JOEPRESSO: Real espresso with the Aeropress? First impression & mini review

- The Joepresso is a new gadget on Kickstarter.
There has always been a lot of talk about the AeroPress and Espresso, but nobody has real ever been able to pull it off. At least not convincingly.
But maybe that's about to change?
The Joepresso utilizes a pressurized portafilter, which can hold up to 14 grams of coffee.
The results are impressive if you ask me.
Check out Joepresso on Kickstarter if you want to make espresso with your Aeropress at home.

Do you think this is a game-changer for budget espresso? Are you gonna back it on Kickstarter?
No, not for espresso. I think it is an interesting thing to "toy with" but if you are that coffee crazy to invest into such campaigns, you probably already either have an espresso maker or would want higher quality shots. I can see it for milk+coffee drinks for travelling though. They now ship it with a non-pressurized basket too, but the Aeropress itself can only generate about 0.5 bar of pressure if you press hard (see their own FAQs: aeropress.com/faq/what-is-the-pressure-in-bars-that-the-aeropress-makes-coffee-at-asking-for-a-friend-from-jackson-b/), so I have my doubts using an unpressurized basket would do much good. Maybe also if your workplace just doesn't have a decent coffee maker. One thing though: For once I have seen a good application of a pressurized porta-filter.
Inventor here. Just wanted to say thank you for the review and thank everyone for their support. Also, wanted to mention that you can froth milk with the Joepresso and Joepresso Pro comes with a non-pressurized basket if you wish to get more involved and have an espresso grinder.
Don't forget to support us on Kickstarter, just 11 days left!
Thanks for letting my try, Roman. Good luck with reaching the goal!
It seems that you need more fitted screen to the basket before jumping to the pro version.
@@ShurikGi We intend to have a better fitting screen, but can't source one for prototype.
@@123romanr i have a question, how can it make 6-9 bars of pressure though? wouldn't it be hard since the 'tube' is wide?
@roman I'm sold! Kickstarter is over, where do I send my $$ to? 👍 (Landed here by way of Reddit)
I don't think anyone would expect the Aeropress to ever compete with a true espresso machine but this seems like a super cool way to get pretty close at home, especially if you want to make home made milk drinks with french press frothed milk
Yes, for the many people who make "espresso" with moka pots, capsules or Prismo, this seems like the better option.
Just subscribed, love the honesty!
Great in depth video. This device looks pretty legit for travelling. Was it relatively easy to press the device down?
btw the loud slurping gets me every time, especially because you seem like such a soft spoken, polite guy haha
Yeah, it's enough to press down, especially if you're standing, then you can just lean on it with body weight. The loud slurping is a bad habit from too much cupping :)
Thanks for bringing it to our attention Asser. I have a starter espresso machine, and a Minipresso, but I love when innovation comes to coffee, as a former coffee entrepreneur. I trust your good taste, I backed it up. Excited to taste it.
That's great to hear! Hope you enjoy it.
I'm thinking of supporting it for travel. I generally just take an Aeropress and a cheap grinder with me along with some beans (though one my first stops, wherever I am, is generally to seek out a local roaster). Being able to have even a quasi-espresso as a change of pace would be great. I have a Nanopresso and it's okay for quasi-espresso, but carrying one thing instead of two is always preferable. Besides, I like gadgets. I had a Breville Barista Express I never bonded with and when it died recently I went for a Cafelat Robot and 1Zpresso JX PRO. No regrets about that decision.
It won't take up much space in the bag, so it's definitely great for travel. I usually bring the Aeropress Go, Tetra Drip & Jx for a minimal setup, but Joepresso will come along for the the next trip :)
The AeroPress ecosystem is simple and very creative. Nice video, amigo.
Thanks for bringing to our attention this product Asser. It seems interesting. I have a starter espresso machine, and a Minipresso, but I love when innovation comes to coffee, as a former coffee entrepreneur. Trust your good taste, I backed it up. The shipping as always is crazy to Mexico haha.
Thank you for backing Javier. It's really hard to get shipping costs down as a start-up. We hope to get better rates or a local distributor once we get going.
Roman Rabinovich No worries Roman! It would have been even worse if no shipping happened at all to Mexico (like the Niche Zero). Best of luck! Do you guys have Twitter or Instagram to follow?
@@javierrayon8808 we're on Instagram, joepressocoffee
very helpful review Asser!
Looks like a great option if you have an aeropress and most likely it will make more pleasant coffee than the Nespresso and the Moka pot!
IF you have an espresso grinder and a Kompresso already, that probably would not make sense to add it to your equipment.
Do I make sense?
Hi Stefano, yes that's also how I see it. And then it's always fun to try add-on gadgets to see how much can be done with the Aeropress.
I'm gad you reviewed this. I was thinking whether I should back this or not. And yes, would love for you to review crowdfunding coffee items in the future (before the crowdfunding ends so that we can know if it's a good product or not!)
Thanks, Waison. For crowdfunding it will have to be a careful consideration of each campaign, but good to hear there's some interest!
@@coffeechronicler that's true! Small items makes sense. Bigger items like grinders or electric brewers might be more challenging.
