:) Yay, I'm happy this helps you! I actually used this tutorial to shorten the front crotch on a new pair of Sorcha Classic Slim Trousers I sewed for myself! Thanks for fitting along with me
It feels like narrow (front) hips, relative to a regular sized tush. As I put on weight, this crotch excess gets worse, except for Levis. A good 2 inches of excess in the front, exactly where this video shows, just below the zip. Makes the front legs splay off to the outside, and I'm pulling the pants back up all day long.
@@JSternDesigns If you were sewing them yourself, why didn't you pinch the 3/4" from that location in the pattern and carry to outer edge (like a dart), before cutting the fabric out? Just saw something like this on Fit To Stitch episode this morning. She said excess body space in pants is on purpose, so general size can get them on. Wish Nancy Zieman did a video on pants. I tried making Burda patterned pants, and I'm not happy with the fit, so still working on thoughts before I try again. And your video's hitting right on my trouble area - store bought pants trouble area. Thanks for any info you may have.
I call this "long crotch syndrome" when my pants have this problem! LOL! For us petite gals (I'm 5 ft 3 inch) I always have this issue! Wonderful video. Thank you!
I don't know how to sew but am trying to solve my daughter's issue with her softball pants. going to attempt this by hand. thank you for the great tutorial!!!
Thank you so much for the crotch adjustment lesson .Since I have lost weight, I need to use this for several pants. Most of the lessons I found were for adjusting patterns, not for ready made pants. What a relief it was to see this.
OK, now it will take me 1/4th the time to take out seams! 😂 Thank you, I just bought about 7 new pairs of pants and realized the crotch hangs down to my knees in all of them. I will try what you have taught us here. Thank You!
My friend has been very upset after ordering pants that fit too high, and came crying to me to fix them, so glad this tutorial exist was stumpt for so long, thank you!
So Happy to help... If you need to lower the waistband more than you can using this method. You can also take the waistband off and trim some from the top of the legs... Here's a tutorial for that. ua-cam.com/video/I8iD5ekvBsg/v-deo.html
Thank you so much! I'm so happy this helped you. I actually just used this method to "fix" the front crotch on a new pair of Sorcha Classic Slim Trousers that I finished fitting and sewing. :)
Never knew anything about sewing. Just watching this video after frustration with rise alteration at my sewer - I'm confident I know more than she does! Absolutely perfect tutorial. Thank you.
Thank you so much you have restored my hope and faith in making so many of my pants fit. I have a sewing machine, but I am knew it sewing I dabble, but I’m not a professional I have taken so many pants to the tailors Over the years, and they all seem to have a problem with fixing the rise on a pair of pants their answers is that it cannot be done and here you are showing that it can be done. thank you so much you have a new subscriber. I am excited to go back and watch your channel. Thank you. Have a blessed night.
I feel your pain. I have spent way more on tailors than the two sewing machines I have bought. Now hopefully this tutorial will help me shorten my rise in pants I buy but I am going to make a custom pattern for pants soon so I don't have this problem anymore. Yeahh.
Thank you this is exactly what I needed. All the other tutorials just sew a ‘u’ up to the length wanted, no one actually showed how to take apart the crotch seam and line it all up clean! This helps a lot
This tutorial was so clear and easy to follow-- thank you! You've helped me bring new life to a few pairs of pants I haven't been able to wear comfortably for years and was ready to part with (and boosted my confidence in my alteration skills at the same time)!
I'm so happy to hear that this helped you! I actually used this tutorial myself to bring the front rise up on a pair of pants I sewed for myself! Thanks for watching
Thanks to you and this video I shortened the rise on a pair of blue jeans (the practice pair since they are at end of life) and one pair of my every day dress pants for work. The technique was easy once caught on. I’ve been short-waisted my whole life. Now I have a fix for new purchases as well as what’s in my wardrobe. Thank you.
I don’t know why I didn’t automatically look for a fit tip from you when I was trying to shorten the rise on my jeans….every great tip I’ve ever followed ( that works for me) seems to have been from you!

Welcome to my Channel! I've actually used this tutorial to fix pants I've made for myself when the front crotch was too low! keep me posted if you ever have a specific question! Thanks for watching
Thank you so much for the crotch adjustment tutorial. I have several pair of pants that are to long in the crotch. I followed your steps exactly as you showed and my pants came out perfect. The adjustment that I made was perfect. Thank you again!!
