COBB Tuning 'Stage 3' Mustang Ecoboost - One Take

- After taking the Cobb 'Stage 3' Ecoboost Mustang on the track, we thought it would be a good idea to find an empty canyon road and see how it does in the real world. COBB's Ian Armstrong rides along to give some insight on how they tune the Ecoboost Mustang.

Considering the almost 20k price difference between the Ecoboost Mustang and the Mustang GT I would say the Ecoboost is a pretty decent choice.
For less than 20k you can have as much power as the GT but have less weight....not a bad end result in my opinion.
Great video again! You guys both hit on all the great points of the ecoboost mustang. Awesome low-end and mid-range power for fun daily driving, while still getting better fuel economy than the GT, paying less for insurance and saving ~6k on msrp. Like you said Matt, a great "starter" Mustang. The only drawback for me is the sound. The turbo sounds are cool but the V8 will always sound better in my opinion. Regardless, I still love mine.
hiiiiii!!!! love your videos as well!
+subaruwrxfan Maybe you can do another crowd funding and get a GT
+bobbyhill601 fukin lost my shit when i read that brah, lol.
+bobbyhill601 actually considering he got a premium (and I do not know if that is the navigation package he got or not) but he had enough for a PP GT non premium.
you've driven both be tuned EcoBoost and procharged v6. which would you prefer?
For anyone in the ATX area, this is Lime Creek Rd in Leander.
+pandaslayer Yup! have a friend that lives out there. Awesome road!
love this road! that was a great choice.
+pandaslayer saw this and was wondering what road they were on. Thanks for the info, not far from me at all
shhhh! cmon! :)
+pandaslayer Thought I recognized it, if you make a left at the stop sign it completes one big loop back at Anderson Mill Rd.
slob on my knob like corn on the cobb
Check in with me, then do you job.
I can't wait for someone to fully build a stage 5 ecoboost. Stage 5 internals, big turbo, bolt ons, ECU, suspension, full weight reduction, carbon fiber hood, ect.. I'd love to see the full potential of the turbo Four Mustang and the Camaro also.
I bought a 2016 one of these for a little under 25 grand with only 19 inch wheels options. it's a great value for money compared to my BMW F30. love how it drives and looks. just bought my cobb access port too over the Thanksgiving weekend and can't wait to run it. this video has me very excited.
I had a rental ecoboost mustang for a week in southern california. I took it on some canyon and mountain roads and I'm really impressed. It felt so much lighter and well made compared to the 09 GT I've driven before. I'm sure with these mods its a blast to drive.
I did same thing. Took Ecoboost to Ortega hwy. mulholland hwy and drive Piuma rd. suspension handled the bumpy mountain roads at 8/10 driving very well.
Cobb makes it too easy to turn a good car into a great car.
+MrSapper21 $2000 only...i'm sold too
+MrSapper21 No such thing as "too easy." I want it easy to turn a good car into a great car.
+Deejay Core Have that $2000? Then get a v8.
***** The price difference between the EcoBoost and GT is more than $2000.

Out the door at a dealership?
Lime Creek is a hell of a road. I'm glad you got to experience it. I live about 10 minutes from there, so I take my Focus ST on it several times a year. You should take the long drive out to the 3 sisters in the hill country. Those roads are as good as any. Out there you can drive on twisty canyon roads for 2-3 hours straight, with only minor breaks.
Really awesome video.
That Ecoboost w/ the Cobb updates gives me a bit of a 1/2 a GT350 motor vibe.
I will always be happy to see a Mustang video!
Great video! Is the Cobb stage 3 safe to run on the EcoBoost long term?
Glad to see you got to ride Lime Creek Road! It's tons of fun and the drivers out there are usually very courteous.
I'm glad this new motor is bringing in buyers that probably would have not considered it but I really don't get the appeal over the 3.7 v6. mine was making 290 + to the wheel with just basic bolt ons and tune and now is well over 400 with a ProCharger. That's all on 8 pounds of boost and there's still room to go. I don't think you'll be getting those kind of numbers out of bed four cylinder without a turbo upgrade so it would probably end up costing just as much. Also not to brag but I still get 32mpg at 80 miles per hour on the highway.
