It doesn't 'just' affect Pacific Islander and Moari families... there are a lot of other people out there who are affected... They are 'all' of those who are working for and coping on the most basic of wages... Its not just homeless in Auckland... Its also here in Tauranga. Aucklander's are buying up houses here at an incredible rate... over the past 12 months, rents have risen to around and above $420 for the average 3 brm basic house, from $330... In just one week, one overseas buyer brought over 20 houses in just one week... Do you think that our country may be being used for tax dodges or something, cos I've heard it said that many of the houses brought by overseas buyers just sit there and lie totally vacant... Just a thought
maybe the homeless can make deals with some of those property investors then. They get a break on tax and the homeless get a home, win win situation for all.

That's the thing proportionally Maori or Pacific islanders are affected by high rents but Pakeha are a higher population overall, meaning in total numbers there are at least as many poor and struggling families and people
its going on everywhere , foreigners should not be allowed if they are not going to live in it and houses should be built to rent cheaper , who was this buyer ?,
This seems to be happening the world over. I suspect a small handful of wealthy investors are snapping up properties and pushing up prices. There should really be a limit to the number of residential properties one can purchase.
there are lots of people with umpteen houses they rent out , there should be a minimum but people cant get a mortgage because of the banks /building societies wanting a down payment , so people have to rent and some that buy these houses are getting the money from groups to help them buy ,
@@smallfeet4581 true, but that will change if there are limits in place. More properties will become available, and your down payment will become much smaller.
Why is it mostly affecting the indigenous people. While the British love well in their country. they are so good at creating environments that only work for them. Don't tell me this is not systemic.
Theres a reason why white people won't study history before the 12 century, because they will figure out who really was the dumb ones living in caves hahah .unless u white wash history it becames so obvious .but with each pressing year it becomes harder to lie about history. U realize that there is a lot of silence and gaps in the European narrative . Let me ask you can u name 3 strong European empires that don't exist anymore ? ....easy right .but can u name 2 Strong african empires and advanced empires that stood before Europe was even a thing ? No u can because whitw history doesn't teach about African development or civilization or conquest. Neither do they in asia or the new world yet the information is there .white people rather think that every one was dumb but them but fail to realize that the only thing Europe brought to the table as the last civilized people was guns and not even the good kind .the multiple round gun isent even a white mans invasion nor the gun powder .Europeans lack understanding in medican and sickness and plant harvesting with they got from America , even greek philosophers give credit to their arabian and African teachers .philosophy and religion was given to them literally. Math also was already knew by africa and arabia .they're architecture was given to them by western African before the renaissance period. Silk and gun power and other medicine was also given from the east .people like the ming dynasty and mail dynasty or Persian empire and the Aztec empire were most definitely not living in caves .infact i belive there is actually a account of European going to Africa and commenting on the big long roads that were light up and having large houses for the people .u have no idea what European were given by the morrs and rest of the world to even kick start them for modern civilization. So shut that ignorant racism up.ofcourse im not ignorant of modern day white advances. The individual revolution seems brought about by European mind
