I gave you a thumbs up b/c I can now vent to someone (not your fault). This is probably the worst tech product I've ever purchased. Bought mine about a month and a half ago and now it's stopped working. Battery is dead. At least it will recharge, but the back of my keyboard does not look anything like yours. I can't even see the batteries underneath the screwplate. So I now have to look forward to recharging this thing periodically. Would've been nice if that could've been found in the sparse user instructions. I will stay away from this POS product in the future.
Yes, at some point they changed the design and switched from using internal AA NiMH batteries behind that plate to a sealed off design. But even in the model I show here, the batteries were not supposed to be user replaceable. That's why the screw was in place and the manual said the batteries were not replaceable. I've used different logitech keyboards and mice for years. Some of them had internal rechargeable batteries. Others used disposable batteries. The ones that used rechargeable batteries were never "user replaceable" in the sense that you could buy a replacement battery from Logitech. It was always some weird rectangular battery you could change if you removed a bunch of screws and ordered a battery on eBay or some other website.
Logitech claims that the keyboard provides 10 days of use before needing a charge. I've found mine have lasted a month or more without needing a charge. The batteries in mine lasted at least five years before I needed to replace them. I bought three of these keyboards about ten years ago. One for the office, two for two different computers at home. Two of them are still in use. I dropped one on concrete floor and broke a couple of keys.
What I have found is that some people like keyboards and mice with disposable batteries they can change, others like rechargeable batteries. Most companies that make products with internal rechargeable batteries have moved to a sealed design. People will claim that the sealed design is "planned obsolesce". But I know for a fact, that people using counterfeit or inferior replacement batteries is a safety and liability issue. Likely both are true.
I personally prefer rechargeable products, I can hang the cable off my computer to charge the product as needed, and get back to work without worrying if there are enough AA or AAA batteries somewhere in a drawer or the supply cabinet at the office. For my K800s I keep the cable plugged into a monitor and charge as needed. The USB cable doubles as a wired connection to the computer as well.
Other people are opposed to non replaceable batteries, even in a world where all cellphones have forced this on everyone.
I loved my K800s for years and I like Logitech products. Today I use a Logitech MX Keys keyboard and MX Anywhere 3 mouse. Both internal rechargeable batteries. They work well with my Mac over Bluetooth, and can be used with multiple computers at a push of a button. A long response I know, but rarely do I ever encounter a commenter that is angry but still leaves a like, and points out "its not my fault".
@@Tech128 how can I get into the later model? I don't need to crack it open yet, just bought one. But I'd like to be able to get in and replace the battery, whenever it goes. Hopefully that will be some time. There aren't any other screws, and I don't have a spudger handy, didn't know if you had actually opened up one of the later ones or not. I don't wanna break this one, since it's brand new and working fine just to find out. Would be good to have that peace of mind that I can, when that day comes, without destroying it in the process. I can always find a pouch cell or something to fit whatever they used, just gotta be able to get at it. Works great so far, of course, it is only the first day...
@@salvadordollyparton666 I don't know. I don't have one. The user manual had instructions for removing the battery for recycling.
Bought one new; about 6-7 months ago. Now both the mouse and keyboard are hanging intermittently; it is a brief hang, but the sensor is only about 4-5 feet away, and both devices are fully charged. I won't buy another from this brand, but will keep this as a spare - this video may come in handy.
I appreciate people that put forth the effort to make instructional videos like this! I don't think I will buy any device that is NOT user serviceable. The previous keyboard I had was the same brand, but you COULD replace the batteries; I always use my own rechargeable batteries in all the devices I own.
I suspect the non-replaceable electronics are less likely to get recycled safely, too.
@@mr_mack_indenver7807 What remote keyboard to you recommend then?
THANK YOU!!! This is my second K800 Logitech keyboard (I spilled coffee on the first one - good grief!). I have been typing for over 40 years, and this is by far the best keyboard I've EVER owned. It is pricey, but well worth it. I had no idea what the flashing red light meant when it suddenly appeared, but once I understood it indicated the rechargeable batteries were toast, I Googled how to replace the batteries and found your video - awesome tutorial! Typed this comment with my keyboard back up and running. YAY!! :) Thanks again.
Thank you, I've been using mine for nearly 9 years and only recently started experiencing battery charging issues. It's good to know that I can extend its life even further.
well, if I get 9 years out of my first battery I guess I'll be happy, because they have obviously relocated the batteries to not be accessible. :-(
Thank you! My keyboard has been harder and harder to charge. It is my most favorite keyboard ever, and when I checked replacement costs I was not happy. I like that its lit and the numbers have their own area, it make working with numbers (that I can see) so much easier.
I got this keyboard eight years ago and the flashing red light came on today. I'm glad this was so easy to do. It's a great keyboard that just WORKS. It lights up, and it doesn't make loud clickity clack noises.
