  • Erik, the Asian Movie Enthusiast presents:
A review of “Oasis”, a South Korean romance from 2002.
The film's plot tells about the difficult romance between a mildly mentally disabled man (who has just been released from jail after a two-and-a-half year sentence) and a woman with severe cerebral palsy. Yes, you heard that correctly. This is not your typical romance film.
If you really want a thorough understanding of the Korean cinema new wave of the early 2000s, “Oasis” is a must watch - even if you don’t think it’s up your alley. It’s highly acclaimed and revered by many fans of Korean film.

This is definitely one of the greatest films to come from Korea for sure, definitely has the greatest actress performance in Korean cinema from Moon So-Ri. She's spellbinding in this, the way she plays someone with Cerebral palsy and doesn't play it like she's a victim, but someone who's full of life. also the dream sequences when she goes from been struck with Cerebral palsy then normal bodied is fantastic. This De Niro and Day Lewis type acting, if this was done in American cinema So-Ri would have would an Oscar for best actress. She's that awesome in this.
Also Sol Kyung-gu is fantastic, equals his performance in Public Enemy (a must watch film). He's not always a likeable character but at the end you can see he cares for Moon So-Ri's character and is the only thing she's got, seen as her brother only uses her for the money. It isn't always a easy watch either, it's bleak in places. But anytime Moon So-Ri is on screen, the film shines. 10/10

This movie is amazing, the director is very talented. It was unconventional but the lead actress owns the role and sell it perfectly. This is a must watch.

The director Lee talked to students studying science at a university invitation lecture.
The film is an illusion, like Plato's conception 'Form'.
It is the opposite of the science dealing with truth.
But when it comes to the truth of life, there is an area that can not be reached by scientific truth.
And sometimes we can get closer to the truth of life through fictionality of movies.(he tries)

This is not your typical romance film but I must say it is one of the most romantic films I've seen and I'm not a huge romance movie fan. Thanks Erik for the recommendation. I hadn't heard of this movie before although I have watched another film that the lead actor was in --- Peppermint Candy (a long time ago). Anyway, marvelous performances by the two leads. I LOVED the imaginary scenes which weren't that over-the-top. And I totally agree with you that this story isn't a downer and the moments of joy are truly wonderful to watch.

After watching Secret Sunshine and Peppermint Candy lately , which are excellent by the way, I also had to watch Oasis from the director. And man, it exceeded my expectations and jumped right into my Top 20 Korean Films list. I really enjoyed your review today after watching it👍🏻

I am not a big fan of romantic movie although recently watched 'Castaway on the moon' and loved the movie. Now I am thinking I should give it a try as well.
    Thanks for the review :)

I thought this is one the strangest romance movies, that i watched so far from, south korean cinema.
The opening was really boring and it was a slow-paced in terms of getting to know the characters.
While the main character is a convicted criminal, overall he did one good thing in this movie.
He made the female character feel that life is worth living, no matter who you are, and by the end of the movie.
I kinda felt sorry for both the main leads.

His older brother hit and run and killed a person and he went in to jail for him. Now I don’t remember other things he did wrong but as far as I know he is not a real criminal.
