In the song and lyrical context, when he says he'll break before he bends, He's in effect saying he'll never consider being a racist or be somewhat ok with racism. He would rather die than stop fighting for equality.

The Bible Belt is a region of of the southern United States where Christianity plays a big roll in society, but I love the way he plays off the literal meaning of the word belt to describe the impact that region can have on people as a welt (as in a mark or scar that a literal belt would leave)

Check out the their album "The Uplift Mofo Party Plan." Yes he's rapping. They have a lot of rap in their songs especially the early stuff. Anthony began to sing more as his voice developed and he became comfortable with it. Great band. The Bible Belt is a term associated with an informal region in the Southern US in which socially conservative evangelical Protestants play a role in politics.

Those were profound lyrics! Great breakdown! Enjoyed! Keep it up... Diversity brings understanding of our similarities. There is too much us and them... we need more "we"....To many people think rap is black and rock is white... but those who enjoy all genres of music know that there is a lot more unity in music than disparity. There are a lot of good messages in music that need to be shared on both sides of the platform. I think it would be interesting if you tried exploring songs of all genres that brought a positive unifying message. I was just listening to the Black Eyed Pesa the other day... Where is the Love.... amd GNR ...Civil War.. ill make that my suggestion to the cause... None if us wins unless all of us win... Shout out to Red Hot Chili Peppers on this track!

And to think the LA music scene counted these guys out at first, they almost didn’t make it. Now they have been going strong for 35+ years and never disappoint. Flea on bass basically led this band when the rest were all cracked out. Check out their cover of Higher Ground by Stevie Wonder and the song Magic Johnson! Freaky Stylie! Luv ur commentary and you can relate even to white boys from Hollywood who speak the truth. “Whatever happened to Humanity”!

IAMHE2K20: The "Bible Belt" refers to the old-school southern states: The South, in other words. I believe at the time, Anthony , and maybe the other peppers were shooting heroin. The story goes something like the cops got ahold of Anthony Kiedis and were making him take drug tests before they would release him from jail or something. The South was NOT COOL with their heroin scene, and Anthony felt that he'd gotten a welt from the bible belt. Something like that. Lol.

I'm actually a bit confused. You're American, I believe, so I thought that the Bible Belt reference would be second nature to you. It's essentially the Southern region of the country, where conservative Protestantism is prevalent (and from where most of the prejudiced discourse in the country comes from). Maybe it's less prevalent nowadays then it was back then, but I don't live in the US, so I can't say for certain. Anthony has been singing/rapping about those themes since the mid-80s when the band first formed, and they've been very supportive of the native and black communities for as long as one can tell.
