Love the touch that Bayle basically is doing his own form of dragon communion, feasting on the flesh and hearts of his weaker kin to regain his strength, letting him sprout those communion wings. Shame we don't get to have a wings communion power.
There's a really neat theory about how Bayle is an artificial dragon made by the Nox (by John is a Mimic I think?) and part of it was that the best they made were the Dragonkin Soldiers who look... very similar to Bayle in a lot of aspects, but could only do Cold Lightning but Bayle has Fire Lightning... And its been said Placidusax made Dragon Communion to challenge Bayle but it might have been a bit backwards, since bayle has been eating his kin... So maybe thats where he got the Fire Lightning.
@@kullervo3289 NPC straight up tells you Plasci made the communion and why he made it. Its not speculation territory, the dragon communion history is one of the clearest parts of the lore.
Those wings are not communion, they are part of his powers. Dude I was WAITING for this video, Bayle is one of the bosses I’ve been trying to get a closer look at for days. Everything about him, the torn wings, the bone talon, the tail curled under his side to support his weight due to his missing leg, he’s just SO metal and he’s my favorite fromsoft bossfight. Bayle has officially dethroned Midir as the best dragon fight in the soulslike games.
I still prefer Midir, Bale has too many special effects and in the end he resembles Midir, but Midir himself was like nothing else and hit differently when the game came out. Plus, I think Bayle is too aggressive for such a huge creature, almost approaching the size of Midir's ramzers, but that's just me.
His horns wrap around his skull to protect his eyes, maybe make it harder to reach his nose, and he may be relying on the thickness of his forehead if these are indeed ramming adaptations. His back is effectively lined with teeth, his tail ending with a club. Bayle seems adept at fighting other dragons and giant life forms, albeit moreso defensively. Perhaps that's why he made the horrible choice to strike at Placidusax?
I like how his name is a pun like the Dark Souls DLC Dragons. kalameet-Calamity Sinh- Sin Midir- Murder Bayle- Bale(which means an evil of great destruction)
@@EryadeBeyond0825The first part of Placidusax's name is "placid," which can mean peaceful or non-confrontational. That can be either a testament to his reign as Dragonlord, or an indicator of his status beyond time. Even when we enter his arena, Placidusax waits patiently for us to confirm if we truly wish to fight, allowing us to approach before descending to duel with us. He's non-confrontational, so far as he won't instigate the fight, be he'll sure as hell finish it. As for other dragons, Lansseax can be interpreted as "Lance," which is akin to the "Spear" part of the Ancient Dragons' Lightning Spear. She also loved Vyke, a prominent spear wielder, if I wanna stretch that. I interpret Fortissax as a fourth-wall pun, considering Fortissax's Lightning Spear requires 46 Faith to cast. Fortissax = Forty-six = 46. That's just me, though :P
@@amberhernandez I always interpreted Fortissax's name as being a pun on fortress. In the lore he was known as "The Mightiest Boulderstone," which implied that he was as indomitable and unyielding as a rock. In game he ruthlessly defends Godwin's body, enduring his deathblight affliction like a living wall of stone for the sake of protecting his friends remains On a side note, both Fortissax and Bayle are the only two dragons in Elden Ring that we know of to posses the title of "Dread," which implies that Dread is an important and prestigious title in draconic society, and that Bayle's betrayal led the Fortissax being named the new Dread. That, or it's just any old title given to particular powerful dragons.
@@amberhernandez I believe I picked this up in a Vatii video but the Ancient Dragons names are all latin, with the "Sax" translating to "stone" which makes perfect sense cuz their whole deal is their skin is literal rock. Same thing like you said with Placid, being "calm" and "Forti" in Fortassax translating to "Strong", the Mightiest Boulderstone. I just thought that it was interesting that Bayle, to my knowledge, isn't latin which works as he made the drakes and lesser, non-stone dragons Edit: after a google "Lansse" is indeed "Lance", and Senessax is "Old Rock"