You have a great video. I have this keyboard and I really like it. Sadly, I had to replace it with a different model as the MK800 is temporarily out of stock at Logetic. That said, I removed what appears as the battery cover as shown in your video, and all I get is a solid piece of plastic with a screw, that when removed, does nothing. So, now the question is: Why have the that cover? lol
I bought mine around 2018 and instead of batteries there was just more white plastic under it. Anyone else figure a way to get to the batteries in newer ones?
Thanks! Just "fixed" my favorite keyboard. Was sure I'll need to replace it, but even that is now impossible. Have been using my for years. Now, hopefully, will use it even longer.
Thanks for the info! I just replaced my batteries. One note, my keyboard's original batteries were Eneloop. I use Eneloop Pros for my photography gear and they work great so far.
Great Job. You made the process seem very simple and your dialogue was very understandable.
Hi there. I have this same but the wired version, think it's K740. I take using it from 2011 and I love it, it works flawlessly but I notice the backlightis weaker in the most used keys compared to the others. I recently replaced it's leds panel for another almost new one (taken from another from the same model spare keyboard I had) and clean it with a vacuum machine, but the issue with the weaker lighness in those mentioned keys is still there. Any idea of whst could causing this?
Thank you so much for this great video. Was able to find the replacement eneloop 2000 mah battery for $13 on Amazon instead of having to replace my entire keyboard. Worked like a charm. THANKS AGAIN!
Excellent video, very informative, you saved my keyboard man!
actually, I used a external Ni-Mh battery charger on the 2 "dead" batteries for 5 minutes, then put them back into the keyboard, and it revive it!
My guess is that I let the battery discharge too much (I was in vacation for quite a long time), and when I came back, the batteries were depleted enough for the safety feature of the keyboard charging circuit to trigger. apparently, my external charger was a little bit more tolerant, and it gave the juice necessary to revive the batteries.
So it cost me 0!
thank you @grobenn25 for this comment! I had the same issue, and after reading your comment I gave it a try, and it worked!!
my keyboard is alive again :D
Dude, this worked for me too! Thank you so much!!!
its funny that I just got the keyboard and the batteries were dead. Glad I searched around for the issue. I have to say I am immensely happy that you can use standard batteries for replacements. I've been pretty happy with logitec before. But I was stunned that the battery wasn't propriety. I'm very pleased companies do that unlike some that make their own jacks or SD cards.
glad this helped then. Sad to hear the batteries were dead in a new keyboard. Logitech has been selling this model for over 4 years now. Wonder if you got one from old stock or just a bad set of batteries.
At least I had some rechargeable ones around. :) thanks for the video
Thank you. Been out of the office for two years and now my keyboad is dead. The replacement is horrible, so I am very pleased that for a couple of batteries there is still hope for my well worn K800.
My K800 Logitech wireless keyboard battery compartment is much different then the one you show. Mine (I should say, both of mine) have another cover under the black top cover. There is another screw, but it alone does not allow for removal, probably without removing the entire back panel.
But that is not my problem. Both of my K800s will charge, and hold a charge. However, the keys themselves are completely unresponsive. Can you point me to a support site that addresses this issue?
I really found your video on battery replacement helpful. Thank you for posting this. My battery light flashes in a slow blinking mode. It's been awhile since I used this keyboard and I dont remember how to connect to my laptop. I was wondering if the flashing red near the battery indicator warning me that my battery is low. I no longer have the manual.
Thanks for the video! Down to one green bar and now I know what batteries to buy and how to change them.
Thank you! Very useful help. Using mine for 9+years and, first time with this charging/batteries issue,
Luckely I have the old model. What mAh do the battery need to have? Can only gather from the video it need AA NiMH batteries but not the level of mAh. This is by far my favorit keyboard and it would be great to be able to rescue it
Checking in for 2024 to thank you for the video. Still the greatest keyboard made by Logitech.
Thanks man! Now I can keep my favorite keyboard!
God Bless you!!! This vid was extremely helpful!!! Thank you!!!
I have this keyboard and took the back panel off but there were no batteries and nowhere to put new ones... but you video was helpful in the sense that now i know i can charge the keyboard.
Hi Lydia. I have been told that with the newer models the batteries are not behind that back cover anymore. My guess is you would need to remove additional screws.
But yes, the keyboard is rechargeable. I got years of use out of mine before I had to replace the batteries. Someone should have a video about changing the batteries in the newer models by that time.
I have this keyboard without user changeable batteries. You really have to disassemble the device completely to get to the battery. It is a 3,7 V, 1500 mAh LiPo battery with a seemingly proprietary form factor.
@@frankyFM This is a great comment, thanks! I have a newer model K800 too. Did you find any differences about the disassembly from the older and the newer models? All disassemble videos that I can find on the internet are to the old model.
@@scotthuang8689 I disassembled it without using any video. So of course I ended up breaking a lot of clips, but since this device is mostly held together with screws and tons of double sided adhesive tape, (yay, premium!) this is not much of a disadvantage.
