Longest Gondola Train Ever! Shoved By 2 Locomotives, Pulled By 2! Snow & Ice Trains In Hamilton Ohio

- Ever seen a train like this?! 2 Miles Of Gons! 2 Locomotives Pulling Over 140 Gondolas and 2 Locomotives Shoving The Rear Of The Train! Then Sponge Bob Square Pants CSX Locomotives pull a mixed freight. These trains are in Hamilton, Ohio passing the building that caught fire when I was filming last week. Norfolk Southern pulled the first huge train toward Cincinnati. CSX pulled the second train passing in the other direction. The first train was nothing but gondola rail cars. Have you ever seen a gondola train that long and with 2 distributed power units ( DPU )? I filmed this in another huge ice and snow storm. The rain froze when the temperatures dropped and then it snowed on top of the ice. Not many people were out on this day so it was easy to move about. The CSX train is pulled by a couple of SD40-3 locomotives that are called Sponge Bob Square Pants locomotives because the front of them has a square shape. Not many SD40 units are still in operation on CSX or Norfolk Southern. The buildings in this video caught on fire when I was filming trains going by them last week and they caught on fire again on Sunday, February 6, 2022. They are constantly being vandalised since the paper mills went out of business a few years ago.
I just got information that the gondola train is 60C out of Indiana Harbor Mill near Chicago. It ships loads of steel ingots to a steel mill in Calvert, Alabama. I filmed this same train recently on the NS Rathole Line in central Kentucky when I was on a bridge over it. Does anyone else have any further information on this train?
Filmed February 4, 2022.

4 six axle engines = 24 axles - 624 total axles = 600 axles divided by 4 per car = 150 gons and four jacks [ancient term for engine]. That's a heckuva CSX train pulled by two half century old engines. You caught that kind of action a couple of days ago with another CSX and two old GP's doing the work. Nice to see old engines recycled and still working for their keep.
That's exactly what I counted!
That's correct....,100% comes together
I concur with your comments I thought it was going to be around 230 + but I’ll take 150
David you are a math wiz
Yeah that’s was very impressive, the last train, it didn’t count the cars but apparently not too many that 2 SD40s couldn’t handle 💪🏼😎
That was a lot of gondolas! Sometimes at work they bring contaminated soil and ballast in gondolas. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching
Great catch JT! Like seeing those Conrail gons in the mix still!
Thanks!
just goes to show you how much TORQUE those old EMD SD40-2’s had.
on another note, listen to the difference in power output between the ET44AC DPU and thE AC4400CW! that ET is way louder!
Thats the most gondolas Ive ever seen, and with a double DPU Alright! Plus 2 CSX Sd40-3 SpongeBob Units
Yes, that was a good day. It started out slow but then both of these trains came almost at once. The CSX train had to wait for the NS train
@@JawTooth Ah-HA, I didn't think of that, well, awesome for Jaw Tooth! 👊🏼🤣
I'm ready I'm ready 😂😂🤣🤣
For both you and WWOT, talking about DPU’s, if you haven’t seen the videos from Mark Clay McGowan, he showed a video from near Tehachapi Loop, a BNSF with not 1 or 2 DPU’s, but 5!!! 3 in the middle and 2 at the end……..that wasn’t even counting the 4 lead locomotives!!! Of course around that territory, there’s a LOT of steep grades.
WWOT, I think you answered my SpongeBob question with your comment here, it has to be those smaller cab fronts with the yellow square. Now, what makes it a dash 3? 3rd upgrade?
Those SpongeBob Units Look Clean Riding On The Snow Covered Railroad.
I counted exactly 150. Never saw any train with so many!
Defect detector said there were 624 axles, 3 axles per locomotive and 4 locomotives, that's 150 gondolas.
Awesome video
Thanks!
Beautiful video, greetings 🔝📽️👍🙋♂️
Thanks for coming!
