Repair Replace Stuck GE Dryer Timer Switch
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 сер 2020
- We have a GE dryer with a timer/switch dial that will not rotate. It is so stuck that we broke the plastic knob trying to get it advance/rotate.
This is a known and common problem that is easy for a do-it-yourselfer to fix.
The parts were sourced locally without any delays and cost about CDN$100 (~ USD$75) and completed the work in about 15 minutes.
In case you were unaware, As of 2016 GE is a brand of China's Haier but prior to that acquisition GE devices were manufactured under the following brands and often use the same parts and assembly techniques.
General Electric
Adora
Amana
Americana
Beau*Mark
BeefEater
Camco
Concept II
Eterna
GE
General Electric
Hotpoint
Kenmore
McClary
Moffat

I wanted to come back and comment again after going through this process. Your step by step instructions and video made this so simple. Thank you again!
Replaced my GE dryer timer switch and knob yesterday after watching your video a few days ago. Easy and simple, thanks to watching you do it first. The dryer works perfectly again. Happy wife, happy life. Thanks, EH!
This video is right on time for me. Thanks! Also, as Dorene mentioned in the comments, people should take care not to just replace a stripped knob and end up with an unrepaired timer that just runs and runs and never cuts off. I had a stripped knob and got a new one from a local appliance parts shop. But before I installed it, I carefully used pliers to make sure my old timer’s shaft would still turn before I installed the new knob, so I wouldn’t strip the new knob trying to turn a bad timer. Now I’m keeping a close eye on every dryer load to make sure the old timer is working. If not I will closely follow your video so thanks again!
Your video was such help! I was able to replace my mom's timer and knob with out the crazy repairman fees. Thank you so much for making this video!!!
Thank you for sharing this video. I knew what I was getting into! And kudos to the comment below by Joseph Fontoura, who suggested taking the two screws out on the outside of the top unit in order to flip the whole cover and have easy access to the parts from above, without being at an odd backside angle. It made all the difference in how easy this was! I had a tiny screwdriver with the right size torx tip to do the screw, and it would have been challenging to do that from the back side and at an upward angle with all the wires still in place. Your "move the wires one at a time from the old to the new" was a perfect method. It took me about 45 minutes total to do this.
I am glad my video was helpful and I thank you for watching and commenting.
I has this exact same problem occur this summer on the same model.
Best Buy Canada's Geek Squad wound up sending me the same model as a full replacement dryer, because after 3 months of waiting and hanging clothes to air dry, their repair service claimed that this part was on "indefinite backorder", so a full machine replacement became the best option for them.
Thank you so, so much for providing this tutorial and the part number that needs to be replaced! I will for sure use this guide when this new machine inevitably fails as well.
My advice: avoid this dryer and avoid Geek Squad! I had to call a dozen times with the same story before we were taken care of.
Very much agree stay away from this dryer.
Thank you for this video. We woke up this morning to our dryer doing exactly what is happening here. Initially thought it was just the knob was cracked, but then tried to turn it with pliers as you tried here and it's frozen. Was able to order the same part number (works for my model) from PartSelect and the knob from amazon, hopefully be working by this weekend. A new dryer is not in the budget currently!
Just wanted to say thank you for making videos like this. You saved me a big repair bill when this happened to my dryer, and I learned a bunch in the process too! Also, fun fact, I took apart the old one and the little plastic gears inside looked like something from a little kid's building set. It was so weird to see what looked like little toy pieces was what made my dryer work (or in this case, not work)! haha
Glad it helped. Silly little part to fail... it should not
Beauty you are too ❤⚘
I was wondering is there anyway that I could TIL use the timer switch once I remove the back panel
Thank you for this video! I would have never thought about replacing the timer switch myself but this video made it look easy and it was! The entire repair only cost me about $50 which is way cheaper than if I would have had to hire a tech.
Same thing happened to my machine. The warranty replaced the knob the first time it broke. Replacement knob just broke and here I am replacing the timing switch and the actual knob is on back order. I’ve been using a pair of pliers to turn the dryer on and can’t do that anymore as the shaft just broke off. I think that since this seems to be a quality problem with GE and this model, I’m going to fix it and get rid of these machines and it can be someone else’s problem moving forward. Thanks for doing this video. It’s appreciated.
Where did you find the part? Repair man said my timer is burnt.
I have had to replace this part twice already. My dryer is 4 yrs old (still under extended warranty thankfully) and this happened again. I would never by another GE appliance after this very shotty design. Reading everyone's comments shows this is definitely a part that should have a recall on it!
Very good video. Concise and to-the-point with accurate details and no unnecessary jibber-jabber.
Thanks Ritchie
This video was so helpful! I followed it step by step and it was a breeze, thanks to you!
You saved me from taking the whole thing apart to figure this out… thank you!!!
Thank you so much, fixed my problem! I was starting to freak out it would be a pricey fix!
All I can say is thank you. Thank you!! You saved me so much money.
Awesome video. I fixed my own dryer! Saved myself a lot of money. Thank you.
Glad it helped!
This was very helpful thanks! This was the first video that popped up when searching for a repair on this model. This must be a common issue.
I think it a common prob Aaron
Thank you so much for your help. I bough the part on Ebay. Quick installation less then 30 minutes. My machine looks the same, Buy the part has a différent number.
I have the same dryer my timer went im waiting for the replacement now This video helped a ton !
Great. They are just not as solid as they should be. Thanks Jon
EXCELLENT video! Thank you so much for this as it is such a great help.
