Shit...first time I heard that line, I was so comforted knowing that someone else out there was feeling the same thing. And I was only 18 when this album came out. Now at close to 50 this REALLY rings out.
I heard this song in 1992 and related to it. I was adopted at birth in 1965 and some of my aunts and uncles reminded me that I was not blood. I was expected to adhere to what I was told to do.By the time I was in my early 20's my father was reminding me I wasn't blood. He was old enough to be my grandfather. They were a Louisiana southern family. As long as I played by the rules, it was okay, When I got into my teens and beyond and tried to have my own thoughts, I was a cast away.

I was in high school walking up from the parking lot around Fall 1992 when an upper classman drove past in an open air Jeep blasting this, and it hit me like it was hypnotic. I knew of Metallica but I thought they were a thrasher band like Megadeth. Boy was I wrong. Almost 50 yrs old now and still a huge fan.

Dear reader, I don't know you and you don't know me, probably we are not even living in the same country, we look different... We speak different languages, maybe we are from entirely different generations. We are just complete strangers, but there is something that connects us. We both have great taste in music ! Thank you for being here. God bless you, whoever you are!

I went to their show in Toronto last Sunday (July 16th, 2017) and it blew my mind. There's a reason why Metallica is one of the best bands in the world. This song and ONE were my favourite. Please, come back soon!!!
Couldn't agree more. I was at the Toronto show as well. First time seeing them, and so grateful I was able to. I thought it was the most perfect concert... sound wise, performance, lights, just everything. I didn't hear even 1 fucked note. A night I wish I could see over and over for sure.
Briana De Luca I seen them in London when I was younger it's was fucking epic I'd love to see them again, all the flames shooting from the stage with huge coffins hanging from the ceiling and green lasers and Kirk with his bad ass guitar have you seen it I think it has like Frankenstein's monster on it
Carolina Montealegre I was listening to Metallica when people like you made fun of people like me for listening to them....Then they came out with "One" and all the people jumped on the bandwagon, try listening to Killem All or Garage days, super fan
"Never shined through in what I've shown" When he says it dude it sounds out of this world,I could listen to that vocal track on repeat for days and days..and days
This was the first metallica song i ever heard as a kid. I got a guitar, learned to play, met a girl, got married and had 2 kids. 30 years later, divorced and coming back to my roots. Picking up the guitar again, and still feel the same chill in my bones listening to this song that kicked off my whole life. Thank you metallica. Heres to a new life.
Don't marry immoral c0m3 dumpsters, let me know when ur kids or grand kids or great grand kids take there lives or sterilize themselves since suckers never learn to not bread with monsters
Metallica has gotten a lot of people through unbelievable tough times. Myself included. I think about everyone who has leaned on Metallica through life and it amazes me. Be strong and positive everyday
When I was a 15 years old boy I would listen without understanding the lyrics of this song. Because I like Metallica's music very much. Today I was 33 years old when I understood the lyrics of the song, I cried. As a man who has lost a lot of things, I will tell you , Never free Never me , So i dub thee unforgiven...
Matthew, If you happen to come across this: I stumbled upon your article by chance and was captivated by your story. Thank you for sharing it. Long live metal!
Metallica is a huge heavy metal band. But they are not just good at music, they have a BIG heart! They donated 250.000 Euro for the construction of the first privately founded hospital for children sick of cancer in Romania and the right to use "The Unforgiven" sound in an advertisement for the fund raising! Respect!! 🤘
When music was REAL. Guitar solos, inspired lyrics, and songs that lasted longer than 3 min. I will never forget the first time I heard this song 30yrs ago #longlivemetallica
Yeah Metal was real back then after Chuck Schuldiner and Dimebag died a great part of Metal died. Now we have all this Metal without guitar solos and boobs give me back Cliff Burton and the real Anthrax not the ones who hangout with Butcher babies and then I will forgive Metal. The only Modern Metal I like is Modern Thrash like power trip outside of Neo Thrash Modern Metal has some lazy bands who just use downtuned 8 string guitars and stupid Goth bands that use their female singers as sex objects.
@@Highrollinhunter i personally like metal right now too. people like architects, gojira, all that remains, and a few more. modern metal is still good imo, but i guess you can argue with that. no need to like it anyway
One of Kirk Hammet's finest solos, hearing Lars thunder away on the mini tom/snare fill he does right before Kirk starts shredding always gives me goosebumps!
@neemz0117 I honestly think besides for being a bit more musically proper (Cliff was more versed in musical theory than the rest) Metallica would have largely remained the same. The reason I say this is because James & Lars are the drivers, while Kirk & Cliff/Jason/Rob are the passengers.

