As a history teacher, I can't express how helpful it is to use Kings and Generals in the classroom. Unparalleled mapping!
Kindly include the book 'Return of a King' by William Dalrymple in your syllabus.
Wish my schools teachers also did this
Nah, the map un this vídeo is horrible. So many things wrong.
Just wack on a kings and generals video in class and put your feet up
I love that you use this channel. Wish more teachers would do this type of thing.
From what I can tell there isn't much on youtube about the historical figure of F.M. Bailey who was a British agent trapped in Tashkent during the Bolshevik revolution. His survival and escape through disguise and spy-craft make him a James Bond in the 1920s. He was so good at his craft that the Soviet Cheka unknowingly hired him to capture himself. He eventually escaped to Persia. A great read on this subject is called Mission to Tashkent by Peter Hopkirk.
Thanks for all your great work over the years. I've been a fan since this channel started. It's hard for me to pick a topic there are so many. I love it especially when you cover uncommon topics like eastern europe or go more in depth on popular stuff like with the Byzantine empire.

Its my experiance from studying the history of Afghanistan that Whenever tyrants reache its peak , God simply sends them to Afghanistan to teach them a lesson of humility.
When was Hitler in Afghanistan?
Your experience of studying afghan history is wrong then multiple empires have ruled Afghanistan for hundreds of years at a time with no real problem. It’s only really America and the USSR that had problems subduing the region.

England conquers land: «God save the queen!»
Russia conquers land: «Barbarians!»
I mean yeah, makes sense…
The Doctrine of Goebbels from London, Paris, Warsaw has been constantly denigrating Russia with its own atrocities for 5 centuries
Yep makes perfect sense actually
I am from the East. The English are the most cowardly nations of the earth. They do not enter a war except behind a sedition that they fabricate between religions of the same coexisting people. And this is maliciousness. Even the Mongols used to reject it. They were the most used armies for diseases in their wars. So they spread infectious diseases among the villagers and then looted the land. They managed to complete that. In South North America, but in the East, it is the Eastern civilization that knows how to deal with invaders, no matter how strong they are. Resistance is the solution and defeat.
If you're interested in this time period of Central Asia, I recommend reading the manga Otoyomegatari by Kaoru Mori. It follows many characters, but primarily through the eyes of an eccentric British explorer as he journeyed through Central Asia during the time of the Great Game. You can get quite the in-depth look into the diverse cultures of the region stretching from Turkestan to Persia and Anatolia. Latest chapters hints at exploring the British Raj as well.
The updates are so slow tho, but the art...

I've been waiting for this content for months. Thank you Kings and Generals for covering this fascinating topic.
I am glad you said that Britain had the desire to conquer Afghanistan and add it to their empire when most deny it. After the disastrous defeat of the first Anglo-Afghan war, England made it look like they had no desire to conquer Afghanistan but to stop Russian influence from reaching their borders. I would make lies too, to cover my hide.
We are the Graveyard of Empires after all!
I mean, I get why Britain deny's ever ruling Afghanistan. There isn't much of anything value to extract and ruling the country is just a liability.

Yet another solid video coming from *Kings and Generals*. These people just never fail to amaze...
Currently reading Hopkirk's "The Great Game," this couldn't have come at a better time!
Thanks for making this video. Ive been waiting for this classic cold war for a while.
I did this as my A-level history coursework, really interesting time and a good summary. Something to consider on this is whilst the Great Game in Central Asia stabilized and came to and end, the Great Game continued on, moving Eastwars with British and Russian competition via the Russians in Manchuria and the British via supporting Japan in a quasi-proxy war. Would love to see a followup to this video exploring that aspect of the Russo-Japanese war

My Dear Friend Khalid Stanikzai's grand father were part of the great game they fought in Third Anglo Afghan War as well, his father told us that We (Pashtuns) love war and that is our biggest problem which is being used by foreign powers since the time of greeks and will be used in a future.
Love war so much you became the talibans and is-k. My ancestors have told that the pashtuns are the most fooled and dumbfounded tribe that exists in Afghanistan that only brings misery upon itself and others with war. Which can be seen by looking at modern day Afghanistan in ruins thanks to pashtun rule
We don't love war, we actually loathe it, but we are forced to fight because we keep getting invaded.
There are two types of Pashtuns. Tribal and non-tribal. You are talking about tribal one.
The non tribal ones which are city dwellers and whose numbers were very little in 1900 but exceed many times the tribal Pashtuns today. They have to compete economically for influence in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The business of war(from which few khans, mullahs and foreign powers benefited the most. poor which were more than 99% of population suffered) is all time low. We should scientifically advance and beware of those who encourage Pashtuns to take arms.
Alexander had nothing to do with pashtuns and during the medival times the pashtuns were not more or less violent than any one else
