- Demonstration of the Rickenbacker Ric-O-Sound wiring setup using two bass amps and 4003 Ric-O-Sound output jack. Bridge pickup goes to the treble output of the Ric O Sound box (SWR amp), neck pickup goes to the bass output of the Ric O Sound box (Carvin amp).
Excellent demo. Thank you. In 1976 I bought a 4001 stereo Rick, had no idea how to use it, and regret to this day that I traded it away...
Tony thanks for watching. Get yourself another Rickenbacker, you deserve it!
finally someone who understands what Rick-O-Sound really is! thank you!
Thanks for watching and thanks for the compliment!
"Understands"? I think everyone understands Ric-O-Sound. It is NOT an innovation but way more a COMPENSATION for Ric's abysmally low output pickups. I got more bad news: the dual truss rod is also NOT an innovation either. It is actually a failed attempt at compensating for the atrocious unstable necks on Rics. Am I a Ric hater? You bet. Sorry I wound up in this thread. I'll leave now....cheers.
@@craigdamage I think Rick-O-Sound goes further in the effort to define the possibilities & I appreciate that -BTW, better 2 rods than the speed bump in my EB-2D...
@@PsyJaye make no mistake, Rics look cool and they sound great but are plagued with multiple design flaws coupled with their insulting asking price. If you are willing to shell out absurd money for a Ric I would suggest a 4004 Laredo or Cheyenne.
@@craigdamage I believe you speak from experience & I have only had the one short scale Rick as a reference so I may have been fortunate - I have heard similar complaints from loyal Rickenbacker owners - thank you for your suggestions - but in fairness to buy anything American means to shell out absurd $$$ - how is an average young player going to afford a Fender Elite Jazz Bass anymore? making China & Mexico wealthier - & Robo-tuners? they're running us away ~ J ~
Thank you for that demo ~ I had a rare short scale Rick and never heard it in stereo - Jaye
Jaye, thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it.
It's amazing the improvement in the sound purity that -- even without any effects -- one gets by using this resource!!
I agree, it adds so much range to what the Rickenbacker 4003 can do. Whenever I have the opportunity (and the room on stage) I lug two amps and use it. Thanks for watching!
I have a fantastic 4001/1974, thant I've bought brand nee that time. Since the very begginig I start using the amazing Rick'o 'Sound, with an stereo audio amp, having different loudspeakers for each channel ( for the bass channel, having 2 x 15" loudspeakers, and 2x 10" ones, for the treble channel). Two fabulous advantages of using the stereo resource giving by Rick'o'Sound: It eliminates the cross modulation from the lower frequencies onto the higher frequencies (as the treble and bass sounds are given by separate loudspeakers): Secondly, you can add effects on a given channel (generally, the treble one) , such as phase shifter, distortion, wah-wah... you name it, but keepin the 'punch' of the bass unchanged!! I still have/used a lot!! ... even being 64! ;-)
Agreed, the separation of pickups makes for great clarity of the treble and bass tones. Rock on!
I just aquired a 1981 4001. After a little bit of love, she is going to be a great player!
Congrats on acquiring a great bass and thanks for watching!
Hey, with a bit of love I reckon I could make sweet music, too...😁
Right on man I've owned my 4003 since 1984 this is the first time Ever seeing the rick-o-sound box thanks for the demo now I know what I need to buy
Darryl6636 thanks bro. I understand the Ric-O-Sound box is hard to find but I got mine ages ago from Pick Of The Ricks, try them. Keep rocking! I still use this setup in my current gigging rig. Not seen here, but I have since added a pedal board and I use it to the treble amp.
@@bass117 ... Pick of the Ricks is in Southern NJ? Friend of mine gets all his Rickenbackers from him.
@@331StrokedGT yes that's right. I had the good luck to come across them at a guitar show years ago out here on Long Island. Thanks for watching, keep rocking!
Sounds incredible. this gives such a great definition. And when you are playing the bass this gives an awesome way to controll the bass within unfamiliar acoustic invironments.
Frans van den Berge Thanks for watching and thanks for the compliment. yes I agree it adds a great extra range of sound.
Excellent! I replaced the mono jack in my 4001V63 with a stereo jack and never looked back!
Conley Flake Does the stereo jack split the pickup output like the Ric-O-Sound cable, or send the same two pickups to two amps?
It splits the output like the "Rick-o-sound," yes. Each pickup goes to a separate amp. That is what the "Rick-o-sound" jack is; a stereo jack.
Thank you for the demonstration I have a 1980 4001 Rickenbacker and have really turned it into a Frankenstein, I have recently spent time on their website and will order all the electronic package it came with , more to follow
Dude! This is amazing! Can't believe i'm just seeing this. Thanks for a cool tutorial on the Rick-O-Sound.