Not MY favorite band or anything, but it’s almost hard to believe that Metallica has achieved what they have. They’re such a phenomenon and have contributed to music in no different a fashion or scope than Mozart or Liszt did during their own times, I’ll give them that simply cuz they have it due to them. So I would also have to say there’s no peaking involved. They reached legendary status across generations and will never even qualify to be “passed their peak” or no longer “in.” There’s no falling from where they have reached. And I don’t know many other bands who reached such a height. Obviously Beatles did, Fleetwood Mac definitely did, heck they were going strong after seven decades and just last year lossy their first band mate. There’s no possible way Metallica won’t do the same. They’re one of the only bands that came out of their time that everyone on earth under 75 years old knows and recognizes. They enjoy the recognition the world over amongst their contemporaries only surpassed by the Jackson’s. I’m not entirely sure, you’d have to ask their fans but this song is surely in the running for the band’s magnum opus, as Nothing Else and others. Their songs couldn’t unseat Stairway or anything as far as thee quintessential rock song, but they definitely have some pieces that will join the timeless classics. So again, I don’t think after achieving all they have that such a band really qualifies to have a peak and a fall from high.

Everybody talks about Nothing Else Matters and Enter Sandman and Master of Puppets, but I honestly think this is their best song. Poetic and light yet simple and heavy.
Been listening to these foos since I was 13. I’m 34. I just realized today working from home. Pound for pound, this is their best song. It’s emotional, it’s heavy, it’s mature, it’s reflective, the guitars are pretty the drums sound solid, and the guitar solo is just a fucking masterpiece.
@Jeffrow Ryan light and poetic? I find this song incredibly sad....the video is so devestating...a child who was never loved and was abused. So he's telling his father he'll never forgive him for ruining him emotionally.

