Audie Murphy, a real hero and lucky too. My Father said he saw many men attempt similar heroics, very few he said, succeeded. We owe that generation more than words can say. Freedom is not free, it is our duty to protect this freedom from all tyranny.

I grew up with a tremendous crush on Murphy and was very proud of his heroics as a fellow Texan. Cried like a baby when he died. My dad was a WWII veteran and received medical care at the Audie Murphy V. A. Hospital. I'd spend my time down in the area of the hospital dedicated to Murphy. One of his uniforms was on display and they showed a copy of To Hell and Back on a T.V. Other memorabilia was there too. I did research on him (crush you know). Found out his mother's maiden name was Killian. I am descended from some Killians and had to find out if the was any connection. Turns out we were second cousins, four times removed. The biggest crush of my life and turns out we were cousins! Life can be so unfair sometimes! 🥺

21 years old. His helmet looks like it would blow off in a high wind. My sister had a crush on him, my dad, a WWll vet, served in the 82nd Airborne understood the real difficulties he went through, so we watched every movie of his at least twice, some more than I'm willing to admit.

I live in Johnson City Tennessee. Just outside JC is the town of Erwin . There is a bridge on I 26 named the Lattie Tipton Memorial Bridge. I learned several years ago that bridge was in honor of Audie's friend Lattimore Tipton aka as Brandon in his autobiographical movie To Hell and Back. Lattie was from the small town of Erwin Tennessee. As a Budman I worked the Erwin VA. once a week for years. I read his book every year as a memorial to those who fought in WW2. If you read the foreword of Audie's book he says..."if there be any glory in war let it rest in men like these..Private Joe Sieja killed in action on Anzio beachead january 1944 and Private Lattie Tipton killed in action near Ramatuelle France, august 1944.

I was talking to my dad the other day and, as he served in the army when this film was made, he told me he is in the marching formation shown here! Ft Benning or Fort Ord (I cannot remember). He said Audie shook hands and spoke to some of the soldiers shown in formation here. He asked my Dad how he liked the Army and my dad said he hated it (even though he volunteered)! A superior standing by was ready to tell my dad off for his comment but Audie interjected and said "That's ok, most soldiers dislike it ". My dad's brush with greatness....

Hollywood throws millions of dollars into making remakes of movies or tv shows that really do no better than the first film. I really can't think of any film that is in desperate need of a modern adaptation than this one. To Hell and Back, I think with filming technology today, new generations could appreciate Audie Murphy and his courage. And as violent and bloody as it may be, I will take my 10 yearold daughter and explain this was all done for us. Never forget.

unless they really screwed it up. You KNOW they wouldn't get a guy with that accent and that education level. No way to mimic his natural modesty even after all that shit he'd been through. I dunno. I like the idea as far as making it even more clear what he went through, a la Saving Private Ryan-like techniques. But some of the action scenes here are pretty good and convey it pretty well, esp the ending and the farmhouse.

Colonel. Thank you for your words of encouragement. This is a tribute to one of the greatest fighting men in history. He is the most decorated man in WW2. I understand Charles Upham got 2 VCs, but the VC is ranked second below the MOH.

    • @georgemoore7186
      @georgemoore7186 2 роки тому

That is WRONG, the VC is not an American medal, please praise Audie all you want, he certainly deserves it, but do not downplay those who are awarded the Victoria Cross, it is more often than not awarded posthumously, America gives medals to everyone, even if they trip over and hurt themselves in a war zone they are awarded a medal for a stubbed toe (being facetious of course but not that far from the truth)
Commonwealth countries make it a lot harder to earn medals and the VC (Victoria Cross) is the hardest of all to win, it is at least the equal of the MOH
Watch a British movie called ZULU starring Michael Caine and you will get a taste of what winning a VC is all about
As much as I love and admire Audie, Americans are always up themselves about their own importance, to the point they need to put others down, that shows in reality a distinct inferiority complex

  • @CoolestDude38NC

What I respect about Audie Murphy the most is not his battlefield heroics. He had that in spades. Murphy spoke about the psychiatric and neurology problems veterans were experiencing from high density combat...trauma...during WW2. Things like PTSD, severe depression, alcoholism, psychosis...and brain injuries from experiencing artillery shells and bombs blowing up nearby, creating rapid changes in barometric pressure. The human brain was not designed to tolerate explosions going off nearby...creates what is now called TBI or Traumatic Brain Injury. In Murphy's era, talking publicly about such subjects was taboo, shoved under the rug, the Army considered psych and TBI problems "cowardice." To me, Murphy talking publicly about such subjects took more bravery than being a hero on the battlefield.

I'm a bit confused by the heavy handed but most compelling war bond commercial (3:55). This movie was released in 1955, 10 yrs after WWII and two years after Korea. Not sure what it means, "I died today." This part must be from WWII, as "War Bonds," per se, were last issued in WWII.

That was the protocol for military courtesy back then. American nurses are commissioned, as are Chaplains, but neither has any command authority over soldiers in the field. Nurses can have authority over other nurses and enlisted medical personnel. Chaplains hold no authority.

Originally when casting the role of Audey Murphy Hollywood didn't like Audey Murphy because he didn't look the part.

brilliant. Yeh, I'm sure the audiences of the day wouldn't give him "a pass" on his inadequacies. I guess now we'd get Vin Diesel or The Rock; maybe Bautista.

Audie Murphy did some amazing things, but that probably was because he was psychotic. He had no regard for his own life and luck was on his side. His 1955 biographical movie (where the footage for this video obviously comes from), was just 10 years after the war; but I suppose he forgot what a German uniform is supposed to look like. The movie was so cheesey; they used the WW1 steel helmets for the Germans and practically no field gear. The famous battle at the end was supposed to be in winter.

As mark said, your protest would've looked better if you did the jail time. Running to Canada and slinking back makes it look less like you protested a war and more like you you just cared about your own comfort.

well the nurses are like officers Idk how to put it

In any military, medical personnel carry ridiculous ranks. This has two reasons: Pay grade and chain of command. They are highly qualified personnel with high level education and therefore get a high rank by default. This saves the military the hassle of having to create an elaborate pay system. It's easier to pay soldiers a flat amount based on rank and give ranks based on qualifications than to break down the qualifications of every individual soldiers into an elaborate pay scheme. Of course, it doesn't hurt to give the people who have the ultimate say in all medical questions a high enough rank so that nobody would dare question that authority.

@@naphackDT The real reason nurses were made officers was to keep lonely, girl-starved 20-yr olds laid up in hospitals from constantly sweet talking them and hitting on them. Since vast majority of wounded would be enlisted men, such conduct would be prohibited by military laws regarding "fraternization" that prevented close social contact between even male personnel (since military was all male until into WWII) (no socializing, business deal, card playing, even dining together without special permission [father son, brothers, uncle]). It was done to protect women mainly but also to hold down having to jerk knots in an endless string of enlisted men who either needed to get better or go on to fight the war.
