Knizia mentioned in a podcast interview last week that Ra the Dice Game had in fact been picked up for a second edition and it would include a new solo mode as well.
“Roy, button. We’re good.” Favorite moment of the video!
I love the old fantasy look of Lords of Waterdeep 😅
Agreed. That was the pick I disagreed with the most. It looks awesome. Sure, aspects of the game could be improved, but that cover is so cool.
Me too. I think the game looks great as is.
I do agree that they should fix the vertical vs horizontal text on the cards though.
Yep, it's impeccable except for the cubes. Shaped meeples elevate it to perfection.
When I first read a rulebook that instructed to “tap” a card, literally tapped it. 😂
" 'Activate card mode!' ....it didn't do anything."
It is a dumb word (and I'm a big MTG fan), they should have said "turn it" or "tilt it" instead haha. I understand the concept of tapping something for power/resources, but I think they could have been more wise to the cardboard card context haha.
Whats funny? When i first read “draw a card” I literally took a pencil and draw a picture, “discard a card” I literally put the card in the bin. In Poker when people told me to burn a card, I took a torch and burned it to ashes… 🤷♂️
Since Tom wasn't there, I'll say it for him...
Magical Athlete!
He may get it too. CMYK plans to publish a new edition in 2025.
For Thebes we always play with a simple variant. Each time after someone searches they return all but 1 sand tile back. This slowly reduces the sand just enough to maintain the difficulty and 'luck factor' but then lowers the amount of frustration. It just creates a little more balance to the risk/reward experience.
SUGGESTION: Do a top 10 games that need a big box version
That hockey game gave me a new idea for a new top 10: 10 most unique/rare games in the dice tower library
We have some games listed out that we include in the library catalog book we print out at conventions. Would be cool if Tom showed some of them off!
Horrified original was a hit for me. I could never justify buying a whole separate game to just get some additional monsters I was interested in.
This is one of the few examples where I went into the BGG files section and found some homebrew monsters to add to my box. Ideally, the publisher should be doing this, but I've decided the fan made monsters like The Hunchback and Jeckyl & Hyde are good enough to scratch that itch.
This was such a great list idea. So often people's favourite games are recycled in these top 10s, but a good number of these were games I hadn't even heard of. That All-Star Draft game sounded so awesome and I don't even like hockey. But I'd totally love to see it reworked as a baseball game!
I love the "when the cat's away..." intro energy. Wonder if Tom sees these later on and is like "Whenever I skip out on a video you guys go wild"
This was a great list. There were so many titles that don't get mentioned regularly. I really hope some publishers are watching and can make something happen!
Northern Pacific looks like it was made for an IBM or Tandy home computer system 😉
I tend to agree with what Camilla said about Horrified. They need to make it modular.
It IS modular! You can swap characters and monsters. How can you even think of mixing up all the different themes? No. No. NO.
I love killing monsters but I am not happy with the new versions of horrified. Maybe they could do a less complex version of Eldridge horror but with just killing monsters.
The only modular I could agree to would be additional add on monsters for particular editions. Mixing themes would be a hot mess.
My #1 game for a new edition is Mayfair Games: Dragonriders of Pern (1983). I love the IP and would enjoy a modern update.👍
Pernspan: the breeding and hatching of Dragon eggs
An Awaken Realms version of Lords of Waterdeep would be amazing!
My game group has tweaked the "too much sand" in Thebes by cutting how much you return to the bag by as much as half. One time we tied the returned sand to the number of relics discovered, but that got pretty (BG)Geeky.
That was fun! Thanks everybody!
Stars of Akarios HAS a reprint. They funded and will be coming out soon.
Wow we really didn’t have the same problem with. Monsters on Board. We got the deluxe but not the upgraded cars. Cardboard ones were fine. It’s not like you even need to use them.
The only very minor gripe I had was the track you move along could have been 10% bigger for less crowding, but it really wasn’t a big deal.
Many years ago my BGG Secret Santa sent me a copy of Ra: The Dice Game and I was just the most delighted. Get that game in print with some great artwork and I'll buy yet another copy.
Love the new music (for the numbers)!
That intro was great!!
Wow, I seldomly saw a more obscure Top 10 list! Not that that's bad, I like hearing about new-to-me games :D
Wonderful, fun list.