Once the battery becomes exhausted and cannot hold charge the keyboard is useless as intended and described by Logitech. A piece of junk. The batteries cannot be replaced and Logitech have made sure of that. I would not buy but look for another brand.
year 2024: I got a "new" K800. the keys are much more loose and make more noise than the old one. also my batteries comparment doesn't look like shown in the video any more. My old one definitely yes, but not the new one: compartment is just closed, no way to change the batteries. Is this a fake keyboard or just simple another version without th possibility to change Batteries?
Thank you for the information. It helped me alot. Been wanting to get my keyboard working again for a while now.
May no longer apply: Logitech apparently realized that sales were slipping and found out that users were replacing the batteries. SO they moved to a hardwired, proprietary battery DEEP INSIDE the keyboard! I removed the plate and... this K800 has nothing there but white plastic! There's a second screw under there, but that's it. Replacing the battery will now require a new battery and complete disassembly of the keyboard. Classless move, Logitech.
Yes, so true. I found this video as my Logitec K800 doesn't seem to be holding a charge lately. I started researching to see if I could replace battery. I took the back apart to look for batteries and like you said just white plastic. I guess I will just have to replace it at some point. Thanks for substantiating my discovery.
It was the rechargeable batteries that had died. I thought the keyboard had passed its use by date. Replaced batteries and , “ EUREKA ! “ it’s working again. Thanks for the video.
Will any brand of charger work? Or must I buy a Duracell or Energizer charger? I have an EnLoop brand charger I'd like to use instead. great video thank you.
I assume you mean any brand rechargeable batteries? I mentioned the ones I used because they worked and I specifically tried them. Over all the time this video has been post people have used many different brands rechargeable batteries and have not reported any problem including enloop.
Mine came with Eneloop installed, just replaced them with Duracell. So yes, I've been using Eneloop for at least 2 years with no issues.
Thanks for the video. Just a quick note....I was out of town for 10 days and returned to the dreaded red light. Keyboard still functions(ed) if plugged into USB (while charging). I removed the batteries and the keyboard will not function even when plugged into USB once batts are removed. I placed the batts in my Nitecore external charger....but realized that batteries must be installed to work....so within 5 minutes returned the batts. I figured I would charge later overnight after work. Well...once reinstalled and after only 5 minutes in the Nitecore....the green charging indicators on the keyboard are functioning normally. Batts are nearing the end...but the Nitecore gave them a quick revive. YMMV
Thank you!!! I was just about to buy a new wireless keyboard!! Fixed this one right up. Awesome
My keyboard has been working fine. We had a power outage last night and when I went to my computer this am, it was turned on (I had shutdown last night). Now my keyboard will not work, the laptop keyboard is fine, my speaker setup is all messed up, etc. However, I need to get the keyboard working. The battery is fine. I moved the dongle to another usb port and that made no difference. the dongle is about 20 inches from the keyboard. Any ideas on how to get the computer to see the keyboard again?
I just bought one of these about five months ago which is July of 2021 and I don't have access to the batteries like you do I think I have to take it all apart to get to the batteries which I haven't done yet but I know that I don't have access to the batteries like yours does and I have the same keyboard. It's almost as if they saw how easy it was to replace the batteries in yours so they made it more difficult to get to in mine
there are some long discussions in the comments about all of this. I suggest you read through them.
So, my original K800 (using it now) has the replaceable AA batteries; only changed once after a huge amount of work by myself and the rest of family; i had trouble (dexterity) replacing a couple of keys so bought the second one. The second K800 does not have the two VISIBLE batteries. Recharge the same way but I can't see where to dig them out. Logitech likely made the change so that they could sell more replacement units. Now this one needs a shift key replaced which is why I dug the old unit out. Got to try to recall where I ordered the new keys from. Will get it done.
I've had my K800 for 4 plus years. I enjoy my Logitech products. Use a thumb ball cordless mouse for years. I can clean it and easily change batteries. The K800 has been requiring a charge more often and I'm leaving it tethered to it's power cord. (Mini-HDMI.) BTW.
My question is, how does a person change the battery pack in this model? Thanks for the videos.
I have two. one is 10 years old, the other is 8. I have replaced the batteries in both about 4 years ago. I used Rayovac reachable batteries. Worked flawlessly.
Thanks for that, you just saved me a keyboard replacement.
Great Vid! I have and LOVE this keyboard i think since 89 this is the best keyboard ive owned, thnx! for, "SHOW IN TELL" in how to replace batteries.
Hi... Thanks for doing this... Hoped the battery would be changable but glad to verify... I am seriously considering getting one... Also good to know you've had yours for a good while and it works good... Getting ready to go deep into editing video and such and need to see keyboard keys in a darker rom for shortcuts... thanks again...
If you read through the comments a number of people have noted that newer versions of the k800 are different and the batteries can’t be changed the same way. In 2020 I’m using a Logitech mx keys which I like better. I think you can find as video about it on my channel. My wife is currently using the k800 from this video
Thank You for this review! It definitely provided an informed decision for me. I'm buying one through Amazon.