I wonder what it would be like if I went to a railroad crossing when gates are going down, and a train is remaining 5 MPH, 8 locomotives on front, 4 groups of 2 locomotives helping, 3 locomotives pushing on the back totaling up to 19, all of those locomotives are the strongest locomotives on the planet, carrying thousands of cars (random train cars). I sit on the crossing in my car while it's still running. It took multiple hours until the last cars cleared the road. After crossing the tracks, I ran out of gasoline. Tank was full before the crossing.
Goodmorning from oklahoma jawtooth
Good morning!
Those were SD40-3s, not exactly older as they went through a complete rebuild recently to make them SD40-3s.
What are they hauling in those gondolas its gotta be pretty important to have that many ? Awsome video btw
Not sure but I think it is steel ingots for a steel mill.
Nice video son
Appreciate it dad!
153 condola cars 4 engines wow
I counted 150 cars that time
Were the end 😂
Around 153 plus. Or minus
😊👍👍👍👍👍
Looks like you finally got some good snow! It's nice to see trains in the snow, but it's getting close to the time when it will be real nice to see them in the green again 😊
You got that right!
Just nice to see thanks
Hi Brian! Nice catch!
Were all of those Gons empty as far as you could tell? It would have been funny if CSX went back the other way with 151 “Gons!”
Now that's a whopper of a gondola train. With a strong economy and demand for steel up it's all hands on deck. While NS has a sizeable order in for new gons note how many Southern cars were in that consist. They're at least 40 years old and many of those old Conrails are also coming up on retirement but for now still earning revenue. Great going away shot of the NS train. The curve, signals and high tensiom towers just speak volumes. Those rebuilt CSX SD40s were like the modern day version of Charles Atlas as it hit the Xing stating "Nobody's gonna kick snow in my face!" With a welcome home from the happy animals another successful trip
I’ve been wondering how to equate train traffic to the economy. They were taking ire to be made into steel, right?
@@lindenshaw1986 Gondolas carry scrap and ingots. They are one of the most used railroad cars used in the steel industry. Another would be the cars you see at the beginning of the second train--the one with the CSX "square cab" locos. They are curved on top. Those cars haul coils of steel that will be later uncoiled, stamped and cut into shapes for things like car bodies or other steel shapes. I bet that if you search youtube for "turning steel coils into car bodies" you will find videos that show how that works. But gondolas are used to carry scrap, or in-process iron and steel ingots, or pipe, or I-beams, etc..
@@jonglass so were they empty or loaded? Going into Cincinnati I would figure loaded but saw nothing sticking up at all.
@@lindenshaw1986 if they contained slabs, you wouldn't see anything, so it's hard to know. That many cars, though... kind of suggests to me empties--maybe JawTooth knows?
@@jonglass Loaded cars you can generally see the truck springs are squashed, though in a single-commodity train that's either all loaded or all empty, it can be a bit of a challenge figuring out what extreme they are at.
Enjoy your videos have always enjoyed watching trains since I was a child and still do in my retirement years keep up the good job for us train enthusiastic people jaw tooth
Thanks, will do!
Wow JT 2 great catches I just find the length of these trains mind boggling.... Love the tanker cars.... Here in the UK the amount of freight wagons is usually 18 to 30 hauled by a single EMD class 66 locomotive.... So you can see why we find your freights so amazing.... Great stuff JT 👍🇬🇧
My counted 150 but my eyes got crossed a couple times 😂
At 3:20 the defect detector said 624 axles, remove the loco axles (12) to get 612, divide by 4 and you get 153 cars so you were close. You did better than I would have!
@@JRNipper Weren’t there 4 locos? Two in front and two in back, for a total of 24 loco axles
@@JRNipper
You forgot about the two pushing. 24 axels for the locomotives. 624-24=600÷4(per gondola)=150. Three kinds of people in the world. One's who can do math and the one's who can not.
@@JRNipper The power had 6 axles each. That's 24 axles and that leaves 600 for the cars. 150 gondolas.
Thanks for trying to count cars Jimmie!
