THE ENEMY BELOW Robert Mitchum (1957 Color WW2 film)

- It is some time in the middle of World War II. The American Buckley-class destroyer escort USS Haynes is on patrol in the South Atlantic. Lieutenant Commander Murrell, a former captain in the Merchant Marine and now an active-duty officer in the Naval Reserve, has recently taken command of the ship; he joined the Navy after his freighter was sunk by a German U-boat, and is still recovering from injuries incurred in the sinking of his previous Navy warship and 21 days marooned adrift afterwards.
Before the U-boat is first spotted, one sailor questions the new captain's fitness and ability. Once a skilled game of cat-and-mouse tracking the U-boat gives way to a series of even more finely honed and intuitive attacks, the crew falls in strongly behind their new skipper.
He's matching deadly wits with U-boat Kapitän zur See von Stolberg, a wily former World War I Unterseaboot skipper deep into a conflict he resents for a Nazi regime he detests. As the battle that emerges tests both commanders and their crews, each man grows to respect his opponent as he discovers his rival can read his mind.

I’ve lost count how many times I’ve seen this movie, it never gets old. Mitchum had so many great roles.
Agreed, I have been watching it since a kid in the 70s.
@@Temporal_Assassin Me too.
Lots of war films from the 1950s portrayed ordinary Germans as separate from the devout Nazis.
The USSR was the greater threat in the 1950s. Hollywood made movies which allowed the viewer to regard modern, reformed West Germany as an ally. Same with "Rommel The Desert Fox".
One of the best sub movies ever made. Mitchum and Jergens were perfectly cast. The psychological game between the two is epic. I’ve watched this movie 4 or 5 times 👍👍👍
Have you seen, Das Boot or The Cruel Sea? Both excellent films

Sept 22 2024. This is probably the 5th time in the last 3 to 4 months watching this movie. Great movie.
Golden age of hollywood...when actors were real actors....no special effects no cgi BS....just good, hard core story telling....
Yes!!
OK for the actors were actors part, but "Hard core story telling" sounds a bit frivolous for a cliché packed action movie with pompous music and the "all Germans weren't that bad'" angle, now that they were helping Western Europe to keep the Red Huns or Orcs out.... On VERY rare occassions that was so, a German pilot refusing to down a burning B 17 that could not fight back etc. The storytelling here is... well... whatevern but not hard core.
Ironic you say that about this film, since it won an academy award for special effects.
You're right👍

What angle do other movies have?
Mitchum was a real man, Hollyweird never affected him.
I loved he said jail was like Hollywood without the riffraff.
He was scary in " Cape Fear"
One of the best submarine movies ever made. Not a line of dialogue out of place or wasted. The best cat and mouse game ever played, even better than Red October.
Das Boot was far better.

This movie was made for a specific purpose,... after the war, reconciliation between the axis and allied powers was important. Shows both side fighting with courage and valor, both captains tired of war,.. men saving men from the other side into the life boats, and the captains behaving with honor..... a very unique movie.... with a feel good ending...
Well and accurately said.. but so many commenters seem to miss the point that it is a 67 year old MOVIE.. not a documentary.. ;-) Cheers.. Liam Dale
Germany (West) was our Nato ally in 57. Japan was also our friend now as well. Times change and people move on with life.
It’s good to separate the ideology from the humanity. It’s hard to do.
You know it’s a good war movie when you cry.
@@MarkSmith-js2pu Don't tell anyone. The ending was spectacular.. Me too!
My dad served on a Destroyer in the Atlantic for two years and a PT Boat in the Pacific for about two years. He joined at 17 on 12/8/41. He didn't say to much about the war except some funny things. But he said it didn't matter even when a enemy ship went down it was a feeling he couldn't describe. Guess you had to have been there. He respected the German somewhat but he hated the Japanese because they were so cruel to American Prisoners. We will never see another Generation of these men.
My father fought the Japanese 1st then the Germans and he respected the Germans more. He did not care where he had to fight as long as it was not the Aleutians again.. I have also seen this movie about 5 times too
As a famous historical writer from Massachusetts named Doris Kearns Goodwin said in the title of her book, it was "NO ORDINARY TIME."
One of the best war movies of all time.
What a fantastic motion picture, another example of the quality of work coming out of Hollywood in 1957. Great movies such as this came to small town movie theaters across our country. Thanks UA-cam for providing such gems for us to enjoy.

Great hollywood / dept. Of NAVY collaboration. Very cinematic well acted full of action & suspence. This is one that is underrated. Mitchum at his best playing a naval officer to the hilt.
Mitchum: "Can't you see this man is dying?" Juergens: "He is my friend." One of the classic lines of this movie.

One of the greatest war movies ever, if not the best!
I've seen this flick many times and it never gets old. Who wouldn't love duty aboard a ship like this one in the Caribbean no less!
None of the stress going on in the Pacific!
The USS Borie had a real-life version of this story except that all the Germans were either killed in the surface battle or were lost at sea after.

Hi, I'm Doug McClure; you may remember me from such classic war movies as this one.
Met Robert Mitchum on the beach Ocean City MD. 1966 walked up as a boy and shook his hand, his wife laughed 😅
I met Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis 😂.
@ArmyOne519 just viewed a MARTIN/ LEWIS comedy . Took place in army training camp. DEAN a sgt. 😂 and Jerry a disorderly recruit. Very boisterous lots of slapstick a few musical numbers. In 1950 AMERICA of the era seems very distant. Damn those years to come were something special

My father took me to see this movie when it came out in 1957. I was nine years old. Skip many, many chapters over many, many decades and I retired as a master from the Merchant Marine. My father taught me how to be a man. Taking me to see this movie was one of his many, many lessons.

