I'm Samoan. I been around the world for quite a while now, I been living in New Zealand for 6 years, then I move to Hawaii for 1 years, and then UK I been in 4 months, then I move in to Japan, I even go to school there in Japan, and I end up KEIO University ECONOMICS, in Japan, so in my one and half years in Japan and studying at two different University, so after all that I never lost my Samoan language, and I am proud to say you guys did a pretty good job.

I love listening to the Samoans speak their language. Their language sounds so graceful. Wish there was teachers to teach my Rotuman language.

Yes we have become complacent. I’m half Hawaiian half Samoan an it’s like we become to comfortable with english language. We have to keep our culture an our language. It’s very important. Manu ia Le aso. Fa’afetai

The most profound statement for all Polynesian parents to hear in the States 3:34...... Too many parents from the islands come to the U.S. not allowing their kids to maintain or uphold their language, even while the parents speak heavy broken english. It makes me wonder if the 'parents of old' thought in order to obtain a higher life style they had to forsake their culture, this notion is extremely atrocious

Samoan literature is needed to help the progression of the language into the future by having Novels, text books, websites translated from English to Samoan. This where the government funding could help tremendously.

The deter of the Samoan language amongst many Australian or New Zealand born Samoan children are already on the verge of not knowing how to speak. And it will only get worse as many of the generations continue to be born outside of Samoa. As much as I love the efforts to try and preserve the language, it is no way near the level
Of which the English language is used and learnt. Which ever language is used at your country of residence is the language you will be fluent in. It's that simple. So if you live in sa for the next 2 or 5 years, you would come back fluent. Because you are exposed to that language all the time.

    • @jonlolesio3117

very true there's already 5 generations of nz born/samoan kids. I just think they need to maintain the culture ways in the islands because even they are losing their customs over there.

Samoans, Fijians, and Togans as well as Pasifika islanders are on the brink of losing their language. Might be a good time to start native talanoa programmes.

No way. If anyone has lost their native tongue it is Te Reo Maori. Other Pacific islanders are exceptionally well with their language.
