I like the character exploring romance and trauma angle but yeah its dark bt not that dark, still dark, best gurl. The shadow realm is the most fascinating creating a lovecraftian dimension of pain instead of death , is something I think the thing that resonates is, that yes we want things so love good, bt hanging to mch on something and being unable to let go when the time comes, is also a good thing. . And griefing is part of that.i think. And to think what we really want and whats important here and now. I think that regardless of belief, are things that really hit, be aware of now, really and see beyond our contructs.
I like it too but personally i found it a bit silly when the singer reached those high notes the first time i saw the opening and heard "give meeee fieeeyyaaa" nearly spat my coffee. Took me completly of guard somehow.
I think Dororo not viewing herself as a boy in the anime comes from the fact this identity was _forced_ on her. It was a necessity of war, not a natural expression of her identity. When, at the end of the show, we see Hyakkimaru whole again and Dororo growned up as a woman, and both of them happy, what we are seeing is two people getting back what war stole from them - his body and her gender identity - through their relationship and journey with eachother
I'd also like to add that I believe the reason dororo denies the fact that she's a girl in the original manga is because being a ten year old and having something like that publicly revealed when you were taught your whole life to hide it is quite traumatizing. On the other hand I'm still a bit confused as to why hyakkimaru still refers to dororo as a boy in the original manga.my only guesses are that he just feels more familiar with the "boy dororo" or that he acknowledges that dororo is still very young and needs time to grow out
Well also Japan at the time frame was not a very kind place to women. A 10 year old boy would have a significantly easier life on the road then a 10 year old girl. There's a reason her family kept it hidden
As a Buddhist I feel the need to thank you for talking about the Buddhist elements of the show, and for explaining Buddhism so well. Like I don't think I could have explained it much better myself. Dororo is such a good show and I love it for so many reason. but I didn't expect the Buddhist themes, and when I realised they were there everything started hitting me way more. I just understood the philosophy of the show, and I think that's one of the reasons it has really stuck me and is by far one of the best anime I have watched.
This anime is my absolute favorite! It helped get over my depression in 2019. Seeing the characters persevere through Hell on Earth and come back stronger than before is an inspiration. I hope it's the same for others.
If you want to be impressed with this series a 4th time I highly recommend the stage play adaptation. The use of practical stage effects was incredible and the cast were some of the best actors Japan could have given us for the roles. There is so much subtly and nuance in the acting that you can really only get from theater, in the same way that animation has it's own strengths. I don't think anime stage plays get the credit that they deserve here in the west because we are conditioned to believe that any live action anime adaptation is going to be bad, but Dororo has so much heart that is is something I could easily recommend to anyone. Not to mention the stage play actually debuted along side the newer anime so both shows got to do their own take on the characters as opposed to feeling like one was copying the other, so the actors really got to put their own souls into their roles.
Absolutely love that you often make vids abt the under appreciated titles in anime and manga, really appreciate it man. Truly admire the grind, love ur vids! Keep safe!
I've been going through an incredibly rough time lately and it's been hard to keep the faith that it will eventually end. Your ending lines made me start crying at work and helped me realize that I can hold on a bit longer. Thank you.
Beautifully done my friend. I also really liked that you touched on the idea that in the beginning he is at his strongest and most relatively invulnerable at the beginning of the series and far more fragile by the ending making it almost the reverse of series long training towards the bbeg.
I saw this when it first came out! Loved it and was also surprised by it! So glad you did a video on it ❤ Also I'm super pregnant at the moment and this show seriously tears at my heart strings as a first time mother.
Hope things are going well, you'll be a sick mother don't raise them with an iPad or phone though and research about estrogenic and fluoride and impact on development
Fantastic video essay dude. Tezuka laid the framework, but Mappa did a brilliant job adding depth to the story and characters. Not only that, they did a beautiful job with the animation. I would love to see Mappa adapt more Tezuka propeties. One of the reasons I love Tezuka *so very* much is his innovative storytelling, and the fact that he was just so ahead of his time in his was of thinking with a lot of things. I loved your analysis on Tezuka's outlook on the disabled. I find it interesting that two of his more well known characters (Hyakkimaru and Black Jack) were physically disabled.
The 2019 anime is definitely one of my top favorites all times...the subtleties and depth are just beautiful.... And yeah by the end I think he wanted his body parts back not because they were owed to him but so he could help Dorro and so that he would never again be put into a situation where Dora was about to die and there was *nothing* he could do!!!