+Joshua C because the ecoboost is forged from factory, turbo will make more tq than your procharger, priced the same but money spent equally on both the ecoboost will be quicker and a more well balanced car... there are plenty of good reasons
There is a turbocharged 3.7 in Houston putting down 550whp. It's an s197 mustang and not the new s550 though. I didn't see why Ford cut the v6 mustang since they still make v6 trucks. It used the same motor as the basic v6 in the f150. Seems like a waste to not offer that in the more budget market.
next: ecoboost v8 and your mind=blown
coming gt500 is rumored to have a eco boost v8
+sasoun gaspar i doubt that they would do that. Fords best car is the GT and it has the 3.5 twin turbo. I think they will probably drop the same engine in the gt500.
Confirmed. 2018 GT500 is a 5.0 twin turbo Ecoboost
That's not been confirmed by any reputable sources.
hell the ecoboost v6 twin turbo would be fkn beast in these things
How much hp is the stage 3?
Nice didnt think I'd ever see ya come to Texas. I'm up in the Dallas area. Austin does have the better scenic roads than up here.
I was thinking a few weeks ago why the hell I have never seen a launch control system that's always active and you just need to floor it in 1st gear while standing. Why it needs to be so weirdly complicated? But these guys did it! The first logical way of integrating a launch control system. Thumbs up for Cobb!
For the record, the Corvette ZR1 launch control was active all the time
Sweet! Never knew that. Thanks for the reply!
Ian's a cool guy. Glad to see him make it onto a TST video. His Fiesta is rad.
I am seriously willing to donate money if it means you getting a proper microphone. Who's with me?
336 whp/ 378 wtq from cobbs website. They have dyno graphs of all 3 stages on there.
SVO version 2.0 30yrs later
Wish they actually named it that with slight different styling than a gt. Certainly better sounding then Ecoboost
It’s all about the marketing; Ford was pushing the ecoboost technology across its production line as a more fuel efficient way to get good power. I have to agree with you though; SVO II would have been a better name for I4 Mustang.
This video made me make the decision to buy the focus st. The only car where I can get an accessport to be able to pull tons of data and learn about the car (I.e. Spark timing correction). Thanks Matt and Cobb!!
George Jin wrong
This is so cool! I drive this road anytime I'm bored after school.
EcoBoost tech Is just astounding. Good job Ford!
I got to drive and almost own😢 for 2 weeks a 1986 mustang svo years ago...man what a car!! It could handle and had way more than stock power (boost peaked at 19-20psi) was a blast to drive and was able to beat a Fox v8 coupe with a cam and other stuff and at a roll from a light I hit full boost at 2000rpm and he got on it too and I pulled away hard and at the next light he was like “damn that’s a fast svo what did you do to it”😈👍
I can tell Ian is cool because he's wearing a JDM Legends t shirt! Nice car, btw.
+WikdSeafood Trey Cobb, founder of Cobb Tuning, also started JDM Legends!
TheSmokingTire Excellent!
Man, if your going to be in Texas. You also got to pay a visit to Hennessey.
Austin has some wonderful roads.
Not on I-35, 183, and MoPac. Traffic is always horrible between 3-7pm Monday thru Friday.
Really nice launch start system. That Mustang is a great deal.
Matt, be honest, you just want to get that ecoboost fix before you get your hands on that RS... I can relate, I'm the first order at my SoCal dealer as well, Stealth Gray RS2. And the excite is strong.
Keep up the great work with the videos!
gotta love lime creek road, right in my back yard.
Damn fun. Spot on review. Love my COBB Accessport.
Sure is nice! I still think I want to build an older car but this is great!
I'm loving my EB 2015 the premium interior is freakin great and the PP on CO looks and handles very nicely. I just need money for some mods lol
This looks like Lime Creek - Great road!
