Remember deathcore? That stuff got popular in 2005, 19 years ago, now I'm stuck with large holes in my ears and everyone assumes I'm a homosexual, which I am, but still you know.

I wasn't aware it started that early

@@CitizenSnipsI'd say the first 'golden age of deathcore' was 2005-2010 and was more hardcore adjacent and the second golden age started around 2020 and is more death metal adjacent but also with more melodic and blackened bands (Lorna Shore, Shadow Of Intent, Signs of the Swarms, etc.).
      The 2005-2010 era:
Next to the big bands (Suicide Silence, Despised Icon, Whitechapel, Carnifex, All Shall Perish, JFAC, Chelsea Grin, As Blood Runs Black) you had some really heavy over the top, kinda goofy bands with lots of skits, and erm...yeah the lyrics of that time weren't too great aka a shitton of misogyny (e.g. Whore to a Chainsaw by Thy Art Is Murder or Whitechapel - Prostatic Fluid Asphyxiation). Here are some of my favorite lesser known bands and EP/albums of that time:
      Albums/EP's:
      Abacabb - Survivalist (2009)
A Black Rose Burial - An Awakening of Reventants (2005)
Animosity - Shut It Down (2003) Empires (2005) Animal (2007)

@MalevolentReflux Huh, never heard of deathcore until about 2008

@@CitizenSnipsI think 2008-2009 was when it blew up, it was pretty insane, you went to Despised Icon in a sold out venue holding a 1000 people and 500 of them didn't even really listen to metal, I was a weird but great time. Metalcore/deathcore was kinda mainstream even. I remember going to 'Lowlands' a festival with all kinds of music and there were 10k people headbanging to Rose Of Sharyn by Killswitch Engage and 1 hour later they were bouncing to Snoop Dogg and N.E.R.D.

Ashes of the Wake came out when I was a teenager, and Lamb of God were a 'modern' band that I listened to throughout my teens. The realisation that it came out closer to albums such as Master of Puppets or Reign in Blood than to today is absolutely mind-boggling.

  • @JohnWCH

One time, I saw Lamb of God in NJ. I watched the show in the pit with Max Weinberg and he was telling me how his kid was a metal fan and he takes him to shows. That fucking kid grew up, became the drummer for Slipknot, got fired and I'm still telling that dumb story like it happened yesterday. It was like 20 years ago.

Literally my first thought when I saw the thumbnail, before even clicking the video, was, "Yeah, 'Modern' if 'I listened to this when I was in middle school' counts as modern".
Also, again, despite being over 20 years old, I think Opeth's Blackwater Park would be my answer. Not a song, but that album has gone on to create an entire sub-genre of prog that I basically live in. I would not be surprised if people were still talking about it in 50 years.

That’s how it is when you get to a certain age. As far as I’m concerned, bands like Korn and Deftones are all still newfangled.

yeah I def felt that I was in my early 20s when that came out, 42 now lol. My first metal concert was when Pantera was on the Great Southern Trendkill tour. I saw them with Anthrax and Coal Chamber in Virginia. I remember when Hatebreed was like the new thing around my parts, Satisfaction is the Death of Desire. And when we were kids we would have to hide listening to bands like Metallica and Slayer. We changed the lyrics to Enter Sandman to "Exit Night enter Light lmao" we would sing that part loud so it muffled out the real lyrics to be able to keep listening to it. And when I bought the Black Cassette tape my stepmom was like "Are there any curse words in this music? and the teenage clerks were like no, its fine nothing bad at all!. I had to run back and thank them because back in the day Hell and Shit were considered evil curse words LMAO

Ride the Lightning was 20 years old when Ashes of the Wake was released, and we’re now 20 years from Ashes of the Wake.
The maths make me go cross-eyed.