This song rings true for so many. I guess it was my story. Abused mentally and physically as a little girl with heavily religious upbringing, suffering a trauma induced disability for 30 years. Now I'm older and wiser experiencing self acceptance and not tolerating ANY toxic behavior. ❤ Faith, hope, love, and Truth are life to me.
I think what artists today fail to realize is how effective real instruments are. I like all kinds of music, but I miss the feeling of rock and metal from this time. Whether it be the rage of the drums, or the plucking of my soul when an awesome guitar solo is being played. An instrument conveys the emotion of the person playing it better than any electronic sample can. The instruments are the windows to an artist's soul, and that's why some performances of songs are better than others, because you can feel the emotion of the artist through the instrument they're playing.
you just have to be more opened about the other things. Like I also feel super connected when I can hear the little mistakes or the little details that a human has on a guitar. But electronic music can easily convey beautiful emotions as well, u just have to look at different things.
I don't have a problem with electronic music. I listen to plenty of it. The 90's actually had the best techno/electronic music in my opinion. I grew up in the 80's though, when there was a wide variety of music on the billboard music charts. Some was all electronic, some used all instruments, some used both. I just feel like very little to no popular music today utilizes all real instruments for their music. I miss the hair band and heavy metal sounds that existed in the 80's. I miss the love songs from back then too. Popular radio music just seems to be much less diverse now.
This song is special for everyone like myself born with a disability. I've spent most of my youth in hospitals, doctors deciding over what needed to happen, what I should and couldn't do. They said i'd never walk and would die young. I worked really hard to prove them wrong and learned to walk and didn't die young. But most of the things I worked hard for to be able to do, i also lost again over the years. And because they said I would die young they said I shouldn't make it hard for me at school and pick an easy direction, I basicly had no say in that, and if I tried it ended in an argument real fast. All that left me quite a bitter man that never really let shine through what he really knows, who he really is.
1992 I was 17 and this song floored absolutely everybody. 2022 I’m 47 and this song still floors me. So insanely talented. This band meant so much in 90’s this band means so much in the 2020’s
This song changed my life. I was a lost teen, wasnt sure where i belonged, i didnt really have much in common with my friends except 1. I was listening to the radio, to a station i never played before and i heard James' voice. From there i learned more about me and what i liked. I branched out more, met different people, had tremendous experiences. From this one song. ❤
Jamie Koering he’s an amazing guitarist but he just uses too much wah and makes half good sometimes plain bad solos nowdays and even during the recording of the song bob rock had to really squeeze that solo out of him he can’t do solo with emotion and feel anymore. I know he doesn’t deserve the hate from people but I do see why they think he’s bad but he just needs solos This good then perhaps he won’t be overlooked.
people shitting on Kirk are just pathetic losers anyway. He is the lead guitarist of one of the greatest and most successful bands in history, he's in the Rock and Roll hall of fame. All the losers shitting on him are literally nowhere. xD
I was 6 years old when Black came out, but these songs are etched into my memory from my 15-year-old brother's room, though the walls. This song definitely stuck the most in my memory until I discovered Metallica and Rock music in earnest in the late 90s.
OK I’ve been playing drums since 1986 because of megadeth&Metallica Master of puppets .MASTER master…… I was on my way to work one day sat on the toilet and the radio sitting on the tank behind me was turned down low The unforgiven And it’s on that Mountain station and they play every day and every time I listen to it I think it’s Hetfield but I think it’s also Me, its you,it is very profound, where we are, Sometimes I break down into a hysterical cry when I read the lyrics or just listen to it at the right move it it’s just every time but I finally listen to it you know what I mean I’m a musician and i write my own music Hetfield proves it right there when it’s really personal, the music comes out powerful & strong it shows how everybody’s attitude was on here, even messages, just a bunch of sweet chaps) that’s obviously Hetfield is the old man right everyone. What a bunch of great nice messages from people on here It >Hetfield is quite,¥The song writer.~ PEACE…!

Same here. When this album came out in 1991, I was 13. The lyrics resonated with me somewhat then, but even more so and on a deeper level now, 30 years later.
Same here :) I'm 37 now. My dad was a single father. He has his own business and most of the time work until 3am. He introduced me to Mettalica and Pink Floyd as my lullaby. Really appreciate his effort and I'm definitely happy it was Mettalica :)
It's good to notice that the old guard of 90s metal bands have made some everlasting classical music tracks that will stand the test of time. It's always great when you have experienced culture on a certain level as teenager and that level was correct all along. I genuinely think that today's poopular bands and lists are so forgettable, I mean this was mainstream on MTV, 90s metal broke through some barriers and set the tone for future bands to follow. It's interesting to see if we both manage to stay alive another 40 years are those Katey Parreys and more forgettable poeple still on radio.

And quickly he's subdued.
Through constant pained disgrace
The young boy learns their rules.
With time the child draws in.
This whipping boy done wrong.

A vow unto his own,
That never from this day
His will they'll take away.

The only Modern Metal I like is Modern Thrash like power trip outside of Neo Thrash Modern Metal has some lazy bands who just use downtuned 8 string guitars and stupid Goth bands that use their female singers as sex objects.
it's all about the algorithm nowadays
Metallica rules but rap is dominating now and it’s very good
@@Highrollinhunter i personally like metal right now too. people like architects, gojira, all that remains, and a few more. modern metal is still good imo, but i guess you can argue with that. no need to like it anyway

One of Kirk Hammet's finest solos, hearing Lars thunder away on the mini tom/snare fill he does right before Kirk starts shredding always gives me goosebumps!
lars suck
At that part right now , amazing
A fact.
Could you imagine how hard they be shredding still if cliff never died.