A turbo v6 would be engine that would get me to consider a mustang.lol Love what they have done with the 4 cylinder ecoboost though. seems like a god car and value
+chris pinks Why not just the GT? V6 turbo's don't usually sound all that great as the GTR, and ATS-V serve to prove. A TwinTurbo V6 would likely cost as much to produce as the V8 does, and not offer much if any benefit over the V8 (aside from gas mileage possibly), so I just don't see it happening on the Mustang.
GTR sounds great to me with aftermarket exhaust. Guess it's personal taste
+Adam S (Dolby109) who cares what it sounds like. Ford already produces a ttv6. a ttv6 would kill the v8 gt
Matt, I love the show! Does the 4 cylinder in your opinion offer any advantage in handling or cornering with a lighter 4 up front? Does it feel more nimble ?
Stage 3 ecoboost is fast AF. Might me getting one of these or a 370z for my daily. Already have a 330whp Supercharged RSX Type S as my race car. But if i had the money i would definitely get the GT350
Love this road! Enjoy those decreasing radius turns on my motorcycle.
Did you see that Motorcycle at 8:55 what was it?
Chase Pollard That was a Ducati Multistrada
Thank you
Soon there will be mods for the 2019 Ford Ranger.
Yes cant wait. They are coming out now! I just bought a '19 Ranger XLT FX4 crew cab. It's a blast. Awesome truck. Gonna work it!
"No other turbo 4 that's RWD that you can buy right now"
hmmmm, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, and Cadillac all currently make RWD turbo 4s haha
Great video though, cool seeing you on Texas roads Matt!
Lol right!
They cost ~10-20k more.
+Leonidae Than a Cobb tuned mustang? I doubt that much more
"for the price range"
Fiat 124
it is my understanding that direct injection engines in general are best at the mid-range of the rpm, and are not good at the top end due to the high pressure fuel pumps not being able to provide enough fuel at the top end. It is hard to make a direct injection engine perform well (with respect to the mid range) over 5500 rpm...
EcoBoost engines are amazing. This little 4 cyl is putting out more power than a HEMI V8. Wayyy more torque too.
hemi v8s make 425HP/420tq at the crank, with the hemi 392 making 525hp/510tq. with an ecu flash they'll both easily make more power than this 4 cylinder
hildenbrandt21 What HEMI is making 425? The old 6.1L would but the 5.7L without using longer runners like the RAM only makes like 380.
+Matthew Neuforth it's a chrysler engine, what are you expecting?
Questions for the poster.
Seems the lunch was done with the traction control on?
Was the suspension feeling bouncy at all on what looks to be a PP car with Cobb springs?
You said it felt floaty still in the track video. Would shocks make a difference as a need for a daily?
Love these videos. You have my dream job.
These two guys seem really cool. Subscribed :)
this is about where mine is, just different manufacturers for my bolt ons and slightly more aggressive tune. fun car! mine has a loud synapse dv venting to atmosphere so it's kind of obnoxious/F&F ha
Oh shit nice! Didn't think you'd be here in Austin man. Welcome!
Nice job Ian!
Man i wanna tune my shit by cobb but idk i dont want my shit to blow up.
this road is amazing
They're in the Cedar Park/Leander area.
My dilemma is that I don't know whether to get a Premium Ecoboost or a GT, First off Im 18 so the insurance will vary, as of now it is 250, which isn't a problem for me to pay now, but both cars are nearly the same amount for the options I want on both
Giovanni Alvarenga No way your paying 250 for full coverage. The ecoboost is your best bet
Some idiots said that Ford was "risking controversy" by ditching the V6 for the 2.3L Ecoboost 4 cylinder. The writers of this video are car gals and guys. Ditching the unloved and with no aftermarket support 300 HP/270 TQ V6 for the 310 HP/320 TQ turbo 4 cylinder Ecoboost . Wasn't controversial at all. It was a no brainer that both the bean counters and the car guys at Ford could agree on. Now ALL Mustangs are NOW in fact "performance cars" whatever the trim level or engine option. Being that the Ecoboot has an MSRP of $26,400 within the budget of young carbuyer/enthusiasts and can be easily tuned up to 500 HP with a change of the turbocharger.