They discontinued the Oscar’s for Best Original Story in 1956.
As far as I can tell, there hasn’t been an original story ever since.
Maybe a few but now they are mostly reduced to raiding the comics for stories. Even the comics were from back then originally
Love this movie; seen it a few times before. One of the best sub movies. Love the good ending. "Maybe next time I wont throw you a rope" . . ."I think you will". Mutual respect born from a great fight .
It's still like that. I've been escorting Russian boomers through Danish waters to and from the Baltic sea, and despite them not wanting us around, there was never a moment when if one side waved, the other wouldn't wave back.
There is a special bond between sailors, even if on opposing sides in a political dispute, and it is there because we are all sailors and have to fight the seas on equal terms. So we always have a soft spot for all sailors in distress. We may try to kill each other in combat, but the moment it turns into a fight for survival against the sea, the combat is over and hostilities ended. It is now a fight to rescue and to survive, and in that game, we are all on the same side. When a sailor is fighting for his life in the water, there is no such thing as war or enemies. There is only the fight to keep him alive and get him out of the water. The war can wait for that long.
@@Jens-Viper-Nobel Old U.S. Navy veteran here. It's true that all sailors are brothers when it comes to rescue at sea.
@@leestamm3187 Tell that to the Japs in WWII. They did atrocious things to sailors they "rescued."

Howdy,
Thank you for sharing this classic movie, I really enjoyed watching this movie, this is my 4th time watching it, this was when actors were actors, no blue screens, just good scripts, with good actors, telling a good story, while actually acting, I saved this movie the first time I watched it, and have no doubt, I'll be watching it again one day, Very Cool movie indeed..
It's been years since I've watched this film, but was an epic. A battle of wits and minds, an intellectual and skill-based stand-off, you almost to a degree forget it's a war movie.
Such a great movie!
Checking the release date of this movie. 1958! Jeez, I was just a little tot of 7 years old! Started first grade. Living in Newport Oregon! 😊
Brought back memories of being a kid and watching this with my Mom . There was this movie show every afternoon from a Detroit TV station , i think it was called Kennedy Presents ? He would introduce movies from the Ambassador Bridge. Since my Grand Dad served in the RCNVR during WW2 , this really cauggt my attention , and even now , 60 some years later , i remembered it so well.

This is the first war movie that I saw that portrayed the war from both points of views. That's what makes it so memorable.
Captains doing their jobs, without being driven by hatred. Hate is the real enemy that lies just below our facade of civility.
great movie , Thanks .
A really great war movie ! it even inspired the classic Star trek episode ''Balance of Terror''' in teh sixties, Romulan as the Germans, Federation as the americans
I've seen this movie several times. I applaud the portrayal of both sides, U.S. and German as real human beings and not stereotyped persons. And ot delved into how war affects everyone.
A little movie trickery to boot. In real life, the German captain, Jurgens, was 3 inches taller then Mitchum, but it didn't look that way at the end lol.... Rumor has it, Star Trek used the premise of this movie when they did Captain Kirk vs the experienced Romulan Commander
The reality is that war is hell, and whether you want to acknowledge it or not, the reality is people died, no matter how smart or sharp the people in command are.
This movie inspired Star Trek Gene Roddenberry to make Balance of Terror. Then later on Quality of Mercy..
Excellent pacing, cinematography is exceptional. The actors are well above average. I love this movie as a relaxing afternoon watch.
Great movie for a particular aspect of World War II naval combat. I first saw this on television probably '79. More action than 'Tora, Tora, Tora', not as drawn out as 'Midway', sub vs. destroyer.
Movie was so good a star trek episode was based on it....
Yes , the balance of terror, with Mark Lenard as the Romlean commander.
I must have seen this movie shortly after release, probably with mom and dad and sisters at a drive-in. I remember the sailor losing his fingers, and the U-Boat captain saying "they make them good in Germany."
Thank You for a BEAUTIFUL Movie!

Normally I don’t like cat n mouse u boat movies, but this was exceptionally brilliant. A great movie!
Such an intense movie, star trek produced an enjoyable revised version.

Star Trek's "The Enemy Within" was based on it

When the German Captain explains his reasons, that is a very well written text.
I always love when the crews tell the Capt about how deep they can or can’t go….. 🤣
Always thought the shot with the destroyer straddling the sub was lame until a few weeks ago I saw a photo of a US destroyer that had collided with a US submarine. Almost identical.

destroyers are submarine killers and that is what dad was on in WII.
This is a great movie and I watch it when ever I need to wait an hour or so. see who throws the rope.
This movie was top-tier and, like many other videophiles, I’ve lost track how many times I’ve seen it. Interesting nonetheless, for all you Star Trek fans, the episode: “Balance of Terror”
(Dec 15, 1966) very closely mirrors the storyline of this movie. Don’t know if it was deliberate or just a wild coincidence: “The Enemy Below” was released in 1957 so if it was a “borrowed” idea, then the person responsible would have to be Gene Roddenberry.
One of Star Trek's best episodes. 👍
Classic always wat he'd this with my Dad
Excellent production. Thank you.
