  • Starting at Cardiff Central 37607/37609/20306/20310 pass having departed Canton Depot on their way to the now closed Pengam Yard, east of Cardiff. On their arrival the 4 locos shunt the train down the line to Cardiff Docks before reversing back into Pengam Yard. Here the pair of 20s and 37s separate and reform for their departure east back onto the mainline towards Bristol. Also note the busy mainline with Transrail and Load Haul locos passing with steel, coal, oil and logs. Finally memories too of HSTs and mail trains

The 20's & 37's paired-up on load sounds great👍. Im sure if only we still had 20's & 37's roaming around the country it would make a lot of people happy!

Just come across this one. Very interesting. I had just left BR service at Birmingham New Street at that date. I had been a shunter, and was then a platform chargeman. As you say it all looked a bit long winded, but you just managed to get the end result. Great stuff.

To think that area is now full of new houses, and the wall on the bridge is now too high to see over, due to centenary installation last year

Remember the flame 🔥 by Cathays rail depot?
I was a kid on North in my dads car and I still don't know what that flame was.

Some rather complicated doings. I wonder why they felt four locos were necessary? Interesting view at 4:35 with four 37s in view

Back in 1998 information wasn't available ( no mobiles/internet) even knowing it was running was down to my friend Rowland who knew signalmen etc.

Great video with the 20:s and 37:s ! Was it normally 4 loco:s in that train?

I'm only an enthusiastic photographer, and back in '98 little information was available about loco movements. I just had a tip off about the move from Rowland. I thinks it would have been a stock move, ie rather thanks send the 2 20s separately

The short period of time that DRS had the contract for the Coatbridge Freightliner was an absolute farce with failures. The train was rostered for 2 x 37's then 2 x 20's replaced one 37 and I believe on this occasion one of the 37's was faulty hence four locomotives. Ponthir bank was a real challenge for 2 x 20's + 37.

Are you the Martin Bray I've met many times in S/Wales, especially at Margam depot on the naming of an 08?