I don't understand why ford put the factory redlines on the ecoboost engines so high. All the power falls off and if you let an automatic shift itself it just stays in that high rpm fall off power. They should have just tuned it to shift earlier in the torque range
Question: Is it worth investing in this car? What's the resale value in 6 years?
+xxFallenKnight Mods don't add value so no. No new car in this price range is an investment.
No new car less than $100k except maybe a Shelby 350 or Hellcat would make a good investment
+xxFallenKnight Get a GT....
+Mike Adkins agreed
+xxFallenKnight Unless it's a Ferrari, a Bugatti or a Manual Porsche, a car is not an investment..
I have an EBM and I only got it because I could not find a good rate on insurance for a GT.. The prices I was quoted was more than the car note so F that.. otherwise I would get a GT in a heart beat. I also thought the GT would swallow too much gas but with the way I drive this EB I'm getting about 13mpg in the city which is almost half of what I expected. On the highway tho it gets 36mpg easy all day cruising at 80mph.. unfortunately I barely drive on the highway as I live in a big city.
Not all EcoBoost Mustangs put sound into the speakers. You have to have a premium, the base does not do the imposed sound. Reason being is the difference in stereo.
My Ecoboost Mustang is not a premium, so no piped in sound.
come to Dallas next time you're in texas tons of cool and crazy cars
+Simon2x Or San Antonio just saw a white LaFerrari the other day.
+Scooby wrx that guy owns an all white collection, ive seen him in a veyron downtown too
For only $ 2,000 sounds pretty cheap, usually that's exhaust alone.
Nice video guys
Cobb indicted they no longer have a stage 3 tune. Just stage 2 for intercooler and exhaust :(
3 hours from Houston . Its worth the drive
Focus St or Ecoboost mustang?
Lets cuddle Babe mustang fs ive never liked a mustang til now
Good take!
the new Camaro offers a turbo 4CYL... cant wait to see what it can do!
+Aaron Hinkle I think its safe to say theres tons of people just as hyped as you and I for that haha. It might be the first new car I buy.
There are multiple turbo fours in RWD that you can buy right now so try again
I don't completely hear what Ian is saying at 15:54 but if he's saying "there is no other turbo 4 that's rearwheel drive" then I want to mention the BMW whith their strong 28i engine. If he's saying something else then please ignore my comment ;p
Damn those glasses look cool. . . Awesome video as always!! keep it up guys! :D
You car sounds great . Have you done any other upgrade apart from the COBB tunning?
Isn't the BMW 228i also a turbo four with RWD? And its not completely unaffordable
I would probably stick to the factory tire size. At this power level there is no reason to add rotational mass to make the car slower.
thank you matt
I heard the OTS tunes are bad and gives a much better chance for the engine to blow. Get a protune by PD and you'll be in such better shape
WAT?!? You were in Austin?!? When was this shot?!? Would be great to meet you in person Matt Farah. ;-)
Like a month ago
+TheSmokingTire Like, let some peeps know.
What do you predict long-term reliability with these upgrades will be like? If it's a daily driver and you're not good with a wrench (Matt you've said before that you can relate to that), will it be reliable enough to handle the extra power and boost to stay out of the shop and not empty your wallet?
Genesis Coupe 2.0t has been out for a few years, and is turbo and RWD :P
Allen Wood but it was discontinued
Allen Wood but yeah the genesis seems like a great car to go with aswell!
How much for this kit ? And what does it bring? I really would like to buy it for my 19 EcoBoost
Where is this road at around Austin? I'm originally from the area and would love to come drive this road when I visit in December.
I was curious to know what it sounded like from the outside.
Can this tuning be done to the Escape ecoboost? or any ecoboost for that matter? And I would love for ford to bring over a diesel powerplant for this car.
What about a turbo ats, that's RWD or the genesis though I believe the genesis might be going v6 only.
How much better is cobb tuning campared to Bama?