So Nice. I have just changed batteries in my several years old keyboard. :) Thanks a bunch for the video.
Any recommendation for a back lit rechargeable keyboard that you can still change the rechargeable batteries in 2021?
Nope.
If non-replaceable batteries is a deal-breaker, I’d say go with a wired illuminated keyboard.
The days of replaceable batteries in rechargeable products have passed.
The latest version of the K800 manual has directions for removing the battery or recycling. Looks brutal.
No mention of replacing the battery. They are likely required to document how to recycle the battery.
The K800 is a great keyboard, but I currently use the Logitech MX keys. Supports three devices, bluetooth and unifying receiver, and has Apple keys for Mac and iOS.
I like the key feel better. When it comes time to replace the battery, I’ll figure out how.
Great!!! I am going to do the same on mine that is a couple of years old.
Thank you a lot.
Dude, this video from 5 years ago just saved my favorite keyboard!! This thing has lasted me FOREVER, and the lithium batteries finally crapped out - you should have seen the look on my face when you opened the back and showed me they are just basic bitch double AA batteries!!! So pleased. Thanks!!
You are welcome. I bought three of these in 2010 and two are still in use by my family. They still sell this keyboard 11 years later. (but is doesn't use AA batteries) .
@@Tech128 I didn't have any lithium type AA size batteries lying around, so I tried some regular ones, and they work great! I just have to remember not to charge it until my lithium batteries arrive. Thanks for the links.
@@ericsletmoen2818 You're right you can use any AA batteries in the older style units, so long as you don't plug in the USB cable because it'll start trying to charge non-rechargeable batteries. But don't put regular lithium AA batteries in this and try to charge it either - they're not rechargeable! This unit uses Ni-MH rechargeables. Mine came with Eneloop batteries but any Ni-MH AA's will do. (and if you *are* talking about the very rare rechargeable AA's that are lithium based, they have special circuitry in them and require special chargers - this keyboard is only designed to charge Ni-MH).
@@chocolate_squiggle thanks! I bought the ones listed in the video. 😁
Nicely presented. Solves the flashing red led problem. Thanks
I have this keyboard for over 8 years now i think. battery still good and never ever had any problem with it. sometimes keys klog up with some dirt but nothing a vacuum or compressed air cant fix.
After watching this video, I purchased a used K800 on eBay described as "Batteries NOT included" since now I knew how to buy and put them in myself. When I opened the back of the keyboard to put the batteries in like you showed all I saw was white plastic instead of two empty slots for batteries. Why is this? The merchant told me there's an older and a newer version of the keyboard.
Yes that’s true and it’s been discussed in the comments here and my article on tech128.com
Hi, I used AA energizer but its not working. Do i have to used the same brand as yours? Please reply thank you
The K800 uses rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH or Ni-MH) batteries. I recommended the ones I used because I they worked for me.
Other viewers have used all sorts of other brands and no one has reported a problem.
Do not use n0n-rechargeable alkaline batteries. That would be dangerous, if someone plugs the keyboard in.
If you used NiMH or Ni-MH) batteries, make sure the batteries are charged fully, using an external charger. You can also try removing and reseating the batteries. Double check that they were inserted correctly.
@@Tech128 ohh okay I'm gonna try it... but incase it still did not work does it mean I cannot use it anymore?
@@ruffaandreajimena7233
The problem I made the video about is the batteries being dead and you get a red flashing light when you plug it in to charge them.
If after all this, it still doesn't turn on and give you a green light, or the batteries don't charge it may be time for a new keyboard.
You could try removing the batteries and leaving the leyboard plugged into the computer all the time. You may find that works.
@@Tech128 ooh is that soo. I'm gonna try it tomorrow. Hope it works. You'rr a great help. Thank you so much!😊
@@Tech128 ooh is that soo. I'm gonna try it tomorrow. Hope it works. You'rr a great help. Thank you so much!😊
nice. I've been using the K520 which is basically the same keyboard but without the backlight, and it uses non-rechargeable AA batteries. I've been shopping for a new keyboard because I want a backlight, and I almost went with their new "mx keys" model because I love how sleek and high-quality it is, but I just hate the fact that it uses a non-replaceable lipo battery. I mean that can technically be replaced too but it's a huge PITA, I want to be able to just do a quick and simple swap of some rechargeable AAs like you showed here. I wish I could get the mx keys quality with the K800 battery style
Ok. Don’t assume that the batteries in the new model k800s will be replaceable AA batteries 🔋, if you read through the comments here you’ll see that many people are saying when you remove that cover an the back there is nothing behind it.
They changed the internet design at some point to not use AA batteries
I had three of these from between 2010 and 2011 an I was able to replace the batteries in all.
Two of my keyboards are still in use today.
My main keyboard however is an MX keys. Bluetooth and unifying receiver pairs with three devices, has Mac specific keys. And yes very nice build.
