    Just bought one of these yesterday and tried it at the range off a mat. I did get some misses with the SW. The PRGR was flat on the mat ~4 feet behind. Luckily, I live on a golf course and can practice on my local holes late in the afternoon. I mounted the PRGR on a short tripod and started hitting SW, PW, and 7i from the fairway to the green from various distances. I got much better results with the tripod (~12 inches) concerning misses. I do find that the better the quality of my shots, the better the PRGR performs. The no ball swing speed mode is a big plus. It kind of verified what I already knew that swinging harder does not mean faster.
    Great little gadget for cheap money.
    Cheers FJ

    Ali, I find I get more consistent results by having PRGR on a little tripod, don't have the luxury of trackman or quad to compare but comparison from start to finish of speed work rather than actual numbers is very helpful👍

    Interesting, I would suggest that you have the unit sitting at the same height as your mat. Just put a spacer under it that is the same thickness,it may help your readings.

    I bought one of these at the beginning of the first lockdown to use in my net. I then took it to the range when we were aloud out and found it was very accurate.
    We have markers at our range which I also zapped to be sure.
    The only thing it struggles with is it sometimes doesn’t pick up my 64* sand wedge and hardly ever pics up my 58* lob wedge. But from my 50* gap wedge right thru to my Driver I’ve found it very accurate. Great video as always 👍👍

      @@seantobin515 I saw that video. PRGR in just this video is all over the place, however, because it doesn't read spin. You can't use it as your source of truth, that's why comparing it to the Quad is good.
      I mean, for me anyway, +/- 5% is not good enough for distances. 150 yard shot means it's between 142.5 - 157.5 yards. I can figure that out for myself at the range hitting at targets which are lasered.

    I've had the PRGR for several months and its great but the one flaw is what you discovered. It does not pick up on high lofted wedges. Frp PW on up, it works great. Spotty on GW and nothing after that. I've tested mine against the GC Quad they have at my PGA Tour Superstore and it his pretty much spot on. For $200, its a great little device. I especially wanted it to learn my carry distances which was always just a guess before.

  • @barebarekun161
    @barebarekun161 3 роки тому +1

    This thing is a steal, I got a red one from Japan for $100 but those only read in Meters per second.
    According to the manual the placement have to line up well to the ball and where you hit it or the reading will be off or sometimes no measurement other than clubhead speed.
    Manual suggested the device to be placed at least 3.5 feet behind the ball.
    I don't take the carry distance very seriously since they just simply take in the simple club/ball speed and smash in to factor and anything else out of the window so the carry numbers are quite optimistic or even best case scenario.
    But then it's only a $100-200 device so I have keep my expectations realistic.
    As a swing speed training this thing is awesome a pocket sized deice with easy straight forward setup.
    Put this thing in perspective and it's Trackman that needs to reduce it's price, it still too way too expensive for most people.

    I just bought a PRGR and can't wait for our Canadian polar vortex to bugger off. After watching a few reviews may I add another valuable use for this little darlin'. I intend to bring it on the course to check distances off the tee and into greens with my game balls instead of the range balls. At the range I can hopefully get some useful yardages for irons and maybe compare say a faded 7 iron against the same club hitting a draw. Thanks for the review though. I am now a new subscriber.

Each one of them included placing the PRGR on a small block of wood or the box that it came in so that the sensor on the unit is slightly above the Astroturf mat you are hitting from. In each of those other test videos clubhead speed, ball speed and carry distance were much closer than what you are seeing in this video, usually within a couple of percent

    My first set of woods were Sam Snead persimmon probably from the 1950s. Driver, brassie (2 wood) and spoon (3 or 4 wood). Tiny sweet spot as no peripheral weighting and a lump of lead in the middle. Half an inch from the centre (still in the screws) was a miss-hit. Modern woods are so much easier to hit.

    I have been using one of these for 12 months. Mode switch changes between carry and total distance, as well as smash factor. Wind effect is about plus/minus of about 5 yards. Not much good with high wedge shots. I use the smash factor to identify distance of my good shoots, thereby knowing how far my best shots will go . This allows me to work on club selection decisions on the course. Should I try for my best shot or club up and go for a 3/4 swing? The numbers are close to my Arccos data.
    One other thing I noticed was that if you are using single length Hybrids it works better to call them a similar iron on the club selection (i.e. 19H = 3 iron)
    No metric settings.

    If it’s percentage differences to Trackman or one of the other professional level monitors is consistent , then it is more than worthwhile. No different from converting yards to meters etc. Plus, I never take notice of total distance watching UA-cam club reviews. As you say, it is so conditional on course conditions. I have one and it is very handy for speed work as you don’t need to hit a ball to get a club head speed reading. Unfortunately I hoped it would help work on wedge yardage control and that’s where it fails. Had no problem picking up readings on wedges as long as a wedge was the club selected HOWEVER the readings it gave were way off. A 3/4 sand wedge for me is 60yards, it said anywhere between 71-77yrds! Can’t work with that.

    Not sure if you can answer this because you prob don't slice lol BUT! Hitting into a net, if you were to slack on form and just try to wail the ball and it sliced, would the PRGR be able to tell that and thus you'd lose distance, or would it just calculate from the first bit of ball flight and swing speed?

