The first chord from the piano, made me tear up immediately. I blubbered thru the whole MV. I've watched the MV sooo many times, and I cry every. Single. Time.
Here is some extra info about the music video... Director Um Tae Hwa released a guide explaining the MV and gave 4 Key points. First, the "cube" signified the discrimination and oppression that are prevalent in the daily lives of the main characters. Second, the "camcorder" represents the "lens of love," an important "device" that allows us to look at the beautiful things in the world beyond the internal or external appearance of the characters. Third, IU and BTS V became the main characters in a "survival story of a dystopian worldview of someone who cannot speak and sees the world only through his left eye." Despite the difficulty, feeling hurt and exhausted, they relied on each other despite "cube" and tried to overcome it in the end. Fourth and last, the "wedding dress and tuxedo" symbolize the "fruit of love." At the end where they are seen rising in the air, it depicts that they are finally "free to fly away from all kinds of oppression and pressure." Have a wonderful day💜
You should watch the behind the scenes of the recording of the song. IU was severely ill but she had to record because the schedule was set and IU, being the professional she is, didn't want to postpone everything. It's so heartbreaking to watch her struggle through the recording, but it actually added to the emotion of the song 😭
Yes the lip ring means something. It is bring attention to her mouth to say that it is her voice that has been injured. The lip ring is not present during the any of the fantasy scenes. Both V's eye and IU's voice seem to have been injured during the events that have led up to this point. There are several things that suggest this, the 1st of which is when she approaches him after 1st seeing him through the camera lens, also as if she is nervous to be that hopeful that his eye is healed. If his being blind from say birth or early childhood or even prior to him and IU becoming Lovers than for her his normal would be to be blind and the camera lens would not have changed that fact. But if that injury and hers happened during these events and after they had become lovers than the camera lens allowing them to see themselves before the tragic events would be a cause for celebration. Not only does the lip ring point to the fact that she is mute, and not deaf, but so does the wedding scene where IU is holding a microphone and is singing. There is another reason as well and why it is important . IU is suffering from an earing issue. Where the tube from the inner ear to the throat doesn't close or always close as it should. This can cause discomfort and pain and it interferes with one's ability to hear themselves. And IU did not want there to be any rumors or speculation created suggesting that her hearing was getting worst. So you have the lip ring to point to the issue, it's disappearance in the fantasy scenes IU singing and more conclusively is the fact that she reacts to the sound of the cube twice. Once outside before V even reacts to it and then inside they both react at the exact same time to the sound of the cube passing overhead. Of course sign language is just as important for a mute person as it is a deaf person. And advancing and supporting Korean sing language is a cause of IU's for awhile. She made a point of having it on display in her live performances at the 2017 Melon Music Awards (which by the way it truely one of the most iconic award show performances ever) and again in My Mister. There are 2 other videos related to this MV. A behind the scenes video (ok actually 3 because V also has a shorter behind the scenes video) and a video of IU's recording session of the song. She catch the flu during the filming of the MV. And she mentions in her behind the scenes video that she is suppose to record the song following the shot. That she has already had to cancel it a couple of times and that she didn't want to cancel it again. So as if you need to be anymore impressed with IU's vocal talent, watch her recording session as she still still recovering from being sick and her stamina and energy levels are still way low and she stills has chest congestion and she is in pain. And yet she turns out this incredible piece of vocal artistry. Unfortunately this project became a sign of the times and how divided people are. Here IU has produced a beautiful and timely message about love and their are groups who actually complained and protested against it. The first were some radical activists of the LGBT community who protested the original title of the song which was Love Wins. Claiming that it is a slogan used by them at pride events and that heterosexuals use of that phrase woukd demean it. In other words Love and the message of LOVE can be demeaned based on who is doing is the subject of Love. A total outrageous claim and one that shows that these radicals don't really mean Love. I say radicals because, I am well connected to that community and those who knew of the issue thought that the position that those individuals had taken was beyond ridiculous and counter productive. But IU changed the name to Love Wins All, which in am irony twist made the complain look even worst. Then early on after the release there were a number of people who were misinterpreting the song in a big way. Claiming that the song was about disabled and marginalized people, how they are treated and the Cubes were targeting those people for extermination. This theory spread quickly even though it is NOT supported by the songs lyrics, the actual MV or by IU post on her companies web site about the the song and the upcoming album. But because this was the early dominant theory disabled people started to complain that IU and V were mocking them. They interpreted the fantasy scenes as offensive in the context of the video being about disabled people. After all you have IU and V both seemingly much happier living within the conditions of the camera lens where their disabilities (which are more likely injuries as has already been discussed) are no more and they are now "normal". The meaning being that disabled people aren't "normal" and can be happy living with their disability. Which is really ironic considering those who were pushing that storyline ended up offending the very people they were thinking they were helping. IU in her message stated several things. She said she was telling a story about people who struggle to Love when the world gets in the way. She also stated that this was 1 of 2 love songs on the album and that she was dedicating this song to her fans. Because for reasons she didn't fully understand they have always been on her side. The other aspect of that early and incorrect theory is that it does exactly the opposite of what the actual message of the song is giving. That is dividing people into groups. Love is NOT a divisor. It brings people together, which is another part of IU's message. She states that Love is relentlessly togetherness and hate is always alone. But by claiming the songvwas about the treatment of disabled and marginalized people you be definition start to divide people into groups, which then becomes a finger pointing and blaming other groups for mistreatment none of which has anything to do with love. One reactor even stated that the restaurant scene with those mask figures represented all the people who had bullied IU and V and that they were getting revenge on them. Can someone tell what revenge has to do with Love? But this mind set of identity politics and group membership who hates who are all perfect examples of what is SO wrong with things today. And it is depressing that so many when there so quickly. Despite no supporting facts at all. For example in evaluating that theory any honest assessment of the lyrics and MV and that theory falls apart. 1st ifvthe cubes are targeting disabled people as those people claim where are all of the "normal" people? Where is the pile of items disabled people use and need, like wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, hearing aids, artificial limbs. There are none to be seen. If the Cubes are targeting disabled people supposedly at the request of "normal" people why are the cubes destroying the entire city? I wondered how many times IU needed to say the word Love before people would get the message of the song is Love, Love, Love and nothing else. The factvthat such an obvious and simple message was so quickly turned into something meant to divide, was just plain sad.
