If you're claiming the reviewer is one of those gamers whose imagination/patience has been ruined, may I please direct you to: 2:48 - 3:44 And entire segment dedicated to applauding the lack of waypoints/teleportation/handholding in favor of organic world building.
I disagree. The atmosphere, the tone of these games are still unique in presentation, and the calm nature of the game makes me appreciate the craftsmanship that went into it, to this day. It’s odd that certain indie games that get lauded for their easy going nature are praised, while one of its founding fathers is lambasted for it. I suppose expectations for a game that presents itself as a martial arts epic might be dashed when the game turns out to be more melodramatic investigation action - especially in this day and age - but if you can absorb and appreciate it as a whole, it’s pretty damn glorious. At least in my opinion. I’ll take this over Call of Battlefield whatever any day.
Peter Glagowski I suppose it’s because games in that genre, though extremely popular, are usually uninspired and creatively brain dead, and overshadow more creative works that truly do deserve recognition. Shenmue, for all its faults, was/is a daring, creative game, that evokes a feeling in many that reminds us of the ambitious imagination that once ruled the industry. That’s worth more to me than the manufactured, cynical nonsense that people eat up and call great these days. I personally never had a problem with the combat, even though I agree that they provide you with a move set that isn’t really useful. About the QTEs...well, there’s plenty of games that penalize the player for screwing up. Repeating a QTE is pretty much on par with a boss regaining a quarter of its life back. Frustrating, but not game breaking. And the score you gave it based on how irked you were by these flaws, despite seemingly praising most of part 2, seems objectively harsh.
Complains that 1 does not have enough action then complains 2 has too much. Complains 1 has too complex combat then complains the combat is too simple in 2. And so on...
So basically, this review bogs down to "game's too tedious for me, therefore it's mediocre". Well, when you can't appreciate a game that takes it's time to try and immerse the player into its world, then you shouldn't be playing video games; it's a complete show of a lack of patience on the OP's part. Don't take this guy's word for it; play it yourself and see how wrong he is about this game.
First game is great, the second is alright i just wish it had as much detail as the first game but thats to expected considering shenmue 1 almost bankrupted sega lol so it happens i can forgive it. But to be honest the game has a few bugs luckily that are being patched soon so i cant wait for that
Matthew Lugo essentially the second post is bigger, has more fights and a bit more in everything... Except for the empathy and connection with the characters. The first game is boring for some, but manages you will connect emotionally with characters. The second part has more places to go, bigger locations and much more characters, but loses the emotional connection to specific characters that you'd expect after the first game. I think shenmue 2 is great, but somewhat different in terms of emotions. But the final part weighs it up a bit, as you walk through the forests and mountains with shenhua. That part is very slow, but reminded me a bit more of the first part. The slowdown to get you to connect with her, the Iron to decide whether you want or won't interrupt her singing. Many may feel its boring, but if you catch the feeling I think it's rather enjoyable for the slow pace,... Shenmue is mir for thoseim that have the necessary pacience and love for detailed exploration, rather then just hunting down goals or waypoints... Speedruns are very popular nowadays, which leaves clear that many players won't have the pacience to really enjoy the game
I agree with the critics about the sound, the controls even back then where a bit wooden (like controlling a tank), and yes, fighting several persons at a time in Shenmue 2 is not well resolved controlwise. Also I agree that they should at least have given the option to do a bit of training in some places, just to keep control over buttons /movements. Nonetheless, despite its many flaws, I believe its still worth playing nowadays. The emotion and feeling transmitted in the first game (not despite but thanks to the slow pace) did make so many fall in love with the game. The second game looses a bit of the emotional connection, but makes a nice job to sipped up the story and drive the tale onward. The last part slows down drastically, no fights at all left, which will be boring for some, but it builds up a connection with shenhua, with the legend of the mirrors and the back story of her and Ryo, so it was a very welcome part for me, despite being so different to the rest of shenmue 2. lets see if yu Suzuki manages to get shenmue 3 having the right vibe (seeing the latest trailer I'd say yes) better controls and a better balanced pacing. The latter two I'm quite convinced he'll make better too on shenmue 3, even though some fans of the original will claim "this ain't shenmue anymore" :) but I think it is important to modernize it, but conserving the essence that made people love it in the fist place... The ambience, the music and the emotion it transmitted to the player, and the feeling that you are not bound to just hunt down certain goals or waypoints... But the freedom to explore at your own pace (up to a certain point that is)
