357magdad Great informative video; I enjoyed seeing the results. Which version of HOPPES NO.9 were you using in this video? Reference - HOPPES NO.9 SOLVENT, HOPPES GUN BORE CLEANER...
Solid work. This is why I love UA-cam
Hickok45 says Ballistol. Thats all I needed to hear. After a few times cleaning with it, my weapons seems to just wipe clean after use. Mostly shoot dirty steel because of price and have had no issues getting things nice and shiny 😎
Thanks for watching! I became interested in Ballistol because of Hickok45!
I agree Ballistol is good and so are other cleaners, but please realize Mr. Hickok is getting paid to pitch the Ballistol product. Federal does the same thing. I don't care one whit for Federal ammo. They would have to pay me to use their ammunition, just like they do Hickok.45.
Ballistol is simply the best. 💪🏼
I have used both for years, but always come back to Ballistol. This test was done in just 5 min. However Ballistol will do great when set for longer time. Ballistol will also be a better lubricant, more of a all in one. Plus the fact that it is NON toxic. I use Ballistol mixture with water in my Ultrasonci cleaners with great results. Plus it will give a light coating of oil to the parts I cannot reach. I have Firearms I have had for years, some stored for decades with nothing but Ballistol and they look like new. A big Bonus is that Ballistol is fantastic for Wood Stocks. Thanks for the review. I knew when you only went 5 min. the results would not be as good for the Ballistol as would have a longer time. Love Ballistol for just about every thing.
I keep a small rags treated with ballistol so I can wipe down the weapon (lock. stock and barrel) after inspection.
A lot of retailers are finding out about the ballistol where I live because of the non toxic factors it's hard to find here, that would be my deal breaker for ballistol because of the non toxic thing!! That's the more reason I would support this product!!
Hoppes is a better cleaner than ballistol. I think using lubricants like CLP , hoppes black, Pro shot zero frictionor Wilson combat. Are all better lubricants than ballistol.
Ive used both for many years but use Hoppes 9 for cleaning borers ballistol for my PCP air guns. Nothing beats that Hoppes smell either vs old socks smell of balistol. For an all in one you can do worse balistol is decent but not as good a cleaner than hoppes.
I guess I’ll go with Hoppe’s for cleaning and Ballistol for final touches and oiling!
That is exactly my thought. I shoot lots of Lead 22lr in my Revolver. Leading builds up.
Hoppes cleans it.
Ballistol treats it..
I do think its getting easier to clean. Maybe its a mental trick...but I will keep doing it. I would never give up HOPES
Obviously a potent solvent will work better then a non toxic oil
Ballistol also works better the more you use it. It kind of seasons the metal like a cast iron skillet after being well seasoned, and everything is much easier to clean and just wipe away.
@Blueskies They're just repeating something that hickock45 often says, almost verbatim. Not that it's wrong, necessarily.
Considering Ballistol is non toxic, it needs time to soak and penetrate as you saw by the second application of Ballistol; which gave the same results
"It was so much fun, I needed to do a second line of that powder..."
Only on a guns channel this will mean something else :)
It was so much fun, I needed to do a second line of that powder
Plus Ballistol is mineral based, so it is almost like an "all natural alternative" as far as gun cleaners go. That's the real win for me
I like to hear dolphins and baby whales screaming in the night.
I gotta have something with more of a nice chemical smell and feel. No, I don't drive no 'lectric car either.
The key to Ballistol is to continually use of this product... cleanings become much easier over time. If your bore has heavy copper/lead fouling... wet it down with Ballistol and brush/patch out the fouling. Plus, Ballistol has hundreds of uses such as fogging an outboard motor or cleaning battery terminals.

One of those good little productions that all add to my knowledge base. Thanks.
German army wanted an all-round type product that could clean and lubricate to save soldiers having to use multiple liquids. In the late 1800's, the Klever company based in Cologne Germany patented Ballistol, literally meaning 'Ballistic Oil'. German army said, "This is the shit we need" and from 1905 - 1945 it was found in every German soldiers cleaning kit.
Rumpole Del Bailey Do you know what they (German military) used after 1945? I’m curious.
@@MrTangent No idea mate. Probably in the short term they used a US or Soviet equivalent. I would not be surprised if the German army of today uses Ballistol though. I was in the Australian army for 10 years and I'm almost certain thats what we used. Same smell and texture.