Have and LOVE castaways. Need to get it to the table soon. It has been a while.
I found it funny that the first couple of games of the list they're saying "I wish this game had a little more meat" or something similar. And when they got to Red Rising (the game that was based on a simpler game that added a little more), and they were saying it didn't need all this extra stuff. Sometimes a game doesn't need "a little more" because it is good for what it is, and that's why you like it.
It's not that I want them to take out Red Rising's extra stuff. My complaint is that it's particular extra stuff on the board wasn't interesting and almost always equaled out. -Chris
Lots of great picks here. The first that came to mind for me is another Fantasy Flight game called Android. I really enjoyed the game when I owned it, but the mechanisms could be cleaned up. It would have hit the table more had it been shorter and/or more intuitive.
Great video!
I vote for Nations ;). New art + 5 times smaller box.
I (Chris) almost put Nations the Dice Game. I love that one, but my biggest thought was it just needs a graphical update, so I wanted to highlight games that could use a bit more.
Terraforming Mars with good art and components. Imagine an Awaken Realms re-do like they did with Castles of Burgundy 😍
I would love to see new editions for some of those! If I think about Spirit Island, there are so many cool ideas which could be implemented.
Zee's list was amazing this time around. I agree with quite a few of Chris' picks as well. A lot of these games are ones I still enjoy and almost prefer over titles coming out now.
I've had XCOM for so long and really enjoy it with the right group. Would love to see an update or revised edition! Great lists.
Merchants & Marauders needs a new edition !!
You guys sure mentioned a lot of house ruling. I would love to watch a Top 10 house rules that make games better.
Loving the Third Eye shirts!
Lifeboat (Zee's number 9) does have a 2nd edition with the rulebook in color which showcases the survivors of the lifeboat on the a deserted island.
I would have loved to have had Tom in this one. Great video, regardless!
With Horrified, new maps & tokens are fun thematic ties to the monsters. I'd hate to lose that (though a big box could be nice). And I'd just love a good box for Lords of Waterdeep and a board that integrates the expansion
Concordia (art), Space Base (English text on cards), Zombie State (tweak military track), The Thing (tweak other ways to win besides radio room), No Thanks (new art/theme), Celestia (English text on the cards vs just icons).
this intro music is fantastic :D
THANK YOU!
Been in the hobby for 14 years. Never even seen Goa before.
Parfum - Zee - I had to laugh - you were in the Dice Tower video for this game. But you at least lived up to your review because you said you wouldnt remember it. And you didnt. Saying now that you have not played it ;)
What do you guys think about the new version of nightfall coming out this year?
London Dread sounds exactly like Space Alert. Maybe Zee should play it
Out of these, I agree the most with Lords of Waterdeep (would love that “essential edition”) and XCOM (played XCOM 2 a couple of years ago and loved it).
Castaways is a perfect pick. It could have used a lot of extra development even when it came out. There's a really good game in there that could be unlocked.
Good stuff!
I'd want a 2nd Ed of
1. Transamerica
2. Queen's Gambit
3. Advanced Squad Leader
4. Crimson Skies
5. Mice & Mystics
6. Centurion
7. Leviathan
My top 5 reprints are…
1. Deep vents- it’s an awesome game it’s my fifth favorite game! However because most people don’t understand the iconography, I feel they could reprint it by making the tiles bigger so they can put a little text on what the growth and trigger does, or at least add players aids. I also think they can add more tiles, so that every game has a little more variation, and instead of just one row of tiles, 2 rows would give more choices for poor players to choose from.
2. Dingos dreams- for whatever reason this game has been out of print for years.
3. Cardline animals 2- the first one was reprinted recently, so I hope the reprint the second one too.
4. Fauna- has been out of print for like a decade, although i hear there is a reprint planned.
5. Dominion alchemy- it’s surrounded by several expansions that have gotten a second edition, so it’s only fair alchemy gets a second edition.
My biggest 2 would be:
1. Abomination, which incorporates or improves the variants that have been developed over the years.
2. Hadrian's Wall which of you've played more than a few times needs some rebalancing, especially of the bonus cards. It would be great to be able to explore more of the many options and be competitive, not forced into the same ruts over and over.
I love butterfly, such a good game. I have only played it in BGA, I wish I had the actual game.