Now that I truly have seen the longest gandala train, I need to head on over to Jason's channel and see the shortest gandala train, and possible the slowest 🤣🤣
Great catch JT 😀 In the UK 🇬🇧 that train would stretch from east to west lol 😆 We’re lucky if we get 18 freight cars 🙄 Take care in the snow ⛄️ cheers Stevie 🏴
Thanks 👍
When my wife asks me if I like the meal, I do my best "NO DEFECTS" and since we both watch these, it's good for a chuckle.
Haha
I don't know if anyone has mentioned it but JT has the BEST audio. Lots of bass and very clear.
Wow - is that line Norfolk Southern, CSX or shared by both by trackage rights ? They split apart at some point to their own respective lines - where does that happen ?
JT this was an amazing catch, i have seen this long line of Gondola's on the Southern st louis line again thanks you for the catch
I counted 150. Must be heavy to need two DPU’s on the rear. Then 2 Dash 3’s be pulling 142. Awesome!!!
Hey JT that definitely was a long gondola load for sure I got a 150 of them one of the longer one’s I’ve seen on your channel, and just glad it was going slow enough to count them. Thanks 🙏 for sharing your videos I love ❤️ them I’ve been sick and plus our racing season opened up in Florida and been preoccupied with it. Again thank you 🙏❤️
153
@@dickwarner6604 You need a recount! It's definitely 150...
Those two classic old buildings from about 1890s will probably catch on fire 🔥.Most old towns do.The train is fantastic.
Hello I love trains and I just want you to know that I’m not too far from Hamilton Ohio I’m in oxford and love watching your videos Thankyou for taking time to show us these cool videos
Amazing videos jaw tooth keep up the good work
Glad you like them!
Some brand-new cars on both trains as well. Notice how quiet new cars roll by!
Good morning jawtooth! Hope all is well with u stay safe out there & keep doing a wonderful job! (Keep the video going son)
I think those 2 engines on the rear of that long gondola train ought to be called (DPP’s), Distributed Power Pushers instead of DPU’s.
I didn't count the cars or the axles, but I did notice that two of the clouds weren't paying attention right there at the beginning. Looked like they were trying to let some Sun peek through. Gracias por tu video. RT sends... Puebla, México...
Those two CSX engines look like they're fresh from a shop refurb!
cheers,
Doc
Amazing how quiet most of the cars on that 2nd train were. Very little screamers or flat spots on those wheels.
It would be cool converting some of those old buildings into Railfan hotels. One there in Hamilton, Fostoria, Plant City.
Saw a unit train of gondolas like these recently but it was all COER gons full of scrap that was maybe not even half as long with just 2 locomotives. I've also seen a few unit trains of old coal gons used for scrap. And the video you had of the 2 BNSF & CN loco's, I saw all 3 about a week ago going east out of Northtown on BNSF.
Son …….your my kind of crazy ! Love the trains , keep ‘‘em coming !
More to come!
I loved watching that train splash through the snow. A few years ago, a snowblower for the trains was parked in nearby Rhame. I hoped to get pictures of it or even video of it in operation, but, by the time I got over there, it was gone.
That would be cool to see in operation. I saw one parked near Altoona, Pennsylvania
Great video!! I am always surprised by how quiet those cars are. When there isn't a defect on a particular car, it is almost silent. Thanks.
Years ago Conrail, later NS would run long gon trains like this from the port of Philadelphia to western PA with steel slabs.......when they got into Altoona PA they would sometimes have 3 Gevo's on the head end and 4 SD40-2's shoving hard on the rear.....I've seen this back in September 2006.
An all gondola train is MUCH more pleasing than an all auto rack imo. Love me some gons!
cool catch on that gondola train. Love the CSX spongebob units too!
Now that's long for sure, drone footage showing the entire thing would have been epic.
I was thinking that first train was serving some sort of steel works. My hometown gets similar manifest coming from three or so factories in Sharon, PA area heading into Youngstown and continuing towards Pittsburg my guess. Either gons or coil cars are the most frequent ether with scrap or product from the mills.
150 gondolas by my count, what a train! Thanks for capturing it JT
Those gons have a hard life, rust, wheel flats, bulging sides, but still earning a living.
