Amy & Marc, you epitomize the axiom "Keep calm and carry on"! Great examples for your kids. Wishing you all the best in your endeavors! 🥰
Thank you that’s very kind. We were pretty disappointed that day!
@@LostGardensofChateauRosieres While watching I was hoping so much, you would succeed in the first run, since all this work obviously is very strenuous.
What a learning curve; i could almost feel Marc gnashing or grinding his teeth knowing he had the tools but couldn’t get them there. As frustrating as 500sqm limitation to start sounded at the beginning of the episode, it’s probably a blessing as you get to find the little road bumps that in a few short seasons will just be distant memories.
Other comments of live stock in the thread; the last time I saw anything about the creation from scratch of a Rhone Valley vineyard was actually in Morocco, and their plowing is done by camel 😉
Wishing you every success here.
Thank you very much! It was a frustrating day but it’s all a learning curve and you’re absolutely right we are quite pleased there’s not so much right now!!!
I imagine you sitting back thirty years from now and having a good laugh about how you started to plant your first vines for your now prize winning wines. Bon Chance!
I like that - a story to tell in future for a laugh. There weren’t many laughs that day in reality! But it was a beautiful day out.
What a project! You always are taking the long view for success. Your children will love caring for the plants years from now.
Thank you - it's very kind of you to say so!
I kept thinking of everyone in the past who had to plow their fields with horses. My heart went out to you, I know how difficult it is to till hard soil.
We have a fair here each year where they show a couple of working horses. I love watching them. Thanks for your lovely comment.
PS there are people in the village who used to work our land with oxen in the 1960s!
And even before that, there were hand plows for small areas in mountainous regions! Cultivation is true work! You have made a start, a foothold for the work ahead. You should feel strong about that. Yes, the view is very nice indeed! You can’t go wrong!
@@gloriasmestad3803ity so many rules and regulations now to delay. Im sure in times gone by a couple of pigs penned in would have that section plowed up in a week. Apartlently it would be 1 hect per night with two boar! But I don't know regulations of the rhine area 😅 hee he I'd be sneaky
Such a beautiful view. I agree with Marc that you can’t make bad wine with a view like that 😍 Fingers crossed that you are able to find someone to help plow the area. Someday it will all seem funny as you drink the fruits of your labor 🍷Bonne chance 🍀Looking forward to the next vlog 😍😘
Oh, I felt this one in the depths of my soul. I'm married to a farmer but find myself using manual tools all the time. I'm also a terrible grower of grapes, so I'm really keen to watch this process!
Thank you Laura! It’s amazing how it’s never the farmers who tell us what we should have done differently. You always just offer sympathy and understanding!
For someone who’s English is a second language you are extremely clear and concise in your explanations, it all makes perfect sense, thank you Marc
That’s very kind of you to say - thank you!
What a wonderful spot for a vineyard.😊 You'll need a lot of work to get it plant ready. Too bad it's so far from your home. ❤
But a lovely excuse to go for picnics in the hills!
Driving around it’s hard to imagine the amount of work that goes into planting a relatively small vineyard. Good luck to you both!
WoW!! It's amazing! It was rough to watch, I felt sorry for Marc and all of you really, the right tools make a world of difference. It will work out for all of you. Marc has some big beautiful dreams. You guys are awesome!!
Ah thank you! He always bounces back!
You are so committed to your enormous project! Thumbs up!
Thanks Michael!
Marc and Amy, you have such great attitudes which is a great example for your children. The land is so beautiful and the views are stunning. I’m sure the soil will be rich once it’s plowed up and worked a bit. Very inspiring and beautiful vlog. Thank you. xx
Thank you!
If at first, you dont succeed, try, try, try, try, again!! As long as you are learning in the process, it is never a failure! You guys are very inspiring!!! Due to your, and other's, building projects, I was inspired to build a new chik house. I am calling it the Chique Chateau, to go along with my previous Cluckingham Palace. I am way over building it, but I see the quality and attention to detail that you guys do, and I want it to last for many, many years. I may even try to find an old, used chandelier to hang inside. As I said, you inspire me!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
That’s just wonderful! Thank you! I love it when somebody sees what’s behind it for us - the adventure and the ambition to push what’s possible. So many people just seem to see us as fools for trying something that’s not straightforward for us to do with zero errors!
How incredibly disappointing. I'm sure Marc anticipated that things might not have gone well. I couldn't beleive it when he said you were going to try to rotovate that much - and plant in one day. Courage, mon ami. I'm sure you figured something out as the video was one month ago and the two of you always use your heads to find solutions others might not think of. It looked a lovely day and the children seemed to have had a great time, so there's that. They will look back and know they were present when this heritage was begun. ❤ P.S. Juliette has the most amazing eyes! 😍
We are rooting for your success Amy and Marc! Sending lots of good wishes to you both! ❤
OMG, such a massive undertaking! 👍🏼 🍇🍷
I am glad you got started! I know it did not go the way you were hoping. I'm praying you found someone to plow the field, I want you to be successful at getting your vines in!