And hearing about Bayle and Placidusax's VIOLENT AND GORY FIGHT THAT WOULDVE REDUCED FARUM AZULA INTO A GIANT MESS OF A CATASTROPHE and looking back at it again, I think we now know why Farum Azula looks fcked up beyond, it's because of these 2 dragons who caused the whole area to become a cataclysmic event that literally tore Farum Azula apart into pieces
Bayle's boss fight is 10 times better just because of Igon's screams in the background. VA really conveyed Igon's unyielding willpower and unsatiable hunger for that dragon heart. Truly peak. Curseee Youuuu Baylllleeeee...
I do wonder if, when in phase two, bayle use the heads of placidusax to caste his new set of wings. The new set doesnt match the placement of the severed ones, but match the placement of the heads of placi. And considering stones scales make ancient dragons timeless in effect, it wouldnt be a far strech to say that bayle summoned the strenght of placi with lightning
He's more or less the father of all drakes according to Florissax stating all drakes of his bloodline are to be sacrifices for dragon communion after his betrayal. And considering he also has lightning, it means he's the precursor to modern drakes while still retaining his ancient dragon heritage
@@DarkDeathMarine that's likely one of his few lightning armament as ancient dragons can shape weapons or even body parts (like Placidusax's lightning claws) out of lightning. And since Bayle needed to take flight, why not lightning wings? Though that's only possible because of his partial heritage as ancient dragon, we know this because only ancient dragons can wield lightning
This design goes so hard. Really is a dragon beat to all hell and still going strong, possibly as strong as he was going before. I also like that the wing with exposed bone is outputting the electricity. Like normally it’d probably flow down pathways in the wings to come out while flying or with a wing swipe, but now. All that energy is just flowing out. And it’s on command too.
The fact he managed to fight against THE dragonlord and not get absolutely obliterated is a testament to say the least. Sure Bayle is missing almost three limbs because of it, but he managed to kill two of Placi's heads. Considering the heads are suggested to be separate thinking entities that work together (they are notably distinct from one another, pretty sure Zullie has a vid on it), that's an insane feat on its own. Only one other head had ever managed to be killed, and that was seemingly ages beyond ages ago.
Bayle is likely heavily inspired by GRRM's two most notorious dragons in his A Song of Ice and Fire series; Balerion the Black Dread, the largest and most powerful of the Targaryen's dragons, and of course the depraved and insane wild dragon known only as "The Cannibal" who killed and fed on other younger dragons and was never once tamed by the Targaryens.
So, at one point placidussax two heads decided to chomp down bayle's body, but he's just evade so sharply that it snaps the head from Placidussax's body. Talk about badass