That’s enough for me.
For the US Army was Gunex from Ballistol created
Yet they lost the war.
Thank you for showing this comparison. Although it might not be as professional as some mentioned, it's still the best this guy can show to people who has used neither one like me. Thank you again.
Thanks for watching!
Googled and, found this gem! Explained very nicely. Well done 👍🏽
Thanks!
That was a good and fair test.
Ballistol is a jack of all trades and a master of none. When I want to do a really, really good job of cleaning, lubricating and rust proofing my guns, I use 3 separate liquids that are good at each specific task. But when I go to my hunting camp or just want to quickly clean or lube a gun, I use the Ballistol because it's the most expedient means of getting things done.
pagamenews Well put. Now I can acquire a new product (Ballistol) and not feel guilty for having so much Hoppes, REM Oil etc.
pagamenews i
Can you pls provide the names of those 3 liquids
The nice thing about ballistol is that it doesn't hurt other things. One time I tried using "break free breach cleaner, no need to disassemble your gun" and the first spray into the breech got it all over the stock and melted the lacquer off. Now I use Hoppes for cleaning the bore and ballistol for everything else.
@@mikebernard9840 Hoppes for bores followed by mineral oil for lube or hopes oil which is the same thing. One shot for semi autos shotgun.
This is a well done experiment, Thanks for posting, and thanks for the people who commented here. All good stuff!!!!
Thanks for watching!
If I could I’d wear Hoppes #9 as my cologne. The smell of 45 years of gun memories.
You can still buy Hoppes #9 air fresheners on e-bay!
I’ve always used one part Hoppe’s and one part Kroil, one of the best smells in the world. I also use Ballistol for wiping down and protecting, it smells pretty gross but the Hoppe’s/Kroil smell luckily overpowers it, haha!
yep... Balistol (while doing a good job) doesn't smell "right"
usually when u do one line, u will normally want to do another one.....
lol
Lmao, that is cor-rect
lmao
Love me some bougar sugar
When you do two, you have to do three. When you do three, then you gotta smoke some on some foil!
Thanks! Very informative.
Hoppes # 9 is a true solvent where as Ballestol is more of a lubercant with some cleaning properties which treats the metal and soaks into the metal pores. Over repeated Ballestol applications it builds up and reduces friction and makes your gun much easier to clean because it puts a wall between the gun metal and contamination.
Thanks for watching. I have had several viewers comment that CLP will "season" the metal making it easier to clean (like a cast iron pan). I plan on testing this - stay tuned!
Check out my video where I test several CLPs' ability to "season" the steel plate.
ua-cam.com/video/kRnEmq-I6pc/v-deo.html
Steel does not have "pores".
It absolutely does. More like grains it's there
@@smiller9980 You maybe interested in this peer reviewed paper in the Journal of Materials Science (February 1992, Volume 27, Issue 4, pp 853-862) on pore formation in cast metals and alloys. Strangely, pore formation can prevent corrosion in some cases (see Corrosion Science Volume 40, Issues 4-5, April-May 1998, Pages 547-556).
I always have both of those products. I mostly use Hoppe's 9 on cleaning my guns, but on a lazy day I use Ballistol. Ballistol has many home uses and cleaning uses as well.
Nice comparison Magdad. I know I'm late on this one , just checking out more of your vids.👍🏻😎
Thanks Chopper Mike! I think this is my most viewed video!
Great video, job well done!
Great video. Down to business an to the point just the video I was looking for 💯
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you like the video!
Great review. Ballistol can clean like Hoppes, but takes more time to do so. But since Ballistol is also a lubricant, it can be considered an acceptable compromise. My only surprise is that lead is supposed to be more difficult to remove than copper.
Ballistol doesn't do nearly as good as hoppes I let my 50 rounds shot through guns it in ballistol for a hour and it took off maybe 20% aka the loose stuff... So after scrubbing for another hour I used hoppes and in 10 mins the other 80% was white qtip clean...
snappingturtle40
Hi, I ran about 150 rounds through my Henry 357 and like never before I've had a terrible problem getting the copper out.
I don't want to just keep scrubbing with more Hoppi's.
I'm using Ballistol and on day 4 still getting green Patches....
Any suggestions??
