  • Normally the engine on Toyota Prius only runs to either warm itself up or if the driver is requesting more power by pressing the gas pedal, but if you want the engine to idle or keep it running continuously to perform services such as bleeding the coolant etc., you’re might be stuck (or not), because there is a special procedure on how to do this.
    This procedure is called maintenance, inspection, diagnostic or test mode and its designed to keep the engine running or idle until the operator turns the ignition off. This inspection mode lets the engine idle normally and allows the system to recharge the HV battery as needed.
    Other reasons why you would want an engine to idle uninterrupted are for emissions testing, engine or ignition analysis, warm-up and so forth. When the car is in Park, this engine may idle, but only as long as needed to recharge the HV battery, then it shuts off. Although the engine does idle in Neutral, the system doesn't recharge the HV battery in Neutral.
    In this video, young mechanic Aiman will provide you with a comprehensive guide and step-by-step tutorial on putting a Toyota Prius Gen II I4 1.5L Hybrid Synergy Drive into maintenance mode. Second generation Prius model years are 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 & 2009.
    To activate Inspection Mode on the Prius, the following steps must be completed within 60 seconds:
    1. Keep your foot off the brake pedal. Then "power up" the car by pressing the POWER button twice.
    2. Next, floor the gas pedal and fully release it twice.
    3. Depress the brake pedal and keep it depressed with your left foot for the rest of this procedure.
    4. Shift into Neutral, then floor the gas pedal and fully release it twice.
    5. Shift back into Park, then floor the gas pedal and fully release it twice.
    6. Now the HV warning light on the multi-information display (TV-like screen) should flash. This warning light has the silhouette of a car with an exclamation point (!) on it.
    7. Push the POWER button. The engine should start and continue idling at about 1000 rpm.
    8. Press the POWER button one more time to shut off the engine. This last step also deactivates Inspection Mode.
    The important thing to remember here: Never, ever road-test a Prius while it's still in Inspection Mode!
    On 2001-2003 Prius, to turn the vehicle to accessory mode, Ready-off, this is two clicks forward of the key.

    I used this video today to change the oil in my Prius! I always like to change it hot, so it flows out better with all the gunk suspended. I only had about 15 minutes to change and ZERO time to drive it around to warm up. Pulled the car on ramps, put it in inspection mode. By the time I had some work clothes on and tools and drain pan setup it was warmed up enough to shut off and drain. Thanks for posting a very helpful vid man!

    Thank you for posting this! It was an easy and painless way to get my prius computer ready to be smog tested! It was way easier than other ways I researched.

    This mode is also used to deactivate the traction system which is done to keep the car moving during heavy snow or sand

    Your videos are clear and easy to understand. I have learnt a lot. Thank you so much. Can you make a video showing us how to turn off the traction control light on the dashboard of a Prius 2010?

    So I did it On my previous 2007 and now it is doing the diagnostic. How long do you keep the engine running and where do you find out what the problem is?

    Hi Aiman. Thanks for your instructive video. Just wanted to let you know that the instructions shown at 4:30 minutes (and in the description notes) leave out the 1st step of employing the handbrake. Not sure how important or nec'y it is, but saying - just in case..

    I replaced my coolant valve and topped everything coolant involved .I tried this advice .Unfortunately i did not get the 05 Prius to start due to DTC U0073 & U0293 Codes. I then charged up the 12v that had been idle for a week in less than 30 min. That did not work. Since have been the owner of this car for less than 2 years i have also never had the scanner be able to read the combination meter or the environment.

    Are you holding your foot on the brake until you turn the car off? Do you have to hold it on there through the entire maintenance mode? Or once the motor starts can you leave your foot off the break?

    • @nobodystalkin1
      @nobodystalkin1 3 роки тому

      You do not have to keep your foot on the brake and it stays in maintenance mode until you power cycle

    I followed the steps all the way the first timeand the car did not start up. I did it again and got to step 6 and noticed that the car icon was not flashing and a pop up that says problem. Why is this happening?

    • @EyeOnAiman
      @EyeOnAiman  5 років тому

      What happened when you press the start button (Step #7)? The car icon doesn't have to be flashing, it just need to be illuminated. "Problem" is ok and should be on the display. Were you able to eventually put the car into maintenance mode?

    Hey Aiman, thanks for your video. I initially looked up a quick text document on how to put the car into inspection mode, but there weren't any warnings about not driving it. I did drive the car around for a little bit in this mode. What is the reason it shouldn't be done? What can happen? Since I've done that, it still runs ok. I hope I didn't take a few years off its life though. Thanks in advance.

      The Toyota service manual says it may damage the transaxle if you drive the car in inspection mode

    Aiman, do you have much experience with the a/c units on these? I have a 2005 that leaks Freon out as fast as you put it in. The compressor is good. What are the most likely culprits for leaks?

    • @danielfeyerabend904
      @danielfeyerabend904 3 роки тому

      Not an expert here. But sounds like failed o-rings. Try using a freon with the dye in it and look for evidence of the leak.

    Oh! Just realized this video is -not- for diagnostics! I was wondering why the next video was giving different instructions, lol. Just turn on, hold display button and hit lights 4x. (ua-cam.com/video/YONm6Ci3OFQ/v-deo.html - for those who might also need diagnostics)