You forgot that the ats turbo, and most of BMWs lineup is rwd turbo 4s
Hey Matt, loved the video. But, I gotta say the audio could use some tweaking. Either the background noise was too loud or the voices were too low. The quality of the videos would be x10 better if the voices overpowered the background noise. None the less great video as always! :)
+Raxor not much I can do about that. Limited controls with a basic Lav-into-gopro.
Cool car, like a modern day turbo coupe thunderbird fox.
Lime creek! I live down the road :) wish i knew!
"Lighter nose" what kind of weight savings?
170lbs in factory form.
stage 3? Its got a reflash , exhust and intercooler... This should be called stage 2+ at most.. "stage 3" usually includes a turbo upgrade...I bet they charge an arm and leg for this kit... $2000!!
I've never seen a package from Cobb that included a larger turbo. It's usually just your basic flow mods + an accessport. $2,000 doesn't sound too bad for those high quality mods. I've never thought twice about spending my money with Cobb.
That’s not a lot of money dude 😂😂
$3,300
Matt/Ian, what road is this? I may be relocating to Austin next year and would love to hit up these roads in my NSX.
+Zygrene Nevermind, saw that it's Lime Creek Rd. :)
There's a restaurant right by that road called the oasis, it hosts the Cars and coffee every 2nd sunday of the month. in case you didn't know. great turnout of cars every time
justin beamon Excellent, thanks
No problem!
im about 90 minutes north of austin. seems to me all the really fun roads are south of Austin.
i think in a year i am going to move down there. somewhere between san marcos and austin. seems in that area you are right in the middle of all the fun.
fun backroads. nice road course. tons of off road places. circut of America. not to far from 6th street and of course alamo drafthouse.
not sure why but i didnt like Matt before... i have grown to like him... great vid guys
you should try to find a well built cobalt ss (lsj-t or lnf) and test drive it
those are awesome cars, really underrated
go to old spice wood springs in austin its insane!!!!
There is another rear wheel drive turbo you can buy...Genesis Coupe 2.0T, oh and Camaro 2.0T
and BMW 428i and BMW 228i and Audi A5 ....
pretty cool.
What size rim is fitted whit the 305 tire ??
Hey Matt, love the videos, ever thought of showing your watch collection? I have noticed a couple Rolex's so far, since you wear them in every video I am curious.
I have one Rolex and one Shinola. That's the extent of my watch collection. It would be a pretty short video
Long live the Lime Creek road
im in San antonio, anyone know of any good roads nearby? i only know of the roads to garner state, lost maples and now lime creek rd tbh
I don't c were all the hate coming from I had 93 gt Hooker Shorty Headers I loved the sounded great could drift on highway like playing on dirt road, but my mother had 1988 Ford turbo coupe with 2.3 turbo pushed almost same hp before e303 cam, port polished heads and stainless 3" h - pipe to my 5.0 best run street tires at track was 8.885 at 83 in 1/8 and 12.98 at 112 in1/4 it needed 150 shot when hit 3rd never did but that heavy ass thunderbird with 4 banger no match from dead stop but 50 to 140 my mostly stock gt only put 3 car lengths on and not sure but we never run got run beside on top end ik mine run 155 MPH np but that turbo coupe only had 85 mph speedometer but I run it for over 2 1/2 miles and it never quite climbing if run 90 in 2nd wonder what running at 5 grand in overdrive felt like better on top end but it was so slow as dirt to 30 until turbo got boosted would hang with my 5.0 couldn't walk off from it and my father taught me about diesels with turbos and half cubic inches 2.3 in line 4 both cars came stock 245 hp gained alot respect for turbo cars from a stop 5.0 put 10 or more car lengths on in 1/4 but from a 60mph role it impressed the shit out me barely pull couple lengths it weighed alot more than my gt turbos gained alot respect from me that point figured would b the future and it is what don't get they had that technology in mid-late 80's but I agree a mustang not a true stang without 8 cylinder hope find another 91 to 93 5.0 gt to restore and put twin turbos on it b a fun toy fs!
New Silvia. ? What are you talking about.
He's saying that it's like a new Silvia.
+Robert Linford oh ok, my bad, sorry :)
