- In Pakistan, thousands of people have benefited from solar panel incentives which the government introduced seven years ago. But with the government now considering change, those benefits may soon end. Kamran Yousaf has more.

All policies and laws in Pakistan are made to benefit the 'selected few'. In this particular instance when the power policy was made the pretext was that electricity is so expensive ( generated by private power producers ) and extremely burdensome to ordinary citizens. so households should be allowed to generate their own electricity through these Solar panels at their homes. And at the same time it's environment friendly...
But at the background , Before the announcement of the policy, all the imports and manufacturing sources were monopolised by the families of ' selected few' ...
Now when people have made substantial investments in domestic Solar generation ( keeping in view long term savings), they want to tax it now to rob the poor again..
Everyone knows how 'Private Power Generation Projects' were established in the country and how it broke the backbone of economy.. For decades this corruption has plagued the society.
Stealing from poor and giving it to rich has a long history in Pakistan...
Ironically, History is going to repeat itself...
Well said. As an economist myself I second everything
Ture 👍🏻
I think you can go off grid if the grid is getting very expensive
True! I think off grid will be the solution during current Pakistan's situation. We all know the feudal policymakers are extremely corrupt and retarded as well.
Other countries encourages renewable sources while these stpd policymakers are discouraging and producing electricity by rental diesel/oil generators.

Shameful act to discourage solar energy
Nawaz Khanzeer's PMLN and Zardari Dacoit PPP made agreements with power producers in 90s. that produce power. we use it or not the government will pay you. now people with solar no more use their energy so burden of cost is now on common man. plus they own half the companies. how they would make money if people start using solar energy?
Sindh government would not allow any other utility company other than KE because it pays money to their political parties and if any other company would want to establish power system in Karachi they would charge them absurd amount of taxes. Shame on them.

This move to reduce solar net metering credits is at the behest of the IPPs who have bribed a hefty amount to the bureaucracy. The Govt and bureaucracy only make policies that has some kickbacks. Solar is just 0.3% of the energy generated and their greed deems this intolerable. What of the cheap energy bought from solar producers? Why don't the others get cheaper electricity when the grid buys it so cheaply? Why sell at exorbitant price?
Governments support of energy is good for companies, not for ordinary people.More profits for companies...Pakistan is an energy rich country but now feeding solar panel manufacturing companies, mostly Chinese.
solar subscribers are growing fast nowadays, not only in Islamabad but also in Lahore, Karachi, Multan, Sialkot, thar, and in all over Pakistan. we will produce not 20 gaga watts but more shortly. and we are working on it. also looking towards wind farms as well.

As a Pakistani we are paying $300 electricity bill if we consume 500 units. We can't run ac properly and temperature in summer 45 to 51
Poor will pay the bill the rich will become independent and would not suffer the high cost which be pushed towards the poor who can't afford he solar set up
If the government is so concerned about the poor population of the country, then they would have avoided the expensive power purchase agreement from private power producers .
Poor can install solar using loans
Nobody is stopping them
Only their lackluster and unproductive mindset is
It's likely that Pakistan government will ban the use of renewable energy, a major share of which comes from solar.
I wish more country implement this kind of grant, and more research are focused on cheap efficient solar panel. Surely it will be more productive than funding wars ?

Trt good job. Covering media in Pakistan
I have the solar installed. Last month I used 110Kwh and produced 546Kwh. My bill is mere -1300. Govt is buying the surplus units at extremely low cost.
my neighbour in Karachi installed solar panels . During Eid they went to Dubai on holiday, when they returned in a week all the panels and the batterys were stolen. This is common in Karachi, nothing is safe
I am energy engineer, doing interconnection and net metering in USA ( remote job ) , electric department of my province is in front of my house but i am not able to connect with grid
I honestly have never seen any nation fall as badly as Pakistan.. so sad to see how everyone does stupid things without any proper research .
Its high time people come out to protest just like Azad Kashmir, solar can be a game changer for 90% of Pakistans population once done,EV vehicles, bikes will be easy to buy.once these initiatives are achieved half of thr problems will be solved.
Time for new battery technology... PV is good, but needs 24/7 operations to work correctly.
Result: Protest in AJK
Price reduction in solar panel are a blessing for consumers. From last 2 months prices are sharply drop down and purchase of solar system are up with sky rocket speed thats a positive sign for renewable energy in Pakistan.
We are very thankful of Chinese people they giving us solar system in cheap prices.