When a guy is used to C.N train horns, Norfie Southern horns sound good. Keep up the content Son 👍🇺🇲🇨🇦
Thanks 👍
OUTSTANDING!! Man, you outdid yourself AGAIN!! First the neat old industrial buildings… I was looking at the ornate brickwork on the cornices… wonder what that building was back in the day… the gondola train was really cool and even MORE awesome was the ghost Southern Rwy gondolas … lots of coils steel cars on the second train and just as a bonus the CSX motor punching through the snow bank at the street… really cool! Start the video, son!!!
Thanks again! I appreciate your comments and support Chris!
this is another example of a very nice shoot in streets where there still excists complete and entire old fashion industrial buildings very nice to go back in time together in your episodes jaw tooth
I counted 150 gondolas and of course 4 engines. That was a huge train
Wonder if those gone where coming out of storage or going in storage . I would find it hard that just one consignee would need that many in a short time
150 Gons, that is a good train. From almost new cars and which are a little curved and rusty everything is there. The little film is just as beautiful as the film of the box-car train you once showed here. Greetings from Berlin / Germany. Sven
That double dpu looked a bit odd pushing, especially after such a long set, like, is this going backwards now!?
Norfie upside down looking at the dogs like, "dogs, WHY are you upside down? lol
Love applause at end! 💥💨🤣
I counted 143 cars on the last train! I wish I could see trains this long in my area. And it's extremely rare to even see any trains running! I swear if I ever get to see one, I'll be posting the recording on my channel lol.
Wow that is the most gondolas on a train I've ever seen.
Thank you for capturing these two trains in Hamilton, Ohio, Jaw Tooth! That train of gondolas was something to see. I wonder where that train originated and where it was going. Who was going to use all those gondolas? The CSX train powered by the SD40-3s had a variety of cars on it. Thank you for braving the weather and the road conditions to go to Hamilton, Ohio to capture these trains.
I love the sound of that SD-40 horn!
It's cool how your animals all get along with each other.
Nice catch on both trains! ❤️ this spot in Hamilton
160 gondola with 2 locomotive in the front and 2 on the back awesome video 👍🇺🇸😎❄️🎄
Thanks 👍
I got 2 lead engine's 151 gondolas, probably 150, and 2 TRAILING DPU's. What industry could have need of that many Gons? Scrapping a huge structure somewhere, shipyard?
That was cool. I have never seen so many gondolas in one place. Great video
Thanks for watching!
Super neat video. I was going to say that all the gondolas in the Midwest were on that first train, but the second train had some, too. Great crossing with the old brick buildings in the background. Doesn't seen like the smoke or fire did any damage. I was sure hoping they hadn't burnt down. Always good to see Norfie and Chessie and their buddies!
Just yesterday they had another fire at the same buildings. I don't know what is going on but the area is a little shady. Thanks for watching!
2 leads, 150 gonz, 2 DPU = Jaw Tooth does it again!! That CSX train had soe gondolas as well. Thx!!
150 gons and 4 engines to move them. Sure makes you wonder what is in them. A drone shot from above would answer that. Hope J.T. can afford one soon. Then J.T. Jr. Could get in on the live action filming.
When you were filming your kitty, that kitty just winked at you... lol (clip 17:45 and watch)
That's one of those things that make you go "HUMMM"!! What do they need all them gon's for and were are they going I wonder.
That was a real long train. Really cool !
150 gondolas, they must have some
coil steel some where that needs
shipped!! LOL!! You hit the jackpot
on that NS train JT, if I were you I
would buy some lottery tickets!!!
That was a nice mixed bag of
merchandise freight on that CSX
train!!
Good footage of the cat In the Bonus round... Blue tick hound?
She is a Blue Healer. So, yes, correct. Have a great week!
Both of those trains that came through Hamilton were long ones. It looks like a great place to watch trains. Stay warm out there.
