    Thanks, very helpful for this first time diy. I have a question though, if you thinset right up to the wall for the band, doesn't that remove any possibility for expansion? Shouldn't it have the silicone on the quarter inch gap at walls like around the tub edge?

      Hi! Good question. No need to address expansion in that area between the wall and the DITRA, as the thin-set won't be an issue there. However, movement should be addressed at the change of plane in the tile layer with a DILEX movement joint profile. Hope that helps!

    Can you have the kerdi distra extend under the bathtub and follow the rest of the install procedure? Or it’s not consider best practice?

      Hi there! If you plan to tile under the regular tub, you could use the DITRA under it. If you are doing a free standing tub and want to waterproof where the pipes penetrate the membrane, you should contact customer service to inquire about how to proceed. You can reach them at 888-472-4588 (US) or 800-667-8746 (CA). Hope that helps!

    I'm going to be tiling our bathroom, floors and wall. The floor tile will be set on Ditra XL (over OSB). I'm about to cut and install the drywall. Ideally, what size gap should there be between the Ditra and bottom of the drywall for applying the Kerdi band ? Also, there will be a glass walled shower stall in one corner with acrylic shower pan. The pan is already embedded level on a plinth of self-leveling compound 3/8" thick and extending 1/4" beyond the margins of the pan - so the base of the pan should come flush with the Ditra XL when installed. When I poured the SLC I stuck foam backer rod around the 'bottom' plate of the wood wall frame to serve as an expansion joint. There also needs to be a 1/4" expansion gap between the Ditra and SLC plinth. I was thinking to fill that with backer rod also, but since I'm going to be putting Kerdi band around the pan, do you think I would be just as well filling it with Kerdi Fix ? Cheers.

    This little ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxVoi3B4CB6Oygq1-vo4OTL1M_M5JkrXif tub works perfect in our 6 x 6 shower and is easy to get in and out. Also easy to drain.

    How do you waterproof around toilet flanges that penetrate Ditra? Also, have water and drain pipes that penetrate vertically through the Ditra to facilitate a clawfoot tub. I can waterproof the 3/4 inch water supply with Kerdi Seal, but how do I create a waterproof barrier around the 2 inch drain pipe?

      @@schlutersystems1 Thanks. I called and they suggested I caulk around the pipes and toilet flange with Kerdi Fix.

    Ive always wondered but how is the system waterproof if mortar is the adhesive? Wont water just soak through the tiles and permeate through the mortar adhering the membrane materials?

    • @schlutersystems1
      @schlutersystems1  2 роки тому +2

      Good question! What happens when the thin-set is sandwiched in between two layers of KERDI (or KERDI-BAND) is that the capillary action in the mortar does not allow water to migrate past an inch or so, even in situations with water pressure. This is why we require a 2" overlap and why the system is waterproof along with the membrane. Hope this helps!

    Why wouldn’t you apply the Kerdi fix along the tub before you trowel on the thinset? Also, I don’t see where there is a joint along the front of the tub that needed the Kerdi band. Can you please elaborate?

    • @schlutersystems1

      Hi there! The thin-set is applied first so the trowel does not disturb the bead of KERDI-FIX. The 1/4" gap left between the DITRA and the tub needs to be filled with KERDI-FIX to waterproof the joint with KERDI-BAND because thin-set will not bond to the tub.

    Do people bother sealing walls in a kitchen/laundry? It seems like overkill but if it waterproofs the area from potential accidents it might be worth it if it's not too expensive.

      It’s right next to a shower, which typically tends to spill out a little water. God forbid you are going to be giving kids a bath in there, or have someone who doesn’t realize the shower curtain is outside instead of inside. Very realistic scenario to have water in that area. Sure there won’t be 3 inches of standing water but it takes a lot less than that to get a wet subfloor.
