They are starving tortured souls from Asian mythology & Buddhism (specifically China, India, Japan, Thailand, Nepal, and Vietnam), who were once humans but were transformed into these abominations as punishment in hell. There are various types of hungry ghosts depending on their sins. Their sizes range from children to as big as a mountain. They constantly starve & dehydrate, and their throats are so small that it's difficult for them to swallow along with fire coming out of their mouths that it incarnates everything they try to eat and drink. The undead spirits come out during the ghost months (The Hungry Ghost Festival) to find whatever they can eat and drink including blood, carrion, trash, and feces. In some myths, they eat people. Demons would emerge to harass them by hitting them with spiked clubs or burn them with hellfire. The only way they can eat or drink is if the food & beverage is blessed by a Buddhist Monk. Once they consume the blessed meal, their sins are forgiven, their curse removed, and they descend into the heavens. 🍖💀
