There is also a lot to be said, that there are NO bad pedals if you're using them all. Oh, this fuzz sounds weird and unlike another fuzz you've sound? Use that. I want to have one of those rooms where I have every cheap weird broken pedal possible so I can mix and match to make tones that are hard to reproduce.
Ryan's made one before. Just search for the video; it's a good one. If you mean you're hoping he'll come back to it, I kinda doubt it. I'm pretty sure there was another video where he said he didn't want to pursue making a ton of different genre specific boards.
How affordable are you looking? I just made one for myself, both a cheap version and a more mid version off Kijiji/Marketplace. Clean OD into Fuzz into Reverse Reverb is, like, your milk AND your honey. I would argue that if you need to eat a single bullet, you get Oceans 11/12 because they whole game hinges on how good your Reverb is. But Fuzz? Behringer, or Azor, or anything. I haven't heard a Donner fuzz, but I bet it'd do, cause Fuzz is impossible to screw up too badly. Clean OD, get like. The Joyo Taurus does the job well enough at a great price point. This delay that was demoed in this video is excellent for a cheap delay pedal, and again, Behringer is a $20 pedal that does the job. Any other modulation can come off of a cheap Line 6 multiFX board, as well as a little extra room reverb to add into the mix since you'll use the main reverb for reverse. TLDR: You could do it for very little, but your uses for it will be limited entirely by your main reverb pedal
@dylacious92 Ryan mentioned in the Sonicake Sonic Ambiance video that he might revisit the shoegaze Afford-A-Board. (I bought a Sonic Ambiance pedal after watching that video) @colinbranning9416 I have a pretty good all genres board right now (line 6 m5 filling in the gaps) but I send these videos with my band mates that don’t have quite as much gear that I have.
I love it when these less expensive brands pay literally any attention to names and art and branding. It's depressingly rare. These presentation of these pedals isn't perfect but it's at least fun and attention getting.
I love the afford-a-board. You inspired me to explore the Island-it didnt stay on the board but moved me on to better delay and looper pedals. Great series, eager to see where you take it!
I have the Island. It has a few issues but there's such a wide selection of sound that I'm keeping it for those wild experimental samples. The Vintaverb has a couple of really great reverb on it as well, if not dimed, like the plate and Modulation.
Always love the afford-a-board series! It is strange that Donner got rid of the Island, as well as the Fuzz Seeker. Both punched way above their weight for the price.
And if you convert an old fashioned dial telephone from a thrift store into a microphone with a few easy sodders, and use it to record your amps, its an instant lofi sound. And If you buy an old transistor radio from a thrift store, and convert it to an amp with a few easy mods, you have an instant amp with a gritty voice.
I've been slowly making my way through your chat with Andy and it's been a great ep, but I had to click on Afford-a-board as soon as it showed up. Got about 20 minutes left of beach bungalow bash to go. It's a good video.
Watched the whole thing- First, a MILLION thanks for actually using a CLEAN tone. It's awesome to get to hear an entire new line simultaneously. Great job! Would've maybe dug hearing more of 'em with the controls more around "noon" instead of everything maxed out most of the time, lol...
Truly unprecedented 5th comment. To sum up, now that I've circled back: that delay produced some surprisingly Atari glitchiness goodness and needs to be issued with a twisty foot switch like a disc that can be manipulated hands free, Dog distortion can hump a leg, Cuvave is golden but Musiclily is rusted golden-- very tough call, Island is a great delay (but must go due to inavailability) and the White Tape was glorious until recently when something changed on it, that iSet Flanger is killer-- just simply delicious and just WORKS, octaver vote all day, everyday, all year. Return of Afford-a-Board gets a big vote. Afford-a-Board shirt for the rest of us.
Afford a board is very informative. I'm not into tons of distortion and overdrive myself just enough to get that Fender Bassman vibe going is enough for me. I'm pretty basic, Reverb,Delay, Compression,Fuzz,Slap Echo, Tremolo, that's about enough for me. Afford a board is a great idea I think. My vote is keep it going.
I hope the afford-a-board keeps going. It's good to hear about the < $100 pedals that have character and build quality. I'm not a very big fan of reverb, but liked the modulated sound on the reverb here. It gave a vanilla pedal a notch of personality for a low price.
I'm not trying to start a fight, but a philosophical discussion. I buy a lot of gear second hand off various marketplaces, and whenever people are like. I don't really like reverb, I'm always dumbfounded and like. You mean the single best pedal on your board? I have THREE of them in my chain
I hate the fact that I missed this when it dropped, as I always enjoy commenting. On the bright side I was cranking out some Mississippi Queen at the time it dropped and having a blast using my new Boss SD-1. Welcome back from Snake Island Ryan.
I’m all for more affordaboard videos. I wonder how many weirdos like myself have a pedal board that is filled with stuff from these videos. I’m always seeing new cheapo pedals on amazon that I think need to be reviewed by someone I trust to tell me the truth. I’ve bought over a dozen pedals by yer recommendation and I haven’t been lead astray yet. Thanks!
For a pedal I use all the time, it's really hard to name another song that uses Chorus in a dominant way. It's just like, sure, right. The Come As You Are sound.
This series was what got me to start watching your channel, since I just started guitar not too long ago and was looking for good cheap pedals to try out
Ryan - glad to see the afford-a-board return. Thanks! Why don't people watch your videos longer than 10 min?? I wonder if it's because you spend more time than most channels noodling and messing around. I love that about your videos, but perhaps others don't...? I think most other channels have a repertoire of 30 second snippets of particular styles that they select from. You do that somewhat, but have a lot of fun in between. I feel like that's an integral part of your thing, so I'm not sure you should change it, but that's what I notice. Thanks again!!
So far the average watch time on this video is 13:45. Which is a little above average for me. Most people don't stick around for whole videos, it just part of how people use youtube.
I got the Muff. What I like about it is it really sounds like a real Electro-Harmonic Muff instead of just being in the ball park up in the grey seats.
Overdrive horse isn't even vaguely a centaur clone, regardless of what most youtube channels assume/say. I'll probably trace the circuit for fun, but it's only got one single opamp IC, has some leds for clipping. It's probably just a single gain stage with everything jammed together, tone, clipping, etc, and then I think more clipping on the way out.
@@60CycleHumcast I've drawn out the schematic, and it appears to match the topology of the "Honey bee", which also explains the "Honey" and "Nature" labels. I'm also not sure if it's directly cloned, or cloned off of a derivative. I found a schematic for a clone which I've been comparing, and so far most of the resistor values match, including some not-super-common values, and it uses the same model of single op-amp, but a few resistor values are _way_ off, which might explain why it doesn't really seem to work in a way I'd expect. I'll look for some more schematics to compare, and probably swap some parts to see if it improves.
Ryan, could you do a series of videos with affordable pedals for people who want a specific sound? Not full boards but 1-4 pedals. Surf, rockabilly, classic rock, 70s metal, 90s grunge, etc. PSA: The Azor pedals site has their pedals & Calines on sale for a few dollars cheaper than Amazon.
Awesome channel, only just discovered you! Definitely do more affordaboard videos. Would love to see demon fx and Biyang, especially ripple tide and tap delay

