    Hi Ron, I loved your video. I was trying to figure out how long a cable to order and you answered the question, you even through in a little humor. You also answered my question about why I can't find a helm that fits my old cable, it's obsolete.

    NOTE Correction: When measuring steering cables I instruct to add 15" to the plastic housing length, and round up to the next foot, THIS APPLIES TO ROTARY STEERING CABLES ONLY, for rack cables use 30" not 15" and round to the next foot. Sorry about that...RonT

    Good video, informative. But maybe mention that for rack cables you add 30".

    I recently started getting significant steering stiffness at medium and higher speeds on my 06 Malibu LX. The steering cable has never been changed. There’s a very small amount of fwd/aft play in the rudder. My question is how do I determine if I just need to change the steering cable or do some other work in the rear end?

    Hi Ron, thanks for the video, very helpful. Would your cheat sheet happen to include the length or type of throttle/ shift cable needed for a 91 four winns 190 freedom, stern drive.

      Sorry I don't have a cheat sheet for that make/model.

    Would anyone know how much play you can have in a new or already installed gear box itself. Meaning will a new box have any free play

    hi.Ron !! nice video! Can I change from Rack cable to another rotary cable system? I have a bayliner 18 ft ... cable is hard the wheel does not spin I must change it! but I wanted to know if I can change the system

    • @rontanis1024
      @rontanis1024  4 роки тому

      Yes but what happens when you drop the cable down from the helm, does the steering wheel spin easy when not connected the the cable?? if so the helm is not the problem & changing the helm will not fix your stiff steering.

    Might sound REALLY stupid, but do you round "up" or "down" to the nearest foot on the steering cable after you've measured the plastic housing and added the 18 inches???

    Thank for the video, for the steering cable if I measure A+B+C on my boat and it comes to be 12ft , so add 18" then round up to the next length, then I should buy 14 ft cable , is that right ?

      That method is good for new cable installations and cable routing under the deck, most ski boats rout the cable under the floor and take a longer route. What kind of boat is this and what kind of motor?

      @@rontanis1024 It is an old small fiberglass 13.7 ft boat, with 1991 yamaha motor 30 HP . I used to drive it from the back . Now I am thinking of putting a steering wheel kit

    My throttle cable came to 13'4" Will 13' work?

    • @rontanis1024
      @rontanis1024  Рік тому +1

      Depends on how tight it was run, if there appears to be some slack, then yes 13' would work but if it looks to be tight I would go up.

      @rontanis1024 I'm an idiot. My linkage snapped and I forgot to measure it with the end that snapped. It's 14'. Thank you so much for your reply though.
