- During my time in Kuching, Borneo earlier this year for Chinese New Year holidays, I managed to sneak a bit of time for shutter therapy. I went out shooting on the streets with my friend, Kieron Long and we had some very friendly encounters with the local Kuching folks there! I brought the Pentax K-01 for this session.

The wrong charger was for the Fuji XF1 camera. The seller gave me a Pentax charger which was compatible with the Fuji battery. In a hurry I did last minute packing, I grabbed the charger wrongly, thinking I only had one Pentax charger, because I only have one Pentax camera!
If the batteries are black I use a Sharpie silver pen. If they are gray I use a Sharpie black pen. I do this also for all the chargers. Keeps me sane. Bonus--I found out that different Lumix cameras share the same battery! Thanks for all your great videos!!!!
Delightful episode Robin! Always fun to hang out in Kuching for a bit, Love it! Also a meeting Kieron and getting acquainted with his work. Love the colors of the K-01 and it seems like it might match well with older Pentax m42 lenses.

Nice to see the Pentax cameras getting some appreciation! I been using them since I bought my first DSLR ( K10d ) and it is still a great camera today! As a Pentaxian, The love for Pentax may be limited, the cameras have limits, but the passion for photography is strong! Thanks Robin!

The K-01 uses the same battery as that of the K-3/5/7 and K-1. That should be sufficient for a day shoot; the 16MP of the K-01 provides good color and sharpness!
Great video. Not only covers camera gear, photography techniiques and street photography ettiquette, also shows off Kuching. I love the interaction Robin has with Keiron; adds a lot to this video.

I love my Pentax K-01 too, the camera is certainly far from perfect, but it's just fun to shoot with it and the design is on another level! A very special camera, that's for sure, but not everyone would be happy with it^^
Nope, the camera is not for everyone. Also, since it is so cheap in the used market, there is zero risk in getting it now, compared to paying for full retail price 10 years or more ago.

My very first taste of photography was with a Pentax K10D. I've looked into Pentax Q cameras for some fun photography but the K01 may be the one I grab for fun. Currently my fun camera is the Lumix LX100, even though all my cameras are fun!
You got the right idea - photography should be fun, a lot of people are missing this crucial point.
I always liked the look of the k-01, quirky cameras have always been some of my favorite but that Leica Q2 is my dream camera. Regarding street photography.... please be nice to people. I usually go for angles and shadows in buildings and street animals instead of people. When I do take photos of people I'll almost always approach them and show them the shot. If anyone ever asks me to delete it I'll do it even though nobody has asked me to do so yet. If you're kind to people it'll keep photography more accessible to everyone and cities/countries won't have to pass laws limiting access.
Yes, being respectful and kind are important, something newer breed of photographers seem to neglect. They want the shock factor, jumping on strangers with lens inches away from their face and have flash at maximum power hitting their eyes. And they walk away, so rude and disgusting if you ask me. They call this art, I call it trash.
Shutter lag on the K-01 drove me nuts, missed so many shots because of it!
Very enjoyable video. I agree with being respectful to other people, however I am to shy and find it hard to approach people I don't know, so I use a longer lens and then feel like I am stalking people. (I can't win)📸
I think we do live at very different parts of the world, people here are generally very warm and friendly, so approaching strangers is a lot easier.
@@robinwong I would say it is your warm and friendly approach that helps a lot. I have been told (not asked) to not take photos around the streets even when they are not the subject. Never know if they are hiding something or they don't just don't know that in public photography is legal within the rules and laws of state or country.

I'm curious, how open are people there to foreigners? I can imagine being "one of them" helps making people relaxed, particularly since you speak the language and don't really stand out that much.

Great video Robin! Love Pentax! My K10D from 2006 is still going strong, I have it paired with a 50mm 1.4. I was always wondered what it's like shooting with the K-01, it's indeed very unusual looking camera and quirky is the right word to describe it. The colours do look good though.
Pentax makes wonderful cameras, I wish they were a bit more serious and got into the mirrorless game, I think they can do some serious damage!

You answered my question Robin after figuring out what I meant, but also I wanted to ask is the EM 5 still worth using when the better EM 1 is also in the bag in you opinion

Thanks for dropping by, Keith, appreciate that! Hope the tour is going well in UK! I think for stills E-M5 Mark II still works great, but E-M1 Mark II is definitely a huge upgrade in everything. I'd carry the E-M5 Mark II to keep things smaller in footprint, especially for travel.
@robinwong thank you Robin problem is I brought the EM 5 for the very reason you suggested but I've since done comparison shots and the EM1 especially with the 12-100 is do much better ! So then I'm always a bit deflated using the 5 thinking it's not as good. Think we all strive for the best sharpest images I'll have a think on it.

This camera had pricing problem. We had it in university laboratory mainly for microscope work, but I used it time to time. At the same time I had K-5 which was the full DSLR and the price of them was almost the same although K01 is significantly crippled on several levels. Brick design also lacks on ergonomy. They should have turned it into EVF camera with classic K5 shape and it will be much more successful. Also AF is somewhat weak since it only has basic contrast detect.
DA40/2.8 is quite good lens, I have the metal standard version. It only has harsh bokeh at some occasions. But I like how small it is. Perfect companion for DA18-135/3.5-5.6 WR for travelling light.
K-5 with the same battery can do about 1200 photos using prism and no flash.
Of course, the K-01 made zero sense when it came out. Only after more than 10 years now, the price came down to much in the used market, then it is OK to get one just to try things out.
Pentax missed a lot of things in this K-01, but I like how they were so daring in design and made it look as unconventional as it was.
Hey Robin, not sure if you've covered this topic before. Is it possible if you can make a video on how you approach people and talk to them to take their portraits in the street? From the asking process until you leave the area? I always feel very awkward and intimidated by the whole thing that I've ended up only doing landscape and family documentary photography. Gives me such anxiety and adrenaline rush to even ask people to take their photos. How do you overcome that?

Hi Robin, well it's a cool camera but unfortunately it's doesn't come even close to the quality of a Olympus OMD cameras! So I liked your video but it doesn't convinced me to think of apparting from my em-5👍💯❤️
The Pentax K-01 was so cheap in the used market, it was a no brainer to get and try something different. It was not fair to be compared to OM-D, as the Pentax was a "failed" mirrorless camera, but I do find it to be quite a charm.

I am a Pentax fan and their legacy lenses . . . 645z.
Their Monochrome line up has no red dots I believe!

Sure. When someone sends me one. Pentax is non existent in this part of the world, you get higher chance of getting struck by lightning than finding a Pentax camera here
