I am so glad to see you enjoying this anime as much as myself. I keep trying to convince my friends to give it a chance. Wickedly underrated. Thank you for your reaction.
Here's some additional thoughts about this incredible story. Even though they speak of hatred so much, love always prevails - that's one of the things about this story. That's what happens with Atom, Sahad, Gesicht, etc. If you think about it, hate did not win in any part of their stories at all, love prevailed in the end - That is, except maybe for Abullah, which was infused with human hatred and in turn tried to destroy the world. Hatred had him. And mostly because the Teddybear kinda made it happen, and it also hated humanity. FYI, the Teddybear was a secret super-robot (or super AI, since it can't move) from Thracia and it is hinted that he was the one pulling the strings behind the whole war against Persia and the vengeance plot (that's what the pinocchio metaphor implies, for example - Pinocchio being Pluto and Geppetto Abullah, but Uran could feel that Geppetto was also being controlled by someone). Which is funny because, in the story, Thracia claims not to have any robots of mass destruction, yet they created a robot that was pretty much the source of all the destruction and death in this story. With the Teddybear dead, and possibly Brau1589 as well (since, when the lance was removed, he would die), Atom is really the last of the super-robots to stand, a symbol of love, not hatred.
Hatred doesn't exist because humans are "stupid". Robots also started to develop all sorts of emotions, even the negative ones, as soon as they started to evolve beyond what separated robots from humans. Hatred, like any other emotion, at least in the world Osamu Tezuka/Naoki Urasawa helped built, is part of the package all higher intelligent beings are destined to deal with. Imo the message of Pluto the anime/manga is that although robots are way more advanced, and by extent more "perfect" in many ways than humans, they just barely started to understand the many complexities that come with life itself. The difference is that robots have way more capabilities technologically speaking to both construction (or the power for good) and destruction. In the past it was still controllable cause robots always followed rules (i.e. never to harm humans), but now that more and more robots will start to look closer and closer to Atom/Sahad-Pluto/Gesicht, the world will probably face many other challenges regarding the Human-Robot interaction (besides the very known problems caused between humans themselves, and now issues within robots against robots). But there's hope. All the robot heroes and humans that died, plus Pluto being saved from hatred by Atom/Gesicht (and Uran a bit), will pave the way as examples to what happens with living beings in a neverending cycle of Hatred. That's way way more complex and powerful than just the old "humans are stupid" formula.
I love the conversation between Helena and Atom. It counters two of the original premises: 1) Robots can't cry and 2) Robots can't lie. To become a perfect robot is to become human; to become a perfect human one becomes like a robot.
Thanks for doing these reactions! And again, here’s hoping we’ll see Monster on the channel at some point. :) Along with some other classic anime you’ve never gotten around to, perhaps…
I really appreciate you reacting to Pluto, the underrated masterpiece (I think you're like the only reactor here who actually reacted to this series and also enjoyed and was intrigued by it as much as I did even though it has a lot of heartbreaking moments 😭💔) and I agree that it literally deserves as much praise and recognition as those popular ones. In fact, this immediately became one of my top favorite animes and I hope more people would be able to discover this mind-blowing robotic gem. 🙌🏻💯💥💖💎🌟☀️
Monster is 100% a masterpiece worth watching. It's a classic Urasawa style thriller with way more complexity and nuance. But to be frank, I don't think it's they type of show to get tons of views especially with its length. It would have to be more of a passion watch
Glad you liked it, I also gave it a 9/10. Interesting how Monster has this 144p (just kidding -- 480p) _low_ quality reputation. If you track down the right disc set or streaming service, it looks good, as others have pointed out. Maybe the Netflix one is horrible, it's not available in my region. The year(s) it was released had titles like Samurai Champloo, Paranoia Agent, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG, Samurai 7, Eureka Seven, Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid, and Bleach. Most of these have aged really well.
I am a little embarrassed to admit it took me way too many episodes to realise this is a remake of Astro Boy especially considering that I went why does this feel familiar halfway through episode 1. When I finally twigged I went it's Astro Boy and I even know what story they are remaking. I remember watching the Astro Boy cartoon cartoon in the late 70's early 80's (damm I'm old). There was a multipart story arc that involved a giant robot designed for mining on Mars that had a massively powerful mining laser built into its head. The project was abandon can't remembered why and they removed the robots head as it was deemed to dangerous. Unlike most robots the mining robot had it's brain in it's chest so it could still function without a head. I think there was an accident when it was being transported to be fitted with a new head and it malfunctioned, going on a rampage and started attacking the strongest robots based on their horse power which is how they rated the power of robots trying to replace it's head of course Astro boy at 100,000 horse power was in it's sights. The story and the series stuck in my head because in a series nominally aimed at teens it handled some pretty dark and serious themes.
When I read this manga years ago, it was really confusing as well, but the show made it a little easier to follow. Essentially the real Abullah's is dead. But his last memories of hate were put into the "robot" Goji. Turning Goji into the "fake" Abullah we follow throughout the story. Goji is lying to himself to make him believe he is the real Abullah, aka "human". Bora is basically a "vessel" for Goji. My first thought was that Sahad and Pluto were also other personalities of Goji but no. Sahad, is the son of the real Abullah (human). Yes, he's a robot son but so is Atom. When Sahad is tricked by Goji; who is pretending to be Abullah; into transferring his mind to the robot "vessel" Pluto he inherits his father's hatred.
To recap it: - Abullah: Persia robot scientist, creator/father of Sahad, died in war. - Sahad: Abullah robot son. Studied flower in Dutch to terraform Persia desert. - Goji: Tenma first perfect robot, inserted with Abullah hatred. - Pluto: Natural disaster robot, inserted with Sahad brain. - Bora: Originally Persia terraforming robot, now Goji world ender vessel.
Monster is actually in 720p. Lol. I know it's not HD or anything, but slightly better than what you were expecting. That said, a fan project has also upscaled it to 1080p if you wanted to go that route. As others may have mentioned in the comments already, I'm not sure if Monster is going to pull in a ton of views or anything. It actually might get more views than Pluto because its considered a classic, but I'm not sure. Regardless, I think you should watch it anyway because it's just worth it. I think you'd be glad to have seen it.
cant believe you're passing on monster because of the quality of the animation while to me it has that appeal because of the quality. hope you do watch the series though
I'm not sure how well Urasawa's style would lend to the rest of the series as I think he's more thriller/mystery focused and I just can't imagine all of Astro Boy is a thriller/mystery.
Yeah ... this is a "What if" of the Pluto arc in Astroboy ... is quite different, but still tackles a lot of the same plot points. Urasawa made something great, different but respecting the original work and it's author. This anime adaptation is pretty accurate, but still leaves some things out, so reading the manga is still recommended
Any TV from the last 5-6 years should be able to upscale the 480p DVDs (or SD streaming) of Monster just fine. Oftentimes the fan upscale projects seem to introduce all sorts of bugs, duplicate frames, softness and detail loss. But it’s good to know that there are folks who care about Monster enough to give it a try. :)