The main cause of this crisis are foreign speculators, especially from China. Since the prices are rising so quickly, for many foreign buyers it has made financial sense for them to leave properties untenanted, and just get a capital gain upon re-selling. Unless there is a ban on foreign buyers, and an incentive for foreign owners to sell (such as a progressive land tax), building more houses won't solve the problem because those new houses would be bought mostly by foreigners. The current government (right-wing of course) is doing nothing substantial about the problem because: 1. Many of its MPs own secondary properties, and a price fall would mean a significant drop in their net-worth. 2. Many of its wealthy supporters own secondary properties. 3. Their economically/politically clueless gullible middle class supporters believe the lies the government tells them (e.g. that only 3% of the sales are to foreigners); are ignorant, don't care, or think that every homeless person is 100% to blame for their current situation; and/or somehow think they are now millionaires for owning one property (despite having to pay around $1m for a new property if they were to sell their family home). 4. Poor people are more likely to vote for an opposition party, but poor homeless people are unlikely to vote at all (due to having no address for their vote cards to be mailed to).
No. Not all governments are the same. More foreign investment doesn't necessarily imply more tax revenue. This isn't proper investment, since it is mostly a matter of buying-up existing unproductive assets (rather than creating new productive assets). In this case, it would actually reduce tax revenue due to the economy being stifled (and more money flowing out of the country in the long run).
This is not tax revenue! it is personal gain. Also, estate agents are advertising overseas, " Imagine if you could get the average Aucklander to pay you 1/3 of their monthly salary?".
Eugene Johnson, You seem to have taken the red pill and see it as it is. There are so many self righteous types who spout the "I made good decisions in life, so the poor are just thickos who deserve to be trodden on by oh so clever predators like moi" in NZ. Too many people and sub industries feasting off the shonky property "investing" trough in NZ. Housing should be for roofs over heads. The giant property ponzi scheme just makes what is an essential item for stability in life a massive and distracting struggle for a huge number of people. It's madness.
This really disturbs me as the social issues particularly HOUSING has cost families their dignigty, mana and their ability to maintain and sustain a healthy and safe family and environment. My heart breaks for the most vulnerable, oppressed and deprived people of our nation as it is without a doubt social issues that are not taken seriously at a level where equality and quality of life is achieveable and sustainable. Kia Kaha NZ, our prayer is for our nation to get out of the struggle. A nation where we all deserve to be VALUED MEMBERS OF SOCIETY, EQUAL AND SOCIALLY INCLUDED. With respect to the father paying the majority share for support I call BS.......this statement assumes he even has a job for a start and even if he does there are still a number of financial support networks available that provide assistance depending on household income.....Working for Families being one. In closing take it from me, I have worked with a number of absent fathers over the years that would fit perfectly in this news story and I can tell you for a fact that my comments above were based on my experience of those characters. In order to get ahead in this world you need to make sensible decisions, in this instance this lady failed miserably and for that I have no sympathy.
Back in the day, a house would easily cost you between $15k to $40k, and the minimum wage was around $10, and this was probably 20 years back or so. Today, a crappy two bedroom house can cost $1 million. Its hard to think that this is possible but it really is just greed among a lot of house owners.
There is so much land in New Zealand. Create a Habitat for Humanity program, so that these houseless people can BUILD THEIR OWN HOMES with their own hands. They will appreciate it more than being given social housing, where they have invested nothing.
Australia, New Zealand and Canada. All relatively underpopulated countries that in the last 25 years have seen an explosion in foreign immigration. At the same time they've seen an explosion in housing costs since new construction never keeps up with the demand. Vulnerable citizens always get the shaft.
So true, we need more housing for locals and new immigrants. Quick population growth and we a so unprepared. So sad for these ladies, hope they found a home
This is the reality for many people in New Zealand. It is really unfortunate and so very upsetting. My heart goes out to the people that are rendered homeless due to the housing shortage.