I've never used the Rick O sound at all...Thanks for posting...
Ferox965 it does give you more tonal possibilities. Certainly not for everyone, but I enjoyed using it at several gigs. Regrettably my SWR crapped out on me so I haven't used it in a while.
Nice demo Kevin!!! Awesome.
Thanks Ed!
Thanks for the demo. Very useful.
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Best sustain I've heard in a long time 👍
Ahh thats great and its so much clearer now! so i basically just need a stereo lead plugged only into the rick-0-sound output splitting off into 2 amps. My 4003 didnt come with any documentation so i was really confused! Thank you!
Very cool. Thank you Kevin. Rock on!
Thanks Denny!
Excellent demo. Thankyou sir!
Thanks for watching! I am still using my Ric-o- Sound setup to this day except now I sometimes replace the SWR amp with my Hartke TX600 head and Hartke HD112 cab. Rock on!
Congrats on keeping the bass in pristine condition, hyper clean and shiny (well, looks like it is so)
Ricardo Bonoldi Fortuna thanks, it has several minor dings from the two decades I have been gigging with it but it is in general great shape.
Nice Ric. I’m hoping to get one myself soon.
The best demonstration of a Rickenbacker's stereo capability I've seen, thanks. I don't know why they stopped making the box. I guess a stereo Y cable with extensions on the Y would work.
Hi Bob, the Y cable would not split the signal from each pickup. Try Pick Of The Ricks or ebay, might find one there.
@@bass117 Thanks Ken. I don't know why they make using the stereo capability so difficult on their basses wired for stereo.
You can use a Y, Kevin is talking about a mono Y instrument cable which allows people on any bass to create a “stereo sound” (two amps not split pickups), whereas you’re looking for a stereo Y, TRS, to two mono cables. Sweetwater carries them in 5 or 10 feet “Pro Co EDCBQ2L-5 TRS - (2) TSMA Insert Cable”
great, I have a bass like yours, not really tried the stereo - but I also have the lead ricky stereo guitar and have used it to with two amps and pedal chains to great effect. You didn't mention how the tone is modified on the guitar with the Volumes in this mode, the whole point is using two pickups to find those tones, sounds great on your demo here.
Sounds great, I should probably try this with mine some day haha
Billy Sheehan does this exact same thing with his Yamaha except his output jacks are both separate, one for each pickup. He has all Low end, that anyone would ever need going to one amp and the most treble you'd ever get going to another amp. Check the Premier Guitar Rig Rundown of Mr. Big for an exact explanation. He also did a video while at some camp where he explained it as if talking to experienced musicians
Wesley I will check that out, I am a Sheehan fan.
beautiful rick
Thanks, it's my main gig bass of my collection.
Really nice video! I wasted time w/ my Rickenbacker back in '85 by not utilizing its stereo input and adjustable mute. Thanks for the info on the 'box'.
Thanks for watching! Yeah I stumbled across the Ric-O-Sound box at a guitar show, and was pleasantly surprised at the range of sound when I eventually had two amps at my disposal.
Great video man!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Awesome explanation!!
Thanks for watching!
I did that back in 72 my 4001 stereo the neck pickup through a Dual Showman with 2x15 JBL's and the Bridges Pickup through
a 100 Watt Bass Marshall Plexi with creamback bass celestions.
Thank you for this. How do you feel about replacing the bridge with a Hipshot and with Semour Duncan pickups?
I have mulled over upgrading to a Hip-hop bridge based on many positive reviews I have read but would rather keep it (mostly) stock at this point. I did add an after market thumb rest (no additional drilling) but otherwise it's original. Never considered changing pickups as I have an Alembic Persuader I also gig with for any other sound accentuations (wow that's a mouthful!). I also drag along two pedalboards.
I have a Sunn Beta Bass 2 channel bass amp from the early 80's that I get some nice tone from. Even though I am still outputting through 1x15" speaker, I can dial in each pickup individually. I put some extra gain on the neck pickup for some growl/distortion and can tailor the highs on the bridge pickup to my liking to bring out the clang.
That's great, and minimizes the load-in / load-out - and backache heh heh. Thanks for watching!
I bought that same head with the 2X15” bottom but instead of getting my dream tone inwas batteling Marshall half stacks to be heard, fast forward in my life I’m back playing and have ordered a Hartke 4X8 500 watt combo and feel I’ll get the sound that’s been rolling around my head all these years lol my
Great demo. But do you always keep your pickup cover on? Doesn't it limit your playing position?
Thanks for watching. I have never had a problem due to the pickup cover. I play above it and below it with no issues. Might be in the way for some players based on their comfort position but I am not having any problems. Rock on!