This series broke me , I can’t wait to watch your review of it Edit: Thank you again for making this video. Dororo was and will be one of my faves forever
I love this video !! I just finished the 2019 anime after binge watching it in 3 days and I loved it, but you explained all the concepts in such a way that makes me love it even more !! And that ending made me emotional. I also really appreciate the relationship between Dodoro and Hyakkimaru, and I didn't realise how unique their relationship was until you mentioned it here - that they both need and protect each other in a way that you don't really see in any other media, at least as far as i can think of. They're not related and they're not bound by any outside forces or obligations to stay together - they just do. That for me is what makes it so beautiful, and makes me love this anime so much. Amazing video !!
Oh boy, new Bonsai Pop video. You know what that means? A high-quality Dororo figure. Jokes aside, Dororo was the best underwatched anime of 2019. In any other year it would have been one of the highlights of the year, but everyone dropped it later on because of how much was coming out that year. Also, the opening is one of the best ever. So visually and audibly unique.
I think it’s because the anime was hard to be watched the majority of the anime community and it’s sad but I do have the manga and have both the anime adaptations on dvd
I'm surprised there wasn't a mention of the PS2 game "Osamu Tezuka's Blood Will Tell/Dororo" That was my introduction to this work and did a great job as an adaptation I think. I remember the demons actually creeping me out.
I wanna point out how cleverly the senses regained get subverted in the show. The first thing he hears is the deafening rain, the first time he uses his new-found voice is to yell out in pain and rage, and when he recovers his eyes he can't see because of the blinding light of the fire.

I believe the headless Idol statue is supposed to portray Guanyin also known as Kannon in Japanese, she is a Buddhist bodhisattva (similar to Jizo) associated with Mercy and Compassion and often depicted with a child.
Your video helped me get through a really hard part of my life. I may not be handicapable, but I am someone with anxiety and depression and this made me feel like I can keep helping my friends once I can help myself.
i kind of on board with this anime as you talked about it but when you got to 17:54, talking about these two exploring ancient Japan and trying to understand all of these question I became fully invested. I've seen it recommended before but this make me want to go watch it right now. you always do a great job getting me interested in new shows and this is no different, keep it up man, I love your content!
I agree and disagree about the child finally becoming and embracing her female side. I felt she had lost her fear and embraced who she is. But I see the other side but I loved the ending. Great job on the review
Damn, hit me right in the feels. Thank you for that message at the end. Hard times are upon us, but they won’t last forever. We will get through with help from one another.
I saw that the voice actor for Dororo is actually a child. If she is that talented that young I can't wait to see how she performs when she grows into adulthood. Insane. Usually child voice actors are annoying
Crushing it once a-fucking-gain! Every time you release a video I am entranced, amazed, and awestruck at how well researched and visually captivating your art is. Thanks again for showing us a deep cut of an incredible anime/manga.
i LOVE how you have outlined the core and deep concepts of one of the best and most favorite anime of mine. no other anime seems to replace this and i hold it very near and dear to my heart. not a single scene in this anime was a waste, everything meant something and it was so so deep. the humor was also very well put, and i bet the editing took a lot of time. thank you so much for this, from the bottom of my heart!

I went on a Tezuka Osamu binge in college for printmaking (circa 1999) to see how woodcut was done right, I was blown away by Dororo and Black Jack. Damn first time watching your videos and I loved it. At first I thought that the plot of Hyakkimaru losing his humanity was just another cliche like in most anime. But after hearing you talk about it changed how I viewed most of the show. This was an amazing video.
Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil, Have No Fun... At least that's the way I heard it... ;-) Seriously, though, this was one of the most phenomenal shows I have ever seen, and that's coming from someone who has watch anime for over 40 years of his life. So many people slept on this series. Thanks for spreading the word, Brother.
Daigyo was also in a dilemma. His land is in the verge of starvation and war, so to save his land he have to sacrifice something but sadly, the sacrifice is kinda heavy and this is what makes me hate more, instead of taking care of his cursed son, he instead ordered to killed it.
I didn't expect to be moved to tears by your video. Or maybe it is the remembrance combined with your presentation. I have done some research after waching the anime. I really love it. It is unique. I will be forwarding this video. Thank you.
Definitely a wonderful anime. The live action movie was hilariously cool, nowhere near as dark but it stayed pretty close to the manga. All I watch is Asian movies that's how I 1st learned of Dororo, went on a mad dash to find everything I could.
I never thought of the theme of becoming whole, this was interesting. I only saw the more upfront theme that humans are stuck in the middle, we praise the morally good (Buddha) and strive to meet his ideals, yet we often act more like the demons that we despise. To me Dororo was about finding the middle ground between good and evil because we can never fully attain one side or the other.
I’m super late and just started Dororo 2019 recently and damn it is soooo good. I have like 4 episodes left. Will come back to finish this video after I catch up. Thanks for the video as always fellas. Edit: i finished the show. Super good. Hope there’s a season 2. Great video boys!