What a beautiful area. I appreciate your using what you have to get on with the job, even when it doesnt work out. It really is about the journey, learning each step of the way. I appreciate your taking us along. We live on 40 acres in the Missouri Ozarks and the work never ends. You truly have to love it. And that's the reason I'm a Patreon, because i see that same love and care for the land in you and Marc. Looking forward to the next episode.
Reading comments like this makes me feel so much better. We get a lot of judgement for our mistakes but it’s strange because for us it’s not about running towards an end goal as fast as we can. We’re on a journey that we want to enjoy!
@@LostGardensofChateauRosieres Absolutely!
We used a small tiller on our huge garden. I wish we had the large tools as well. Great job!❤
Thanks Dodi!
Another delightful video....thanks! I agree with the other comments that the two of you exhibit a calmness that is a positive example to all of us. 🙂
Thank you so much!
You inspire me to keep going on my seemingly endless garden tasks!
You are truly a lovely couple taking on big tasks with such grace and while caring for your children as well! You are to be commended! I hope and pray all will work out for the best. Big hugs from British Columbia, Canada.
You’re very kind Norma, thank you!
Wishing you success in this next project. A French man with land is never satisfied with what it can provide for his family. It is his heritage, it is his love of life. But that's why you married him Amy. The adventure never ends.😊
And on another note, looks like Juliette will have dad's expressive abilities! 😍 I saw her peeking from behind you and give her noted opinion. 😉
Great job turning a disappointing day into a lesson learned! Keep staying positive. I grew up on a farm in Indiana and loved Marc's efforts. He is correct in focusing on the soil prep. I can't wait to see what you come up with to plow the field. Your friend Jon is a good friend. This was a great example of teamwork, watching Jon and Marc working at getting the grass down and tilling the soil. Did you finally use a plow or weigh down the tiller more? Christine and I would have loved to help. Take care, and keep moving forward!
Tim! I need to write to you and Christine. It’s so crazy at the moment but Margot arrives next week. We’re off to the vineyard today! I’ll send a sneak peak!
Amy and Marc, this was perhaps the most enjoyable chateau UA-cam video I have seen in quite some time. It is so helpful to have you walk through everything verbally ahead of time and then see you both in action.
Sorry that you had difficulty getting the soil prepared for planting the vines, but I have full confidence that you will persevere. Thanks, and all the best, guys!
Glad you enjoyed it!
You are an amazing couple. I so wish the best for you in this venture as you work so hard at all you do while caring for those gorgeous little ones. Respect!
You’re very kind. Thank you!
Marc & Amy register with all of the schools for enology and the government for student internships to work in your plot…. Great work low $$$
I’m not sure our plot is big enough yet - they’d be done planting in a couple of hours! But definitely worth looking into in future! Marc studied oenology so has some good connections.
How exciting! Yes, when I saw the lovely field, my first thought was that you would need to mow the grass, then turn the soil with a tractor and a turning plow, then several times go over the soil with a disk plow. As Marc said, go over with a harrow to smooth out the soil last. It will be a wonderful vineyard. Janice from Arkansas USA
Definitely what we wanted to do, but we struggled to get anybody who could do it for us and it's too far to take our own tractor (plus we don't have a harrow).
You wouldn't have to harrow it. Just smooth as you plant with a rake, I think.
A lot of hard work but exciting times ahead.
Thank you! We're excited to try again tomorrow hopefully!
Wow those stunning views ! So frustrating without the right equipment, Marc knowing what he has at home could get it done in a jiffy. Best of luck to get it all ploughed & planted, a friendly kind person might help out with equipment.
What a fantastic view, gosh I could sit and watch that view for hours
What a great project. I will never complain again about turning my garden at planting time. Love your can do spirit. It will work out. Thank you for shsring.
Yum, I love Syrah! Hope the vineyard does well.
Bon courage!
Merci Janet
The site is indeed incredibly beautiful.
While we weren't planting vines in France, we were trying to dig a garden plot on the Canadian prairies and we had what seemed like acres of twine and wire fencing bit wrapped around the blades of the rototiller. What a nightmare; it took hours to free the blades! On the up side, what a beautiful plot of land you are working and I've no doubt you will succeed (just like we did - we've just starting to harvest potatoes, beets, and tomatoes from our garden this year). All the best!
Everything is always 2x harder than you think it will be!
Wow! You two are amazing individuals. You work so very hard, and no matter what obstacles come your way, you carry on. Great attitude!!❤
Thank you that's very kind!