I deal with the battery issue when the time comes we will see how long it lasts
Thanks for your video, I been trying to replace the original battery that came with the keyboard. My batteries wore out and no longer work.
I left mine charging like that, thinking it would charge up, i gotta pick myself up some batteries like that and replace them asap. Thanks for the tip 👌🏽
give it a try. I have three and have updated all the batteries.
I have to replace mine also. Logitech sent me a new keyboard because I was still under warranty instead of telling me what replacement batteries to use.. They said I would void the warranty if I opened the back or replaced the batteries, so they sent me a new key board. Cool right.? My KB has Panasonic eneloop BK-3MCCW 1.2v/1.2v min1900 mAh in it. Can you send me the right info to replace these with the right eneloop battery? I cant find any of the BK-3MCCW batteries. Please send me what ever batteries are compatible with this K800. Thanks.
Apparently the newer model K800's do not have batteries behind the plate like in my video. The older ones do. As for replacement batteries for the keyboards that do have AAs that you can replace I have some links in the description. Also take a look through the video comments as some other readers have recommended batteries too.
I did the replacement with the Lithium Duracells and they barley stay charged. The keyboard works but the battery life before a charge is severely degraded.
Thanks, I first thought there was a fixed battery in the keyboard. The fact that there are now simply two rechargeable batteries makes it even easier. The new batteries are already ordered and on their way.
what happens if there are NO rechargeable batteries.
@@sueawend8545 you can't load them with a USB cable and if trying, you can break your keyboard as far as I know.
So, there seems to be another (newer?) version of the K800, which I seem to have, with the product number Y-R0065, which is completely different in regard of the battery, and I gotta rage about it somewhere. So prepare for the ride.
The battery of my keyboard started to die very quickly, so I wanted to replace it. I had already seen the battery service hatch and thought I was in for a quick battery swap. Boy was I wrong. Behind the black battery plastic cover: Only more, white plastic, no battery. Weird. I looked it up and found this video, where there are batteries behind the cover. Even weirder.
So I started getting curious and taking the keyboard apart. What I found was shocking: You have to disassemble the WHOLE keyboard to get to the battery. Not just the back cover, which is already badly held in place with glue and clips, no, the whole thing: Two layers of screwed, clipped AND glued backcovers, the clipped and glued front cover, the layer with the keyboard buttons, the backlight and even the logic board. After prying it open under constant swearing and breaking some of the finicky clips, I was then greeted with a 1500mAh LiPo battery, glued in place with the really strong kind of double sided tape, so that you have to be very careful to not damage it and risk burning your house down with it while removing. The best part: The position was exactly where the battery service hatch would normally lead! Of course, just to make it worse, they glued it down on the label side, so you have to remove it to even read the label.
Not to mention that I was not able to find this exact battery as a spare part, however the one from the Logitech Craft seems to fit, but is only 1200mAh. I haven't tested it yet though.
I can only guess what Logitech tried to achieve by making the reparability so much worse compared to the older model. They probably tried to reduce production costs by making the K800 more similar to the Craft internally and, maybe, they noticed they don't want people to just change the battery of their keyboard, they want them to buy a new keyboard, which would be an absolute disgrace. I am most enraged about the fact that they left the service hatch there like nothing happened. I actually had the older version of the K800 before and saw how easy it would be to replace the batteries, which was a reason for me to buy the same keyboard again after the first one died from liquid damage.
My view of Logitech's reputation has certainly dropped heavily after this mess, this is bad design on all layers. My next keyboard will be from another brand.
Found same.....
Great keyboards. I have two and have to say they're the best I've ever owned. The battery situation is a real head scratcher, though. What the heck is with that rigid plastic over the one battery?
Like many Logitech products, the k800 batteries were not meant to be user replaced. Newer versions of the keyboard are sealed under that cover. I just bought the new mx keys keyboard to replace my k800. Look for a review soon
Note that the newer model K800 doesn't use rechargeable AA batteries at all. I opened my keyboard's "battery compartment" and was met with a plastic wall, no place for AA batteries. I partially disassembled the keyboard to find that there is a long gold-colored battery that is soldered in place where the spots for AA batteries used to be. And this really sucks because the new battery will only hold a charge for a few days, while the older AA batteries would keep their charge for months and were replaceable with any AA batteries.
Yes. I have been told that and it was discussed in the comments. Did your batteries die or did you just decide to check? I haven't looked at the newer model, my older one doesn't have any other screws on it to take it apart. I suspect it could be pried open with some plastic tools. According to the user manual the batteries in the older K800 aren't user replaceable either.
Confirming this on 2 different keyboards I bought last month. Solid plastic panel with a tiny hole but doesn't appear to have a screw in there. Really a bummer, hope the battery will last a while.
so what did you do? I got mine in the mail today, but the battery status light is up to 3 bars, so it seems to be charged. But when I unplug it, the keyboard doesn't work. I would assume that the keyboard is supposed to work even when it's not plugged in - I meant that is the WHOLE point of a wireless keyboard, right?