Middle-Earth Quest deserves a new edition fosho. 7 Wonder Duel, After the Virus, Memoir 44, D-Day Dice, Dead of Winter, Legendary Marvel, Roll Player Universe, Ethnos, Space Alert, Last Night on Earth, AV Ghost, Runewars, Heroes of Terrinoth, Mage Wars, Summoner Wars, Gears of War, and I could name many others I'd like to be able to get or to get improved.
Butterfly is the shiznit. Me and my friends eat this up! The "expansion pack" my friends came up with, is to play with the tiles upside-down. I like the game the way it is! But, I'd consider purchasing a revised game or one with new pieces.
They did announce Vegas Showdown.
Renegade Expands its Catalog with More Classic Strategy Games
San Diego, CA - September 28, 2023 - Renegade Game Studios announced today that they are finalizing the expansion of their licensing relationship with Hasbro, a toy and game company, with the addition of four refreshed versions to its line-up of classic strategy board games: Nexus Ops, Vegas Showdown, Risk 2210 and Risk Godstorm.
Oh man, I love Space Hulk: Death Angel! Such a great game, but man, a new edition would be excellent!
Love the topic and the video. I have to say, though, that the new music for the number animations is significantly worse almost across the board. The previous ones were enjoyable little audio clips.
I did not expect to hear "Goa" on Zee's list. I would think he would avoid it like a gray plague, let alone praise it like that.
Dorn games have a very special feel to them, even if they are sometimes dry.
Leveene (from "before you play") loves that game, and he has a pretty good taste in games. I would like to play Goa.
There's a Stars of Akarios coming soon!
My vote is for Rajas of the Ganges. Needs a bigger, less busy board and better player tableaus.
The boards are fine. I like it mainly because of the colorful game board.
Nothing at all needs to be changed in Rajas of the Ganges.
@@dreamofempire2114
Besides the boards, the markets also need to be nerfed. Other than that, great game
I love that game. And I worry that any attempt to "fix" it could nerf the factors that make it attractive to me.
I disagree, the game doesn't need any changes it's perfect as is - colourful board included. Markets are very easy to block when someone starts focusing them.
Quantum. Great game. I'd like to see a reprint, and more stuff added to it. Maybe different modes of play, and more cards.
I would love to see a new edition of Blood Bowl: Team Manager.
How about a reprint of Blue Moon City to correct the horrible color scheme choice.
Robinson Crusoe Collectors Edition really needs a second edition! Fix all the spelling, typographical and grammatical errors, make the minis (more) usable, fix the playmat, ...
Totally agree with Zee on “London dread”! The game was great until the final boss fight essentially down to a dice roll for win/lose.
My pick is Abyss: a smaller, card game version in a box that scales with the size of the actual game
Have you played Conspiracy? It is a smaller card game version of Abyss.
40:51 I always wanted to try XCOM: The Board Game but it has become fairly expensive on the secondary market. 43:19 Never played this, but I really liked Fallout Shelter: The Board Game. It's a fun little worker placement game.
I do wish Spirit Island was a bit less fiddly and just a bit simpler. It could use a little streamlining. Lets see that second edition!
Escape: Zombie City should take a page from Project: Elite so when you flip over an event then EVERYTHING stops, players and the timer, while the board is reset/tweaked and then *click* off to the races!
If the do update Lord of Waterdeep I would like them to update the box container, that half lid is a mess.
It’s the only misstep. The rest of the game is great and doesn’t need a refresh. The art in the cards is beautiful.
Citrus needs to be reprinted with the colors of the meeples matching the player boards better.
Another would be Familienbande by Leo Colovini. Just a reprint with a better score track, but leave the art alone! Its perfect!
Love the content,
Hate the replacement bumper music!
Yes, Space hulk death angel definitly needs a retheme, such a great game!
A different theme could make it more approachable, but it'd still need a theme where you thought you were doomed. Humans vs the Predator? The only aspect I didn't care for was the one hit you were dead rule so I played with rules where you might be dead you might not be, you rolled another die to determine (IIRC), which was great.
@@kq76 Actually, I think an Aliens theme would work really well. "Game over, man! Game over!"
Um... so what space/sci-fi universes does Fantasy Flight currently have rights to? Star Wars, Android, Cosmic Encounger, Twilight Imperium, Doom, Fallout Shelter and a few others.