Hamilton is a rail lover dream. You have the CSX mainline, which Norfolk Southern uses to get to their mainline a few miles up the road. And a little past the signal bridge from where this video is filmed there is a southbound "directional" running track which CSX uses to get to their mainline via Sharonville and relieve congestion on the ex B&O. So Norfolk Southern uses CSX to go North. CSX uses NS directional running to head south.
Looks like they cleaned out the yard at AK Steel. Wonder if they were all empty or if they had slabs in them?
Have you noticed at several locations where you, and possibly WWOT shoot, that the main crossing lights fade out briefly? The arm lights, and the white lights stay on.
Yes, that is caused by the camera. I see that a lot. Looking through the camera it looks like they are malfunctioning but looking straight at them you can see they are working properly
I should have thought of that possibility. Video rates will do that.
holy crap ! That was long!!
I don't have a long enough attention span to count that many cars! That first train was long, all right.
Are videos easier, harder, or no discernible difference to film when based on a true story? 😁
Good morning Jaw Tooth. That was amazing a Norfolk Southern train with 140 train cars and the CSX long was to awesome. Thanks buddy!
It's LIVE ACTION time.
Good morning!
Great video! I love seeing older locomotives pulling heavy mainline freight.
Great Jaw Tooth! I like gons, the most underrated rail car of them all. And to get 150 of them? Wonderful. It’s also nice to see the coil cars with the refurb’d SD 40-2s! I used to see that combo in Pittsburgh back in the early ‘80s. By the bye, Jaw, Hamilton reminds me of Youngstown.
Right on!
TWO LONG TRAINS WHAT A CATCH !!!! EXCELLENT JT
Thanks for watching!
Wow, that must be the most gons I've seen in a single block, great catch. I wonder, is that a special, or regular traffic? 🇬🇧
They must have set one out before it got to me, I only counted 149 gons 😕
I went back to listen to the hot box detector again. I missed the axle count while I was counting cars and it reported 624 axles. That matches my count of 150 cars. The 4 locomotives had 24 axles so that leaves 600 for the cars, divided by 4 axles per car equals 150 gons.
That is awesome!
I jumped the gun and said 153, then I saw the two loco's on the end so that's 12 less axles worth of cars. Minus 3 =150.
John Broughton and anyone interested. FYI, a teaching moment: Before one uses the axle count from the hot box detectors to determine how many cars are in a train, they need to know how many cars have a different count than 4 axles per car. Unit trains, like this all gon train, makes it easier, as most of them are all 4 axle cars.
But some cars have 6 axles, some have 8, then specialty cars have 8 to 24 axles. Then the container cars with 5 compartments have 12 axles instead of 20, the 3 compartment cars have 8 axles instead of 12. And I’m sure there are other examples of other than 4 axles per car or compartment.
I count the 5 compartment containers cars as 5 cars / compartments. Officially they are only one car. Each compartment has the same car number but with a suffix of A, B, C, D, or E. The 3 compartment container car is similar except the suffix is A, B, or C.
@@billmorris2613 I just counted the cars, it was easier.. 🤣
Stu D'Nutz That is why I posted the reply about relying on the axle count from the hot box detectors. I start counting as soon as the lead units pass. I very seldom use the axle count unless it is a unit train. Then I use it just to verify my count. I too think counting the cars and compartments is easier most of the time. Sometimes the panning can make the counting rather difficult to keep up. Sometimes I have to slow the motion down or speed it up.
Wow! A gondola parade! Norfie, look! Thank you very much Mr. Jaw Tooth! 😀👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you too!
17:08 Kitty looking good, Great train action also !
I wanna pet Norfie. Two fully loaded centerbeam cars.
They look better than the ones at Santa Fe Junction.
Woo hoo woohoo it's a double DPU!
In Canada, the bell continues to ring until the gates go back up.
Any idea what the Redbrick factory used to be ?
Same here in Michigan
I know, their going to a gondola convention in Cincinnati 😀
Jaw tooth that's alots of gondolas on this train ❤
Wow. That was awesome! You find the most interesting trains and places. Thanks!
Glad you like them!