Great video man. I have that same Carvin practice amp too.,
Thanks for watching! Yeah the Carvin has held up through a lot of gigs!
I just bought my 2018 4003 but I don’t have 2 amps to try the Rick-O-Sound. I do have a stereo cable from Ebay just for the stereo Ricks for when I do get another amp. My Rickenbacker 12 string (360/C63) also has Rick-O-Sound. Can’t wait for the experimentation.
Thanks for watching! I have been playing since the 60's and have collected a few amps so thanks to my understanding wife I can store multiple amps in the garage. Depending on the venue I use different amp combos. Large venue i use my Acoustic 150B for the bass signal and a Hartke TX600 amp through a Hartke HD112 cab for the Treble.
Have you tried separating the amps so that you can hear the stereo effect?
It's more a tonal difference rather than a stereo effect, but yeah that would add to the power of the bass output.
I have a Fire Glow 4001C64 that has no Ric-O Sound. Just mono output. I still love it
dbrowdie Yeah the Ric-O-Sound is not in every Rickenbacker instrument, but it sure adds a nice new range of sound!
Nothing growls like a Ric.
@@bflo1000 agreed, I always go back to it as my gig bass out of my 7-bass Collection (down from 14 heh heh)
Thats sick!
Thanks for watching. Yeah, most people aren't aware of this capability.
I would probably roll off the tone control on the neck and engage the bass cut capacitor on the bridge to get a little more separation. It's a cool sound!
Most excellent!
Thank you! I appreciate your comment. Thanks for watching. Rickenbacker makes outstanding instruments and they have features many musicians are not aware of. Rock on!
What I don't understand is: when you push your switch down, you are using the neck-pickup, but you say the sound is going to the SWR. Shouldn't the neck-p.u. go to the Carvin?
Rein de Vries, you are correct, I had it backwards in my description. Thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed it nonetheless!
I would travel back to the 70's to buy a rickenbacker for cheap...
Bowgart, you can find them for a good price on ebay now and then. Sometimes people give up the music and let them go for a song. Thanks for watching! Keep looking for your Rickenbacker, they are a sweet axe!
Do you ever separate both amps with some distance between? One at each side of a stage? I just bought a new Maple glow 4003 and would like some ideas for a stage setup.
Gutbucket I dont usually have the stage space to do more than put the two amps about a foot apart. Most times they are right next to each other. Personally I prefer them together as each amp produces a totally different tone, so I can mix and/or match as I like. Thanks for watching!
The box is not needed. Jist get a proper strereo Y cable/splitter.
I am in a small local cover band and about to try feeding the bridge pup to the PA and the neck to my amp. As it is, there is usually no room on stage for another amp. I will put any effects I use on the PA side and keep the lows out so as not to mess up vocals. I should be able to balance the two in real time. Fun.
Would a guitar amp be good for the treble? I'm looking for a 70s Geddy sound out of my Ric (just got one this week)
Geddy used a Sunn 2000S along w an SVT early on in rush. He plugged the bridge pup (which give more treble) into the Sunn.
I think Squire used a guitar amp at times for the treble side.
Marshal or Orange cabs would be sick!
Given the bridge horseshoe pickup before the hi-gains (the current pickups) were originally meant for guitars as it was, then yes a guitar amp will pretty much compliment the treble pickup.
I just got a July 98 Ric and the pickups are complete garbage. Did you replace yours or is your bass all stock?
Since Rickenbacker quit making these. What can I use in is place. And can you refer me where to buy it? Thank you in any help you can give me.
wonderful!!!
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
Where do get the Rick-o-sound box? I’ve looked everywhere for one. I thought I’d get when I bought my 2016 4003 new. But it didn’t come with one.
It works the same with a 1/4 inch y connecter and is a lot cheaper
You can make one, I did years ago for mine. The Ric O Sound jack has 2 channels, all you do is wire one Switchcraft mono jack on the box for the neck pickup channel and another as the bridge pickup channel coming from the stereo jack that your bass will plug into with a stereo cable. Pretty basic electronics. I use the Y connector now because I lost my box lol
@@mikelane2866 Thanks this is what I finally did. $6.00
Middle position using both amps is best. Geddy Lee used a Sunn 2000S for the bridge pup & an Ampeg SVT for the neck pup of his Ric in the earlier Rush days.
I did not know that!. Thanks for watching.
@@bass117 What a setup huh, LOL. Those big heavy vintage amps were great!
@@bflo1000 yeah the refrigerator amps are not for me anymore. Sold my Acoustic 360 a couple years back, and will be selling my Acoustic 150B soon as well!