@@tjmooremusic Hoppes copper solvent
@@AverageReviewsYT If you only shot 50 rounds your gun is still clean lmao. No reason it should have taken more than 5 minutes to just wipe down real quick unless you're special 😂
@@tjmooremusic I suggest watching iv8888 he has some helpful tips on cleaning fouling, black powder etc.
Good stuff. I've always used Hoppes, followed by gun oil and gun grease (on the rails). Just picked up some Ballistol and will give that a try. Seems like Hoppes is a more aggressive cleaner, but I clean my guns every couple of trips to the range, or every time, so probably don't need it - and maybe the lubrication part of the Ballistol will be a plus in areas I don't specifically oil.
It seems like Ballistol has a love it or hate it odor. If you end up hating it, check out my reviews of Clenzoil and MIL-SPEC Break Free.
Great video! Thanks.
the nice thing about ballistic is you can leave it to soak without having to worry too much.
I liked this very much. Just watched a video review of balistol where it was said that it is a mild product. This is a clear distinction between the two products. Except for testing the other qualities of the balistol such as lubrication and protectant, which wouldn't be fair at all to compare in that manner though.
1:19 That moment when the pyro comes out in all of us. 😁
I'm also surprised the gunpowder burn so slow.
Thanks for the upload bro👍
Thanks for watching! Try searching for black powder vs smokeless powder - the difference in how they burn is amazing!
theres no compression thats why it burns slow
It's a much different animal when ignited in a sealed environment. Interestingly enough black powder Burns much quicker in the open atmosphere
Orscheln Farm stores sell hypodermic needles and syringes for vaccinating livestock. They’re what I use for handling all of my solvents except Ballistol. They don’t last forever but a three pack only costs a few dollars and I don’t feel like I’m getting cancer every time I clean my bores.
Very well done. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Interesting test, thank you for taking the time to make the video...

Thank you for doing this experiment. Looks like I'm buying both now? lol
Very interesting.....thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching! I have a playlist of all of my CLP tests!
I dont know about you folks but I use hoppes for cleaning the barrels , Ballastol for everything else except when I want a some what thicker lubricant and for that I use CLP Break free. This is all about Wisdom. The only way you can get that is to gather knowledge combined with the experience that comes to you as you walk the path. Would also recommend TW25B grease BY Mil-comm for battle rifle bolt carrier groups.
It all depends on the job.
spray contact cleaner is great for a pre-cleaning of ones battle rifles to get all the major grime off before you go into the detailing. It all depends on where you are at and where you want to end up.
"it was so much fun I had to do a second line of that powder"
What are we talking about here? haha
Nice review
I liked this as soon as you did a second line of powder.
Thanks for watching!
I agree with pagamenews. I tend to use Ballistol as a general CLP on my centre fire weapons and Hoppe's for more detailed cleaning. That said, Ballistol is very good for cleaning Black powder weapons. I enjoyed the video and like your scientific approach to this topic
More like "Hillbilly Scientific" approach LOL.

@@357magdad I just watched…. Very clever and a good clinical approach to testing. Costs aside, hoppes9 is the better solvent.. you did raise some good questions regarding the preservation products. Mark novak uses some interesting but simple approaches in his preservation and conservation videos.. even non detergent motor oil as a lube. He uses wax ring wax as a preservative on some old military style gun wood finishes. I do know that some of the oils are so light that they either evaporate or just dry away. Thanks!
I used that same quote In high school. ( it was so fun I needed to do another line. )
Great comparison on apples to apples thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the demo as I have drawn into the cleaner debate and although don't fear the copper. Looking for the best cleaner and with the Ballistol making me stoner than a sailor on shore leave, I may use it outside and the Hoppes like i have for decades...

Hoppe's No. 9 Gun Bore Cleaner, - is this the one you used. It says to use on bore? What do i then use on slides and inside of the pistol?
Thanks for watching! Original Hoppes #9 is a powder solvent. It will dissolve burnt powder in the barrel and inside the slide. For the rest of the firearm, I would recommend a CLP like WD-40, Breakfree, Lucas, etc. There are some good semi-auto handgun cleaning videos on UA-cam you can watch.
It's hard to imagine that 3-in-1 will do a great job in all 3 areas. I use solvent to clean, NOT to lubricate. I use oil to lubricate, NOT to break down residue. Each person has their own way of cleaning a weapon. As for me, I will stick with Hoppes and a lubricant such as LSA.
