Singer's original intent was to produce a limited number of machines in 1951 with the Centennial badge. However, these machines sold so quickly that they decided to produce another batch. Sales went through the roof, Singer had unintentionally created a craze. It was all nice until they realized that customers wouldn't buy sewing machines without the badge 0.0 (Go figure). So they sent additional badges to Singer Sewing Centers with the instruction to install them on any sewing machines that had the standard gold badge. They even dusted off their leftover machines from 1947-1950 and installed badges on them, that's why you can find pre-1951 machines with the badge. It all ended in late '51 or early '52 when Singer felt customers wouldn't buy machines with the now "old" badge.

Singers were well made and they were proud of that. Today nothing works that's why we all want a vintage machine. Almost everything old is better except my knees...lol

The shuttle is used for the interlacement of warp & weft yarns in creating fabric on a loom. So on the badges the shuttle represents fabric that will be sewn into clothing which is represented by the needles & thread passing through the shuttle.

    WOW!
I have collected Vintage Singer's for many years and have NEVER seen
anyone do this type of research on 'Logo's". Very important for Singer
history to document these kinds of things and because you did this,
I now have discovered that I have a Centennial 15-91 and no doubt
would have never known had you not made this video!
    Thank you!

Back when these were made this was an important purchase for any family. Singer knew this and wanted the machines to be fancy for that time. A lot of machines were set in the Front room or the Parlor, so it was like on display.

Singer Models 127 and 128 (probably others) have the 'vibrating shuttle' that sweeps back and forth. Easy to identify if there are two long bobbin slide doors crosswise of the machine bed. The outer ring of dots and lines on those badges is a graphic representation of a finish sewn stitch.

There are two words for clarification that would help you. Deboss and Emboss. debossing is stamping to raise a pattern, and embossing is stamping to lower a design. The older logos are debossed, and the newer were embossed. Hope that helps.

The shuttle is a depiction of the Standard shuttle and transverse shuttle, not the vibrating shuttle. The VS shuttle is closed on the number 8227 and 8327, but the number 48 1/2 TS shuttle has an open face showing the bobbin as depicted. The ts shuttle goes with the Singer 12 and New Family, and that machine had an even larger logo and more oval. The Singer Improved letter A and the letter A had painted on logo of similar design. The first one you showed started showing up in 1879 on the Singer Improved Family machine. With the "commemorative" badges, it has a tradition. Singer's start was the 1851 "great exhibition" and put them on the map worldwide. They had a large area in the "crystal palace" and sold many machines right on the spot. You are spot on about the centennial badge, heard of many problems as you described. (edit) i forgot about the Standard shuttle, similar to the TS that moves from front to back in a line is similar to the TS and it found on the Singer 1,2,3 machines, the Singer number one being the first machine produced and sold in 1851. I can provide examples of the shuttles or logos depicted or described as mentioned above from my collection. Second edit : the singer logo shown firstly in the video was trademark #2651 and was registered June 5, 1875. (elongated type) and then shortened in 1879 to the one shown.

Can you talk about badges Singer gave to other companies that put their brand on their sewing machine? I have a 1898 Sears Roebuck & Co. treadle machine. I know very little about it. It was named Home Queen. It is in very good condition and my late aunt fine tuned it and it sees nice. She learned to sew on a treadle when she was young in PR. The iron is nice looking and you can still see the gold lettering. The other thing I learned was this machine was modeled after one of the Minnesota machines. They are many branded sewing machines out there that are not talked about. I even found a similar model advertisement in a vintage Sears catalog.

Teri Adams, the vintage Singers were made before "planned obsolescence" became standard for manufacturers. Many products today are designed to wear out or break without being repairable, or so that buying a new one is cheaper than fixing the old one.

Cool badges, just picked up a 201-2 with a centennial badge and then a 101 appeared on craigslist that I purchased for a very small amount (needs a lot of work). Then I noticed it's badge was "Texas centennial exposition" 1936. It was manufactured in 1931, a good find with potential. Having fun restoring them and finding deserving homes where they are appreciated.I just love the pre-CNC precision of these machines.

Thats a good idea cam. I have not thought to compare the two but not a bad idea. When COVID clears, I hope to get access to another 201 and if I have a 15 to compare it to, that would be a fun video to make given that the 2 models, though they share the lovely black paint scheme, are actually very different in how they were engineered and how they operate.

I have my Grandma's Tan 221 which of course has that Red S emblem. I used automotive polish Meguiare's #9 to polish all my badges on every machine, I don't have any of the special badges other than the tan (from the early years) it cleaned them all up beautifully. I have a 403A, 185J, black 221, tan 221, (2) 301's, 201-2 They are beautiful. I also found my Tans ring is brown, not black after I got all the grime off of it. They also continued using the longer metal badges on the 400 and 500 models as well and may have for other models I just don't have any so none come to mind.

I've got a model 66 (serial AJ849898) with the crinkle paint and a "3D" style century badge and never knew it was anything out of the ordinary (well, one of ~30,000 made in August 1950, lol) Now I just need to find someone that can change belts, oil it, etc. How do you get a reasonable appraisal?

I have issue with all the old ladies and gals that wrapped (rags) stuff around the neck of the machine like that and then proceeded to stick pins in it like it was some form of voodoo doll. You scratch the crap out of these machines that way, geez, what was the matter with yeah?>

    • @VintageSewingMachineGarage
      @VintageSewingMachineGarage  4 роки тому

I share your frustration with that old habit JP. My only theory is that many of the original owners sewed for many hours on lots of sewing projects. This would have been a short cut to helping always have pins within easy reach. Of course, they had access to stuffed pin cushions, but this is why I think they did this. But you are correct about how pins can scratch the old painted surfaces. This makes me question the machines that don't have this "rash". Perhaps their owners were more careful or its also possible that they did not enjoy sewing and avoided it when they could. Or perhaps they had the finances to purchase more "Store Bought" clothes which was a lot more costly.

Hi David. Most Singer machines have their serial numbers easily located. But the model numbers are not always listed for the machine. You can find your model number by using the serial number by doing a search under , "Singer serial number ISMACS". That site has lots of info. and when you find your serial number, check the columns on the table where your serial number is and it will have the model number, year of production.