In the box, however, it did say it should take about about 5 hours to fully recharge. Should I just wait the 5 hours? I've been trying to fix this for like 3-4 hours
I think I just bought the same keyboard. Mine is labeled KB Logitech K800 R. I love the keyboard. It is SO quiet. I've been using it now for two days and already the battery needs recharging. After seeing the above video, I tried to take mine apart but as IronTeddyBear noted, under the black cover is another white plastic covering with a screw but removing that screw releases nothing. I decided not to try to disassemble it after I read your comments. So now I'm wondering how long the built in battery will last and if I need to recharge the battery every two days!! That seems excessive to me.
Questions: How will I know once the battery is fully charged? Also, I bought this back lit keyboard because I tend to wear off the painted on letters on all my keyboards. I can't tell if the letters on this keyboard are on the top surface of the keys or on the underside of the keys. Since some of you have had these keyboards for a long time, have any of you had problems wearing off the key top letters? Finally, can anyone tell me if there is a user guide for this model of keyboard? I'd like to take a look at it.
Can you tell what kind of battery it is? Any identifying code on them?
I'm no stranger to soldering, I'm a heavy keyboard user and I don't plan on buying a "disposable" keyboard. If I can easily find a similar battery the rest of the keyboard fits my needs.
Thanks for sharing this basic bit of useful knowledge.. I am subscribing to you for more helpful tips in the future.
Hello
Thank you , for showing how to do the battery swap.
I saw you had some kind of skin on your keyboard, could you please post a link where we can get it ?
Again thanks in advance.
Hi there isn’t a skin on the keyboard. You may be seeing the original plastic wrap around the trim. It was like having a skin so I left it on
My battery on K800 doesn't last more than 7 days...Is there a auto shut off feature in this board ?
I've been replacing the batteries this way every time they run out... I didn't even realize you could plug it in! hahaha
I could totally see that someone wouldn't know it was rechargeable. My butteries last for years. just don't plug it in unless you have rechargeables in the keyboard.
I was expecting to have to use regular aa batteries. Was a very nice surprise, and a but of a problem, to find there was nothing behind that plate in mine. Going to make replacement more difficult when the time comes...
Thank you my friend, you just saved me from having to buy a new one.
thank you , had mine about 3 years and have to recharge more often, saved me from buying a new one
2022 and I’m still using mine love it
Thanks, my keyboard is around 4-5 years old and looses charge in a week now. I will get some new batteries, thanks for sharing ;)
Glad it helped. I think Logitech never expected these keyboards to be so popular and last so long. Heck they still sell them after all this time.
One thing to mention is to not use regular batteries if you intend to plug the keyboard in with the wire. Only specifically use rechargeable batteries.
How can I get the unifying receiver because I do'n't have one.
You can buy the receiver from Amazon here amzn.to/37gqwzw You can also consider buying a Logitech wireless mouse that comes with a unifying receiver and both the K800 and the new mouse could use that receiver. I think the new mouse option is better than spending $13 on just a new receiver. I like the MX anywhere mice but you could find a much less expensive Logitech mouse than uses it.
Thanks so much for sharing this, most helpful
This was really a big help. Thank you. Very clear.
I did try fully recharged Ni-mh batteries in mine but it still doesn't work? Must they be at least 2000mah?
I don’t recall what mine were, Lower should work just not last as long. I’d try removing them double check the orientation and reseating them.
@@Tech128 I did all that you said but still doesn't work. Currently charging ones that are 2000mah while I'm at work so I'll check again when back home!
@@Tech128 Ok now here's the situation. When I plug the USB cord I get a flashing red light, which leads me to believe that there's no problem with the keyboard per se, just the batteries. But when I "correctly" insert 2000mah ni-mh fully recharged batteries, it still refuses to light up, therefore still doesn't work. What would be your conclusion then?
@@MoiFidodido1966 I inserted the batteries incorrectly in mine once so I always remind people to check that.
I don't know what the problem is. I'd check the terminals inside the keyboard to make sure they are clean, and not showing any signs of corrosion. If they do, clean with isopropyl alcohol and a qtip. A pencil erase might work too.
@@Tech128 OK I will try that thanks! 😊
Great viewo but I took off the black cover and -- NO BATTERIES! Just another another panel with a screw, which appears to hold the top and bottom of the keyboard together. Gotta look elsewhere for what to do now.
hm...you said that we must get duracell rechargable batteries? only them or it doesnt matter which rechargable batteries we use?
Well, those were the ones that I used. I know other people watching are using other brands, but I haven't. No one has left a comment saying other brands don't work. I chose a reputable brand. I suppose you could also try another brand of rechargeable NiMH AA batteries.
Newer model k800 do not use AA batteries and when you remove it he cover you will not be able to Change the batteries without fully disassembling the keyboard.
Read though the comments here and on my article on tech128.com. One commenter shared how he changed batteries in the sealed unit model.
my K800 does not have batteries that I can see when I remove the back?