You can't go wrong with Hoppes #9!
Good job!!
I don't get what is so hard to understand. Hoppe's is an excellent solvent /cleaner! Ballistol (which I have never used) sounds like a mix of cleaner/lube like a shampoo/conditioner yes it does 2 things but isn't as good of a cleaner nor is Hoppe's a good lubricant! I have used Hoppe's for decades followed by my favorite lube. So Simple. I believe they make a special copper remover now if that is a concern. Most of us never shoot enough for any of this to be a really giant thing to keep our guns from working but I like to know what is the best like most people. I love the lube tests but most lubes will probably work as long as we put the lube on ! Ha. I use the heaviest of my favorite synthetic motor oil that I have used for decades in my cars and engines and have seen the "protection" or lack of wear it provides. A gun has many times less RPM's and therefore less wear than steel and aluminum car engine internals. Schaeffer's Synthetic Motor Oils for me. Its pretty green too in my Amazon Needle type squeeze bottle.
You can't go wrong with Hoppes #9!
My grandfather was a well known gun smith for years in the state of Connecticut working with all the top three gun manufacturers in the state he only used hoppes no 9 products above all the rest He said it's the only tried and aprovid by gun smiths and gun manufacturers I my self been using hoppes for over 60 years tried the rest But didn't find one that even came close in cleaning and lubercaion only Hoppes proved its worth enough said
Difference between an actual solvent(Hoppe's #9) and a CLP(Ballistol). Hoppe's is going to do a better job as a solvent, but poor job as a lubricant.
stchman exactly and the ballistol with a little more time and elbow grease was just as good... swear by the stuff
Nah, I have them both and Ballistol doesn't clean worth a shit compared to Hoppe's #9. Ballitsol is a good quickie CLP, but that's about it.
Agreed, hoppes works better faster. But with Ballistol, it seems you get the same results with just a little bit of soak time, and you eliminated exposing yourself to all the toxins in the Hoppes.
Don't drink Hoppe's. Not to mention Ballistol stinks horribly.
You don't have to drink Hoppe's for it to cause damage to your body. Don't like the smell of Ballistol? Breathe through your mouth when you use it. Any other questions?
Modern smokeless powder burns slow compared to black powder, so when a cartridge is fired the smokeless will continue to burn accelerating the bullet as long as it's in the barrel while black powder can be compared to how a breake barrel pellet gun fires, it burns much faster and little is left for futher acceleration of the bullet.
Otis used to make a bore cleaner that worked better than either Ballistol or Hoppe's on copper fouling. For some reason it has been discontinued from manufacture and cannot find out why. Anyone else know the story about Otis products?
Hoppes #9 for cleaning metal. Birchwood Casey gun oil for lubricating. Ballistol for wood and finish or an all-in-one if needed.
Great share, thanks.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
When you did the trail of power twice xD
Hoppes and 3 in 1. all you need
Both great products, but the Hoppe's is just better for bore cleaning because it is specifically made for that. Ballistol and other quality CLP's for everything else. I just happen to use G96 instead of Ballistol.

Is the Hoppes the gun bore solvent, or their oil?
Thanks for watching! Hoppes #9 is a solvent.

Ballistol all around works great
Ballistol is really nice because it may not work immediately, but if you put enough, it can just flush a lot of that gunk out.

Ballistol is great. Didn’t like the smell at first but you get used to it after a while. Lol
"in fact it was so much fun i decided to do a second line of that powder"
Is it safe to handle non jacketed lead bullets? Or reloading at home?
Thanks for watching! I would suggest that you do your own research and make your own decisions about what is safe for you.
I know this is old, but I’m wondering how similar the brass case used in the test to replicate removing copper.
Thanks for watching Jim! I used a copper jacketed bullet, not a brass case. I did a review of Hoppes Bench Rest Copper Remover:
ua-cam.com/video/Bc46EYQT6t8/v-deo.html
Hoppes clean your gun once. Ballistol clean your gun twice.
Hoppes oh shit I have cancer. Ballistol look at my beautifully lubed gun, wood stock, leather sheath AND hands.
Could wd40 be used as a solvent?
