  • After a recent performance in the AG studio, Chris Robinson Brotherhood guitarists Chris Robinson and Neal Casal shared quick histories of the instruments they used on the band’s latest release, Barefoot in the Head.
In this video, Robinson tells the story of his cherished 1959 Martin D-18, which he purchased in Hollywood in the early ’90s and has been his go-to songwriting guitar ever since.
Later in the clip, CRB lead guitarist Neal Casal recalls the moment he realized that resistance was futile and that he couldn’t not buy the 1952 Gibson SJ he encountered in a Philadelphia music store.

Really very sad to discover that Neal Casal had passed. Heard that he had been suffering from serious health issues for a while. He made some fine music of his own and was a great acoustic picker. It is well worth listening to his solo material - some moving songs and beautiful acoustic playing on his albums, in particular.

Thanks Chris and Neal. Great segment - love the guitars and the stories. Also heard two great acoustic songs done at the magazine as well - you two guys have still got “it” in spades!

He talked about how after playing one chord he knew he had to have that Gibson. And then we never get to hear one note from the guitar.