This one of the best comments I've seen. It's great to see a common sense comment that is so beautifully written and akes perfect sense....I applaud you for it. 👏🫂💜
If you look at V's hand and the same side of his face (with the burns and the blind eye); I wonder if he escaped the cube before and is traumatized by that.
That's what I have always believed from the 1st viewing. it also makes his action at the end in trying to fight it even more powerful. He put his fear aside to try and protect the one he loves.
Such a beautiful and emotional video featuring amazing acting and vocals that makes the experience so personal. I really do hope that Tae & IU do other projects together both film and music as they have great chemistry and when he was on her show their voices also blended so well. In addition, I would also love for Tae and IU to do a whole Kdrama of this plot when he returns from his MS so we can get the full backstory. It's amazing how invested I got in them in such a short amount of time. It really showcases the masterpiece that this MV is. I noticed the right side of his face seems to have burn scars so maybe he had encountered a cube before but got away at the last minute. This cube was relentless in its pursuit and even seemed to change size so it could come into the building. Earlier when it was flying overhead you could tell no way it could fit inside those hallways. Also the cube waits for them to stop fighting and accept their fate. If you notice there are no other people so obviously no person is able to meet the criteria this cube holds that would allow someone to survive. The camcorder that kept showing a better reality, was giving us the viewer a happier version of the events. They both rise in the air together, their bodies still solid, while the reality is that they have been turned to ash. At the top of the camcorder right before it turns off you see ash particles in the air. I also loved how the clothes landed together on the pile. Again all of this symbolizing that even though they seemingly lost to the cube, it couldn't destroy their love for each other. They stayed together in life and death, so indeed their love did win. I can't get enough of this MV, the acting is Oscar level and combined with the award worthy vocals and lyrics it's both heartbreaking but also heartwarming that at least they went together. I hope you watch/react to the behind the scenes shoot videos. A long one was posted on IU's channel and a shorter one on the Bangtan channel and both compliment each other with both having some scenes and commentary exclusive to that version. 💜
The simple breaking down the song 1) IU is Muted, V is Blind 2) The Cube Represents the standard society set over ppl who are different ( Disabled Couple for this Song ) 3) The Camcorder represents their wanted life and future if only the society can accept their differences 4) Thru out the MV, IU been hand signing but the last part after V hits the Cube, IU just hold V hand and squeeze 3 times, this part not lots of ppl notice it, but it Means “ I Love You “ 5) By covering V eyes, you know IU character is the one trying all her best in uphold this relationship that no one look forward too, can be seen from the restaurant scene where all those faceless ppl are intimidated by their love and that is why they are happily snatching their food, pushing them ard
They are eating the peoples food and causing chaos because the people are not friends , they are against them. They are fighting to keep them apart, and ruin their happiness, they are not celebrating with them. The couple are just continuing to be happy and enjoying themselves together despite the prejudice and hatred of the crowd of people ❤❤💚💜💚💜♥️♥️
Hey Anti-Social, thank you for this belated reaction to LWA from IU ! Very nice, you analysing the audio / text video already made me tear up again. Wow, thought I would be over it by now.

For those who need more acting from IU after this - the best drama you will ever see is My Mister (Netflix) - which is both heartbreaking and incredibly hopeful and uplifting. Often referred to as the greatest Kdrama of all time, a masterpiece, it won lots of awards. Like this MV - that show will stay with you forever….
Almost ALL of the reactors I’ve watched, listening and watching this MV has had the same exact face in the end. Just pure sadness.