As far as I know, Dolamos are all re-branded Calines, and at the same time, most of them Dolamos are inspired on RC Booster, RAT, and other classic brands.
@@ChrisRash On another YT video with it, that's what one guy said, after he opened it up and looked at and traced the circuit. He said it's not a Klon clone, because it doesn't have the dual gang pot on the gain control, dual op-amps, or charge pump, all of which are hallmarks of a Klon circuit.
I just bought the horse, and I think mine's a dud. I dime the drive knob, and get only mild overdrive when I pick hard. I wonder if it's got an incorrect resistor or pot killing the gain.
I love the affordaboard so I say do more! Thanks for reopening my Island Delay wound :( I really really wanted one of those but they were already gone when I went to buy one, and they said they didn't plan on making more when I emailed them.

Yep I think I need that delay for the digital bloopy sound. I bet that would be great with a bass synth. A nice FM bass. Thanks for doing more afordaboard pedals.
The Chicken is almost certainly a rebadge of their earlier Pure Sky (Timmy clone)It has that same open grainy-ness and the treble and bass knobs are a pretty big giveaway.
It could be an Orange Burst, because the earlier light blue Azor with bass and treble didn't have the more scooped mids of a Pure Sky, but sounds more like a TS with bass and treble controls with boosted mids, which is what the Orange Burst is, being a BB Preamo clone, and that's what a BB is. We all assumed the light blue Azor was a Pure Sky/Timmy type, because of the color, but that's not what it sounds like, so this one could also be either of them.

Hey Ryan, would you say that the Chicken is more like the Caline Pure Sky, with more scooped mids (supposedly their Timmy type) or more like the Caline Orange Burst, which is their BB Preamp clone, which is basically a TS with bass and treble controls? The reason I ask is that everyone assumed the light blue Azor was like a Pure Sky Timmy type, because it's the same color as the Pure Sky, but it sounds a lot more like a TS/Orange Burst than like a Pure Sky to me.

But will Azor send you another 100 pedals to give away...
Great to see a new affordaboard develop, always love those video’s!
Hopefully anaffordaamp will be there too, because for what else would one be interested in an affordaboard?
P.S. can’t believe those Azor guy’s skipped the year of the Rat in this new series ..
Apparently, the word used in everyday Chinese can mean either rat or mouse. I don't know if there's a particular reason for "rat" becoming the conventional translation.