This was super helpful and easy to follow! Thank you thank you thank you!
You just saved me tonight. Thanks so much!!
Awesome video sir, thanks for sharing.
Excellent video!
Super helpful. Thanks so much.
Thanks for the video my knob was cracked.
Yes, just a few poor quality parts which seems unnecessary perhaps even purposeful
I just changed the dryer part myself and it was super easy thanks to your video. Is it normal that once you turn the dryer on it smell like something is burning?
THANKS so much for this!
Excellent video well done
thanks cosmic!
Thanks for the info
You just saved my life lol😂. Thank you for this!!!
Hi your control board on the dryer that you’re working on looks like mine. We took the wires off not realizing all we had to do is take the knobs off. I really just need some pics of what it should look like. We took notes but they aren’t good enough or rather not accurate enough
Thanks for the video, I have a similar problem that it was hard to turn and I forced it now it doesn't advance time and just constantly runs. How did you find the part number to get the replacement, I can't seem to locate anything on the GE appliance website. My dryer looks just like yours.
My brand new dryer has this problem. It better be covered under the warranty!
you could have pulled the other 2 outer screws from the ends white panel that the metal back is attached too then slide the whole thing back , the flip it forward and lay it down on top of dryer , and you will have lots of room to work , all in the open easier than working from the back at the angle it is , just my 2 cents , I would put old switch in and the change wires one by one as not to get confused , good job
Thanks Bruce
Anybody know why the timer is seizing up in the first place?
If you remove the 2 screws on white panel holding all switches, you can have better access to the timer without having to work from behind
Gold star for you. Your tip made all the difference in getting this done.
This was a lifesaver, only problem I had with all of this was that there was no warning to unplug the dryer before starting. Completely electrocuted myself cartoon style full body in the air. Honestly lucky it wasn’t worse
Oh man you just made this project doable~thanks for sharing
Don't tell him
Will it matter if I didn't put that Torx screw back in? I couldn't get it back in and damn near had to rip it out with plyers cause it was stuck. The timer does not really move without it
Is there any way to install a different timer that's not prone to failure? My GE dryer looks beautiful but it's only 5 years old and failed with these timers that are known to be crap! I have a 25 year old Frigidaire that works and with a timer still operating smoothly, but the machine looks ancient.
Hi!
When I replace the timer, does the knob just pull out? Thanks.
I have the same exact dryer with the exact issue. Is it possible to list the parts that need to ordered?
Do you just pull the wires until they come off? Or do you need to do some other thing?
My dryer is gas model #GTD45GASJ2WS. Is replacement repair same as you have shown?
Great video. Does anybody know if it’s OK to turn the timer knob clockwise and counterclockwise to set it?
I was asking the same question after replacing my part yesterday thinking this may have caused the issue.
Thank you for the video. I fix my own Girl Power yesssssssss .
You go girl!
Help just boutght this new Model #: GTD42EASJWW and the center dial knob is very hard to tutn. Is that normal? Do I always have to turn clockwise?
Do you think it would be a good idea to oil these things when they start to stiffen up? I'm on my 2nd timer and after 3 months it's already beginning to do what the one I replaced did!
I feel just changing the knob might just be a temporary fix. GE is known for this. Not sure why the timers get stiff. I suspect the timer motor and or wear in the cams and vertical shafts in some of them.
I have also noticed timer motor that get hot.
I have replace this timer 3 times in 1 week. what will keep the timer to locking up. How do i prevent it
I have the exact problem , I called a repair man who glued it together charged me 200 dollars canadian. After one use its broke again, so we will fix it, I just hope that I can find these parts, not sure where to go Ill try home depot and leons
You wouldn't have part # for timer and knob?
I had the same thing happen to my dryer at work, do you know what actually causes those gears to bind up? I can't find anything online, I know I have to order a new timer assembly but was curious as to the cause.
I have no idea other than I assume they are made of sub-standard plastic. Thanks for the comment
I noticed a timer motor getting hot once. I felt like the heat transferred through the stem and caused the knob to crack.
Ordered a new timer and knob for lady.
It did not last very long until the knob cracked again.
Use your cell phone and take several images of the wiring before disconnecting. You have a 110v dryer?
I think he pulled the plug for the washer. Lol
I have a 110V gas dryer. Don't know if is uncommon in the US or Canada?
These buttons are definitly made to break after a while. They even make the shafts unaccessible with pincers so you can't make it work. Programmed to be replaced.
Donde compro el boton
I replaced the timer and got a new knob but it still won’t turn. I can turn it with pliers but it’s very hard to do. Any idea what else might be wrong ?
Sorry Scud, nothing comes to mind.
The new one you bought it was bad, you need refund the money and order a new one....I almost sure that was happened.... good luck.
Same thing for me, the new timer is still hard to turn and won't work, still haven't found a fix ?
I clicked like just because that robot told me to.
Got a dryer like that six months ago and the pos doesn't work already because of that garbage part.
Next time I’m gonna buy a Speed Queen
I actually did end up replacing mine a year or two after this video. I can't recall what finally did it in but I remember it was totally toast.
This is what's happening to mineeeeee
client timer switch knob plastic was cracked ( FIX)
Unbelievable. Obviously a defective design that should have been recalled. Arghhh
How many years it take to failer
between 7 and 10 years.
For me only 21 months
I'm the same prob 2 yrs. It's a crap Dryer
just over a year
I think he must have pulled the wrong plug out. The 3 prong 120 plug is for the washer.
The dryer plug is 240. Careful kids...
