complain about...

  • @SummitMTB
    @SummitMTB Рік тому +1

    If anyone's wondering about the battery, the hero 8 battery has a higher discharge rate so as to support the hypersmooth calculations. The other batteries have a lower discharge rate so don't power hypersmooth as well. That's why the message is there. If you're worried about pop-up mount bits getting wobbly, you can just buy a skeleton cage for the GoPro so you don't have to take the camera out all the time, cuz you can access all the buttons through it.

  • @KyleDeVilliers
    @KyleDeVilliers 4 роки тому +4

    Get the roll cage or the tempered glass protector to help the lens stay protected. They wont degrade the image.
    Also, gopro 8 batteries have a higher discharge rate than the previous ones. This is to provide the camera with enough power for the high frame/bit rates. Old batteries do work but not in all modes

      @willpuckett8217 4 роки тому +4

      exactly. even with very extreme shaking, it is very stable. the little give would not be noticeable. He also did not tighten screws or he had a faulty camera.

    • @yafilmDOTcom
      @yafilmDOTcom 4 роки тому +1

      @@willpuckett8217 Yeah, but why introduce extra gives on top of the "main give" of the recording event is already introducing? Even if the resulting video looks very stable, I would say that if you get rid of that extra shaking that you would have an exceptionally very stable video because with that extra give I am sure there have to be some degradation of the image quality at least in a very minimal level - there is so much software and the algorithm can do to fix things, but if you are going to have extreme shaking from side to side in super rapid session there would come to a point where it could look noticeable.
      This, of course, ignoring that the OP might not have tightened his screws tight enough and that the give probably would not be there with a properly tightened screw - assuming that his unit isn't faulty like others have suggested in the comments.
      Personally, what would I do if I had this camera AND indeed I couldn't help to get rid of the give despite how tight I made the screw? I would simply put two fat layers of tape on each side or two fat rubbers, enough to block out the give.

  • @GettingNegative
    @GettingNegative 4 роки тому +1

    I think your issues are negligible at best. 1) The feet, they move a little more, but the hypersmooth 2.0 takes care of any shake, and if you really need to, they made the 8 the same size so you can mount it in your 7 case and get the same sturdiness. BUT, with the feet built in you can't forget the case and be without a way to mount your gopro. 2) The battery notice is because they upgraded the battery and can't guarantee older batteries function the same at 4k high bit rates at 6o fps, 1080 at 240 fps, ect, so they made the warning to be transparent which is admirable. 3) I shoot film photography, and have friends who are respected DPs in the film industry, we all use filters of different kinds. Besides, comparing an action sport camera to a RED or something like that, isn't a fair comparison at all. If you're really looking to get the most out of your gopro, you're going to need at least some ND filters on sunny days where the gopro performs best, which will protect your lens. All that being said, I don't assume you're actually that upset with the camera, I know I'm not. Hope your day is going great, cheers.

    The wiggling/crooked mounting issue is REAL. No matter how tight you make it. Ive bought and had to return 3 different Hero8's and even tried a Hero9 and they all wiggle and can easily mount several degrees crooked using the crappy folding fingers, making your footage you take useless without knowing until you look back at it. Ive talked to Go pro several times about the issue and they just try to send me replacement fingers which doesn't fix the design flaw. I wanted to upgrade to the 8 for the stabilization i need. They should come out with a fixed finger mount that you can swap out so that it doesn't wiggle and mount crooked. This was a big mistake, and Im surprised I haven't heard more about it. I cant just be getting a bunch of bad ones. Even the $650 CAD GoPro MAX uses these flimsy folding fingers. And using the protective housing isn't a real option: way too bulky, lowers audio quality, and you have to take it in and out to charge or plug in.

    Late to the party, but main difference between 7 and 8 were the batteries, other are mainly software tweaks that are possible by new batteries giving more juice to the camera cpu to process things like hypersmooth boost, hypersmooth at all frame rates, etc. Thats why camera notifies you you are not going to get all the features when using last gen. battery pack, as they just dont give enough Amps.

    Sorry to hear about the movement and give in your folding mount arms - mine are rock solid and don't move like that at all, they couldn't be tighter. I totally understand why you'd be less than pleased with that. Oh, and GoPro wants you to use the new batteries, I have no problem with that whatsoever, they say they are improved over the older ones and I believe them. Aaaand I just got some screen and lens protectors that seem super-clear ... well they ARE super clear you can't even tell any difference besides the lens not scratching if you drop it. So in those regards I'm not finding any issues so far with the Hero8, I'm not trying to change any minds but rather just speaking out as someone not experiencing these same problems.

    Two of the three issues are easily solvable...
    BATTERY: just buy a Hero 8 battery. They're still $20 each. And you can still use the old batteries--you'll just have to put up with the message when you turn it on, and some features may not be available.
    THE COVER: Buy the one with the silicon cover that comes with the plastic lens cover (I think it's called the Roll cage). I believe this is $25 and offers decent protection for the lens.
    (FYI, the feet are not flimsy. IF they are, then either you didn't tighten the screw to the mount, or you have a defective GoPro.)

    I did have some major issues with Hero 8 today - 1) it crased, 2) it froze, 3) it would not turn on, 4) some videos had no sound, 5) it would not turn off after freezing had to remove battery.

    problem 1 and 3 can both be fixed by putting your gopro 8 in a protective housing. housing gets scratched, just replace it. also the reason the warning for the battery comes up is because the new batteries have higher charge capacity and can run the camera at higher frame rates for longer than if you have an older battery in it. doesnt mean the gopro will perform less, just means the battery wont last as long.

      Which could have been researched instead of being so negative about it. And even admitting he says he has no clue what it means.
      - the fingers are really stable on all models i tested before buying one. So i guess the one in the video is faulty.

    I do not have the give when mounting my hero8. Mine mounted quite solid. Try tightening the screws that hold the mounts to the camera.
    The new batteries have a higher discharge rate, which the camera needs with certain features that require more power, such as Hypersmooth Boost. Hence you get he warning with older batteries with lower discharge rates. Older batteries will therefore still work, but you won’t have access to some newer features.

    The whole Hero 8 is a step in the wrong direction, not just those flimsy "fingers" to mount the camera. The side door is a so dumb idea that it's hard to believe GoPro could do such a stupid thing. Try plugging a USB power source leaving the battery bay and SD card slot exposed and check for dust a ambient moisture contamintation. Will see how long your camera lasts. Besides that the unremovable lens cover is a serious drawback on an "action" camera. There a lot of videos on UA-cam from guys having problems with the camera freezing and the Hypersmooth boost with lots of image noise. This camera is an absolute failure. The cappy Hero 7 was better and GoPro never fixed its issues. Why would now on the same hardware with just a very expensive firmwae update? Enough of GoPro.

    They didn't get the battery compartment or door right at all dude. It doesn't open far enough, falls off with the slightest touch and easily lost. The battery is held in with nothing but friction if you use the usb port and the whole side of the camera is opened exposing all the internal electronics if you do... plus they removed the hdmi port. Too many trade-offs have been made in order to do away with the frame (which was also added protection). They also increased the overall size of the camera, but cheaped out and kept the same size touchscreen, battery and sensor. Essentially, gp have repurposed what was the best action cameras on the market to appeal to vloggers. Now, it's not good for either.

    The battery popup thing is because the older batteries don't have as much capacity as the newer hero8 battery. The "peak performance" is affected because the hypersmooth 2.0 consumes a lot of battery power, and in order to use such hypersmooth, you need that extra capacity.
