- Endorphins are your body’s natural painkillers. The pain she experienced was years prior but it was enough to train her to release them when a trigger occurred later.

No trigger warning?
Apparently trigger warnings don’t really make people avoid content. But it does prime someone to be anxious and only focus on the negative. I want you to feel these issues are manageable because they are.
Genuinely sorry if this video stressed you out.

I laughed so hard when you played a video of a dude spraying a car when you talked about pissing yourself
underrated comment 👌
I think I was laughing at stock video man's unnerving smile at that part.
Thought this was a Chubbyemu video at first.
"AM" is a 17-year-old girl presenting to the emergency room... unconscious
ha me too
I only noticed after seeing your comment
Glad i wasn't the only one
Legit thought that Chubbyemu had changed his channel name before I remembered what this channel was (and how much I LOVE it)
Just as I like Chubyyemu's earlier videos better, it's the same here, but I do unserstand that these will tend to get more views and are less work
This is the first time I've heard "fawn" as part of fight, flight, fawn, freeze. Quite an eye-opener. This makes abusive relationships and dictators make a lot more sense. Thanks so much for making this video! I know you make fun of yourself for the video part, but please keep making fantastic content even if the video part is just off topic stock footage.
I'm just so glad this channel is back
The gap between this video and the last one was small for this channel. It can't be back because it was never gone.
@@Huntracony I meant it more generally, in regards to the last few videos together.
@@Huntracony Yeah I almost did not believe my eyes when this video came up in my notifications. Long time no see for this place but I am happy that uploads still come every so often!
Just went back and checked when they first started releasing videos. Cannot believe that it has been 6/7 years. Time flies.
Extensive research, recommends books and links, narrated and edited and no ad placement. What a hero
Just imagine that this is a supportive comment (but seriously glad you're still making videos)
He posted a video to his other channel last week too

I can’t tell you how happy I am to see you publish videos again. Graduated in Phil and Polisci a year ago and your channel is still without question one of my favorites. I already sent the Uncanny Valley video to a close friend getting her PhD in behavioral psychology and she loved it. Your animation style and videos are consistently excellent. Anyway without geeking out too much it’s just good to see even these couple videos come out. Thanks for everything Jesse.
Nice to see another video from you! They’re always a treat
When the world needed him most... He came back
This video needs to be more recommendet by the youtube algorythm. I just randomly stumbled across your video
I really love the moderate use of music in your videos. For me it makes them so much easier to focus and process what going on.
I had to read this in my psyche class like a week ago, the story comes from the book “the boy who was raised as a dog” and the chapter is “the raven” if I remember correctly
Its definitely always helpful seeing a new thing from you :D
Been here quite long now and I always look forwards to the next video, even if they might take a while. Love your work man!
Glad you're back! Great video, as always 😁
Top notch humor! It was a tough topic to stomach, and I had to watch it in two parts, but I'm glad to have watched the video. Thanks!
Good to see you back again!
Wow, I don't know what to say, but thank you for making this video.
I've been experiencing intense anxiety symptoms regarding a specific series of events from my past, symptoms like intense anxiety/sickness/dizziness/shaking at the mention of a name or seeing a face, memories from the events popping up at random and causing me to go into anxious and/or depressive episodes, losing sleep over thoughts of these events, etc, etc. I had never even considered PTSD as being an explanation for why I experience these symptoms, but this video kind of opened my eyes and hit me like a ton of bricks. The symptoms you described in this video lined up almost perfectly with what I have been experiencing. Even hearing the symptoms described in this video triggered an anxiety response because it made me thing of the events. So because of this, I decided to take the first steps and take a series of online evaluations to see if I might have PTSD, and all tests came back as saying I have a high chance of having PTSD. Now these are just internet tests, not a formal diagnosis, obviously, but it was incredibly validating to realize that there may be an explanation for why I experience what I experience and that I'm not crazy for experiencing these symptoms. I think this may be the first step in me being able to seek out help and treatment for what I've been going through. Lord knows its been affecting my life very negatively for so long.
It feels weird to get so personal in a UA-cam comment, but I am seriously thankful that you made this video and that I came across it.
Jesse’s back baby!
He's back!
I'm so glad this channel isn't dead! The style is a bit different from your old videos, but I like it.
Ringing the bell after noticing I outrageously missed your last 4 videos.
"Slightly helpful to somebody somewhere." A worthy aspiration, imo.
This is really important, thank you for this video!
Excellent video. Thank you. I just love the style of your explanations and your bone-dry humour. This was definitely informative for someone somewhere.
I love this channel. You make awesome stuff.
Can you fall in love with someone‘s voice? Because I believe I just did.

