Thank you and have a blessed day!
I cannot thank you enough for taking the time and effort to create and share this. I am planning on doing this to a machine I picked up recently. Your video will be my guide through the process.
His shop is very helpful. I was able to download a Singer 15-91 Parts catalog so that I knew what to order from him to overhaul and upcoming repair job for a Singer 15-91 Sewing Machine I purchased for heavy duty shop mesh, and canvas tarpprojects
Yesterday I bought three 15-91s so I could restore them and give one to my wife and two to my siblings. One of the machines have exact same problem as shown in the video. I had some doubts but after watching this video I'm crystal clear as to how to rewire potted motor. Great video. Thank you!!
You are very welcome! Thank you!
Thank you. Great tutorial.
My pedal cord runs through a cabinet. Smooth on both sides and is a medal pedal that sticks out of the cabinet and a small motor in the cabinet. So glad I found this. Started rewiring the lamp and the pedal then stopped as I got nervous about hooking them back up correctly to the red, black and yellow prongs.
This is why I take off the old motors and attach a vintage Singer hand crank. (On spoked hand wheels. I wouldn't ever want to crap myself! 😂)
I found a 15-91 in a nice cabinet today. Can't wait to get to restoring her so she can make generations more clothing and quilts
Thanks for a great explanation...my machine would still run when I was winding a bobbin. Great help.
I am looking to rewire a Singer model 15 from January of 1946, so this video was definitely cool to see. The idea of doing this wrong terrifies me since the machine is so old, so I will probably have a professional do this, but it is good to see the process either way. Thank you for the video! 🤗
Thank you SO MUCH. Discovered some exposed wire on the leads of my old button pedal. I really don't want to get rid of the knee pedal function, so this is perfect.
Does it matter which of two leads from each component (motor, light, pedal) you attach to each pin? Obviously I know one of each has to go to a specific pin, but on my old machine, I can't tell which lead is which color anymore. Hopefully that question makes sense. Thanks!
Oh wow. This has turned out to be more complicated than I thought! I might wanna have a professional like you restore mine.
I couldn't finish, does he at any point actually SHOW it being rewired?
What a complicated subject to discuss. I've tried to summarize it in text as follows. Hopefully I got it right.
There are 4 pairs of wires to be considered, for a total of 8 wires;
two wires for the plug,
two wires for the light,
two wires for the controller, and
two wires for the motor.
These 8 wires are distributed between three terminals, usually identified as 1(YELLOW), 2(BLACK), and 3(RED).
Power originates from the hot side of a polarized plug (the narrow blade) and continues along the smooth walled wire. This electricity flows (hot) until work is done at the light or at the motor, and then it flows to neutral to leave the system via the wide blade of the plug.
The 8 wires are distributed across the 3 terminals as follows:
1(YELLOW) has to accommodate 3 wires
hot in from plug
hot out to controller
hot out to light switch
2(BLACK) has to accommodate 2 wires
hot in from controller
hot out to motor
3(RED) has to accommodate 3 wires
neutral coming from light
neutral coming from motor
neutral flowing out to plug
In the case of the controller, since it is a switch, it will be hot in and hot out. Both wires are considered hot even if one is smooth walled, and one is ribbed.
Wow this is great in most cases I can save the original wires ,as you said the wire was still good it was the compromised insulation .I am so glad that i found this video. Many Thanks
your very welcome.
Could you just slip shrink tube over the old insulation.? To hold the the fitting for repair some masking tape or an elastic band would apply pressure. Very interesting video thanks
You are very welcome!
You might be able to but I don't recommend it. the old insulation can become very hard and brittle and possibly tear the shrink tube.
Also if you do not have good connections then they can ark which causes extreme heat and is a fire hazard.
Great video. Thank you! Looking for the link to the adjusters manual and can't seem to find it.
Can u use regular alcohol on that or no
Hi, I wonder if you could help me please, I am trying to rewire a Singer 457 but before I can, I have to work out how it is working because I can't find any internal wiring diagrams showing how they work, from what I can work out the internal motor is insulated from the machine using Nylon components and has one side permanent live and the other side seems to be variable neutral through the foot switch, also the capacitor is across the motor terminals, would you agree with this ?
I am totally new to sweing machine. Recently I bought 15-91 singer from yard sale. It has potted moter in working condition. It does not have footpaddele . There is one wire with two prong plug for motor. If I plug in the motor & machine continuously moving. I have a footpaddele from another machine but don't know how to connect footpaddele and motor. There is another wire with two prong plug for the light. How to connect footpaddele to control motor? Thanks for your help.
I have a 1925 Franklin Rotary sewing machine, it has an old round plug with 3 prongs and 3 wires coming out of the motor. I want to change it to a standard two prong polarized plug, but I am confused because there are three wires and the insulation is all worn and cracked. The wiring is old school from the 1920's and I cannot tell the hot from the neutral. Any help would be appreciated, Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
There are no links in the description of this video?
How do I get the service manual with wiring diagram? Thanks for your help.
I got a vintage protea deluxe zigzag and the wires got loose in the powerplug dont know how to put it back
It is more complicated than I thought, but I’m going for it! I was combining two broken ones to make one good one, but now I realize all new wire is best. What new wire do you like to purchase as replacement?
I'm trying with beautiful black landscape-duty wire that looks to be a good match but the 14 wire is too thick for the plug connector. I'm going to try a soldered curl with half the threads. Is that safe or should I find 16?
I did eventually get the landscape wire to work but it was a pain. 18 would probably be much easier, but then I have this propensity to overbuild. If I could have found 16 that would look right, I would try that next time.
Question 🙋🏻♀️ you know how you said that some people might have pulled out the oil cotton in the bobbin well. If “someone “
Has done that before realizing what it was. Can you just put some qtip cotton back in that hole 🕳 to replace that ❓❓❓🫣🫣🫣
Cotton is not the best thing to uses as the fibers easily come apart and can and possibly cause problems.
I would suggest using the proper size oil wick for it.

What are your thoughts regarding solid vs stranded wire?
Solid wise is less flexible, and would be more difficult to use inside the motor and light, stranded wire is very flexible.
So for as carrying electricity, they both do fine. I personally would not use solid on a machine, but it is great for house wiring.
I have a 14-91 that starts up immediately upon being plugged in. Bypassing the pedal. I've sorted that the pedal is not the issue. It seems that machine is going straight to ground. Any ideas?
It sounds like it is improperly wired.
Is the foot pedal wired in the power cord or into the back of the plug on the machine?
I got a rotary Eldredge loire, and the cords are in bad shape .It's a whole piece, meaning the engine is covered in a metal cast .I removed the flywheel, but it seems that I can't get it out of the case .Please help me.
I have repaired a couple of machines with similar motor set ups. I believe there is a screw on the inside that has to be loosened or removed.
I'm not seeing link to a manual
what gauge of wire?
I think I will need someone who knows what they're doing to rewire the sewing machine. Thanks for letting me know.
Thumbs up for 480
What a lengthy, rambling confused presentation, when all that is needed is a diagram of the three connection terminal.
Sometimes this is needed for people that don’t understand electrical. I’ve worked around it a lot, and he makes a good point that I had never heard about those wire nuts not being used for things that are moved.
