      You should go there, some of them are hard, but there are a lot of malnourished 5'4" dudes just trying to survive off of whatever they can get from tourists. Great place to vacation if you don't let them talk you into paying way to much for bullshit. Go to Chiang Mai if you want reasonable bartering; there are a lot of old women who will overcharge like a motherfucker for basic shit you can get anywhere. This is great honestly. Violent tendencies don't just go away, so why not channel that violence into something more productive? Martial arts takes discipline, and discipline is a key factor in controlling impulsive violence. Its a win win for the inmates and the prison really if you think about it, the prison makes money, and the prisoners learn curve their violent tendencies and become an accepted part of society again. Bravo if you ask me.

      Not really. It teaches discipline, that is one of the key principles of martial arts. Hardly anyone who is trained in martial arts uses it unless they absolutely have too. The values it carries with it are too strong.

      @@tunod- people are not just violent by nature in the sense that they commit crimes for fun. Material conditions play a big role in these things so bettering their focus on something positive will help a lot. You can see this clearly: prison systems focussed on punishment leads to many more repeaters of crime than prisons focussed on rehabilitation.

    I lived in Thailand as a teacher doing ABC with Thai kids for a job.
    They take muai Thai really seriously and why not?
    Its far from barbaric. They are lovely people and muai thai is so much more civilised and respectful than western boxing.
    They kick the shit out of each other but its just sport. If you see how Thai fighters respect anyone who gets into the ring with them because they know that it takes courage and accepting pain for a sport.
    The thais are genuinely nice people even muai thai fighters.

      @Lord Voldemort not denying that. But more deaths have come about from boxing than any derivative of mixed martial art.

    • @TY-gh2yf
      @TY-gh2yf 5 років тому

      @Lord Voldemort its about 7 deaths from mma since 2001 and that includes unsanctioned. Compared to a tonne from boxing. Joe rogan spoke about it (I know that's not gospel) but good points were raised. It's smaller gloves and the hits are not in the same place and less volume. I just wiki'd it but that's all sourced about.

    • @BatziiGaming
      @BatziiGaming 5 років тому +10

      Seriously? You want to say its so much more "respectful" than boxing? That in itself, being that you were a teacher, is disrespectful. As a boxer, the sport is very respectful, we train hard at my gym, 3 hours a day 6 days a week. Sparring almost every day, lots of focus on footwork, proper striking form, theres always something to correct. and @Lord Voldemort they each have their places in skill. A Muay Thai fighter cannot outstrike a Boxer, a Boxer cannot beat a Muay Thai fighter in Muay Thai. One of our biggest rules is to not compare yourself to anyone else, so I dont understand why to try and compare the sports? That goes against the respect that martial arts is supposed to instill in you. Just show your respects for Muay Thai, no need to bring in and downplay Boxing.

    I've been doing Martial Arts as a 50+ year old man for 3 years. This summer, I took some Muay Thai lessons and mostly I use it as cardio on a heavy bag and to break up monotony of Taekwondo Poomsae. Anyone that thinks Martial Arts will make someone more violent is mistaken. Martial Arts makes an individual into a more disciplined person, and all forms stress the defensive nature of the Art of Self-Defense. Muay Thai, on the other hand, is competition based, and they are some of the most well-conditioned and disciplined people I have ever met.

    All of you people criticising the idea of training the inmates in Muay Thai have obviously never entered any kind of martial art. MT, boxing etc will not encourage short tempers or aggressive attitudes - the opposite is true. These disciplines are exactly that: disciplines. They encourage self control. Anger is essentially 'unlearned' as it is the most counter-productive attitude. These people will emerge as physically and mentally stronger, healthier - not more violent. The only truly damaging thing here is the failed social experiment that is the prison system.

      Blah b I beg to differ , This is Thailand's national sport they learn this from a young age. They are just a portion of the population but majority of the fighters are not in prison. Its like saying weight lifting makes prisoners violent in other prisons. They already are trained from a young age the way europeans or latin americans play football.

    • @Noowbie1
      @Noowbie1 11 років тому

      Blah b No criminals train like a para-military they don't really compete in fighting sports. Anyone can learn to box or kickbox its the same way they can be trained to drive cars or shoot guns. Fighting is a small part of the criminal problem so small its not even a issue. Your point has very little weight, these guys aren't in prison because they were fighting they're just like a football player who goes to prison but still has the skill that got him there. No link from any data around the world shows organized crime and combat sports.More data shows people joining the military or one or two members getting training and then training multiple others in the same way. It has nothing to do with organized fighting as a whole .

    This prison fight program is brilliant.
    this rehabilitation experiment makes the most sense. refocusing the violent nature of the incarcerated and actually giving them an outlet to BE something. People in prisons have one enormous advantage when it comes to any sport... They have more time than they'll ever need to rigorously practice, with no entertainment or work obligations to distract them. Prisoners seem to have a sense of drive that surpasses just about any person living in freedom.

  • @KenjoLuma
    @KenjoLuma 10 років тому +72

    I think this is a brilliant idea. Those who are in prison are already proven to be violent. Why don't we allow them to become a professional boxer, institutionalising their violence in a more controlled way, while the society takes pride in having such talented, motivated athletes in the national team.

      You just spoke my mind, Onuke. Banawoski, its not like criminals fight fair anyway, using guns and knives etc. At least if you teach them how to relieve stress properly, they may stray from their criminal past and pursue a career or hobby in this. Criminals (murderers more specifically) dont need to know how to fight, because they dont fight, they'll just kill you if they really wanted to.

    I loved to know about this prison policy,it really gives the prisoners something positive to do and to think about,while staying in shape by doing a very exhausting sport (like all fight sports are) and at the same time boosts the country's reputation on an international level because their national fighters can get a chance to be on the spot light.
    Much respect to all Thailand's Muay Thai prison fighters from a Portuguese downhiller immigrant in Holland.

      Thai's speak ok English for the most part, but that's not the case if you're in a small town/village. Lived here for seven years and the majority of people here speak some English. Depends on what region and how big the town is, but it seems like even when I speak Thai with a stranger, they'll speak English back. I live in a smaller town though, so I think they do so they get a chance to speak and practice their English more than anything. Where I live, I hardly ever see a farang.

      Indianpvp MajorPvp I got the impression that Muay Thai was a very big cultural thing, everyone I've met that are from thailand trains Muay Thai and they have said that almost everone does it in thailand. But of course assumptions and "rules" doesn't always apply.

      dgwear69 Fighting sports in general, gives people mental focus, discipline, honor, etc. Fighting someone in the ring will almost always brings out mutual respect afterward, even in street fights. Mike Tyson said if it wasn't for Cus D'Amato and Boxing, his life would have been in and out of prison as he started out as a troubled child.

      That mentality is the reason why when a prisoner gets released they are 90%% more likely to go back. They are treated like animals and trash in prison. Its suppose to be a rehabilitation processes. They are suppose to be able to go back into to society as a rehabilitated person. But because they are marked so badly they can only do things they know which is crime. Give them a semblance of normalism a chance to see that they can make up for their wrong doings by living a honest and good life. Most of these guys are never going to see the outside world ever again. At the very least treat them like humans and give them something to ease their minds.