Woooo...
Some of the acting in these stock clips can be *really* distracting, but this is otherwise really good at communicating information :)
It’s probably somewhat intentional. A way to ease the tension (I guess?). The channel doesn’t typically cover topic this serious, so dunking viewers used to the quirky, animated edu-tainment/comedy videos into a serious conversation about abuse, trauma and mental health probably isn’t the best idea. Not sure I completely agree the decision was appropriate, but I guess I see the logic. Or I’m just way off on my interpretation of the situation.
He talks about his reasoning for the approach in the pinned comment. It's interesting, to say the least. Not sure what I think of it.
Thanks for the book recommendations :D! 📚
Excellent stock footage dude!
listen i really enjoyed this video and the topic was fascinating but, even as someone who does not have ptsd, that first minute was challenging to listen to. Reading what you have to say about trigger warnings and backing it up with evidence is great bc i can accept your point of view as very separate from how many people might dismiss trigger warnings however, it still dismisses trigger warnings. I love your videos and as an academic channel i trust you to educate yourself and the people around you but the lack of trigger warnings (for me) feels like i won't have the stable footing im used to having when watching videos like these.
this isnt a peer reviewed study, all i have is my experience, but i hope in the future you might create a space for people like me on your channel. thanks for your time as always
I love your channel! Please keep making videos. If nothing else, they are slightly helpful to me, here :)
I love you, my parents will eventually run into this and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
really like this episode, very well made :)
Oh I do NOT regret turning on the bell for this channel
Hey man I really liked this new type of video, I think it’d be cool to make more introspective videos like these
I forgot about this channel existing in my sub feed NGL XD
Just the book recommendations at the end was helpful. Thanks!
Thank you. You are slightfully helpful to somebody somewhere.
Peeing isn’t a “submissive gesture” - it’s your digestive system taking a backseat while your body prepares for stress
that’s true! but they said it can appear as a submissive gesture, as in to the person/whatever causing you to piss yourself
I guess the body called shotgun on the wrong day
Technically excretory system, as the digestive system is specifically concerned with solid and semisolid waste. Whereas the excretory system is concerned with things like blood filtration and excreting the resulting fluids. (The intestines and anus are not part of the excretory system, but the kidneys are)
Either way, you're right, it is preparation to flee as a result of stress, I'm not sure where the comment that it's in any way submissive is coming from, though I will acknowledge the possibility as my knowledge is more focused on the fawn and freeze parts of the fight/flight/fawn/freeze response than the flight one
HE'S BACK
Hey, your video is really nice
6:18 yes, I too like to listen to music in reverse
I like your no effort november style and also see what you're saying about the silly stock footage and the jokes about it being better than a trigger warning, but please don't overuse the format, you 'old' style is what really sets your videos apart from others (in a very positive way). Still enjoyed this though and I appreciate the sources being in the description instead of going 100% mainstream content.
I missed your videos!!
thanks!
thank you so much for this video. i feel a little less crazy today
Thank you, it was a very interesting video!
What an awesome video!
thanks!
I found this video helpful!
This video was helpful
and i shall share it with others
Holy fuck you're back yes I'm so happy thank you
these stock videos are next level
Slightly helpful to me here. 😁🤙
ALERT!
THE CHANNEL ISNT DEAD
THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT IT WAS DEAD, THE GAP BETWEEN THIS VIDEO AND THE PREVIOUS ONE WAS COMPARATIVELY SMALL FOR THIS CHANNEL. IT WOULD'VE TAKEN YOU THREE SECONDS TO FIND THAT OUT.
Something seemed weird and I couldn't put my finger on it. Halfway through, I realised it was the stock footage. Where have your animations gone? I really missed it and it really made your videos way more entertaining to watch
It did help. Thank you.
Woman @4:57 has the greatest reaction of all time
Yes! Great acting, very realistic.
The Boy Who Was Raised As a Dog (the book Amber’s story is from) by Bruce D Perry is a great book - highly recommended!
I mean no pressure when I make these suggestions, life is difficult, especially if you're studying full time and trying to run a UA-cam channel.. But, your style before was absolutely excellent. This current video and script prompts me to imagine certain things, but your previous style did not. It contained absolutely everything visual I felt I needed to see for any auditorial queue your script prompted.
I do not want to dissuade you at all, quite the opposite in fact! I, like many people I see in the comments section, subscribed to you a long time ago. Your style of communication was absolutely astounding. Given your number of subscribers, you probably did it all by yourself, which is even more incredible.
Whatever your life journey takes you on, please at least know you have the skill to make a career out of science communication on UA-cam. Your videos were substantially well illustrated for their time 5 years ago.
you mean the use of animations?
For this video I ended up going for stock footage because:
1. the nature of the content wasn't necessarily aided by animation (and animation is expensive)
2. it became more acceptable to not directly show what I was describing to avoid potential triggers for people
@@ThisPlaceChannel Trust me when I say I understand the absolute pain in the ass grind of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe After Effects. I know how painful self made animations are compared to stock footage, I really, really do. After doing it myself I know how tempting it can be to use stock footage.
My criticism is not meant to be a complaint at all, do not take it that way, please! After doing the whole vector graphics and animation routine myself, I know how painful it is.
But your previous style, however you did it, was absolutely pristine. I felt in some places of this video your style was absent. The stock footage just didn't fill it in. For example, in your video about hypothesise and reality, you use chalkboard drawings to represent abstract ideas, but more realistic drawings to reflect reality. That absolutely perfectly suits the narrative of the clip.
I've followed your videos for the last 5 or so years. Compared to the quality of UA-cam back then, you were an absolute professional. I don't want to dissuade you from making more videos, even if they follow this current style. As a PhD graduate, I really appreciate the scientific style and critical thinking in your videos. Your previous animation style was just so perfectly tunned, I am only judging this video based on the standard you yourself set.
6:16 - Wrong side.. Not sure why that bothers me so much. Not enough to traumatize me though.
p.s. Glad you're still making videos, stay safe!
Wrong side what?

