It is interesting to note how each Partita opens with a different introductory movement: the first with a Praeludium; the second with a Sinfonia; the third with a Fantasia; the fourth with an Overture; the fifth with a Praembolum; the last with a Toccata.

Yes... Bach was a genius of the highest order.

@@davidhertzberg Sure. My best pieces from Partitas are the Fugue in the Toccata, and the Allemande from the 4th

@@cliffpinchon2832 Yes and no. The praeludium, the fantasia and the praembolum have the same structure (only one section); the other three pieces are different from each other: the overture has two sections, the symphony has 3 real and proper movements, while the toccata has a single section but broken in two by a fugue. It is also interesting how these pieces are alternated with each other: those with a single section (1,3,5) and those with several sections, (2,4,6) also positioned in decreasing order of sections (symphony in 3, overture in 2 , toccata 1 but broken in two)

Its fascinating to hear him play this complicated work, how he follows the moving passages and makes the music absorbing.

I feel he has a special connection to this one. I like to imagine he poured all the tragedy of the loss of his mother, or maybe the loss of his dream of family life with Foss. This piece seemed to understand when I couldnt express my own sadness and loss. So I can understand if GG also found a way through it to express his feelings (which he was often reticent about on these subjects. ) However, the date of recording, 1963, shows that those events in his life had not happened yet.

Gould’s playing here doesn’t feel like a series of moments to me like how others interpret this piece. Feels like he gets the work as a whole

Yeah thats why I don't mind hearing him play an out of tune old instrument on a worn out recording. I feel like there is something about the structure he gets, that I want to learn. But also he is in another world as far as the expression.

Gould I believe once remarked that Bach was about structure, less about the notes per se. Something like that. :)

Getting re-acquainted with Glenn Gould, who surely had a way with Bach.
No lack of attitude and self-aggrandizement. Significant for sure, thanks!

Glenn Gould