It’s a beautiful place and a great start. Great to know the soil is good. ❤
Hello family John and his little boy. I was upset for you that things didn't quite go to plan but you must pat yourselves on the back for the good progress you made without the right equipment. Could you not hire a plow from a farmer near by? You will get it done Marc don't get discouraged at the first hurdle or get to frustrated you can win this challenge. It's so exciting you are starting a vineyard. Xxxx ❤
Oh Marc, you're an inspiration for anybody wanting to tackle a difficult job! I admire your perseverance, and I think that your vines will thrive under your care. I take my hat off to you both, you're such hard working, decent, genuine people. My very best wishes for this (and all of your other) projects. Much love and big hugs xx
Just seeing this Mark and praying you have had success! It is amazing views!!!
My parents had a vineyard. Lots of hard work. Best of luck!
Lol ‘it’s a lot of paper because we are in France’ very good reason for paperwork…..
Brilliant people 😊
Lovely country!
We love it here!
My goodness your perseverance! Such hard work! But what a beautiful plot of land. The vistas look incredible. 💚
It’s so beautiful. You can’t see the mountains so clearly on this but it’s possible to see the pre-alps from there most days!
Your longer reply was perfect Amy. I despair that the selfish comments of some, will force you to abandon your wonderful videos. Please don’t be influenced by the views of the ‘all about me’ viewers. They are no loss when they throw their toys out of the pram and move on!
Thank you! Mostly I ignore them, especially if they’re trolls. But we’ve been getting quite a few of ones like this recently so I wanted to reply. Maybe it will give others some perspective too!!!
Great video! I learned something new about wine & vines. Your videos are always informative & interesting. Keep up the good work! ❤️🇨🇦
Thank you!
I do hope you managed to get someone with a tractor to turn the soil for you! Wishing you every success.
It was so lovely seeing your children watch on with excitement and see you find ways around making it happen. I enjoyed watching my dad on our farm as a child.. precious memories and a good foundation to knowing you have to work hard to get things done in life. Looking forward to seeing it all come together.
What a place, you will never get bored of that view while pruning the vines.
You should use the 1 tooth decompactors 50 or so cm long with a tractor in the rows for the whole plot you plan to plant new now in one go even if it takes a few years time to plant, before plowing and rotovating. I hope you have 60cm + vine protectors, too.
We did find a solution which iv hope you’ll approve of!
@@LostGardensofChateauRosieres 🤣
You have to plant but do they have to survive? We planted many first time vines and trees in our vineyard (too cold on our plot) and orchard (just right for apples and pears) to have them fail for many reasons, the cost is the cost but learning about your specific land is always a valuable lesson. Replanting is also a learning experience. Best of luck.
You’re absolutely right - that’s the key question, especially with us planting so late. We’ve been discussing watering a lot recently!
It's a very good project. We learn a lot from our failures. Otherwise, it wouldn't be fun.
So true!
Oh my such a disappointment not to be able to do your planting that day. I hope you are able to find someone to do the plowing for you. There is always so much to accomplish and never enough time.
Never fear, we’ve found a way out! We should be able to plant tomorrow and show you next week!
Marc and Amy, I wish you much success. When you get a good plow, it will be better. Our vineyards are doing poorly in BC with some sort of pest. It was on the news today, and the growers are very nervous. I didn't listen long enough to find out the cause, unfortunately. That land is beautiful. ❤
good luck!
I just love Marc's accent
Me too 😉
Good start 👍❤ it’s beautiful there
Thank you! It’s a beautiful place to be!
lol Dave had a lot to say while you were explaining your new vineyard! 🦃🦃🦃
He was so annoying following us around everywhere. Marc had to hide behind that wall to film!!!
Cannot wait to see more, fantastic wine out of this appellation!
Do you like it? Marc loves it but ironically I’m not so sure. I’m more of a southern Rhône valley drinker!
Such a big undertaking but it'll be well worth it love how you explain everything
Thank you!
Much hard work for you sending positive thoughts your way 🌻🌻🌻
So inspiring!
What an interesting video. Amazing what you take on. No wonder its hard to finnish the coach house. You have brilliant long term goals and live in such a beautiful place with your lovely family.
Thank you!
I think you need to bring out the heavy equipment. That is a lot of work for just manpower. I can see you get very enthusiastic and go all out.
Wait until you see next week!
What a challenge but it will happen.
Wow that's a job and a half, I wish you both well with your Vine's it's a shame that they are not nearer to home but just think what your children have in the long run hope everything turns out well and good luck take care.💕🌼🤗
Thank you!
Here's s to you finding a nice man with a tractor and all the kit you need asap.
Thank you! Great strides have been made and we'll share them next week. We're off to the plot tomorrow.