Rofl, is there anything stock video doesn't have these days? Anyways, great video!
Oh, huh, that one channel I subscribed to several years ago
I'm traumatized by the guy's extremely creepy smiling stare at 4:44.
I don't remember subscribing but I don't regret it
But when the world needed him most, he came back.
Your own body can do wacky things. Also ptsd sucks bane.
hey, theres a comment that says this already and you mentioned it in the description but i really wouldve appreciated a trigger warning.
i mean if studies show otherwise thats fair but please take this into account as one piece of data against that hypothesis, personally its pretty brutal to not have warning or the choice to avoid it/brace.
Is it possible that a generic trigger warning will dissuade people who wouldnt have avoided the specific topic topic from watching the video, and a more specific warning could have roughly the same effect on people who hear the very beginning of what the video is about anyway?
4:43 Omg that face when he talks about pissing yourself
Swell
I know from my field - emergency services, in my case dispatch/911, vicarious ptsd is very legit.
I really like your unlimited stock subscription. Also, TRAUAMA 2:38 (seems to be a mix of trauma and Futurama)
stupid after effects spell check didn't work...
or user error
I can picture you typing in something akin to "problem child" and you got that little girl poking her tongue out with a ridiculous frown and thought, yeah good enough ahaha
The things you say in this video are incredibly interesting
But the style of presentation made me genuinely wonder whether the mildly unfitting stock footage was satire of all the tiring education channels talking over stock footage for 10-20 minutes straight. In one instance you even see one of your clips looping shortly before it cuts away.
Usually the way you present stuff has so much effort put into it and that was always lovely to see. It is what set your channel apart from others. In a good way.
He's said in other comments that his usual style didn't fit the subject matter, and I agree. Animating anything from the first few minutes of the video would have not been a good idea.
I saw the statistic that PTSD means over 9 times the chance of illicit drug use under 14. Boy am I sooo lucky. Although I do fall under many of the other statistics that arent related to drugs... And another thing I noticed is that almost all of my disorders except for my hypomania were attributed to PTSD, which is kinda crazy to me.
For those considering therapy, keep in mind that therapy is all about fit, and that you should try maybe 3 or so therapist before you decide if therapy isn’t for you. Many people go to one therapist and decide it just isn’t for them, when in fact different therapists have different styles.
Please include a trigger warning because a study in a classroom about not wanting to separate yourself from the group is far different from one single person deciding not to watch a video.
I appreciate the kittens
Do you ever harbor any ambition of beinh a full time youtuber or scheduled upload? Glad to see you are not dead.
Hey thanks, I like being alive as well
I would love to do this full time

Neat and interesting... also horrifying.

That is a good way to go!
I miss the animations...
