Piloting a Ball well against a mobile suit is a very rare feat, which makes Shiro a good pilot, and he did it even though he's not a Newtype. Which could explain his skills as a Gundam pilot later on.

Not only should his Ball have been blown up here, but he also later survives a Zaku firing its 120mm gun at him by dodging the round, at point-blank. Not only should he have been hit, even the overpressure of the propellant gases and the shockwave of the round passing that close to him should have popped his organs like grapes in a hydraulic press.
@@HermitAeon All good protagonists have a good case of plot armor, lol. I think a case of plot armor that was more egregious than this scene, was him surviving the last battle of the series. That's a real head scratcher.
The RB-79 Ball was originally a worker pod, something for construction work on space stations and colonies. The Earth Federation took it, up armored it and stuck a 180 mm recoilless cannon on the top of it. The one in the video as NeoXNeo2007 said, is the Type K, which is actually an early version of the Ball and is better armored then a normal Ball and most other late production models. It replaced the single cannon for a twin rapid fire cannon(don't know the caliber of the cannons) Balls are meant to be support units for the RGM-79 GM. Usually the formation would be 3 GM with 2 Balls, or 1 GM with 2 Balls. The Balls were considered flying coffins, but that came from the battle of A Bao Qu, the final fortress between the Earth Federation and the Zeon home space colonies. That battle had massive casualties inflicted on both the Balls and GM as they tried to land on and take over A Bao Qu. In terms of being a support unit it was okay, as long as it did not try to engage an enemy mobile suit on its own. You could think of the Ball as a fast moving gun platform that is very fragile.

To the enemy it looked like a massive Gundam was attacking them if they did not look closely enough at it. RGM-79ARA GM Juggler: This is my favorite unit that is based on or incorporates the Ball. It is the Earth Federation's attempt at creating the all range weapons that Zeon used during the last part of the one year war, as in all of the bits and funnels like weapons. Since the Earth Federation did not understand how Newtypes were controlling these weapons they had the GM Juggler have a cockpit for 2 people. One was for the pilot and the other was for the gunner. The gunner was to control the weapons that gave the unit its name Juggler, two modified RB-79 balls attached to its back, both replacing the cannon and arms for two beam cannons, one on the top and bottom. The balls would detach from the back and then be controlled by the gunner, flying them around using laser communication to control them. There were many flaws in terms of balance due to being top heavy and normal balancing issues. Though they tried to improve it, it was abandoned after the Federation got their hands on the psycommu system technology after the One Year War.
The Ball is kind of known as a coffin. Really during the end of the 1-year war you got either a GM or a Ball if you were a feddy and woe be the men that got Balls. Which honestly logistically it was way smarter than what Zeon was doing and making super weapons every week. Besides 1 Ball sucks but 1,000 of them is another matter.

It's why the federation held out over advanced weaponry Zeon had.
The Zaku used in this fight is a pretty unique prototype, since this thing has the upper body of a standard zaku but the lower half of a Dom the unit itself was specifically used to test the Rick Dom
The Ball is just an armored spacepod with guns strapped to it. Most of the time they're seen as cannon fodder, but they have surprisingly good acceleration (kakarot has a video or two about Balls)