I love that he's a "wyvern style" kind of dragon, he only has four limbs (mythology and Monster Hunter fans will know what I mean), it shows he's not a typical regal or elder dragon, not with many wings like the ancient dragons, he's just some lowly wyvern who fought his way to the top and became a god-like being by being an absolutely brutal, savage beast.
i think he’s a little more special than a wyvern type dragon. acting as a bridge between the ancient dragons the likes of gransax and the modern wyvern types the likes of greyoll, bayle has, or had, 4 wings and 2 legs. you can see evidence of his 2 other wings through the gaping wounds on his back, shown around 2:15. then, from these wounds, sprouted spectral wings. i believe that these were wings that he lost to placidusax and he resummons them to try and secure victory (and survival). being the first ancient dragon to have 4 wings and only 2 legs probably was what alienated him from the stock, leading to his betrayal. another interesting thing i noted was how greyoll descended from bayle. bayle lost 2 wings, so he passed down the trait of having 4 limbs to the modern dragons, but how? who was his mate? and i think the most likely candidate is actually senessax, an ancient dragon that is sleeping and not hunting bayle, unlike florissax or placidussax. just a theory tho
Lowly wyvern? My man Bayle here is the FIRST Drake. Father to all others after him. Man here lost both wings, both hands, a leg, and sustained many injuries. Sure, he may be mortal, but he ain’t lowly.
@@todd3143 I don't see any evidence of those wounds being related to lost wings, he would clearly have an extra set of shoulders if he used to have wings there, look at 2:48. As much as I love he idea that he was unique for having four wings, I think they'd make it more evident if that was the case. The spectral wings seem more like a superficial ascension to the status of the four-winged ancient dragons. They also overlap with his actual arms, so I think the spectral wings are meant to be what his two actual arms used to look like. His design is very intentionally meant to harken back to a more primitive form of dragon, as you said, he was the ancestor to many, if not all, wyverns.
@@aquagamez1415 not every creature has to be born into power. I meant that the wyverns are lower, more primitive forms of the ancient dragons, they evolved with less limbs, lost their stone scales and lightning powers, and Bayle has a closer look to those lesser wyverns, which makes his legendary power all the more impactful. He held his own against the literal lord of all dragons and vassal of a god.
CURSE YOU, BAYLE! I HEREBY VOW! YOU WILL RUE THIS DAY! BEHOLD, A TRUE DRAKE WARRIOR! YOUR FEARS MADE FLESH! SOLID OF SCALE YOU MIGHT BE, FOUL DRAGON… BUT I WILL RIDDLE WITH HOLES YOUR ROTTEN HIDE! WITH A HAIL OF HARPOONS! WITH EVERY LAST DROP OF MY BEING!
The position of the heads look like Bayle was trying to escape Placidulax's grip. That means Bayle actually lost the fight and tried to escape with a missing leg.
I believe bayle snuck Placi, they fought for some time, bayle was losing so he tried to leave and ripped of the two heads shown here escaping but also losing some limbs and his wings
I doubt it was at the end of the fight. Since if Bayle was in a position to, through sheer force, take off two of Placidusax's heads, then I don't think he was losing at that point in the fight. If I had to guess I'd assume Placidusax lost his heads earlier into the fight when Bayle was mostly intact.
Now just imagine, Igon went toe-to-toe against the only dragon capable of challenging their god, got horribly injured, and decided to go back for round two. Igon is an S-Tier character, easily.
Bayle is so fucking interesting to me. His arena has square sections carved out of the rock, almost like bayle dug himself spaces for spectators should he rematch with Placidusax. His form suggests hes more closely related to the drake style dragons, instead of the ancient style dragons. Perhaps the first, a new breed, which would explain why him and Placidusax fought. A rising challenger of a new breed of dragons seeking to dethrone the ancient ones. His near demonic look i dont know if its natural or due to his insane consumption of other dragons. As another commenter noted, he seems to be performing his own form of dragon communion, feasting on other dragons so he might regain not only its flight, but his power. While writing this, i realized something: bayle is the dragon's equivalent to lucifer. A powerful dragon that tried to fight the most powerful, only to be smote down, broken. Sent down to earth below from heaven above (farum azula). That at least explains his look symbolically.
I only noticed one of the heads during the fight. The detail is outstanding and the lore explaining the battle for power, to usurp Placidusax and their brutal confrontation is just epic. What a boss fight this was.
Ah he isn't "wearing placidusax's heads like a scarf" like I've seen some people describe, its more like the missing heads are death-gripped into his flesh from Bayle wrenching himself free.
If anyone is wondering, all five heads of Placidusax are now accounted for: 2 left on his body, 2 on Bayle, and the last one crashed through the wall where the Godskin Duo is
I think Bayle participated in Ancient Dragon Communion. He ate the hearts of Ancient Dragons he slayed. Even though it's speculation, I think it makes sense given that he uses flame-"lightning" and sprouts another set of wings like Ancient Dragons.
While i like this theory, i don't think ancient dragons have hearts, none of the ancient dragons in game drop hearts and if you check their corpses they seems to lack flesh and blood in generals, their corpses either just petrified or broke apart like statues. They probably not even actually alive in a sense, they seems to make entirely of gravel stone which give them immortality
Easily the most metal boss fight Fromsoft's ever done. Was honestly almost disappointed that I fought him late and it only took me two tries. Damn it felt good though. Out of all the bosses in the DLC which leaned heavily towards spectacle, I'd say this one balanced the spectacle and fairness of the fight the best. It's an absolute visual treat, with so many flashy effects and crazy moves, but it's still very readable, it's not too difficult to dodge his attacks once you get used to his patterns and there aren't any that feel like the boss just decided to press the big ol' "FUCK YOU" button and wipe out your entire health bar in a nigh undodgeable flurry of attacks, unlike a certain _someone_ that may or may not be currently making me look like I've never played a video game in my life.
I love how he has been ripped apart so badly but is still being a force of nature. He is even wearing Placidusax's 2 ripped off head's as a trophies and crowns. He also grows 2 pair of new wings made out of red (or more like orange) lightning. Bro is a chad ngl.
Phase 2 , he grows wings . This implies 2 things. He is most likely an ancient dragon, as he has 2 sets of wings, or becoming one by tyrannical lust for power , possibly by consuming other dragon hearts and evolving . He does seem to lack arms like the ancient dragons, so it makes sense to me that he is more closely related to the regular dragons The second thing his phase 2 could imply is mentioned in his spells flavor text , “Even after being consumed, the throbbing heart of Bayle continues to resist its subjugation, never weakening. One day, the fire within will consume the very body and soul of its Communion devourer. One day.”. Maybe this means his heart is immortal. And his second phase may imply he was regenerating his body and would have been full power again later . The heart mentions it being Biatrial, a joining of the hearts 2 atriums and enlarged growth, although that is normally caused in people because of underlying health problems, I don’t know why Bayle’s heart was this way .
Yes that placidusax had 4 heads but then Bayle and placidusax fought, both getting injured in the process. That’s why when you fight placidusax he has 2 heads instead of 4
Placi bit into Bayle with two of his 5 heads and Bayle ripped them off while they were biting him. When Ancient Dragons die they actually turn to stone instead of fading to mist, that's just a gameplay mechanic. So when Placis heads died while biting Bayle, they turned to stone still biting him so Bayle is forever stuck with them on his hide.
So metal, Placidusax's heads are still biting into Bayles body after all this time and being ripped off. I wish I could have seen that fight between the two of them.
this is where that "i dont make gross designs" comes into play, for such a mutilated creature with multiple wounds, fromsoftware manages to give it a threatening look, focusing on how this creature's hatred is so strong it will power it to continue fighting with all of its will using what little he has left instead of focusing on "blood blood violent", looks like a veteran where the wounds have healed in whatever inconvenient way they were open, even leaving the biting eternal heads of his nemesis still stuck to his own body, even improvising a new combat style with its crippled body I wouldnt be surprised if other studios would rather have a dragon with gaping wounds gushing blood arround instead. Bayle truly looks like a beast of legendary tales, something worthy of being called "the dread" "the tyrant"

