    Love the simplicity, its so interesting how a good idea can now spread around the world by video, this would be understandable, even if the viewer could not speak English.

    Ideally you should run the system for a day or two without adding fish. After a day or two you can add fish and let it run for a week 10 days before you can start putting in you seeds. Since this system is small in size .. it would take atleast 8 weeks before you can see the results of cycling

    • @fedebla70
      @fedebla70 9 років тому +4

      +vinil ratnakaran You have to wait not less than 1 month then you can add fish. The batteries need time to start their job. Great idea Vinil.

      Federico Blasi Great observation ... One month is also workable .. one just need to watch out for mosquito breading. This is one of the reason i add fish in a few days from setting up the system. But the nitrification cycle will take 8 weeks atleast.

    Vinil I have seen a lot of mini systems that people put on kick starter and other areas that I know are bound for failure. I have to say I really like this one. especially because of the economics of it. I saw a kickstarter the other day that was nothing more than a mason jar with a net pot in it. They were selling for $40 a piece.
    great job. Just subd

      Sometimes new products are just good advertising or packaging.
      Eg, there is a particular item in gardening that is $10-20, depending on the size you need, but you could solve the same problem by filling up your large pots with empty plastic bottles. Same end result of keeping your large pots light and not having to fill the entire thing with potting soil.

    This is a clever design. I think I would modify it to draw almost 1/2 the amount of water into a cup/2ltr bottle that tips over & floods the entire grow bed every 15 minutes (like an ebb & flow.) so that the water could be cycled 2 times in an hour. (If you did this, you could run it off of a deep cycle battery at night, and a solar cell during the day.) Very neat idea. Thank you for sharing this.

    I actually tried doing this but adding a siphon mechanism on the top and it worked. I'm very pleased with the way it looks. So for all you out there wondering if you can add a bell siphon it works well.

    • @dominickaroo97
      @dominickaroo97 8 років тому

      +Edwayne Sangalang I looked at the way the aerosol lid made its purpose but I thought that I can do more than that . I thought that I can add A level with a bell siphon that is mainly of parts from PVC caps and pipes. what I already had was a half inch PVC pipe for drinking water and a 2 inch PVC pipe. I cut about 3 to 4 inches of the half inch PVC pipe and attached on a 2 inch reducer so I can mount it in the funnel of the water jug. I had no idea what to use to glue with since we're having fish in the same water so I used hot glue since it was safer. so what I have left is two and a half inches of the thinner PVC pipe stuck out from the base. so I cut about 3 inches of the larger PVC pipe and placed a cap on it to make the bell. and then place two slits inside of the large PVC pipe to provide a level where the vacuum system will stop. since we already have the water pump with the first design I wanted to use it the same way so i kept that the same way. I notice that there was a problem on the bottom half of the funnel for the water would not cause enough pressure so I attached a half inch drip tube on the bottom and inserted another tube to slow down the water flow. any more questions just ask

    Having worked with fountains, etc for years....I hate to run water lines on the outside of my projects. That being said may I offer what i think may be an improvement . Use a solid piece of tubing...[no connector], and run it up the center of your funnel. Preferably attach a water bell to the top, or just let it gurgle out the tube. [of course you'd have to drill a hole in your cap or drain piece to accommodate. Also it's a good idea to wash off those pebbles, before adding. I hope this helps.

      +Yeshwanth Naidu Those clay pebbles are called LECA (light Expanded Clay Aggregate) also knows as Hydroton. Very porous and has a lot of surface area where the bacteria can colonize.

      +Yeshwanth Naidu Plants does not require mud ... plants need only 3 things to grow 1, sunlight. 2 nutrients and 3 water. Plants take up nutrients that are dissolved in water. If you supply nutrients and sunlight then the grow media (mud or gravel) is only to hold the plant upright. However in Aquaponics mud will not work as it will reduce the water flow and the system will fail.

    I recently made one of these little mini-ponics systems. I haven't added my fish yet as I want to put filtered aquarium water in it. I am hoping to be able to get some water out of a filter from a freshwater tropical fish tank from a local aquarist or pet store. This will boost the system and shorten the cycling start up time from what I have read. I used pea gravel I had on hand for the growing media. I think I will grow some greens in it for a nice snack salad.
    Thanks so much for the inspiration.

      Sounds good ...adding water from an existing aquarium will definitely help. post some pics of your build if possible.

    Ver good & I have two things to say
    1- you a timer to save electricity, no need for continuous watering
    2- better to have small filter for the returned water

    I have several of those water bottles. I wish I could see inside the top part so I can do exactly what you did.
    Could you do one before you paint it black so I can see inside? I love this idea! The best one I've seen so far.
    Simple and easy.