I just wanted to say how much I enjoy watching your channel. Explaining what you are doing and why, helps us grow also. It's fun to see comments from all over the world and how things are done elsewhere.
So as long as it's possible for you, I'll look out for your videos.
Greetings from Picardie
Thank you very much!
Hopefully you will find a kind local farmer who will plough the area for you xx
That’s definitely the ultimate aim you’re absolutely right Karen! We need to get to know people in the valley!
@@LostGardensofChateauRosieres I have a very nice farmer here in Spain who comes to plough my ‘front garden’ which has a mix of almonds, olives and fruit trees. It is well worth paying him to come and do it a few
Times a year xx
Honestly want to pull out our rotiller to help but travel from Washington with it tow would be another challenge and not helpful.
The vines would be lovely there
😂😂😂 we appreciate the thought!
I wish you a lot of subscribers. I don't know, if also liking other comments helps, but I try to mention your channel.
Thank you that's very kind!
BEST WISHES TO YOU
Thank you!
You will make it happen ❤
Such a difficult task , I am sure you will succeed Mark.😊
Thank you! 😃
How is it going.
Praying you make it
Get it can be a no dig vineyard experiment !
Amazing work 🌺🇳🇿
Hoping you can get a very local frmer to help with a tractor nearby to rotate soil is there a local store/neighbour who knows someone who knows someone? Fingers crossed for your project
Just sad that you weren't able to get the vines in the ground. Hoping you can quickly get someone to turn the soil so the vines can establish this year.
Great channel xx
Replay sense missed beginning 😊
Hope you enjoy!
Why is Marc strimming and rotovating in sandals - safety boots my friend, safety boots!
👋👍❤️
How frustrating! But so passionate about what your trying to accomplish well done.
Thank you. We may have found a way through!
Just wondering if you can buy an old tractor, a cheap one, and leave it there to work your land? You can cover it with tarp . You will need one anyway to till between rows to keep weeds down.
It's a great idea but it's too exposed there to leave it - it's just a random field beside a road. I'm pretty sure it would get stolen quite quickly! We're going to need local solutions really.
Forgive me for being direct but you cannot use a string trimmer on such a large area. You nee a zero turn mower like a John Deere.
Also you cannot use a rototiller to cultivate such a large area. You need a farm tractor with a plough attachment first to open jp the grou d, then use a harrow attachment to make the soil finer and more manageable.
I would onkt cultivate wher the grape vines will be planted and grassed llanes brtween the rows for foot traffic.
Also you eed to procure in advance all the suppkot posts and wirez in betwes the posts to support tbe vines.
I suggest you visit a nearby commercial and operating vineyard to see how that is done.
I hope my comments are helpful and that you accept them in a spirit of help and suppoert, a d not as criticism.
You are a beautiful family and i wish you every success. I love your accent and i will be following you, every step of the way. Robert, Tennessee, USA.❤❤❤😅
Hi Robert, thanks for your lovely response. We always appreciate constructive suggestions like yours and value the time you put into them, and the time you take so carefully watching our videos. Thank you! Marc actually studied wine-making and growing as part of his agricultural engineering degree, and comes from a big wine-making family. The biggest problem we have is availability of suitable equipment at this site because it's so far from where we live. Your comment about the grassed areas in between is a good one and yes we will definitely have this eventually, but at the moment we need to 'tame' the meadow. I think you'll be interested in our solution! All the very best, Amy
Hope you can get a tractor up there the ground looks very hard. If you can get a jump on the next piece of land to be planted and maybe plough it at the same time. The winter months will help to break up the soil. 🤞😊😊😊 good luck with it all.
Thank you! We ended up going for a slightly different solution but we’re pleased with it!
Really loving your videos. You take on so much with small children. Good on you both. Cotes du Rhone is one of my favourite wines. I studied wine as part of my work. Are you going to make your own wine or sell you grapes. I live in 🦘 another fine wine region.
I think (and hope) that we will make our own wine. It’s really the only reason we went into this. Cornas is a very small but quite well regarded appellation. I do enjoy Australian wine too!
When is the next vlog coming out?
Soooon. Sorry for the delay. We were doing dailies over on the other channel for ages.
Just a suggestion - have you checked into possibly renting a tractor with a plow disk? Here in the USA we can rent equipment for such things as needed. Usually it is a per day charge. Do you have any places there you could rent from and have them deliver and pick up the tractor for you?
I wonder if a couple of goats would do the trick pretty quickly.
We've talked about goats but they're pretty indiscriminate and will just eat everything!
🌟👍🍀💐
Super, les enfants pourront faire du poney chez Eole en attendant que la vigne pousse...
Bonne idée !
HAVE YOU LOWERED THE DIGGER STICK ?