@@mathewklatil5455 the communion is basically "Fuck you Bayle and the rest of your lesser kin"
Those wings are not communion, they are part of his powers. Like all ancient dragons can shape weapons with their lightning, Bayle could shape a new pair of wings with his limited power over it

Exactly what i said. Midir has finally been dethroned.
True
Yeah bayle is fucking incredible. They nailed everything about him. I cant decide who is better between him and midir, both are absolutely perfect.
Bayles not even a dragon, he's a big drake. Midir best dragon.

I like how his name is a pun like the Dark Souls DLC Dragons.
kalameet-Calamity
Sinh- Sin
Midir- Murder
Bayle- Bale(which means an evil of great destruction)
So Placidusax is Flaccud Sacks?
In game he ruthlessly defends Godwin's body, enduring his deathblight affliction like a living wall of stone for the sake of protecting his friends remains
On a side note, both Fortissax and Bayle are the only two dragons in Elden Ring that we know of to posses the title of "Dread," which implies that Dread is an important and prestigious title in draconic society, and that Bayle's betrayal led the Fortissax being named the new Dread.
I just thought that it was interesting that Bayle, to my knowledge, isn't latin which works as he made the drakes and lesser, non-stone dragons
Edit: after a google "Lansse" is indeed "Lance", and Senessax is "Old Rock"
Midir always sounded a bit like "Meteor" to me.

His design was already fantastic, but carrying both Placidussax heads on him is just wicked
Bayle's boss fight is 10 times better just because of Igon's screams in the background. VA really conveyed Igon's unyielding willpower and unsatiable hunger for that dragon heart. Truly peak.

That jagged jaw and sharp chin looks identical to ancient dragon, cool details that implaies he's once part of it
He's more or less the father of all drakes according to Florissax stating all drakes of his bloodline are to be sacrifices for dragon communion after his betrayal. And considering he also has lightning, it means he's the precursor to modern drakes while still retaining his ancient dragon heritage
I mean hell, in phase 2 he literally rages so hard that he makes himself an ancient dragon( 4 wings), just without the extra arms.
@@DarkDeathMarine that's likely one of his few lightning armament as ancient dragons can shape weapons or even body parts (like Placidusax's lightning claws) out of lightning. also i never Realized the 2nd head of Placidusax were being there, cool detail.
The fact that he uses his tail to prop up the side of his body the leg is missing from is so badass.
Maybe pulling a Seathe while your entire race was waning and challenging Placidusax was a bad idea.

Wow... After looking at this video, I didn't realize how messed up Bayle really looks. The Dragonlord was absolutely serious in retaliation.

I wish I could see this majestic creature in his prime.
Bayle having 2 of Placidusax's heads around his neck is metal as fuck
For a dragon, who attacks viciously and is the most aggressive, he has suprisingly calm face.

Also, horns. Maybe he has ties with the crucible?
Moreover, the arena looks like the architecture of Farum Azula. Bayle carved it up to look like his old home.
Thank you! It's exactly the video I was waiting for :)

Local Dragon Literally Too Angry To Die
I feel bad for Placidusax. He lost two heads to Bayle and another in a tragic jetski accident

The strongest wyverns fly without wings.
Would phantom wings be a prayer close to the various aspects of the crucible?
He's eating other dragons. A dragon doing dragon communion. That's how he gets the wings.
Phase 2 , he grows wings . This implies 2 things. He is most likely an ancient dragon, as he has 2 sets of wings, or becoming one by tyrannical lust for power , possibly by consuming other dragon hearts and evolving . He does seem to lack arms like the ancient dragons, so it makes sense to me that he is more closely related to the regular dragons
The second thing his phase 2 could imply is mentioned in his spells flavor text , “Even after being consumed, the throbbing heart of Bayle continues to resist its subjugation, never weakening. One day, the fire within will consume the very body and soul of its Communion devourer. One day.”. Maybe this means his heart is immortal. And his second phase may imply he was regenerating his body and would have been full power again later .
The heart mentions it being Biatrial, a joining of the hearts 2 atriums and enlarged growth, although that is normally caused in people because of underlying health problems, I don’t know why Bayle’s heart was this way .
those damages done to him must have been beyond painful. i assume he can still fly. how is he still alive