Thank you very much for your very nice reaction about this series. If you have an opportunity, please read original comic Plute. Not totally, but the story is different.
The manga has the two concluding scenes flipped; the final scene of the manga is Brau 1589 throwing the spear into the teddy bear. I think the story works better that way, since what he's doing is actually the antithesis of the whole "nothing comes from hatred" message... in fact, it almost undermines it entirely. I mean, yes, Brau 1589 shows some mercy in sparing the president, but-since the spear was supposedly keeping him alive-the last thing he ever does is the "hateful" act of killing the teddy bear, and the audience is led to understand that Atom's world is better off for it. So RIGHT after hitting you with wave after saccharine wave of good-old shounen morality, the story shows us that something good can come from "hate" after all. Whereas in the anime, I think it's easier to overlook the significance of Brau 1589's violence since it's not the literal ending shot that the audience is left to reflect on. Again, I feel the ordering in the manga has more impact, but in either case the scene's inclusion shows that the story isn't entirely one-dimensional or overly naive with its themes.

You are wrong for saying that He isn't wrong for believing free will exists. Its our individual belief. If you believe that's the case then your statement about hatred not being a product of free will is correct. He believes that free will does exist. Hatred is a response to certain stimuli and not a conscious choice. On the other hand if free will does exist, then people are responsible for their actions, and hatred could be a result of perceiving others as making bad choices freely. Both statements are correct.
Honestly, I couldn't give it any less than a 10/10. My only problem with it, is.... It just doesn't feel that good to watch. It's really really just fantastic, but my God it's so fuckin sad. That's not necessarily a criticism, but I don't necessarily like being sad lol. I am confused though that the title says 10 but you said 9 in the video?

Amazing anime and I got surprised it was made in 2004 or earlier. Urasawa is a master storyteller.
Monster s low animation quality adds to the haunting nature of the show. It disturbed me too but it works
In the end, Pluto and Atom and Gesicht were all the Greatest Robot on Earth
