Kind of, instead of making them trasnparent, you're bluring them, giving them a gradient of colour and transparency at the same time, that, combined with a bright opaque center, leads to a neon effect.
Check out “ Pixel Overload “ channel for Aesprite/pixel art tutorials… he doesn’t have many videos but they are some of the absolute best you can find. 😎
Nice! I was gonna put my glows in engine but I feel like this would be a much better option(when possible) performance wise. I'm kinda new to game development so maybe I'm wrong...gonna try it anyways :)
Unless the glowing is going to change throughout the game, it's better to do it this way, yes. If you check out, my last game, Shotgun Billie (warsvault.itch.io/shotgun-billie-demo), you can see that the heat glow from his legs changes a lot throughout gameplay, so, in that game, the glow was done in-engine. I'm glad the tutorial was helpful!
@@WarsVault that's pretty much what I was thinking when I said "when possible". This was the first video I seen of yours so I will definitely check that game out. I've only been teaching myself this stuff for a month or two. And I've had to learn the art side of things as much as the technical stuff. It's so interesting learning these things. So much to learn. I appreciate your advice. I haven't exactly started making a "game". Alot of practicing art and trial and error on how to develop things.
@@wessredd7237 We all gotta start somewhere. Brackeys has some nice tutorials on how to get a neon-like effect in-engine in unity. If you don't have much programming experience, you could try using Construct 2 or 3, to get a good feel on game and level design, mechanics and such, before diving in to coding, trying to learn both at the same time is possible, but quite difficult, I wish you the best of luck. Feel free to reach out to me on twitter if you ever need tips or anything of the like.
hey hey i know a better thing listen to me just duplicate the layer set it's blend mode to add and if you want more glow duplicate it again and then add blur
Unfortunately, I don't exactly plan on doing more videos like this, unless there is something that people want to see how it's done; I created this more to teach something that I couldn't find when I started out. I'm glad you enjoyed it tho!
This is a very useful tutorial! Though it was kinda difficult to imitate in the app I use on android, kinda sucks that aseprite isn't available on android Also I wanna ask, do u have a tutorial for a normal glow, like from fire or a torch, and a flashlight? (The thing I struggle with the most is light effects lol)
Thank you! Yeah, replicating the effect without any kind of blur effect is possible but very difficult. I do not have a tutorial for that specifically, but I'll keep it in mind for the future.
When I apply the blur to the flash layer, it can't be seen through layer 3. Merging down would just result in however layer 3 looks, any suggestions for this? Please and thank you!
I see, when looking at the convolution matrix window, where you select the blur, make sure the box on the right side, above the preview checkbox, is set to "Selected" and not "All", else, it will apply the blur to everything.
That's weird, I suggest you follow the tutorial again closely, as inverting colours is only achievable by using the negative setting in the convolution matrix menu (F9), which is something that does not happen in the tutorial. Also, make sure you have "Selected' instead of "All" in the convolution matrix menu, to make sure you're only changing the current layer. Good luck!
The layer stacking is a bit weird to understand at first, but, think of it like having two of the same sprite, but, the back one is darker and blurred.
Haha. The techniques used in the tutorial are pretty common stuff, so, hopefully, any pixel art software should be able to achieve the effect, even if by different means. In the case that the program you're using doesn't have a way to blur, you can do it manualy by drawing borders around your sprite and said borders in decreasing transparency, it will be a little more work than a normal blur tool, but it will achieve the exact same thing. Hopefully you can find a way!
@@McGoomba So, what you do is, you ignore the part about the second layer in the tutorial and simply create the "Flash" layer with the shape blurred and then put that layer behind the layer in which the shaded object resides. So the blurred glow will spill out of the sides by being behind the shaded object.
soon i'll finally be able to use aseprite and rewatch this tutorial, btw nice tutorial it was quite simple and straight to the point
Thank you! I hope you enjoy using Aseprite as much as I do.
Wow thanks for sharing dude, this is awesome! 👏
I had no idea this was possible 🥳
No problem! I'm glad you enjoyed!
Thank you! Worked great
Nice! I'm glad!
Wow. I had no idea this was even possible. Thanks.
Glad to have been of help!
Very nice. Thank you 😀
No problem!
just getting into pixel art this helped alot
Thank you, good luck on your journey!
You are very good at teaching!
Thank you very much! I'm glad to be of help
basically, just place pixels and make them transparent if you want to have a neon effect.
Kind of, instead of making them trasnparent, you're bluring them, giving them a gradient of colour and transparency at the same time, that, combined with a bright opaque center, leads to a neon effect.
Amazing stuff, earned a sub

Great video!

Can I do that on Libre Sprite???
I can't say for sure, but, as Libresprite is an older version of Aseprite, it might work.
@@WarsVault alright, I'll see what I can do there, have a good one

Better put, the blur doesn't seem to go outside the lines of the object for me
@@chillwithmoose Hm, if the blur doesn't go outside the lines, it could be that there is a selection, make sure nothing is selected when you blur.
@@WarsVault That fixed it, you got a sub for sure bud!
@@chillwithmoose I'm glad it worked out!
I had a problem at first, it turns out you need RGB color mode for this

I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but when I use the blur effect it blurs the entire drawing as in all the layers
