079 to me always has looked less fussy than equivalent or newer divers in this price range & love the hand set which fills the dial beautifully. A unique watch that I think will in time will become a cult classic.
Totally agree. This release sort of snuck in between the last generation of seiko divers and the newest ones! They didn’t make them long either. Thanks for watching and your insight :)
I went back and forth between these 2 for a while. In the end, got the 079, because the proportions are much closer to the 6159. The 187 in shortening the lugs to make the case fit more wrists, looses the iconic shape. I showed both to my wife, and she instantly recognized the better shape of the 079, having vever seen either watch.
Thank for the review. Ik like the spb187 more. Altough the 079 is a step up with beautiful bezel, it suffers of its 6R- movement and specially the regulation. Of course if you want exact timekeeping, take a quartz, or use your smartphone but... Why don't the regulate it as a lot of microbrands do🤔 (mostly NH35/36). And speaking of microbrands, they offer way better bangs for the bug. I have about 10 Seiko's, new and old, but loosing interest in the brand.
I don't understand why they don't just regulate at the factory. It must be a cost versus how many people care calculation. The accuracy doesn't really bother me because I switch watches almost every day, but I still think it is unacceptable in a $1k watch. Especially when I can buy a Steinhart for half the price that will run COSC.
Outside the monster the mm200 & 300 are the ones that speak to me most & having tried one on at the jeweler last week ( who were asking for over a grand UKBP) I knew there's just far too many options I'd prefer with at least a SW movement to the tune of 1k+ as opposed to a 50hr PR nh35, but it did wear well.
I totally understand that criticism. It is interesting Seiko can get away with the variable and often times really bad performance on the 4R and 6R movements. Meanwhile a SW movement or even a Miyota can offer much better accuracy.
Another Seiko that keeps their fanboys on the fence. Happy for them, always seems bit bulky to me though. Thanks Jason, be well mate, cheers. PS Hey! Where is ActSciGuy22 (aka "First")? Summer holidays?
I own the SPB077 but bought it only after I found out that I actually can pull of an SBDX017 MM300 on my 6-inch wrist without any problem. I don't know how Seiko manages to do that, but the weight and size of the MM300 kind of disappear as soon as it is on the wrist. And the same goes for the SPB077. And due to the smaller dial the MM300 looks actually smaller than the MM200. Both are incredible great watches. I ditched the bracelet on both for a CWC and Phoenix Nato strap. I don't like the SPB187. The date cutout is the laziest thing I have seen in some time. Also, the case lines of the SPB077 are more true to the 6215-7000 and 6159-7000 which was exactly what I was looking for. I don't mind the handset. Maybe I will replace the needle seconds hand with stop light seconds hand. But hour and minute hand are the most legible things one could wish for. Great review. Was not aware that you still can get the SPB079 new.
Great observations all around. The way Seiko makes cases that defy their specifications on wrist is just magic! Congrats on the true Marine Master. If I ever get the chance to try one on in person I will definitely check it out! Yes, the date window on the SPB187 is shockingly bad and lazy. My only guess is in the rush to comply to the new ISO standard they rushed the dial, which is also why you get that extra lume plot everyone hates :P

Great review! I am in the process of reviewing the PADI version of this generation of MM200!
Oh nice, I will check it out!

Yes that makes sense. I was really blown away by this version and if I didn’t have the 187 I would have picked it up for sure!
Great compairson. The bezel on this is super cool. I wish the 079 had the 187 handset
Same, I liked the big arrow more than I thought, but I still like the 187 hands better.
Excellent watch, I’ve worn mine everyday for the last 3 years and it’s held up nicely.
I loved this one so much, I would have picked it up if I didn't have the SPB187!
this ar best assessment in youtube for my watch thank you!
Glad it was helpful!

@@JustWatches1 Regulation has also something to do with attention that is put in a watch....

Sorry busy with Work today just getting back around to my UA-cam’s 😅
Yes, this one is on the bigger side for sure. I love that you noticed ActSciGuy22 was missing!

Putting the style and colour bezel from the SPB079 on the SPB187 would look great. 👌
That would look awesome, I agree!
Do you know which size the dials are on both? The old version looks more balanced but bigger, the new one looks a bit more bulky like a mm300.
Darn, I actually don't and I don't have both anymore.
Great watch, even better guy
Haha, thank you :P
I'd like to see this watch with date @ 6
Yes, I think that would make it even better!
Nice looker
Agree, very sharp watch.
7th
By far, you can still read "7" as "1", but the end won't match...
7th is still in the top 10!