@@bass117 I'm in the same situation. Those things are heavy as hell.
Yeah and the V4B cabinets for the SVT.
Enjoyed it
Thanks for watching!
Could I just use an AB box with a stereo cable and get the same thing?
An AB box will send signal from both pickups to both amps. No splitting of signal from each pickup. The Rick-o-sound box (plugged into the Rick-o-sound jack) sends signal from one pickup to one amp and other pickup to other amp.
i like the pic of the dog in the pool
John Yambo You have sharp eyes! That was our Golden Retreiver, Amber, gone several years now. She was a great dog.
Nice
This guy gets it.
Widow Speak, thanks for the compliment, and thanks for watching!
I have the exact same Ric.
Skelloween We are both lucky bassists!
How do you mute both channels on stage to tune?
Rock it Ole Man
which kind of strings did you use?
rotanal D'Addario nickel wound regular light gauge EXL170TP 45/65/80/100.
I'm using mine (if I ever get one) for some Lemmy and Billy Sheehan sounds.
The Ric-O-Sound feature is great for that! Thanks for watching.
+Kevin Holmgren Course! I love Rick basses!
For Billy Sheehan sounds you're better getting a Yamaha Attitude III. It is a bit more expensive than a Ric though.
Sullivan county. Im a bass player from bklyn. Now in beechlake Pa.
Keep on rocking the low end Tony! Thanks for watching.
Output both amps to 2 channels on your mixer and pan to the desired level you want to accenuate. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Sound like a Jersey Boy or New Yacker ! : )
Prog X Born and raised in the South Bronx.
There Ya go Kevin, I new it Cool !! Nice demo I enjoyed it, : )
the lack of a contour/anatomic body makes it uncomfortable to rest the forearm? and consequently, uncomfortable to play?
Alberto Alcolumbre the design is different from such instruments as G&L L-1000, Fender Precision and Wal Thumb which have the ergonomic design for resting the forearm on the instrument. However there are many right hand positions that do not involve resting the forearm on the bass. I have had many such basses- Gibson EB4, Hagstrom Swede, Epiphone El Capitan, and have played without discomfort. This 4003 as well as my El Dorado Rickenbacker do not cause forearm discomfort due to the way I play them.
Rickenbacker still puts the stereo input in their basses and guitars but no longer makes the Ric-O-Sound box. WTF ? There was an after market company that made a similar product but they also quit making them. I'd like to set my 4003 up for stereo but screwing around with "Y" cables and crap turns me off.
I acquired my Ric-O-Sound box ages ago at a guitar show here on Long Island, at a table set up by Pick of the Ricks. I would try them first and then try the Ebay option. Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much! There is no where to actually show how to use the damn thing!
Richard
Richard, thanks for watching. Glad you found my video useful! Rock on!
wow I always thought that both jacks on the bass would be used at the same time on Ric-o-Spund
sound
@@aggiejason4305 actually if you plug a standard cord into the ric-o-sound input, it will sound like crap. Each input is unique.
Me too
I can do pretty much the same with my Ashdown NM2 pedal one out to my Ampeg and the other to my Hartke.
You can do that to have your total signal go to two amps, but the Ric-O-Sound cable and Ric-O-Sound output jack on the bass spit the signal of each pickup to an individual amp.
How would you hook a wireless to that?
1rushboy I don't think wireless would be practical with this setup, unless you could find a stereo wireless output at the bass side and then two mono systems, one on each amp. Good question! Thanks for watching.
2:12 output :)
It's a boost pedal
so u don't need the rick o box to get the rick o sound?
debbie
gretschgirl Yes you need the Ric-O-Sound cable to properly make use of the Ric-O-Sound output on the bass.
You can also use the Mogami stereo cable.
I was under the impression that you could use a stereo adapter instead. Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe that just wouldn't produce the intended sound?
You could also build your own box. It's simple
@@bass117 What if you just used a Y cable into 2 different heads?
Play Red Barchetta.
Well I did play YYZ some years ago on a fretless! Thanks for watching.
Beefy, middy!
radcam69 can also go trebly under the right settings
or u can use an SVT :)
I have an Acoustic 150B that does the trick when extra air movement is needed! Thanks for watching.
I have one..Too lazy to use it
I just had my SWR Workingman's 10 amp repaired so i could use it again in this combination.
How Long before your wife made you either put it all away or out right sell
Well you know what I'm married over 45 years so we know how to compromise heh heh. She was out of the house at a craft show the day I made this video so everything went back to its rightful (hiding) place before she got home. But I tell you I had my Acoustic 150B standing in the TV room for many years with no objections from my Queen! Moved it because of renovations but that was my choice.
It’s too complicated man!!!