Hmmmm... one of those ought to work.
I wish Red Rising had some “banking” mechanism so you had your hard of cards and then you slowly add cards to your score pile for scoring at the end. As it is right now you end up with a hand of cards that you have no choice but keep in hand making your choices so limited by which cards you can use it makes the game so dull for me. If you opened up new hand space over time by banking cards it would make your cards in hand more flexible and the game more interesting.
Parfum is great. There was a mini expansion that kind of helped.
Goa was technically reprinted as Diamonds Club whit is very fancy.
:) Hello ! Congrats for this video !
I want a new edition of FFG's Arkham/Middle Earth card game but re-themed to Legend of the Five Rings. Would be cool to have a group of characters from one of the clans and take them through a solo adventure defeating different cards and so on.
Failing that- maybe a new edition of Gears of War with the newer generation of characters from games 4&5
Lifeboat! Yes, please. 👍
Camilla's Dulce comments hit home. I've never played that one, but as a colorblind (common red/green) person, soooo many games make themselves unplayable for no other reason than color choices and only relying on color for differentiation. So easily avoidable
Camilla had a lot of great ideas here that seem to me could be easily implemented.
Horrified for me is the one where I'd love an expansion to the original (and obviously the best!) Universal Monsters game.
I couldn't care less for American Monsters and while I'd love a Greek mythology game, I don't want it as a Horrified game. I really don't need anything but Universal Monsters, but I would like some extra content for it. Give me extra content for that!
I'd love to see the Lords of Water Deep rethemed to The Dungeons & Dragons cartoon.
Agree with zee on space hulk death angel the card game. A better rule book is needed sooooo bad!!
Ethnos? Not just the art.... make it modular too. Smash Up! A version that keeps track of what is happening on the bases with some clarity (double sided boards with slots to move the markers...) maybe modular sides added for different factions. (Is there an app yet to keep track of the rules for different factions or just 1 huge rule book and lots of questions?)
They just redid Ethnos recently. I can’t remember the new name

If not Levi's or genetics, I wonder what Milla's initial thoughts were upon hearing Roy say "gene stealers". I might've missed it, but why did Death Angel need a second edition? It didn't sound like anything was wrong with the first edition, so was it just because it's a shame it's no longer in print? And Ra: The Dice Game needs a second ed. for the cubes to be replaced by nicer pieces? Was there something else like the original art isn't very good?
Zee, Atomic Bonds expansion is supposed to have fixed Fallout. Changed it to co-op rather than competitive. Have heard that from a few channels.
I have heard this as well so..... Make a new edition INCLUDING Atomic Bonds from the start. Fallout was a game I was supremely disappointed in. The first time I started a quest and someone else finished it on the other side of the map I realized the whole premise was a hot mess.
I'm ready to ask. After all these years. What doe Zee's jacket say?
For whatever reason, Escape Zombie City just does not sell as well as Escape: Curse of the Temple. Everyone says they like the theme on it, but they don't buy the game like they do the original.
Caesar! by Paolo Mori. Brilliant gameplay, let down by the most lacklustre art and components. Deserves more love.
How about s third edition? Mission Red Planet, but slightly less ridiculous randomness with Scientist (Yes im aware of great houserules on the internet) and hopefully the second moon so that people stop asking me why there is just one moon.
Love Lifeboat!
Y'all entitled to your opinion, but I love Parfum for what it is.
Lords of Waterdeep is a great suggestion.
Hope the new music for the Top 10 vids worked for you all!
Not really. Why does it need music? The music reminded me a bit of 80s detective TV series like Magnum or Riptide.
personally not a fan.
Yes, enjoyed this version, but then again, I enjoy most of them!
Loved it :)
I've been wondering if there is a way to get this music, either for purchase or streaming on UA-cam or something. Every new version you produce is incredible. My hat is off to you, sir.
I don't think I ever disagree more than Kamilla arguing her spirit island pick. This game is close to perfect imo to teach everything is so clean thematic and usefull. Some card are not but I really like the art.
I love the passion Camilla has. She’s great people.
I’d love to see a new edition of Triumvirate
51:13 I hate it when aliens steal my wranglers!
They did reprint stars of akarios with a 1.5 edition