So again, I don’t think after achieving all they have that such a band really qualifies to have a peak and a fall from high.
my dad used to play this song every night claiming "this was my life" we both share similar lives of abuse; a lot of the abuse i suffered came from him and the same with his father but as i got older i listened to this song on repeat. now the lyrics represent my life and now i understand why he believed they represented his

Through constant pained disgrace
The young boy learns their rules
With time the child draws in
This whipping boy done wrong
Deprived of all his thoughts
The young man struggles on and on he's known
A vow unto his own
That never from this day
His will they'll take away
What I've felt
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never be
Never see
Won't see what might have been
What I've felt
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never free
Never me
So I dub thee unforgiven
They dedicate their lives
To running all of his
He tries to please them all
This bitter man he's
Throughout his life the same
He's battled constantly
This fight he cannot win
A tired man they see no longer cares
The old man then prepares
To die regretfully
That old man here's me
What I've felt
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never be
Never see
Won't see what might have been
What I've felt
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never free
Never me
So I dub thee unforgiven
What I've felt
What I've known
Never shined through in what I've shown
Never be

Won't see what might have been
What I've felt
What I've known

Like the holy Bible.
If you cant notice they feel old, then you are fucked up somehow and somewhere, there is nothing that resembles music back in the days, let me put it simple, i do remember shakira starts, she was singing songs that meant something, nowadays her music is commercial shit that traps braindead people. Yeah she sold herself to mass enterneintment.

I’m not a musician by any means, but my godfather used to sing this to me as a kid. He died in a house fire when I was 8. I’m 26 now, but I recently got guitar hero Metallica. As I was playing I couldn’t keep it together I balled my eyes out, I 100% the song. All I could hear is his voice. It made me so sad but so fucking happy. I’d give anything to hear him sing his heart out to this song again

I'm 33 and grew up listening to them, my mum and dad are big fans. In fact so is my brother and sister, mum and dad split 28 years ago but we all got together and went and saw them together 5 years ago here in Scotland. I remember this song made me so sad as a kid because my mum explained they took away his will 😭😭😭 When she explained it I remember just being so upset but not where I wouldn't listen.
True ..even I feel the same 👍
For me it's:
1. Fade to Black
2. One
3. The Unforgiven
@Jeffrow Ryan light and poetic?

Starlesslight That's exactly what I think!
you just have to be more opened about the other things.
Starlesslight I feel you
Starlesslight, so true, I produce electronic music but I come from an age of real instruments and find all my inspiration there.
A day when no single man will listen to this song will be last day of humanity.

Don't worry, i'm 15 and i'll listening this all my life
only if humans are gone
They really aren't what they once were. Megadeths made better music since 1990.

I know all the cool kids shit on Kirk these days, but this solo is undeniably great
Its his magnum opus
He’s not the best guitar player ever but I can happily admit that the solo is pure gold.
Kirk is fine
people shitting on Kirk are just pathetic losers anyway.
Бессмертная, нестареющая классика. Есть такие вещи, которые никогда не меняются и идут с тобой через всю жизнь. Эта песня-как раз из таких.
OK I’ve been playing drums since 1986 because of megadeth&Metallica Master of puppets .MASTER master…… I was on my way to work one day sat on the toilet and the radio sitting on the tank behind me was turned down low The unforgiven And it’s on that Mountain station and they play every day and every time I listen to it I think it’s Hetfield but I think it’s also Me, its you,it is very profound, where we are, Sometimes I break down into a hysterical cry when I read the lyrics or just listen to it at the right move it it’s just every time but I finally listen to it you know what I mean I’m a musician and i write my own music Hetfield proves it right there when it’s really personal,
the music comes out powerful & strong it shows how everybody’s attitude was on here, even messages, just a bunch of sweet chaps) that’s obviously Hetfield is the old man right everyone. What a bunch of great nice messages from people on here It >Hetfield is quite,¥The song writer.~ PEACE…!

Same here, I am 42. It is still the best song I have ever heard.
I think radio will prevail over some tunes people are listening today...