Logitech changed the design sometime over the last 8 years or so. , Your keyboard still has a rechargable battery it just can't be accessed from behind that plate.it took at least 4 years before I needed to change my batteries though. I don't have a newer model. So I don't know how to take it apart to replace the batteries.
Typing on this same keyboard, just bought it yesterday, March 19, 2021!
Nice 👍🏻
Nice keyboard, would like to see an updated version of it.
I'd love to see an update too. I would like it to get multi computer support, bluetooth in additonal to universal receiver support, and mac key remapping. It would be nice to add a place to store the USB receiver when not in use. the K810 has a lot of features but the keyboard isn't as good.
What about a K800 keyboard that does NOT appear to have replaceable batteries? I remove the black cover and there are NO visible batteries.
Maybe read through the comments on the video as it'd been discussed at length.
@@Tech128 165 comments and I'm expected to examine each to find out why my K800 (purchased in May 2015) is different than the topic of your vid? Good luck with that. Folks may not be inclined to scroll down once they see that their K800 is different. Perhaps it would be helpful to Pin a comment to the top that Logitech transitioned to non-replaceable batteries at some point. Damned if I know when that was. Tech support did offer me a discount coupon to purchase a new version. Not sure if it'll work elsewhere or ONLY at Logitech's store.
Can you buy other batteries?
I recommended the batteries I tried. Other people have used other brands and no one has reported a problem. I’d say just make sure to use the same type of rechargeable as the original eni time
Super thanks. Saved me a new keyboard!
Really informative and useful, thank you.
HELP! My K800 keyboard went kaput! And, of course, Logitech no longer makes this keyboard. Has anyone found a similar replacement keyboard? I absolutely love the feel of the keys of the K800 and like that it is very quiet. I do not use the backlit capability, so that is not a requirement for my new one. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated!!!
2019 model just has a white wall. Not sure where the screws are. The batteries are not in the same place, also Logitech K800 wireless keyboard.
A number of people have reported the same thing in the comments below. Another commenter reported buying a new one and getting on with as batteries. I'd think it would take years before your batteries no longer charge though.
@@Tech128 the charge does not last as long, and it complains more often. since they are not lithium batteries, they may also be prone to additional wear. when it comes to it, i may attempt to pur new hardware in a broken keyboard
@@CapricanDRJ One of the benefits of these keyboards for me was that I could go for weeks or months without needing to recharge the batteries and that the original batteries would take a charge for years.
If you have a problem with one purchased in 2019, I'd see if its covered under warranty.
Someone else may have a video about how to. replace the battery in your model. Lot's of people pull part Logitech mice and other products to replace batteries that aren't easily assessable.
Thank you for this video you are a great helper! Will use Eneloops on mine. Good Day!
I have been looking for a decent, low-cost, travel ready wireless keyboard with backlight, but the battery issue was a concern. By showing us the K800 simply uses rechargeable AA batteries, that pretty much seals the deal.
Warning. The newer K800 models do NOT use AA batteries. Also, consider the size of the keyboard and that newer models support Bluetooth and often can pair with phones, tablets, and laptops
@@Tech128 Well, that sucks, because I just ordered it. I guess I will find out when it gets here on Friday.
@@Tech128 Well, I got lucky. The K800 just arrived and it does have the AA battery configuration.
@@gulskjegg-x Ok. You removed the cover to check? Others have told me the cover with the screw is still there but you remove the plate and there is more plastic behind it.
@@Tech128 No, took the cover off and saw the white AA batteries, and the thin plastic cover to the right. Just as you showed in your great video. Sad to report, the K800 does not work on our Roku smart TV.
Thank u for the vid. But the enytime/eneloop bateries are much better, cause they do not loose charge over time if not used. Just google for eneloop :). I cant access my batteries either, theres white plastic over it.
thanks for the comments. Some viewers have been using Enerloops. I haven't noticed that mine lose charge. I have some enerloop pros maybe I'll try them too. My K800's are pretty old, supposedly the newer versions still have the door and screw but the case has been redesigned so that the batteries are no longer accessible. You'd have to disassemble the keyboard to see what they currently use for batteries. I know for some logitech mice you need to pry them open to get inside.
@@Tech128 Thx! 1 viewer somewhere did write that he opened his k800 and found a soldered in accumulator battery.
Very nice quality video too.
Funny thing about those "unifying" receivers; They rarely seem to work with anything else other than the device they came with. I've got like 4-5 of those things, a couple came with things I bought and some I found in the trash and I've never been able to get any of them to work with other Logitech wireless devices.
Really....I've never had that problem. I even have a few that I found on recycled PCs and they would with the different devices I have. Have you found other people saying the same?
I never really looked into it. Maybe some of the receivers I have aren't "unifying"? They all look the same. I know at least one of them is good for sure, because it came with a cheap mouse that I bought. I found a few others in the trash, but none of them worked with my mouse. I've also found Logitech wireless mice and keyboards in the trash and none of them ever worked with my known good receiver or any of the others I tried.