Brilliant and it was so easy to do! I have just made this adjustment on some linen trousers (bought on sale!) that have sat in the cupboard for about 5 years!! Thanks so much for teaching.
The three-step zig-zag is made of three very short straight stitches to create each zig and zag. It looks like a "broken" zig-zag" in your built-in stitches glossary on your sewing machine. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching
Thank you so much, I learned a lot on your video, on the crotch adjustment and the tip about the seam ripper, I have been sewing for many years but I learned something new about the seam ripper today, so thank you💕👍👍
Brilliant and well explained tip. I bought an expensive pair that are too long and I’ve been wondering what the best and easiest way of altering them. Thank you!😊
Hi Jen, This video is truly FABULOUS!! I have a RTW pull-up pant w/ elastic waistband from Talbot that was just feeling too baggy in the front causing me too pull it up all the time. I was getting ready to remove the entire waistband, trim 1.5 “ all along the top of the pants and reattach the waistband when I remembered you had covered rise issues before somewhere. (I took your Happy Pants class a while back.) Luckily I found this video and I wish I could post a picture on here to show you the results. I took out 1.5” from the front rise and .5" from the back, tapering to nothing at about 10" down the inseam on both sides. And I'm here doing the happy dance thanks to you!! Thank you and stay well. Teri Raudebaugh
Thank you soooo much! I just made a pair of pants from a lazily-made pdf pattern where the front and back we're identical. I knew better... But I did it anyway. I thought I had ruined this pretty fabric! Thank you again. You really saved the day!
This is amazing! I ran into a fit problem with a pair of shorts I’ve heavily modified to my weird measurements, and even though I knew how to adjust my patterns, I just could not make the translation to my actually shorts without taking them completely apart. My mind just couldn’t work it out. Thank you for saving my sanity!
Love fab fit tutorials! I was able to get a great fit after watching your video on shoulders and am definitely going to try this one as well. Great job and thank you.
You can take length out of the back crotch as well as taking it out of the front crotch at the same time! You can also take the waistband off in the back and lower the rise by trimming the back waistline and then sewing the waistband back on. Hope this helps, thanks for fitting along with me
Is there a way to do this so the back rise is reduced as well? I ask because I like low-rise pants and they are super hard to find these days! TY for your awesome video❤!!
Thanks so much... and Yes, instead of taking the inseam apart and pulling out the excess just in the front, sew deeper through both the front and back inseams through the crotch... Remember the amount you're taking out is double because you're sewing through both the front and back crotch...Hope this helps! Thanks for fitting along with me
:) Thank you! If you need to shorten both the front and back equally, you can turn the pants inside out and baste in deeper along the seam without taking it out. If you need to take out unequal amounts you can take out the inseam and mark the new stitching lines along the front and back and then baste them together to check the fit before cutting anything off. Hope this helps, thanks for fitting along with me
@J sternDesigns thanks so much for your reply . First time I received a reply from you tubers . Thanks again for your help , now to do my 3 pair pants that I have been waiting to do but did nt now how .. You are the best ! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💕
@@JSternDesigns reply Mine too, but so far this adjustment has helped alot. More videos of this nature would be very helpful for me. Ex: have a 3xl turtleneck that I would like to reduce 2-3 sized just to see if I can. I have watched several tshirt reductions that gave me the idea I can.
Thank you for all the work you put into your videos. Just found you on UA-cam. Great videos! 🥰👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. In the case that the pant is pushing (uncomfortably when walking) on the area of the leg above the knee the area between the knee and crotch. Where do we alter the pant? Would it be better to pull up at waist if it’s an elastic waisted pant (no zipper)? Maybe my problem is not using the correct search words to find the alteration. So happy today this video happened to pop up when I’ve been searching for months, trying to learn the science behind crotch sewing.
So happy you found me! Thank you for subscribing to my channel. Usually when the pants feel snug when you're walking.. the front crotch is too low. Think about the crotch like it's a hinge. The farther away the crotch is, the less range of motion you have. You can use this method to pick up the front crotch to bring it up. You can also pull out excess at the CF waistline first and then see if you need to remove more using this method if you do. Here's another video that explains this fit issue if you were adjusting a pattern: ua-cam.com/video/MLcVycwlcvA/v-deo.html Hope this helps! Thanks for watching
Hi I will be trying to follow you as I alter my trousers I'm 70 years old and at 4ft 11ins I always find they are to long in the crunch. So here goes thankyou Brenda UK
Thank you for all your videos. You are one of the most thorough for almost every kind of fitting issue I've needed. What is the maximum amount of fabric that can be removed with this method? If the front rise needs shortened by 1 3/4", will this still work?