@@Waisonian Exactly!
@@coffeechronicler Actually, if you could do a side-by-side comparison (and a review at the same time) of Joepresso and Coffeejack, that would be awesome: www.indiegogo.com/projects/coffeejack-the-pocket-sized-barista/x/17128359?fbclid=IwAR2y3hWCinW0Sv0hSdI1x1OrWZ0ejwY00_4MxlPv-49h__F64huG5J0YTIY#/
Would love to know what was going through your head while pressing? Looked like a mixture of surprise and WTF?😃 I like the idea that with a cheap(ish) add-on I can vary whatever coffee I feel like making without going down a rabbit hole, as you so aptly put it. If you say it approaches or comes close to an espresso that is good enough for me.
Haha, it makes a kind of weird hissing sound when pressing, so that's probaby why I looked a bit worried!
Yes, if the alternative is to make a shot with a moka pot, Nespresso, or sub $100 espresso-machine, then my vote definitely goes for this one.
I like the idea and I am leaning towards supporting it because I’m all for fun new coffee gadgets. But other than people like us, I wonder who it’s for. I feel like some might get turned away by the fuss of it and others will quickly upgrade to a flair, cafelat robot, or real machine. It doesn’t seem that well suited for travel either.
I'm always surprised whenever I check out the Aeropress groups on Facebook. There are actually many "non-specialty" people who like to use it for espresso style coffee, so think there should be a pretty big audience for it.
It seems less fussy than a flair to me. Although I don't think it's really competing with them.
The flair can absolutely produce full fat espresso where as I feel the Joe presso is more of an Aeropress booster.
As in I think the people who might be interested are those who already have an Aeropress.
If it gets funded though, it does just add yet another way to brew with what is already the world's most versatile brewer m
@@marcusannegarn8497 Yeah, I think the Flair is something quite different. Maybe it's competing with the Flair Neo, though :)
To get the taste of a decent GutShot.. ( un Cafe from any little bar near fleet landing in Napoli, prolly 7 grams of LaVazza or funkier robusta blend stretched almost four to one )
With the Pismo it took 30 grams of coffee and 58 grams of water.
Texture still was a little thin. Taste was on point. Better with fresh roast and decent grind.
Needed a paper filter on top of prismo screen for any clean shot even grinding with c2.
My first though is that this looks more like a weapon than a coffee brewer to someone not familiar with the aeropress.
Haha, it's actually excellent as a water gun!
Have you tried it with the new non pressurized baskets? What do you think of that?
apparently one can fit regular 51mm baskets in it.
What did you think of the clean up compared to the prismo?
A bit more work since the grounds can get a bit stuck in the basket. It also gets pretty hot, so you have to run it under cold water or let it cool for some minutes before cleaning. Overall, it's about the same as with the Flair or Robot.
@@coffeechronicler the pro comes with a non-pressurized basket so the puck pops right out. The reason the puck doesn't come out is the pressurized basket, it creates suction.
@@123romanr It also helps to stop the press when the high pitched hiss begins. Then the puck is a bit more wet and easy to knock out
Can you give us a review for kompresso
Can I get good espresso with kompresso and timemore c2?
I will probably make a Kompresso video later.
However, Timemore C2 isn't really suitable for espresso. The burrs are created to grind coarser, so it takes forever to grind enough for a shot, and you don't have settings enough for a proper dial-in
The slurping 😂
I can see that they're using moka pot gasket 😁
Good eye
Haha, didn't think about that, but you're probably right!
Roman Rabinovich it's a good thing... Easier to get replacement 👍
Looks like a pressure basket of sorts, not real espresso. But it shouldn't be surprising because a thin piece of plastic like Aeropress shouldn't be able to handle 9 bars of pressure without cracking, breaking or exploding at some point. I'm curious how much they're going to try to charge for this.
It's pressurized, which normally means not that great. But I was surprised by the texture and flavor of this - in my world it's real espresso. The price for Kickstarter backers is $40.
@@coffeechronicler That is pretty interesting, like being at a cusp of espresso. How hard do you have to press down with this? Do you at some point feel that it's too much pressure on the cup or the Aeropress? Or if the cup might skip out from pressing too hard?
@@hyojoonus I press pretty hard, probably around 20 kg of weight. I'm not really worried about the Aeropress, but I'd more careful about choosing the right cup. But so far no accidents :)
Not suggesting anybody does this, but by my unprofessional calculations the AeroPress should be able to withstand roughly 9 bars, based on pipe wall thickness and material used. Also, I've seen videos of people using a lever to press espresso with AeroPress. It's likely dangerous and even if you get away with it a few times, over time it could give and explode. Having said that, low pressure extraction can produce espresso, at least according to some definition of espresso and especially with dark roasts.
@@123romanr Thank you for the calculation and he info. I will have to look up people taking a lever to Aeropress. Now that there's a espresso adapter, maybe they should release a full metal Aeropress. I use flair at home, and I agree, it's not all 9bar all the time.
The crema is only visual indication of some parameters,it does nothing for the taste beside making the coffee bitter.
That's true, but in this case it's useful to determine if it's more than just another 'faux-presso' device.