BTW, when I say "trash", I'm referring to this area's biannual bulk trash pickup, where the city will haul away almost anything you put on the curb and people use it as an opportunity to clean out their closets, cabinets, basements, etc. You'd be tempted to say that if they were in the trash, they were probably no good, but most of the computer stuff I've gotten this way works fine. Any wireless mice that had the receivers (like 1 out of 20) all worked, all the wired mice and keyboards work, etc. So I have no reason to believe that they were all defective. People throw out perfectly fine stuff all the time. I once found an absolutely mint condition portable DVD player, in the box with all the accessories and even the battery in the remote was still good. Just yesterday I found a complete computer. It's relatively old and considered obsolete now, but there was nothing wrong with it.
Yes. The unifying and nonunifying receivers do look the same except the unifying ones should have a little orange star like logo as seen on this page support.logitech.com/en_us/software/unifying
@@Tech128By the way, the unifying receivers do have to be paired with the device you want to use them with. The come paired with the device you bought it with. If you want to use the mouse you bought, with the receiver that came with your keyboard, you need to pair it to that receiver. The instructions come with every device, and are on Logitech's site. BTW you can pair multiple devices to one receiver, but a device can only pair to one receiver. You can't use one keyboard on muiltiple PCs, each with a receiver, unless you repair them each time you switch.
@@svenjohannsen5884 That's true, you do need to run the software to pair them which I think is ok but sometimes inconvenient. Later keyboards and mice from Logitech can be paired with multiple devices including both Bluetooth and unifying. I use the MX Anywhere mice and I've paired them with multiple computers using a little switch on the bottom. I don't know if I've ever done with with two unifying receivers as I prefer bluetooth these days. Thanks for both comments! BTW did you buy one of the newer K800 keyboards?
That tape seems to serve no useful purpose (other than being annoying) - I simply got rid of it.
BTW, as a "quick fix", you can temporarily put regular 1.5V AA batteries (if you don't have any rechargeables laying around) in and it will work as well. Just remember NOT to charge it until you get and install proper rechargeable ones :)
Also, some people say that you can actually "bring back from the dead" the original recheargable batteries by charging them in an external charger. Gotta try this. Getting a new set is still a better idea, though (especially that original batteries have crappy capacity of just 2000MAh).
I just undusted my old K800 and wanted to use it with my smart TV - and of course, it gave me blinking red light.
I don't know what the tape or shielding is there for either. I left it in because heck how often to you replace the batteries in theses things. If I remember correctly, you can also use the keyboard with a usb cable while the batteries are dead.
Did you plug the receiver directly into the TV? I never thought to try that :-)
I took my cover off, and no batteries are visible, so this is obviously a very old video...please update it if you are still using K800 keyboards, because the newer ones are designed what? So they force you to purchase a new one???
This point has been discussed at length in the comments. Start by reading the pinned comment.
The "Back" and "Del" keys stopped working one week ago, I put regular batteries in the keyboard, dumb, did not know batteries were rechargeable. thanks.
Regular AA batteries will work but don't leave them in there and plug in the USB cable. You don't want the keyboard to try and charge them.
Mine doesn't have batteries to place...how do I do?
I don't know, but spend some time reading through the video comments as this has been discuseed.
Don't trust the flashing red LED, the battery might be revived with a separate NiMH charger. I got this one used and they had Eneloops in it and after charging it up with a regular wall charger it's been fine and will now charge via the micro USB port.
You should also tell people they can use up to 3000mAh-Batteries. Because not every chargable battery has the same amount.
good point
breh.... you just saved my azz, may da force be with ye !
I was able to get my NiMH batteries out of "coma" for the K800 to charge them again instead of giving me the blinking red light. Just shortly connect each NiMH battery with a good standard non-rechargeable AA battery in parallel. The voltage on my NiMH went from 0.73 to around 1V which allowed the K800 to charge again. Now my car's battery's dead and I can't open it coz I only have the electronic key but that's another story :)))
That was good thinking with the keyboard. Hope you get into the car🚗
I put mine batteries in a regular charger and they were fully charged, then returned them to keyboard and everything is fine now... will see for how long... my keyboard is 4 years old btw... i think i can get a few more years out of them...
I think someone else did the same. Recharged them externally and got them going again. Maybe try charging them in the keyboard before they completely run out of juice in the future. Good tip. Replacements are cheap enough but since you had the charger it was worth trying
I've had min 2-3 years now, original batteries. However, I leave it plugged into my dual monitor docking station all the time.
well it can be used wirh ordinary aa batteries
What Batteries ? I took that cover off and there isnt any batteries there just a black stop nowadays. My U buttom just for no reason now just sticking on by itself si i have to replace this keyboard again for the 3rd time, last one about 4 keys stopped working on it ..I think its made like that in the software so replace then every few years ... $270 AUD no thanks anymore
