probably didn't drill deep enough or it was already spread past your drill point but was not visible.

I've seen other videos where they intentionally drill all the way to the laminate layer and don't use a spring tool at all. Is one method better than the other?

Details from this video with units of measure: .042 inch minimum hole depth. .060 inch maximum hole depth.
Bloggers elsewhere said the top glass layer is usually .078 inch thick.

I'd done a few hundred chip repairs and can answer that.... for sure, 90% of top glass layers is between .068 and .079 inch thick (1.75mm and 2.00mm).
I think what this video is saying is, yes they are definitely that thick but you NEVER drill that deep as you'll hit the laminate layer. .050" is probably good and .060" is getting damn close to the LL.
Unless that's what you were pointing out?? IMHU

@@Initechsystems do you use depth guage or just got an eye for it?

@@Initechsystems looks like the idea is to leave enough of the glass thickness, before the laminate layer, to create a conical 'bullseye' crack as a stress relief to prevent the crack propagation..

I cant afford a new windshield right now, I am going to attempt to stop mine from splintering, I have used repair kits in the past to fill small cracks and bullseyes but was wondering if I successfully stop the spread, can I drill a hole or two along the crack to help fill the splinter with resin or is that too risky?

It stops glass from further spread. Without it, you have 50/50 chance that spread will progress in the future.