I'm laughing so hard at a few homeless in NZ compared to the millions in the US get over it. If she doesn't have the money 1 don't live in auckland 2 don't have 6 kids.
30 seconds in and I already can relate, I know people who have had all their children taken away and others that were lucky enough to live in a shelter until they could save up enough for their family could move into a stable place. Tyler Perys movie "Good Deeds" has a emotional view of a homeless single mother and her struggles with child protective services and work trying to take the young daughter away. Natural disasters, mistakes, and other people have the power to make anyone homeless and It is so sad to see this and know I dont have the money or resources to help as most people watching think the same. I hope this family can get back together in the future.
Id do anything to help others on the streets I have been homeless many times growing up in my teens I'm 20 now and living with my mum and I truly see the pain and hardship that comes from being homeless and the fear of safety like how I felt when I was a young woman on the streets alone it's terrible and makes you realise how hard people have to live every day now that I've been on that side I pray and give money whenever I can Bec there's not much else I my young self can do I'd opan my house to people needing it but I have also seen my own people in Auckland pretending to be homeless to get extra money it makes me cry with rage that someone would do that you'd might as well take the money from the homeless that's how I see it I'm sincerely sorry to all homeless that have to deal with people like that I have and I truly have never been more disappointed in the community in Auckland for that sort of disgusting behaviour
I personally know a Chinese realtor who buys houses for Remote cash rich Chinese buyers who have no interest in even living in NZ. This is fact. The explosion of Auckland's population has placed greater stresses on the fierce competition of demand for houses.
You make it sound as though its the Chinese at fault-it's not your Government has caused this problem. National brought in thousands of foreign rich people to boost their vote and in doing that they made 40,000 Kiwis homeless. Well done Sir what's' is name..
As sad as it is! It feels good to know what really goes on! Its never mentioned that the foreigners mainly Chinese and Indians are buying the property, especially houses in new Zealand. It seems like there will come a time not distant that the kiwis will probably disappear or be second hand citizens in their own country.
Same thing is happening here in the US, and way worse. Rents and home prices are skyrocketing and wages remain almost the same. In some cities like NY and San Francisco rent has literally gone up 10-20 times what it was 30 years ago while the minimum wage is barely twice what it was 30 years ago.
IT'S REALLY SAD THAT THE WORLD CHARGES SO MUCH FOR RENT, KNOWING MOST PEOPLE ARE LOW INCOME , AND LANDLORDS WANT TO TAKE THERE WHOLE CHECK, THIS IS JUST WHY THE WORLD IS FALLING APART, BECAUSE OF GREED.
They have been running NZ as a corporation for years, most of this is by design and was well foreseen , but necessary (apparently). When the wicked rule the people suffer.
Average rent for 3bdrm in the working area is around $500 if your lucky. Average working wage is around $600. Cost of living going up but not the wages.
This is just awful in China they couldn't care less about the homeless they have no time for people that are not rich. I was asked once by a Chinese lady why we feed the homeless so there is the mentality
It's worse now. We live in small dairy town and large towns are around an hour drive away. Our House market value has gone up 35% in 18 months, feel embarrassed to charge that price knowing the jobs around here are mainly seasonal or long term factory workers who have a 50 year turn over. Feel so sorry for those renters, we've been there with 5 kids and just managed to buy on 1 income. Hope things are better for these families. All the best 💓
The Coalition could not possibly do anything like that. They won't even pay The Police a decent wage while standing by waving when our cops are off to Australia
The govt built moveable houses in Tokoroa for their Forest Products dept. Alot of those houses are now empty and being vandalised. Move those house to the newly freed up land in Auckland.
Cindy Rolle-Well in America we are going to stop a lot of that from happening. We are going to get behind our mayors and governors to set aside more areas for affordable housing.
The Trustees are a law unto themselves under the ML Law. The beneficiaries get "benefits" The Trustees get money to put here there and anywhere. Of course if the Trustees are NOT business savvy they will soon go down the gurgle. History shows that.
I'm so so sorry this is happening all over the world. This is inhumane and should be against the law. All humans deserve a roof over their head, food and clean water to shower and clean with.(Period) This is so awful.
if you think you cant provide the kind of lifestyle for your kids then you shouldn't reproduce... if you cant even take care of youself how are you meant to look after your own kids? flame me all you like but that's the fact! i'm still saving up money and waiting for the right moment to have my own kids.
Because they got used to a welfare system that was reasonably generous. And for some it became a lifestyle choice. While the taxpayer has to suffer by paying more tax.
the prices in NZ are through the roof. I lived there for a year and went broke a few times and had no money for food. The wages are low, food is 3 times more, power is huge $, we moved out of the country and that was the only way.
New Zealand people need to demand a pause in immigration up until no kiwi is homeless. Some other notable policies could be; 1) No foreign residential speculation 2) Residential rent controls 3) Squatters rights 4) Penalties for long term land banking 5) First home subsidies 6) Penalty interest rates for investors with multiple properties, and non citizen owners 7) Local government rates 8) A levey on the sale of a property to anyone who is not a citizen.
I like the squatters rights idea. A lot of time empty buildings-commercial- are vacated by Government departments moving into bigger more luxury premises-that is a blatant waste of the peoples money. Politicians should live in accommodation relative to their voting base...they are not royalty.
I don't get how people keep having kids if their so financially unstable. House and rental prices are ridiculous. But it's not the only reason people are in these situations unfortunately.
This is scary, cause I was thinking to come to New Zealand to study. Government needs to take care of it's people first. Now I have to change my Priority from U.S. to Australia to U.K. to Ireland to Canada to I DON'T KNOW. FML.
Yet some of the poorest people keep having kids. I’m tired of seeing stories like “single mother of 6 can’t afford rent”…….why do you have kids ?! Seriously, why ?!

