When I was in my 20s, Suddenly Everything Has Changed had a different meaning. Now in my 40s, it feels a lot deeper and heavier. It makes the air leave my lungs. When he says “Putting all the clothes you washed away. And as your folding up a shirt you hesitate. And it goes fast. I think of the past. And Suddenly everything has changed.” This is a very real experience for me. You’re doing every day adult things that you’ve been doing for decades, and while you’re doing so your mind wanders to your teens and childhood. Carefree, happy times, maybe even sometimes sad and scary, but then all of a sudden your mind snaps back to the here and now and you’re doing this mundane task and you are instantly brought back to the now old you. It’s always such a surreal and sometimes depressing feeling. One day you’re a young, fun, carefree person, then suddenly everything has changed and you’re a stressed out, boring old person. Sorry for the novel-length comment 😅 Anyway, it makes me so happy to see the younger generations appreciating The Flaming Lips.
Absolutely is a more impactful song now that I’m in my 40s than it was when I bought the album in my 20s. The slow progress of the mundane and the crush of responsibilities numb you to the inexorable progress toward feeling yourself disintegrate.
I knew this would be right up your alley when I got the notif for it!! You've gotta check out the 20th anniversary live album of this that they played with a backup choir and symphony. The sounds are HUGE especially on tracks like The Spark That Bleed and Feeling Yourself Disintegrate which were already my two favorites.
Back in 1999 this album really came out of nowhere. Such a great album and definately one of my favorites of all time. This band is really stacked and you can hear it best on this album. Wayne Coyne is a fantastic song writer, Steven Drozd is a fucking musical genius (I don't use that lightly) and they let him run wild with this album and Michael Ivins is a great bassist and a talented producer and recording engineer as well. I think you would enjoy Embryonic as a follow-up. Darker tone but also pretty great.
I must've listened to this album 1000 times. Every time i do i appriciate it more. Fun fact Sleeping On The Roof was an experiment where the members of The Flaming Lips wrote random notes on a musical staff and thats where the melody came from. The orginal version which you can find online but it takes some digging (Known then as "Should We Keep The Severed Head Awake) was 30 minutes long. The overall tone of the album was influenced by Wayne Coyne the lead songwriters dad passing away. The Flaming Lips worked on the album constantly for 2 years because they believed after it their label would drop them due to the financial failure's of their previous albums. Total 10/10 for me. If you enjoyed this check out Deserters Songs by Mercury Rev whose lead songwriter was the former guitarist of The Flaming Lips they were also recorded at the same time in the same studio by the same producer.

Nice dude. Love this album. I was lucky to see it performed live at Desert Daze in 2019. I had kinda slept on "The Gash" til I saw it live. Now I think it's my favorite Flaming Lips song.

if you’re into neopsych stuff like flips anco and spiritualized i’d totally say black foliage: animation music volume 1 by the olivia tremor control is super essential. it’s a mish mash of a lot of different concepts that make it a dreamlike stream-of-consciousness monster experience of an album and its transitions would definitely call for a full continuous listen but it’s so worth it. jeff mangum from nmh played a hand in the creation of it too if that peaks any interest
a few years ago these guys released a live version of this album, it's honestly just as good as the studio version, to be played at obnoxiously loud volume for sure! very glad you liked the record btw, these guys have a great discography :)
first time i saw the _flaming lips_ at a festival they started playing like eyeball dissections on the screens they setup and we were way too high for that and wandered to catch a different stage… suddenly everything has changed is such a great track. _grandaddy - the sophtware slump_ is another really good concept album from that same era i still listen to this day.
This album is phenomenal!!! I was lucky to hear it when it came out cause I'm a longtime fan. It's a shift from thier previous style. There's actually a documentary on the making of this album and it's super in depth and informative. I think it's called the soft bulletin documentary, simply. I'm so glad you heard this record, man!❤
I live in Oklahoma City. Saw the Lips first time in 2003. They played footage from the infamous Japanese movie Battle Royal which wasn't really known in America much at the time outside of art house theaters. It made me trip out lol
man I really wish I could go back to being a teenager and hear this album for the first time again. its one of those albums like merriweather post pavillion that once you hear it at the right age it never leaves you
Amazing album and reaction! But you know what would be even better? Their 2008 album embryonic. It’s kinda mind blowing. I know this might sound absurd, but plenty of that album sounds closer to 2010s Swans on acid than The Soft Bulletin. It’s still unimaginably colourful and replete with ear candy but ends up as a wild, noisy ride totally unpredictable and unlike anything else
I love that manipulated Mellotron sound in Race For The Cure. Pure ear candy that grabs hard and fast. The bashing bombastic drum sound is such a integral counterpoint and is stirring. Love the huge dynamics that keep weaving in and out. I have always been a Yes fan for the complexity and preciseness. Here the complexity is definitely there but it isn't afraid to go rogue between precise sections like in an instant. I don't know if Wayne and Steven hear in their heads before or not (i.e. Brian Wilson), but they get their in a kind of miraculous way somehow more spontaneously, like a happy accident, that is so amazing. I've never experienced any other band I feel is remotely similar. So original and swooping between sugar sweet and huge and, sometimes, scary. I could go on but there's some kind of magic going on that eludes description. All this and we haven't even touched on the amazing song lyrics. Just wow! Love your wow!
It would be amazing to hear you react to Zaireeka, the octophonic Flaming Lips album that is played on four CDs simultaneously. It's an incredibly immersive experience that feels like you are inside the songs. And it is different every time.because of the micro rhythms created by rhe slight variations in how the four CDs sync. Youll need some help to play it though!
Soft Bulletin is so amazing! If you liked this, and you say you love theatric style, then definitely listen to The Evening Descends by the Evangelicals. Its so good, they are like a cross between the Cure and Soft Bulletin era Flaming Lips.

This is the US version which contains what in my opinion are the two weakest tracks on the album....'The Spiderbite Song' and 'Buggin'. These two tracks are absent from the UK version replaced by the track - 'Slow Motion' and the album is all the better for it.