Not only solar everything in Pakistan is on risk
Shame on Govt. instead of giving benefits if they put tax on solar energy.
A great nation being decimated by a corrupt few
Pakistan has Chinese power plants contracted to supply power at high rates which will become unviable if solar grows. CPEC will become unviable....😂😂
Not really. Pakistan government made contracts dating back to 90s that accelerated in late 2000s which have proved unfavorable in long term. Power generation companies were allowed to install power plant and were to be paid by capacity payment model i.e capacity of their power generation rather than actual production. These aggressive agreements were not such a concern for a long time because Pakistan's projected growth was expected to use all of the energy that was to be added to national grid. That however didn't happen because of the war on terrorism that slowed down the economy significantly. Other limiting factor is the aging distribution network. Pakistan at the moment produces more electricity than it needs but a large chunk of it is wasted as line loses because of old distribution network that is in dire need of an upgrade and can't handle the extra generation of electricity. Which ultimately means, people have to pay for electricity they are not even using i.e expensive electricity per unit. And that results in more people installing solar systems in a bid to lower their bills which results in even more expensive electricity as less usage from grid means less people paying for total production of electricity i.e capacity payments. It's a vicious cycle and nothing to do with CPEC but rather shortsighted government policies of the time.
@@AliSherrr stolen energy also gets added to the line losses which makes the number much higher than it would be normally the infra is bad but not as bad as they make it by including stolen energy. They should crack down on the thieves instead of just rolling the cost into regular bills.
@@talhaakram you don't get the point. This isn't about line losses or theft of electricity at all. Those happen everywhere. The problem is that infrastructure is unable to handle the load of electricity Pakistan can produce at the moment. Surely you must remember the countrywide blackout that happened a couple years back. That was because of infrastructure being unable to handle our national load. Pakistan already has a system in place where localities with low electricity payments and theft are subjected to higher loadshedding hours but that's not really a solution to our poor distribution infrastructure problem. If we want to lower capacity payments, we have to utilize all the electricity that is being produced. And for that be possible, we have to have distribution lines capable of delivering full production capacity to consumers. Or government has to renegotiate their contracts with power companies.
Tum lindus har waqt china ko har cheez ma hate Q deta hu😂😂😂
you don't know anything about pakistan, believe me. Pakistan does not have china power plant working, there are IPP power plants which were installed in 1996 and government politicians made kickback money to give handsome contract to those IPP companies. which burden pakistani people.
Congrats 👏👏 Pak Abdul arihabis
Nice to see Waseem abbassi
You didn't mention the policy of IPPs (Independent Power Producer) companies, which produce electricity and sell it to Government of Pakistan.
The agreement between govt. and these IPPs is crucial. The govt. has to pay the agreed amount to IPPs despite the usage of electricity, either it's lower or higher. Payment depends upon their (IPPs) electricity production. Which means Govt has to pay the the amount at any cost whether people use it or not.
This is the reason, govt. apply multiple taxes on electricity.
We, people don't understand why Government doesn't terminate this agreement to relief the nation.
After terminating this agreement, Govt. should emphasize on installing SOLAR systems, so people can sell their extra power to govt. And Govt. doesn't have to apply hefty taxes.
This will force individuals to not enable green Meter
U are going to needs a lot of good batteries to store all those energy
Let's always do alot of good ❤️
We will apeal Supereme Court and Persue case against Distribution companies.
This country is in the throes of one of the worst economic crisis of its history and it’s ruling elites priority is still to squeeze the middle class and poor peoples incomes. It’s inevitable that the bankruptcy of this country will happen.
500 unit bill is 1500000 rupes
Technically government is not wrong because if all higher middle classes start selling electricity back to the govt then all capacity charges of power stations would be on poor only because they have no capacity to install solar panels and generate electricity but end up buying expensive electricity from the govt. best policy should be to privatize energy companies and let them handle it smartly. Govt should just focus on governance not on generating electricity.