1 3/4" Is a lot to remove this way... You can do it if you have a lot of extra ease along the upper thigh... The deeper you go up the front crotch points, the more your taking off the inseams too. You can also take the waistband off, shorten the zipper and trim the excess length off the front and sew the waistband back on. Here's a tutorial for that (maybe do a combination of these to get the rise right!) ua-cam.com/video/I8iD5ekvBsg/v-deo.html
Fantastic video so easy to understand! Question - how do you adjust both the front and back rise? I have to take about 3 inches total from the crotch of my pants, but the thighs are not really loose so I'm worried about how to feather it down to the original seam. Thanks!!!
If you don't have enough ease on the leg to take all the total amount by sewing through both the front and back inseams and crotch... take as much as you can out (without making the leg too snug.) Then you can take off the waistband and shorten the rise from the top of the waistline too. Here's a tutorial showing how to shorten the zipper and rise in the front... you can also take some of the back ua-cam.com/video/I8iD5ekvBsg/v-deo.html Hope this helps! Thanks for fitting along with me
Thank you for this video. I've been trying ways to alter ready to wear slacks. So many of them have excess in the crotch. I got a pair of linen pants on sale from a major catalog. Waist thighs and backside seem to be just right, not much extra room. but I am able to pinch 3 inches (1 1/2 x 2). I'm going to give this method a try, but it sounds like a lot of inches to remove. Any comments? Thank you
:) In this tutorial I show taking the inseams out several inches... This works great if you need to remove less than 1" from the crotch extensions... An 1 1/2" is a significant amount to remove... Take the inseams out to the knee so you have a longer distance to ease them back together. ...And, I would baste the inseams back together and double check that you didn't take out too much before you cut off the excess. Good Luck & Thanks for watching
@@JSternDesignsthanks for the quick reply. I’ll let you know how it works out, but it will take me a few weeks to get up the nerve to do it. I have tried e success removing the front of the waistband. Taking the three inches from the top at the center and tapering off to each side. And reattaching the waistband. Those pants didn’t have zippers.
I dunno if it has anything to do with my measurements but even Lowrise jeans bunch in the crotch for me like this sometimes.. I’m 5’3 my inseam is about 30 inches & I try to buy a jean with about a 6 inch rise which seems short but it’s not low on me but I find in some jeans even with that Lowrise it still bunches in the front area like this . I need to try this on a pair of jeans I’m not crazy about so if I mess up I’m not mad at myself for ruining them & if it comes out good I’m gonna fix my fav jeans! Thanks for the video this helps so much! ❤
it sounds like you have a longer crotch length in the back vs. the front... The good news is that you can try this without ruining them... Take the inseam out and offset set the seams so the front crotch is extended past the back... then baste the inseam back together and check to see if that's helping before you cut anything off! That way if you don't think it's helping, you can just sew the inseam back together the way it was. Another thing you can do is take some of it off the top by shortening your front fly and trim some off the waistline... Maybe a combination of both these things will help. Here's a link to that tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/I8iD5ekvBsg/v-deo.html Thanks for watching

Thanks for fitting along with me
How to do both front and back rise ...? Love your videos♥️♥️♥️
Thank you!!! I'm loosing weight and have several pairs that need this adjustment.
Me too! I may be posting more videos on how to take in a pants pattern... mine looks like it's a size or two too big!
Thx for this video, the wonder tape & using my seam ripper the right way, new subcriber

@@JSternDesigns Wow! You replied so quick! Much appreciated! 💞🥰. You’ve been a great help! Thank you so much !
Hi I will be trying to follow you as I alter my trousers I'm 70 years old and at 4ft 11ins I always find they are to long in the crunch. So here goes thankyou Brenda UK
Happy to help! Thanks for watching
Great tip for my tool !!!!! Thank you 🙏
Glad it was helpful! Sorry for the delayed response.
Thank you for the tutorial..
You're welcome 😊 Thanks for watching
Thanks for fitting along with me
@@JSternDesigns thank you!
@@JSternDesignsThank you! I am almost 5-4 but petites are too short and missy is too long. I’m so glad I found your channel!
