1972 here, I just turned 50 this March....... This song takes me all the way back to memories of winter 1984 in 7th grade, small town western Illinois...12/13 yrs old, I'd tag along with my older brother & his friends. I remember riding around in the back seat of my brothers friends 1970's Plymouth Scamp, aimlessly cruising down snow covered winter country roads with this song cranked up on the radio. We'd go "bumper skiing" = find a snow packed covered country road and hang onto the rear bumper while being pulled at 50 mph. Somehow no one got injured, that was our way of dealing with being broke & bored to death, stuck in a small Illinois town.

I listen to this because somehow it makes me feel connected to him, like he's talking to me telling what he was going through, I hate listening to it, but something keeps pulling me to it, I cant stop listening to it sometimes. It just feels like he is speaking to me through the lyrics. Please, if you are listening to this song wanting to end it all. Please believe that it is not worth it. Its been almost 15 years and it haunts my entire family and even me at 18. Please be strong, live on to hear this badass guitar solo again, or to feel the joy of your favorite song. Though it's in A minor, it sounds happy-ish cause it has more higher strings and notes compared to the intro arpeggio in B minor, which sounds mellow and sad.

Been playing this song a lot lately. Having depression and then I hear the bad news about Chris Cornell. It's amazing how music can help you out when you're low.
I'm not sure. I think you are messing up medical depressions which have a high likelihood of killing you eventually and a normal phase of being sad. In the latter the music might help, and that's what you experience and write about. In the former I think the music hasn't much of an influence and if, rather a malicious one. But as I said, I'm not sure.

0:00 - 2:00 Just pure sadness
2:00 - 2:35 The character in the song getting angry at themselves
2:35 - 3:25 More sadness and feeling helpless
3:25 - 3:55 Again, getting angry
3:55 - 5:05 Starting to not want to live anymore and wanting to just give up, thinking they are worthless

my dad use to play this every night for me, ever since i was little to the day he died a few weeks ago. i'm only 17, and it hurts to not hear him play his guitar for me anymore, it hurts so much to lose my dad so soon. so i'm gonna find my dads old guitar, and i'll be damned if i let anyone stop me from getting it. i was his first and only daughter, and i know he loved me and would go to hell and back if it meant it was for me. my dad played guitar in rememberance of his father, and now it's time for me to play it for rememberance of mine. r.i.p. daddy, i love and miss you so damn much. whether you're in heaven or hell, or if either of those exist as we know it, i'll see you again no matter what; i can't wait for you to hug me tight and say you love me at least one more time. xx

It is art no doubt, and everyone who's had depression, or hasn't had depression can enjoy this artist piece of music. However, in my opinion this song has a very special place in the hearts of those who have had depression.
I was 16 when this band first came out there music was so much different than anything else back then. Now at age 54 I realize they were way ahead of there time.
I'll forever wonder where Kirk would have taken that end solo...15 years later and it still pulls at my heart strings. might be the greatest metal solo to date.

My mom passed away a few days ago. Metallica was her favorite. She used to play music like this from her iPod, and a few songs would always come up consistently, this being one, and another being fuel's Hemorrhage, among many others. I can barely listen to any of these songs now without bawling my eyes out. Its funny how the lyrics fit perfectly with how I feel now. Mind you, I'm still in high school. Please, don't even take your mother for granted. You don't even have a idea of what you have, until it's gone. May you rest in peace up in heaven, I will always love you.

I am 46 years old in 2019. I remember listening to this album for the first time back in junior high on a walk man in study hall. ( kids look up walkman)...haha...When i got to this song i stopped and kept rewinding the cassette tape and listening to it over and over. That my friends is the sign of a great song. The ones you can't get enough of. To me this is one of these all time great songs. A true classic.

I remember the first time I heard this song, it was two years ago when I was fifteen. It was a the bad time in my life, but nobody acually knew. My step father loves Metallica, so he told me to listen to One and try them out. I listen to One, liked it, then to The Unforgiven, and even liked it more, and then Fade to Black. I remember lying in bed all alone with my headphones, it was 1-2 AM.... looked to the ceiling and listened to the melody carefully... I'm not a crying girl, but it was the first time when I started crying even before James started singing... The melody already told the story of the song, and that strong intuitoin made me cry... Such a song...
Found this song two years ago too, when I was 15 myself. I was going through some things that I didn't know how to cope with, and didn't tell anyone, just kept it to myself. I found this song by accident while listening to my Rock playlist, it came on autoplay. I was hooked by acoustic guitar, and I found that the lyrics touched me more than I thought they would. I never cried because of this song, or any song, I'm just not an emotional person. But I felt like it touched this itch inside of me that no other song would.

Man, I’ve been listening to Metallica for decades, and this song will never get old. The lyrics are so powerful and remind you that no matter how deep in the depths of hell you may find yourself, you are never alone.
Some of these lyrics hit way too hard. As someone with depression, I can directly relate to this song. I honsetly feel sorry for James that je ever had to feel like this. This song has been a reminder that I'm not alone. Thank you, Metallica.

When you listen to this song and the entire album and compare to the stuff they've been realeasing in the last 30 years then you realize how deep the mighty have fallen!
Between 83 and 88 they were trully magnificent. They were never this old school thrash metal band. Their music was something else beyond that label. When they were in their prime they composed some of best music the world has ever listened.
When I was a kid I knew all their songs and lyrics by hart, but I was to naive to understand the depht of some of their songs. This was one of those.
