This was such an interesting conversation, love hearing Meadowlark’s stance on getting a footing in the modern era of statistics and monetizing viewership. Owner’s are entitled to bragging rights, power and capitalization of what they are producing! Seriously in-depth 🙌🏼

Thoughtful show, appreciate you sharing your time!! Definitely got me thinking.
If Nielsen can’t nudge numbers they’re useless. Long time coming.
SMU would give every dime to be elevated back into national prominence, matters more to them then money. If you don’t know how that works it may be hard or impossible to understand. Some things in life matter that much to people.
NBA isn’t going to shake the sheets for shekels when they’re in the process of building an international sports brand. NFL, who can’t do that, and has in the last few years specifically hung their hats on highest ratings are more inclined to fight for their right to keep saying that.
Commercials have always been a boom bust proposition, for the makers and sellers. Very few actually clearly benefit the company using them and everyone is cool taking the risk up until it fails and then they blame the risk instead of themselves.
Piracy is a gateway to access for people who wouldn’t have it otherwise. In digital media piracy changed how content is now made and accessed for the better (more of it, more available, expectations raised for quality and access). These illegal views are so important to the content makers that they use them in their marketing. Like how GoT used to track the illegal download numbers because they knew those actual people are the word of mouth momentum that actually empowered the media. As they sorta pointed out Apple themselves figured out that providing clear and easy access is the most effective way to handle piracy. If a company doesn’t make their product available in ways that match the consumers needs then this will happen with product that can easily be copied and disseminated.
There’s a big difference between repurposing content for new content and using someone else’s content as your own. It could be argued that it’s one of the biggest issues of digital media right now. Traditional media companies coming into these conversations with their own ideas and biases towards new media don’t help. When they assimilate and become community members maybe. Would be a nice conclusion to the meaningless divide between the two. The rift never should have happened, and I believe our collective media literacy will improve once we are back to a proper modern fourth estate that covers the wide range of thought and perspective. Going to be hard for traditional media who like Nielsen have enjoyed unnatural control in this space to let go of that and move on. But y’all can do it, we believe in you 🙌🏼 except Samson, gonna give himself a heart attack before admitting small steps are meaningful and life is more then what restricts us. WNBA for example is finally getting some of the NBA off-season attention as their talent and women’s basketball’s national profile has risen, and not once were they ever just cheered on for it without overwhelming cynicism and nastiness in response (still largely the case but improved just enough to call in an improvement!). Your cynicism, yours personally, has an affect on the world. Be careful how you wield it.

The way you end piracy is by 2 ways: Making the content more affordable for the consumer and by giving the consumers what they want.
Considering what I've seen, not just in sports, but the entertainment world ... there are no plans to do either. So all I gotta say to UFC, MLB, NBA, NFL and any other sports or entertainment property looking to end piracy: GOOD LUCK. 😂

The current upheval in college football going on is the perfect moment to create a two tiered conference, with promotion and relegation. If schools on the outside want in, they can win their way in. If schools jusyt want to coast on their conference's TV money can drop down.
This really about getting one 64 team super conference, or larger. If you use promotion and regulation to not only assemble leagues, but for scheduling, it becomes an even better product. If we could just end the requirement of being enrolled at said school, it would be perfect.

One of the things I wished that they talked about is the difficulty of using subscription online streaming models versus pirated models and how subscription streaming models have to be just as easy to use as pirated options. MLB and NBA are doing a good job of this. Also, cost. The Nigeria stat that Skipper talked about should also be a sign that pricing of those subscriptions need to be more reasonable for the populous.

Not surprising that they're missing a point about pirating. Speaking from experience, even if you have money and willing to fork them. A lot of services make it very hard or impossible to get that access or straight up limit it with the stuff like blackout rules or you can watch only on certain devices or need certain package from certain provider to get access. So, your only choice is to watch a pirate stream or move on to something else. They will be the first to admit, watching pirate stream is better for a sport than potential customer moving on to something else. Those leagues and cable companies are fighting a pointless battle.

Literally no one on the planet who isn’t a shareholder in a streaming company gives one whit about illegal streaming of sporting events. The government shouldn’t lift one finger to protect these companies making billions as it is.

Seems to me that the various and sundry providers - streamers, cable companies, networks, etc. - would be a little reticent to share proprietary data with their competitors. So it stands to reason these companies would benefit from establishing an industry supported, non-profit, non-stakeholding, third party data clearinghouse that parses, filters, and disseminates the viewership and other data to each member. Think Underwriters Laboratories (funded by insurance companies), the Official Airline Guide, Apollo and Sabre, etc. (subscribed to by the airlines), BMI/ASCAP for music, or an extended mission version of Nielsen to fulfill the viewer verification process you guys talk about here. Good subject...

Whole conversation misses the point. American consumers have no problem paying for any streaming service if the price is in line with a quality product/service. For a lot of country sports streaming services aren't worth a damn because you'll always miss content because TV contracts override streaming so you get a lot of blackouts.

What should have been illegal is ESPN strong arming cable providers to pay outrageous carriage fees on bundles of channels that many customers never wanted but were forced to have any way. I'm sure John has a different view on that because he was making billions and it's okay to be greedy when you're the one making money off people but it's not when someone is making money off of you.

I love David Samson, well not love but you know what I mean. But his knowledge of college football and the business of college football sucks. You cannot tell me that any university would be happy with playing in the pinesol bowl in Butte Montana rather than being in the ACC or whatever power 4 conference. That is nothing short of absolutely absurd! Not to mention the financial advantages.