It got me swinging a bit harder....he took it back when he left....after he left I was hitting bombs...sure wish i had them numbers to compare. Anyways, want to buy one. Question : How accurate is with range balls? These range balls have 2 stripes on them. I'm curious if I had a 105 swing speed and a 255 carry with the range ball would this equal a premium ball if I were to hit that? Or would the premium ball go further....all things equal.

    • @nupezb
      @nupezb 3 роки тому

      Most range balls use a very cheap base rubber. The covers of range balls are typically made of a thicker (and firmer) Surlyn blend to make them more durable. Overall, you can expect slower ball speeds and very different performance on crucial launch characteristics such as spin and height versus a premium ball. Most golf course have a limited-flight ball range ball. Therefore, I wouldn’t use your distances on the range to benchmark your club distances

    Trick with the PRGR is it keeping level!
    Started with £5 tripod with a spirit level, being dead level gives much better reading.
    I have mine mounted on a little wall bracket solved the problem, works perfect, with the guide booklet distance.
    The unit needs to be 8-10ft of the net for best chance to read. It would be interesting to test the new Titleist friendly trackman balls.
    I now run side by side with an R10, not 2 yards on any shot, R10 on range mode.
    Garmin have now advised to place EVA foam behind the screen to cancel out radar track for improved readings.

    Btw the more expensive launch monitor has a large margin of error of about 5% . I can tell cause it shows up on the screen. The PRGR seems to be just on the edge of the upper range of error of the more expensive monitor

    • @larrybud
      @larrybud 3 роки тому +1

      That's not what those smaller numbers are reporting. The small numbers are averages for that club during that session, with a +/- of the current swing vs the average. While the PRGR seems to read ball speed fairly accurately, it can't calculate carry distance because it can't read spin. It's taking a "typical" spin rate for that club, which is why the club is required to be selected on the device.

    I am looking at the PRGR HS-130A. It says is has a NEW Wide Screen plus it has a fourth number it displays (Smash Factor) that is displays after swinging. It display all four numbers, Club Speed, Ball-Speed, Smash Factor, and Carry. You push the Mode button the toggle between Carry/Total. Again all four numbers are displayed instead of the model you have that displays three numbers (club speed, ball speed, carry). Is this model I'm looking at a newer model ? I'm not seeing it referenced anywhere. Again the box says it is PRGR HS-130A.

      After reading your comments I did a search. I was able to see a video in Japanese and tried to determine the major difference. The only difference that I could was a larger display showing all four numbers as oppose to toggling to see the fourth number. I did see a price of $240. Unless there is significant improvement over the 120 version I think the increase price point will draw people away from PRGR.

      @@nupezb I was very curious about this model and decided to make a call before purchasing. As it turns out, they told me one of the major differences is the new model has upgraded technology that gives you better feedback on higher lofted clubs, PW, A-Wedge, etc. I didn't mind paying the extra for that. Plus it just makes since being a newer model it would have better tech abilities. I purchased the newer model and love it. Can't really comment on how much better because I can't do the comparison. Maybe that's something you could consider. In any event, the PRGR is a great aid to have and I have you to thanks for that. Thanks so much for your review on the product.

      After a few sessions with the HS-130a I can say the radar looks to have been improved for lofted wedges. I haven’t had any mis reads on my full wedge shots. The distance is very good too. My main use is for over speed training. I can’t complain at all.

      Thanks for the feedback on your testing the HS-130A as compared to the earlier model. I did pay the extra price but I feel the extra cost was well worth the money to have the added improvement for lofted clubs. It's not the $10,000 dollar level but for the price it is amazing. I take it to the range every time I go. I would recommend paying the extra price for the newer model if you decide on the PRGR.

    I have this launch monitor and when I'm using speed sticks it almost always measures clubhead and ball speed. Even though there's no ball. When it does only register the clubhead speed the clubhead speed matches my ball speed reading when it reports the full stats. Has anyone had an issue with this? Curious if I'm getting up to 130 with the light stick or if I'm just crazy. XD

    It is very important to hit the driver in the middle as this gives a smash factor of 1.50. When I used it my best hits, straight out of the middle of the club gave 1.42ish. I think the ball speed is ok but my 110 swing speed is in reality circa 104. Factor this in and the smash is actually more like 1.48. I cannot stress how important it is to hit the ball in the sweet spot as off centre hits easily carry 30 yards less for the same swing speed.

    Bottom line is that if it doesn't measure spin - can't calculate carry accurately. Two, it's not that your "practice swing" is faster, it's that TM is picking up the clubhead speed *at the moment of impact* which may be lower than the max swing speed that the PRGR is picking up. Three, are you *really* impressed? It's off 10%. No good.
    Use it for ball speed, as that seems accurate, but with all of these budget monitors - If it can't read spin, it can't get distance. No point in dialing in distances if they're off +/- 10%.

    • @nupezb
      @nupezb 3 роки тому

      Understand your concern. I saw another UA-camr actually take it on the course to verify yardage. At any rate, most people are probably going to be interested in swing speed for swing speed training and happy with the other measurements.

    • @larrybud
      @larrybud 3 роки тому +1

      @@nupezb Again, if it can't measure spin, then carry yardage won't be accurate. It sets a "default" spin amount for the club selected, and if your swing happens to produce spin numbers close to the built-in default numbers, the yardage may be close. But that's pure chance.
      If you're looking for swing speed measurements there are products much less expensive designed to do that.