I figured that wd40 will penetrate the powder residue because it's a penetrating oil and that might make powder residue easier to remove.
Thanks for watching! WD-40 works about as good as the other CLP's I've tested.
Ahhh, but the aroma of Hoppes!
You can actually but Hoppes air fresheners!
I use Hoppes 9 to clean & Ballistol to protect. For lubricating moving parts, nothing beats LSA
That would work.
You need to let the ballistol soak over night. Want a super clean gun. Use Ballistol Milk in a Sonic cleaner. 10% Ballistol and 90% water mixture in a sonic cleaner. Cleans and shines all parts. And Ballistol will not gunk up. Leaver a very fine and very slick film on all parts. Great for cleaning firing pin and striker pin channels. After cleaning blow out with a can of Compressed air from Walmart.
Love my ballistol,Smells terrible but cleans and lube good enough for me. But that’s all I use so I think for best results it has to be used repeatedly and no other cleaner.
Thanks for watching! People really have a love / hate reaction to the smell of Ballistol! I have to admit I'm on the hate side! Did you know they actually make Hoppes scented air fresheners? LOL
Interesting test, and I think you tried to be fair, but,,,, It was not an "Apples to Apples" test. Hoppes #9 is a solvent. I bought my first bottle when I was eighteen years of age to clean my shotgun. After using the Hoppes solvent and running dry patches on all metal parts you need to put on some gun oil.
Ballistol is made from vegetables, so it is not toxic as Hoppe's and other solvents are. It is a C.L.P. (Cleaner, Lubricant, Protector) not just a solvent. I'm sure it would need extra time (than the Hoppes) and some more brushing, but the user gets a lubricant and protector also in one can. Sadly, the two hardware stores in my town do not carry Ballistol only Hoppes or "Outer's" brand. I will have to mail order or buy online.
{I asked both of the owners, but their distributor does not stock Ballistol.}
Thanks for watching! Many folks use CLP's like Ballistol as a do-it-all cleaner + lubricant. The purpose of my tests are to see if Ballistol and other CLP's can clean as well as a powder solvent like Hoppe's #9. So far only Ballistol, Clenzoil and mil-spec Break Free have been able to dissolve burnt powder on par with Hoppes #9.
I mean… I use hoppes in the areas that get covered in powder like the bore and the front of the frame. Ballistol everywhere else and in the bore after cleaning for rust protection.
I also use Hoppes #9 along with a quality CLP.
You might also add the fast burning stuff to the test, that is black powder.
I use hoppes #9 for solvent and ballistol for the rest.
Not a bad way to go!
This vid would have been great in HD.
Well done.
Thanks Allen!
Hoppes 9 solvent does what its designed to do. The best bore cleaner on the market.
You can't go wrong with Hoppes!
I will follow hopes 9 thank you good video
I don't think either of these products are engineered to remove copper.
Thanks for watching!
The Ballistol label reads "dissolves traces of copper"
The Hoppes 9 label reads "removes leading and metal fouling"
I have tried the same test with Hoppe's Bench Rest Copper remover and it also would not remove the copped I put on the plate with the bullet.
@@carolinausedmachinery I just use Windex. But you have to be careful with it too and not leave it in bore too long.
@@357magdad Yea, just because the label says something doesn't mean the product was "engineered" for that purpose. But, I hear ya.

Good test...
aerosol concentration vs oil concentration?
Ballistol is jack of all trades but does only an acceptable job at each. Hoppe does outstanding job in the task each liquid is designed for. And keep one thing in mind that Ballistol is non poisonous non harmful, yet Hoppe is poisonous to human body
Thanks for watching! It may not be poisonous, but the smell of Ballistol make me gag! Hoppes No. 9 smells so good they sell air fresheners with the scent!
Buying gun solvents is a racket ! A mixture of 50% low odor kerosene(also known as lamp oil),and 50% automatic transmission fluid works as good as anything I have ever used, and I have been a gun guy ,champion revolver shooter ,and heavy target shooter for 51 years . ! Just be sure to wipe down everything ,and then blast it dry with an air hose (safety glasses please) Then follow up by lubricating all parts with Mobil one full synthetic motor oil (0w40w) It works MINT ,and a quart of low odor kerosene ,a quart of mobile one,and a quart of ATF will cost about $12,and will last for hundreds of cleanings . !