I don't think this game was necessarily meant for gamers that have never played the games before. Of course it is very much a dated game compared with more recent games but you have to review this from a 1999 lens.
This is a very well-rounded and fair review. It brings up a lot of strengths and a lot of weaknesses that the author felt, without outright disrespecting what the game signified for gaming nor dismissing the hardcore fans of it. I'm pretty sure the hate I'm seeing in the comments lobbed towards this review didn't watch the whole thing and just stopped at the initial minute or something. Trust me, the first minute or so is not an indicator of the rest of the review. It's not a glowing one, but again, it's fair and balanced.
So should sonic the hedgehog and mario bro's re releases be given a 5 out of 10 because they are dated and the devs should keep updating the originals to compete with modern games?
I loved Shenmue back in the day and playing it now, there's just something awesome about experiencing it then and now. Shenmue 2 I liked more as you went to Hong Kong and could do more activies like arm wrestle, gamble, fighting.
I wont rip apart your whole video as you're entitled to your opinion. But honestly half of your complaints are because you are a bad player. The combat is soooo much better than you gave it credit for, and judging on your footage, it's because you're awful. Same with many if your control complaints...
remember how everyone was screaming for them to re-release this for like 10 years and now that its out everyone thinks its not that great anymore. lmao. ive never played it personally.
I think what hes trying to say is people like triple A games over these games that are a piece of gaming history and way ahead of its time. Another thing i think most people cant do is put your mind for when the game came out and appreciate it that way, people will judge it hard cause its not action paced, its not grand theft auto or witcher size but thats why i love it cause its big but you can familiarize yourself with every location in shenmue 1 and 2. I think thats what hes trying to say
Good review. I've never played them and this informed me it's not for me. I obviously respect the history and impact the game had in it's time but it seems this version is only for hardcore fanboys who already played it.
SUMMER 2022 UPDATE: I beat Shenmue 1 on a real Dreamcast on a 480p VGA CRT monitor, I loved it, I hated it! But I am glad I beat it and excited to finish part 2 sometime before 2029.
Oh really? It was Shenmue that pretty much paved the way for the HUGELY successful GTA series, so no, Yakuza didn't do this better and I've yet to play that game or the series as a whole.
I enjoy both franchises but theyre both distinctly different from another, other then sharing some semantics I don't see why you're comparing them this way (by saying one replaces the other). Imo they produced a well-made and affordable package and most of all: preserved the original games and made them affordable.
i never said liking Shenmue is wrong. i just said Yakuza is a better game. its a personal preferrence thing. i played both shenmue that just came out. i also now going though Yakuza Kiwami 2. Let me tell you now i want to play more Yakuza than Shenmue.
Yakuza would not exist without shenmue. You can't take a more modern game that borrowed heavily from the game before and praised it for being the better game without considering the time that it was released. Yakuza is more of a Streets of Rage with story elements. Shenmue is a point-and-click life simulator with martial arts sections.
@@SushiCombo No I disagree, I'd much rather play Shenmue over Yakuza but as I say they're two totally different games with only some simularities. It's true that Yakuza has done things better than Shenmue but I disagree that it's a better game at all, in my eyes Shenmue's a much better game and in some ways Shenmue is miles ahead of Yakuza.
You are definitely wrong. I never played Shenmue before the collection and I love it.

Time skip and area teleportation have ruined gamers imagination/patience.

Not the greatest gaming but it’s one of the best experiences
How is this guy so horrible at the combat? That's like the best feature of the first two games and what is sorely missing from Shenmue III.
Ive never seen it’s depth of dialogue and lack of handholding done better in modern games

If they're not fun for the player, yes, they deserve a 5/10. You shouldn't give pity points just because they're old.

There's only 1,000 views for this with 127k subscribers? That means less than 1% of them showed up to watch this lol.
That shows how little interest most people have for Shenmue.