Does anyone else think that dororo could have been an inspiration for berserk? In the manga, hyakkimaru and dororo's relationship is like guts and puck's relationship when they first meet. Hyakkimaru is cursed with demons hunting him down and trying to kill him, kinda like guts and the brand of sacrifice.
I saw Dororo with my roomie and we binged it forgetting about our work and anything else because of how good it is. Seeing this video and the "Party is over!", Damnit, it feels good.
4:15 is that the Ys SEVEN intro playing in the background? goddamn it, had that stuck in my head for weeks now, and just as I am managing to push it off it shows up in the background here to claw its way back in -_-

Damn first time watching your videos and I loved it.
At first I thought that the plot of Hyakkimaru losing his humanity was just another cliche like in most anime. But after hearing you talk about it changed how I viewed most of the show. This was an amazing video.
"This is why don't tie swords to babies" 19:42. XD
Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil, Have No Fun... At least that's the way I heard it... ;-)
Seriously, though, this was one of the most phenomenal shows I have ever seen, and that's coming from someone who has watch anime for over 40 years of his life. So many people slept on this series. Thanks for spreading the word, Brother.
Dororo is literally my favorite anime of all time
My favorite anime. I watched this back in 19, I saw a random clip and after that I watched one episode, and I was hooked.
"...The butter that was there the whole time" ....BRO!
"And this is why we don't tie swords to babies." 💀 I had no business laughing that hard.
Thank you.
Shout out to all five of us old gamers that first was introduced to Dororo through the game Blood Will Tell!
Was looking for this comment 🙂
Definitely a wonderful anime. The live action movie was hilariously cool, nowhere near as dark but it stayed pretty close to the manga. All I watch is Asian movies that's how I 1st learned of Dororo, went on a mad dash to find everything I could.
Step 1: Dorohedoro
Step 2: Dororo
Step 3: hedo?
This was definitely one of my favorite bonsai pop vids definitely gonna check out this anime
I love the thoughtful takes in the anime, it's respect of life & the grey world we live in.
First time I’ve been so early on this channel. I’ve had the Dororo manga for a while now, and I definitely should’ve finished it by now
I never thought of the theme of becoming whole, this was interesting. I only saw the more upfront theme that humans are stuck in the middle, we praise the morally good (Buddha) and strive to meet his ideals, yet we often act more like the demons that we despise. To me Dororo was about finding the middle ground between good and evil because we can never fully attain one side or the other.
I think this is one of the best animes I've seen in the last 5 years.
Dude, this is one of the best videos I've ever seen. About one of the best series I've ever seen.
That Gustaberg music was perfect for that part of the video. *chefs kiss*
Dororo is one of the best ! I enjoyed it so much
I’m super late and just started Dororo 2019 recently and damn it is soooo good. I have like 4 episodes left. Will come back to finish this video after I catch up. Thanks for the video as always fellas. Edit: i finished the show. Super good. Hope there’s a season 2. Great video boys!
My introduction to Dororo was the 60’s anime. Haven’t seen the redo but it’s on the list of must have’s.
Definitely
You have no idea how happy you made a video about this anime!
Dororo is one of my favorite anime’s
I adore the way you defined Buddhism
Thank you for this video
I haven’t seen Dororo yet but I’m definitely gonna check it out now.
This video really spoke to me.
Thanks
Reminds me of "Ranking of Kings"
UA-cam showed me this 27 seconds after it was posted
I finished this series a few weeks ago.
So damned good and sooooo nostalgic in tone.
Finally! The animation and art direction blew me away the first time I saw it
I just found your page this week. So glad I subbed. My G, you have blessed me with the sauce of manga and anime. Appreciated ✊🏾
This was the best birthday gift I didn't know I needed love this series great review
Happy birthday!
I have had the Dororo manga on my shelf to long... I may need to crack it open.
I feel chill everytime I hear "Party is over" a deep sensation in my heart and it even brings tears sometimes
Love the video, wish you would’ve touched on the symbolism of Hyakimarus brother though. Very underrated character imo
What a banger! And lots of views early! Hopefully this work gets the appreciation it deserves
🎵The party is over🎵
Another absolute masterpiece of a retrospective. You are greatly appreciated!
Watched dororo 2019 when it came out and loved it, it’s one of my top 10 anime’s
I saw Dororo with my roomie and we binged it forgetting about our work and anything else because of how good it is.
Seeing this video and the "Party is over!", Damnit, it feels good.
Gotta love that "city of the ancients" theme popping up. Love you guys
4:15 is that the Ys SEVEN intro playing in the background?
goddamn it, had that stuck in my head for weeks now, and just as I am managing to push it off it shows up in the background here to claw its way back in -_-