Annie Bee ..not only your country alone the whole world are bought by riches ifyou poor after may be 5yrs you willbe kicked out of your country that called capitalist!
There should really be a limit to the number of residential properties one can purchase.
like Warren Buffet in the US...but he’s so funny playing the ukelele..
there are lots of people with umpteen houses they rent out , there should be a minimum but people cant get a mortgage because of the banks /building societies wanting a down payment , so people have to rent and some that buy these houses are getting the money from groups to help them buy ,
@@smallfeet4581 true, but that will change if there are limits in place. More properties will become available, and your down payment will become much smaller.
@@diongovender yes if they still have a job lol , a limit can help hopefully

This breaks my heart. I’m ok now but I’ve been homeless when my kids were young. I know what horrible things they’re goin thru...it hurts as a momma
The current government (right-wing of course) is doing nothing substantial about the problem because:
I think every government in every countries are the same. More investment coming in, the government get more money...
E.- jist put a match too the whole nation.- ''scortched earth policy is the way too cure the sickness.- out.
It's very expensive for housing and with a large influx of wealthy Chinese the prices are getting worse
House prices were starting to fall in Australia until wealthy Chinese started buying up property and increasing the house prices.
Same in HK as well
what is the current government - Bill English, is doing to solve the immigration of wealthy mainland Chinese?
maybe the solution is to limit numbers of people outside NZ buying a house. LIke a quota on chinese students they already have.
Hawaii also. The Chinese own it, literaly
Unbelievable..I never imagined this in NZ !
It’s in every country.
Even in Iceland they have this
Nz is a third world country posing as a first world country. Everything is super expensive.

6 kids? Where is the father?
Back in the day, a house would easily cost you between $15k to $40k, and the minimum wage was around $10, and this was probably 20 years back or so. Today, a crappy two bedroom house can cost $1 million. Its hard to think that this is possible but it really is just greed among a lot of house owners.
There is so much land in New Zealand. Create a Habitat for Humanity program, so that these houseless people can BUILD THEIR OWN HOMES with their own hands. They will appreciate it more than being given social housing, where they have invested nothing.
Your right there is a lot of land. But much of it is actually privately owned…
Australia, New Zealand and Canada. All relatively underpopulated countries that in the last 25 years have seen an explosion in foreign immigration. At the same time they've seen an explosion in housing costs since new construction never keeps up with the demand. Vulnerable citizens always get the shaft.
Jeff Morse but in Australia you make enough wages to live where as here we work 40+ hours and we can't even rent
So true, we need more housing for locals and new immigrants. Quick population growth and we a so unprepared. So sad for these ladies, hope they found a home
Anyway we are living in an over populeted World. That's the core of the problem.
This is so sad particularly for the poor children, and what's even worse this was 3 years ago and rents have gone up 25% more.
and now in 2021 rents are totally out of control...go jacinda go!!!

Some other notable policies could be;

2) Residential rent controls
3) Squatters rights
4) Penalties for long term land banking
5) First home subsidies
6) Penalty interest rates for investors with multiple properties, and non citizen owners
7) Local government rates
8) A levey on the sale of a property to anyone who is not a citizen.
what about making newly arrived migrants WAIT for social housing UNTIL kiwi-born people are allocated them first? sounds like a good idea to me.

I like the squatters rights idea. A lot of time empty buildings-commercial- are vacated by Government departments moving into bigger more luxury premises-that is a blatant waste of the peoples money. Politicians should live in accommodation relative to their voting base...they are not royalty.
