this was a LEGENDARY taping. the irony is that kids shows come on during the day. but this episode was going to come on late at night when there supposed to be sleep. brilliant. i bechu all of them are going to remember that day. this is why conan is the best. I was 14 at the time, and watched it when it first aired lol. I still remember it like it was yesterday. I would stay up late behind my parents back to watch Conan lol.
My god-- I finally found it. This was the first episode of Late Night I ever watched. I remember seeing the parade of sick exotic birds and feeling seen comedically for the first time. I had no idea it who Conan was, but eventually re-discovered it again.
I’m so happy this was finally uploaded. I remember when this originally aired. This was during that time on Late Night where the network was threatening to pull the plug on the show every week. Conan and the writers just got more willing to try anything because they just wanted to have fun on TV. I liked the novelty and originality but it was honestly a disaster. There were so many moments when the kids got antsy and they had to pull out distractions to keep them interested. I can tell a lot of those moments are edited out. Now when I tell people he did this, few find it hard to believe.
I was the same age as many of those kids in the audience at that time. Now most of us are in our thirties. To be fair I would sneak out into the living room to watch late night talk shows, and Conan was definitely my favorite. 🤫

This was peak late night comedy, along with SNL at the time.
They were taking risks. Not everything hit, but when it did, it was pure magic.
For me the early 2000-2005 conan was probably the peak conan comedy. Joel and max were great additions to the skit roster.

This was truly a risky decision (in multiple ways) by Conan to make this episode, but I commend the bravery! TV needs more risk-takers.
